This game has a known bug in level 6/7. See BFG forums from years ago for confirmation. As a result, this level cannot be reliably completed without losing one or more lives. It would have been nice if they had fixed it years ago.
NB your captcha codes as impossible. Multiple attempts that were clearly corrects have failed to give access.

It installed On Windows XP Pro but it crashes on start up with a Error sound but nothing shows up in the event log to tell me why it is crashing I am running my pc on a Colour X32 a screen rate of 1024 X 768 X 75 MHZ I Wish I could play it but it just wont run.

I have all the newest graphic drivers from Nvidia

Most of the games work fine from here but for the odd one or two which require special permissions or adjusted screen settings. I have tried all the basic fixes I know and still can not get it to work.

This seems to be another one that just wont work on my PC. I guess I have to delete it now.

Unless some one here has a way to fix it so it plays..

I am open to Any Suggestions ? If you know of things I can do to try and get it to work please post a suggestion or If you are one of the GAOTD site mods please feel free to E-mail me any suggestions you have

I found it very enjoyable and played for way too many hours yesterday. I would like a way to turn off the Greek stuff and just play the game. I started to get annoyed at having to stop playing when all that other stuff comes up (like building a palace, Greek hero's, etc.). For me, the game is fine without all that other stuff.

Dear giveaway community, thank you for your excellent feedback this week. Its always appreciated. I'm sure this feedback helps towards getting more games.

Today's game gained a very good 81% positive thumbs up vote from the community. There were nearly 8000 downloads, which is quite good considering there wasn't a game on Saturday (usually if there's no game on Saturday, visits decline on the Sunday.

If you missed today's game you can get it via both MyPlayCity (MPC) and Jenkat games for free 24/7, but please remember to un-check the boxes otherwise your home page may be redirected to MPC, your browser to Ask Jeeves and a tool bar installed. These can be avoided by making sure you un-check the boxes. I think Jenkat is a better option, though MPC have a larger choice of games (well over 800 now).

I like Match 3 games, and this one has a nice twist. It kinda reminded me of the Elements series except one doesn't need to make a path for the water. All in all, a nice time killer that doesn't require me to think too much. :-)

I love Match 3 games, and this one did not disappoint me. It installed fine on my Windows 7 laptop, and gave me the option of playing at an easy, normal or hard level when first starting the game. I've played through a number of levels with no glitches at all, and it runs pretty quickly when going to each new level. Once you've gotten some heroes, you can use them to help you out, or you can try to finish the levels without using those heroes, which can make the game more challenging, and also helps you gain more trophies. When playing the mosaic games, you can swap tiles that are not right next to each other, which made it quite easy to complete those puzzles. The graphics are really nice, it's fun to build your castle, and I enjoyed reading about the mythology of the heroes. For me it's a keeper!

Thanks so much for this and all the other great games I've gotten from GGOTD!

Thank you for this game. I am not a lover of Match 3 games but this one is a little different. It is relaxing enough to just sit and play for a little bit before moving on to the next thing. The graphics are great and the music not bad. I had no problem installing on Window 7. Also had no problems with creating and receiving trophies. I have not played through the games but played far enough into to it that I think it all works fine for me.

Sorry. I'm too frustrated about those Alwar games which are in hard time mode by far too fast for a normal gifted PC user. Get stuck in the famous Enchanted Cavern I level 3-7 for months, Enchanted Cavern II same difficulties, Articv Game remained unresolved for a year now.

In addition, these games freezes on my Win7 64-bit, even when using a game booster. A normal PC user likes to enjoy a PC game, not getting exhausted and frustrated over the time.

If someone could help in Enchanted Cavern I level 3-7, I will try this new game. Otherwise, I will throw those games away. At least, those games were free giveways.

how much memory do you have? Heroes of Hellas is quite an old game and requires little RAM, so you shouldn't have much difficulty running it.

Typical match game that would probably be an acceptable time killer. Unfortunately, this is the first Alawar game that I've ever had issues with. First time playing, my first move, I was awarded a trophy. Trophy splash screen appeared but I was unable to close it, clicking did nothing, tried hitting various keys, no luck. Had to close the game by ending the task. Tossed it up to being a fluke and restarted the game. Made it through three rounds and it's stuck again on the level closed screen. It says click to continue but clicking does nothing. Had to end the task again. Seems to be a bug somewhere. Win 7 Home Premium SP 1 64 bit.

Strange. Try deleting the profile and starting again. i had no problems ;paying several levels. It is possible to get an award right at the beginning if you can create a string of 12 matches. I was able to create one with over 20 matches part way through the first level.

Installed without problem - works fine under my Win7 Ultimate - I too prefer relaxed game modes but I don't think the timed mode will be a problem later on - it's an easy game I can play to cool down after work (as I have a hard time with mediating and such I use those games for this - often in the middle of the night).

Thank you very much!

Don't think anyone has to worry about timing on this game. Just completed the 5 parts of the first level in about 7 minutes of game time. Running Win7Pro, 64 and had no problems with install. Love my "new" laptop! Hi there WhiteRabbit, hope you are feeling well and enjoying the new house! :D

I haven't decided yet whether I will download this game, but two aspects which I find particularly appealing are the myths -- I enjoy learning (or relearning) trivia -- and building the palace. Having read all the discussion, I'm not sure I see any real negative aspects of the game other than once played through, replaying would offer minimal challenge nor would it be as engaging. I have recently spent WAY too much time playing Fishdom2 (I'm at nine aquariums, and still have not bought all the trinkets). Before that, Cradle of Rome was my main distraction (the challenge of reaching Olympus was not always successful). I definitely give Alawar kudos for offering Heroes Of Hellas with so many fine details, and look forward to seeing the other games of the series on GGOTD some day. Thank you so much WR and GGOTD for all that you do to offer us these free games.

I love this series of Heroes of Hellas. This is the game that started it all and yes, it's a bit rough around the edges but so were we starting out until we became polished.

Heroes of Hellas 1, 2, and 3 are my favorites in the land of Match 3; you get music, action and a pretty cool story plot. I became addicted years back then lost my BigFish account forcing me to turn to MyPlayCity for a freebie copy. MyPlayCity refused my declines to have the trojan my homepage and search. I had to accept to download the game.

Well, I changed computers thus losing my copy and besides, I hated MyPlayCity's hijacking my homepage and it's nag screen if I dared to circumvent around their hijacking.

Imagine my joy when I saw it offered in GGOTD, I nearly did a backflip. I say nearly because I am sore from a major de-junking project for our yearly inspection and cannot manage to navigate my aging self to the kitchen without snap, cracking and popping bones and joints in the effort; oh and yes, it's accompanied with the groans, moans and "Oh my gawd!" LOL.

All this to say thanks GGOTD, you made an old lady very happy.

Heroes of Hellas is a lovely and charming game. It's rare to find a match-3 game that lifts the spirits, but this one does because it is beautifully crafted. Its simplicity is a plus. This game is pure relaxation. Thanks for the gift.

This game is also available from Jenkat Games and MyPlayCity.com. Jenkat has a strange dual-folder install into Program Files (no install options available) and a lot of "declines" needed before the actual install but no toolbars or hijacking done. MyPlayCty also installs to Program Files (with no options) but in it's own game-site area. MyPlayCity also tries hijacking search engines and home pages.

I got this game from Alawar itself a few years ago. As the game continues, those heroes are needed and in fact, to complete some levels, you are required to use the heroes a given number of times.

There are some logic errors in the counting of levels to get some trophies. It can be difficult to get all the trophies because of this.

At least one of the later games in the series has a non-timed mode but this one does not. It's a fairly simple game and is enjoyable just to relax. You don't always need intense play for enjoyment!

THE program can't start because hge.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling program to fix problem.
try this and uninstalled and reinstalled same thing

............................Moderator comment.............................

Hi Norm, I think hge.dll is something to do with the programming language C++. You can download it from the following link:

http://originaldll.com/file/hge.dll/39962.html

place it in the games directory. hopefully that will fix the problem

Have you checked out the FAQ section that i link to in my review. The problem is possibly associated with I.E. being set to offline. If you are using Firefox, this is a possibility. You need to open internet explorer click on 'File' and check the drop down menu. Near the bottom if the offline working is checked, uncheck it then try to install again. If it's not that, try clearing out your internet cache (you'll need to make hidden files seen to do this. Then go into 'AppData' folder, open up the 'Local' folder and delete all the contents of the 'Temp' folder. (Some may not be able to be deleted as they may still be in use). Also try rebooting your modem and/or router.

Why would Zeus the king of gods and all mortals need lil ol' me to find something for him? I mean he's a god so why doesn't he just ZAAPPP it back into his hands?

So, Zeus has scepter that control Heaven and Earth, and he just lays it around like a cell phone to be stolen? REALLY? He sure is one stupid god!

AND if it really does control Heaven and Earth, why in the world would I want to give it back to him after I found it. I'M KEEPING THAT THING, DUDE!

Zeus has boobs in that one picture! That's FUNNY! LOL!

NO relaxed mode? That's a bummer! Relaxed mode is like soooo AHHHHHH relaxing. I like to control-alt-tab to check email, Facebook, ETC while playing my games. (I've got IMPORTANT STUFF going on, you know.) So, even if it has a LLLOOONNNGGG timer, it's STILL bad (to the bone.) And INEVITABLY there is ALWAYS one board I cannot complete in the time limit. That happened to me in AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS. I tried to complete one board like a half dozen times and never did. EVENTUALLY I just gave up and DELETED the game.

So, I think I will PASS on this one.

It just ain't FISHDOM!

OH! I never found the link to yesterday's game! :(:(:( I hope I didn't miss a good one!

..........................Moderator comment..........................

There wasn't a game yesterday. As mentioned to Cas, this is an easy match three. Even though it's timed you get a generous amount of time to complete each level; especially if you play on easy. Despite it being easy, its still an enjoyable game, with plenty of awards, a building section and unlocking gods and powers.

Installed, then discovered: puzzling is timed.
Timer can not be disabled.
UNINSTALLED.

.................................Moderator Comment.........................

Hi Cas, I restarted the game with a new profile just to see how long it takes for a level to time out on easy. It took nine minutes, which for this easy game is ample time to complete a level. If you're feel you are stuck, you just have to leave the game dormant for 30 seconds or so and you'll then get an indicator showing you a match. there's also the shuffle button, which enables you to change the configuration of the tiles. As you progress through the levels, other bonuses are introduced as well.

This really is one of the easiest match threes I've ever played. Even though its a timed game, the simplicity of the game, as well as the six sided tiles, makes it much easier to create matches of three.

Addendum - This game is fun, and a keeper for those times you have a few minutes to "waste" (lol). But watch those mosaic games, once any tile is in its proper place it becomes locked and you cannot move it again, so it's easy to block a tile that you need to move.

Windows does not recognized the .gcd file. how can I install the game?

...........................Moderator comment...............................

Hi Joyce, click on the orange colored file with the key symbol. That is the set up file. I'm presuming you tried to install the game via the setup.gcd program? The gcd file is for security and is not the actual set up file. Another possibility could be that your security program (anti malware) is blocking the program. If it's the latter, turn off your security temporarily. Game giveaways are tested thoroughly for malware, so it's pretty safe.

It looks similar to "7 Gates - Path to Zamolxes" from a few weeks back, just different graphics and "plot", but is quite different. The main game is is too easy since you can select entire strings of tiles in zigzag lines. Never sure what the goal is for each level (time? points?, number of tiles removed?) but finished the first level in about ten minutes. Then got blocked in the first mosaic puzzle so selected "restart" ...this didn't restart that puzzle! it wiped out all progress and sent me back to the start of the game!

No problems installing, registering, or running in Vista 32 (you have to create your own shortcut, or run from the exe). But that restart caused an outburst of unacceptable language.

Heroes of Hellas in Brief:

A match three with six sided tiles, mini games, achievments and some myths

Capture

Heroes Of Hellas 1

========================================================

Heroes of Hellas:

Installation:

Heroes of Hellas downloads as a 27 MB zip file that unpacks to a read me and a wrapped setup file (the orange colored file with the key symbol), plus there's a setup file with security (setup.gcd) that's protected from being hacked (because the previous giveaway system was easily cracked). This file may case some security software to alert the user to a possible malware attack, but it will be a false positive.

The game giveaway team check all game giveaways for malware using several well known anti -malware suites. There has never been a game giveaway infected with malware since the project started back in Dec 2006. (The owners know that allowing such things would compromise their business, so they make sure all software given away via the giveaway and gamegiveaway sites are thoroughly checked for all types of malware before allowing community members to download any files.

Heroes Of Hellas 2

Heroes Of Hellas 3

Heroes Of Hellas 4

Some community members have been having problems installing games since the security software was added. It's been found that turning off your security temporarily or configuring it to accept the setup.cgd file usually sorts the problem out.

To register and install the game click on the orange colored icon. The installed game requires 43 MB of disk space and installs to the following path by default:

C:\Games\HeroesofHellas_game\ (If the install path shows the last game giveaway installed you need to clear your internet cache) you'll also find a shortcut in the Start Menu for an uninstaller.#

Heroes of Hellas works on my Win 7 (64 bit) & Win 8 (64 bit) computers. I've not reinstalled Vista or XP yet.

Introduction:

Heroes of Hellas challenges you to link identical objects to create chains of three or more items. Easy to learn and challenging to master, Heroes of Hellas offers an unforgettable adventure through a magical time.

In Heroes of Hellas, you'll travel through Ancient Greece to find the thief who stole the scepter of Zeus. This relaxing matching game challenges you to click and drag your mouse across objects on the game board to create chains of three or more identical items. When the going gets tough, you'll be able to draw from the powers of seven heroes and use special bonuses that can help you win, even as you explore the history behind nine classic mythologies. Visually stunning, easy to learn and challenging to master, Heroes of Hellas offers an unforgettable adventure through a magical time.

The Game:

Heroes of Hellas is proof you don't need to reinvent the wheel in order to create a highly polished and fun casual game. Sure, it's one of those 3-in-a-row gem-swapping games - a la Bejeweled - but it's played in a different way and weaves in an enjoyable Greek Mythology angle.

Here's the scoop: Someone has stolen the scepter Zeus holds to control Heaven and Earth, so you must travel through ancient Greece and into Hades, summon help from celebrated heroes - such as Hercules, Icarus and Perseus - find the thief and return the scepter to the almighty ruler of Mount Olympus. On your adventure you'll learn about Greek mythology, play mini-games and help build a beautiful place (with the help of Hephaestus, the god of the fire of blacksmiths).

Heroes Of Hellas 10

Heroes Of Hellas 12

The core game-play works as follows. Players are presented with a unique-shaped grid that resembles a 2-D beehive as it's made up of hexagons (six-sided objects). Insides each of these connected hexagons are colored items such as gems, coins and arrows. Your goal is to click and hold the mouse over a specific object - like a purple arrow or green coin -- and move the mouse so that it connects with at least three identical adjacent shapes. When you let go of the mouse, the connected items disappear, making room for new ones that cascade down the screen.

Behind some of these hexagons are gold plates, which are then removed once the object is removed on top of it. The player will finish the level when all gold plates are removed from the board. This must be completed within a predetermined time or else you must repeat the level.

Power-ups also appear on the board - such as a lightning bolt that removes nearby objects or a clock that adds some time to your game - so it's wise to take advantage of these by using them in your chain.

Heroes Of Hellas 20

Heroes Of Hellas 24

Just as there are power-ups there are obstacles, such as stones that cannot be moved, and locks and ropes that prevent a gem from being used until you make it part of your chain or remove the gems around it, respectively.

Also, red semiprecious stones will appear on the level. To collect these you must remove the items below it until the stone drops down to an open spot on the level (usually at the bottom) and then will be added to your collection.

Each main level helps you reveal the portrait of a different Greek hero, who can then help you finish the levels going forward. For example, you can unlock Odysseus, who will help you remove gold tiles or semiprecious stones if you collect enough red gems.

After a hero is unlocked you will also be able to play a fun sliding tile mini-game that has you compile a hand-drawn picture of them, which you can then use as Windows wallpaper if you like. This picture, and some info surrounding the hero, is a nice reward for progressing throughout the game.

Heroes Of Hellas 8

Heroes Of Hellas 9

Other rewards for playing include trophies you can win and view from the main menu (example: "completing seven levels in a row without the help of a hero") and the ability to slowly build a palace by choosing between two sections at a time, such as the kind of columns and pillars, or pathway that leads up to the palace. You can also view your palace in progress from the main menu.

The problem with Heroes of Hellas, though, is I never once needed a hero's help to remove colored objects, gold tiles or semiprecious stones from the board. While some may argue a game being too easy isn't a shortcoming - in fact, it's a good thing for newbie or younger players - it's pretty hard to lose at this game. In fact, if there are no more moves to make on the board the tiles are automatically reshuffled for you. I also never ran out of time.

Another beef is that there's only one game mode. Therefore, after you uncover all nine gods and plow through the story there isn't much incentive to play again - though you can try to beat your "best time" per level.

Overall, however, Heroes of Hellas is a fun and gratifying 3-in-a-row game that, while not a completely fresh experience, decorates it nicely with a Greek mythology theme and adds fun extras such as a mini-game, hero info and wallpaper, trophies and a customizable palace. Kudos to Jaibo Games for a job well done.

Music:

You can change the music by replacing the appropriate files. There are three main music files labelled music_1.ogg, music_2.ogg and music_3.ogg, there are also a couple more called music_endlevel.ogg and music_mosaic.ogg. You can find them via the following path:

C:\Games\HeroesofHellas_game\data\sounds\x.ogg where x represents the file name

If you decide you don't like the music and want to change it for some of your own favorite music you can do, but you must convert the music you choose to the ogg format. (free audio converters are readily available online). Be sure to select the correct files otherwise you may cause problems with the game. I'd back up any music files you decide to change just in case. Not sure whether the end level and mosaic music files can be changed. Once you've played the game and confirmed that it works with the new music, then it may be safe to delete the files. Don't forget to rename any files you use to the ones you are replacing.

Conclusion:
I've burnt myself oput on Match threes; that said, I did play this for an hour last night and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The following Pros & Cons sums up the game reasonably well; my advice is download this and give it a try. It's got all of the major elements that a decent match three has (apart from the RPG element of games like Puzzle quest).

Pros:

Mythology info
Characters and wallpaper a nice touch.
Easy to pick up.
Mini-games break up the action.
You can continue to make matches while the previous match is completing

Cons:
Don't really need the gods' help
Only one game mode
Game is fairly easy.

If you like the first game in the series, you can get demo's of the second and third in the series called Heroes of Hellas 2: Olympia and Heroes of Hellas 3: Athens , both from Alawar.
Alawar have followed many other game sites in that they want to install toolbars. you can avoid this by unchecking the appropriate checkboxes.

A Request for help:

Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average between 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of 'potential' cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away even more decent games.

Please leave some feedback once you've checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain what your reasons were for the feedback you post. You could also leave suggestions for improving the game, for example, this game could do with more block types for the levels editor, add more power-ups, describing the ones you think would be suitable, add some mini games (which seem all the rage in some arcade games now) or enable the user to be able to change the in game music easily.

Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to post a constructive comment.

Regards

Whiterabbit aka Stephen
