Rabbit, you weren't just kidding about the sound effects: that crab is annoying! I had this game before & just wanted to see if I liked it any better now. Probably not, but I can always uninstall it. (The first games I put back on my rejuvenated computer were 3 Gizmos picross ones from Toomky. I love picross games, especially Gizmos!)

I'm happy to see that you & Delenn & mikiem are still here. Thanks for all you do.

Delilah,

Hi Delilah, yes, and I'll probably still be here in another ten years from now (all being well) ;)

Stay Safe and Happy New Year.

Delilah,

I recall wishing I still had my crab pot when I first played this game years ago.

Yep still here among other forums. :) Plus on Steam.

Hope you had a nice Christmas and a better New Year than the last 2.

I was enjoying this game but when I got to level 2 and managed to get the crab to the treasure box I was not certain what to do after that. This game needs better instructions.

Brian,

Hi Brian, once you get the crab to the treasure box you have to clear all the tiles that are coloured light brown. I was initially stuck on this level as well, wondering why it wouldn't end once I got to the treasure box, but kept clearing tiles, then noticed the brown background tiles changed; so I cleared all of those and the level then ended.

Just tried the 1st level. It downloaded and installed on windows 11 and ran very well. It a match 3 but with a bit of variety. Defiantly going to keep the game.

fishboymn,

Hi,
There is no virus, you're getting a false positive. What your antimalware suite is picking up is likely the low level adware that all free games sites use. This earns them money, p0art of which is paid to the developers of the games they give away for free. No adware is installed into your system, it's contained within the game.

Th e giveaway versions have had virtually all of the aware removed that you usually get with TooMky and MyPlayCity games.

I've been installing games from the giveaway site since 2006 and have never had any issues with their games. Oddly, the other day I wasn't able to install one of falcoware's gamers as my security did block and then delete the exe file. I don't turn off that particular security so didn't bother with the game, First time ever.

This game is no longer available as far as I could see on MyPlayCity. I couldn't tell by the description if there is only the timed play or if there's one without the timer. Is there a way to play this without being timed?

Deborah1962,

Hi Deborah, I'll reply to this in the morning. I'm really late and need to go to bed. Can;t remeber whether there was an untimed mode?

Reply   |   Comment by Whiterabbit-uk  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

Whiterabbit-uk,

Hi again, no there is no untimed mode. However, I was completing levels with only a fraction of the timer gone (around a tenth). There's no real pressure to complete a level quickly. Levels are quite small grids and all you have to do is clear a path for the crab.

is it the developers idea to fill the screen with lots and lots of info so we can't find the end to leave comments?
It goes on for several pages.

Will not run on Win 10 or any compatibility options. Screen opens for a second, closes and then opens browser. Anyone get this game to run?

Reply   |   Comment by Chuck  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Chuck, I got this to run on both my XP desktop and Win10 x64 laptop with no problems at all. It defaulted to opening in windowed mode and I changed it to fullscreen with no issue. Using 1366x768 resolution. Have you checked your virus scanner and firewall to see if either or both blocked it?

Min, Yep did all the above. It's a mystery. Only difference using 1920 x 1080 resolution.

Hidden Wonders of the Depths
In Brief
Hidden Wonders of the Depths is an 13 year old casual arcade game with multiple game play styles (various match three styles, matching pairs, building and mahjong).

The game was originally given away February 9th 2019 and was given a positive thumbs up from 21 community members. with 9 comments, which you can see HERE

The Game:
There are casual games – instantly-comprehensible titles which appeal to a broad audience – and then there are casual games, the sort so leisurely and undemanding you could practically fall asleep playing. Falling firmly into the latter category despite offering a wealth of different game play styles and colourful undersea realm in which to play, Hidden Wonders of the Depths predictably manages to entertain, but, as you might imagine, won’t set the desktop world aflame.

Hidden-Wonders-004
What little detail there is story-wise revolves around your quest to reclaim fabulous treasures piece by piece for a desiring mermaid, who tasks you with journeying around a submarine world in the title’s single play mode. Never you mind, though, as it’s all simply an excuse to pair or group similar objects (such as starfish, sea anemones and pearls) in a variety of different challenges, including match-three diversions, mahjong-style amusements, memory-testing scenarios and even the odd hidden object sequence.

If it all seems to be a bit much to cram into one lone outing, rest assured instinct isn’t leading you astray. Quantity, not quality, is the watchword here, as although all of these segments actually perform capably and tie together reasonably well, none proves of outstanding or particularly memorable calibre.

The key problem: Core mechanics are universally borrowed from other, more involved titles. And while on a surface level everything proves perfectly functional, there’s no standout feature or singular aesthetic really helping the outing rise above the crowd.
Sometimes you’re clicking groups of three or more objects to remove them from the board… Others, lifting stones to see if they conceal like items, or swapping tiles to help a gibbering crab (which, sadly, sounds an awful lot like Crazy Frog) by clearing a path to gem-containing treasure chests. Heck, there’s even moments where you’re scouring the screen for turtles and vases (sans hint functions, with failure resulting in complete stage restarts) or solving tarot card-based puzzles (to gain bonuses, e.g. stone-smashing hammers, other games give for free), no less. But never does the total package feel especially compelling, or difficult, save in the latter case for those areas where the designers seem to have made the occasional creative oversight.

Visuals are catchy in a colourful way, with vibrantly-hued fish swimming in the background and boards full of objects that wiggle to provide the odd graphical cue when user prompting is needed. However, the musical score and library of sound effects are highly nondescript and repetitive, and are best turned off within the first five minutes. Still, it’s hard to see who’d really persevere and complete all 210 levels, when – instead of opting for a little something from every category – you could simply find single-genre titles that offer a much more compelling and focused experience.

Furthermore, although time is periodically an issue and you’re only afforded a limited number of lives, Hidden Wonders of the Depths never really pushes the limits of your ability as much as it does patience. As such, the game offers a nice way to wind down after a long day at work more than engaging proposition that’s bound to keep you glued to your monitor. Bearing this in mind, we strongly urge you to consider this before breaking down and coughing up the cash required to grab it.

Conclusion:
Although there were lots of different play styles, I much prefer a more focused and challenging casual game. I have much better versions of all the play styles presented in Hidden Wonders of the Depths and found no challenge whatsoever while playing the game. If you just want a quick 10 minute coffee break, with some variety, then this game will give you that, but for a more prolonged game play session I wouldn't bother. I found the game rapidly became rather boring despite its colorful and pleasant graphics.

The game is almost 14 years old, and may have issues on more modern systems, especially if you have hi resolution monitors. If you do have issues, try going into compatibility mode to adjust the graphic options. Also, the language option has been disabled; only English is available in the giveaway version.

If you miss today's game giveaway you can always get the game free via MyPlayCity 24/7 HERE; or If you prefer to purchase the game you can get it HERE via Big Fish Games. There are also two more Hidden Wonders of the Depths games available called Hidden Wonders of the Depth 2: Around the World and Hidden Wonders of the Depth 3: Atlantis Adventures, both of which are available via Big Fish games. I couldn't find a free and safe download site for either of these games, though you may find browser versions on Zylom.
Problems getting the game to work:
If you're having problems installing or activating or getting Hidden Wonders of the Depths to work please visit the FAQ's Thread HERE and read through the communities comments because sometimes fixes have already been posted, for example, a common issue seen since the Themida wrapper was introduced three years ago is that some community members installation of the game are blocked by their security because Themida code has been known to hide malware, (usually an error message is flagged for example 'The executable is corrupted' even though in reality it is not); so as a precaution some anti malware programs will block and even delete the suspect installation files even though the files (i.e. the setup, read me and setup.gcd files are actually totally free from malware. This issue can be solved either by rebooting your computer in safe mode with networking or a quicker method is to temporarily turn off your security software to allow the installation. You could also try white-listing the setup.gcd file. In the almost 12 years this game giveaway site has been operating there has 'never' been a game given away that was infected with malware.

If you experience graphical issues go into properties and select compatibility, then check the 'Disable full-screen optimizations' and 'run in 640x480 screen resolution'. Also check the 'Run this program in compatibility mode for' then select either the XP or Vista options and check the 'Run this program as an Administrator'.

If for any reason you want to contact the giveaway team, for example, you have a game to offer the community, or are unable to download the latest game or other issues that the FAQ's thread or these comments don't cover or solve you can do so HERE

Whiterabbit-uk,

Other Free Games:

For other free games please check Delenn's threads over in the giveaway forums HERE and HERE for the latest non Steam and Steam freebies; it's kept up to date frequently, whenever there's a free game becomes available (thanks for keeping this up to date Delenn, very much appreciated).

Also for the latest Steam sales check THIS Steam database site out. You can list the games in 'price' & 'percentage off' by clicking the headers. If you link SteamDB with your Steam account, all games that you already have will be highlighted in green and those in blue are on your wish list. When there are Steam games being given away, you'll see the percentage off as 100%. It's worth checking this regularly to make sure you don't miss those fantastic deals and freebies. Delenn usually posts links to all free games within several hours of them going live, so check her links at the top of this comment as well.

Don't forget to check Indie Gala's freebie section HERE, then click on the Showcase header, selecting freebies from the drop down menu; recent additions include Cov Shooter, Garfield Kart (a family oriented racing game with cartoon like graphics), Pixel Puzzles 2: Christmas ( a traditional style jigsaw puzzle game), North (asylum seeker game), Nostradamus the Last Prophecy, (a point and click mystery adventure), Snowball (A more "discovery-based" approach to pinball. Learn the secret rules of the board to access hard to reach places and rack up HUGE SCORE BONUSES, which are generally agreed to be more important than any other current event in the real world) and the full version of Die Young (you play as Nehir, a field agent of a well-known political party. The party's agenda is to deconstruct and eliminate Brother n.1, the leader of Island's community); we were previously given the prologue version, (which is still available free) Recent games such as Distortions, Dino Run DX, Cheap Golf, Kill Em All, Dead Hungry Diner and Contract with the Devil have now been removed. All remaining freebies can be found in the showcase section (around 100 are available). Not all games that go into the showcase remain free and are removed after a short period; so, you should grab them as soon as you can.

The latest free game from Epic is Gods Will Fall - Experience the trials of 8 warriors in their plight to sever the gods’ grip on humanity as you take on legions of beasts in each of the gods’ realms. Next Thursday the 13th January we will be getting Galactic Civilization III - Build a civilization that will stand the test of time! Choose from dozens of unique races and make a name for yourself across the galaxy through diplomacy, espionage, technological advances, and more.
The best Indie Bundles sites that have been operating from around 2011 are the Humble Bundle and Indie Gala sites (though the latter isn't as good as it used to be) where you'll sometimes find decent bundles with over 90% off the usual price of the games included in the bundles. The Humble site is in my opinion the best. A more recent addition that is worth checking out are the Fanatical bundles (that used to be called Bundle Stars) that you can find HERE.
