Sorry IvesJoe I had to remove the link regarding downloading free movies etc. Not allowed in these comments section. Also I think is rather illegal.

Game runs fine until the middle of the island campaign (gets thru the trucks and defend the blimp, dies during the multiple-plane attack), then crashes the video. P4HT with an GeForce 6200 vid card and 1gig ram.

Anybody got a solution???

I agree with Whiterabbit-uk. I found this to be a smooth running game with impressive graphics and nicely rendered realistic looking terrain. Best of all, you don't have to memorize a bunch of key combinations to play the game. I rate it 9/10 myself.

Nope no go as i after a while playin get error sayin "Entity has no animation" followed by "Memory acess violation" and ends with the window "game.dat has stopped workin. Windows is lookin for a solution"

Updated drivers for video & sound + Direct-X is up to date. So this game feels as it´s beta

Another promising seeming game ruined by a lack of user configurable controls and an unthinking assumption that all players will mouse with their right hand.

Controls?

The mouse motions seem counterintuitive. If I move the mouse forward I slow down or even go backwards and if I move the mouse towards the rear I speed up. Is there a way to reverse the controls?

Was looking forward to it, maybe a false pos but not worth the risk.

you could play it via a sandbox program. We've been given a few over the past few years such as Buffer Zone and Keriver.

The giveaway team test all giveaway rigorously. I cannot remember one giveaway since the project started back in 2006 having a virus or other malware. It has to be a false positive. You could create a restore point before installing the game.

Installed in desktop & laptop both on Win 7 x64 Home Premium. Yes, copying the installation code 1st to the clipboard causes registration to go OK. Unfortunately both fail with "Memory access violation". Updated desktop with new ATI driver for HD 3650 (v10.9) & changed parameters as per comment #21 (thanks for tips), but no change. I think my audio driver is up to date. But I'm not really a game player anyway. Thanks though.

You can get one of the other games in this series of games from MyPlayCity. It has similar game mechanics and uses the same game engine. in fact I'm sure most of the environments are the same. It's called Warlike Flyboys: WWIII. You can download it via the following link:

http://www.myplaycity.com/warlike_flyboys/

I hope you don't have the same problem. If you do it will be a conflict with the game engine. I've now managed to get the game to work on four different computers (Win XP Pro 32 bit, Vista Home Basic 32 bit, Vista Home Premium 64 bit and Win 7 Pro 64 bit.)

The game ran fine for me on Win 7 64 bit, 4 GB RAM. The only stutter I had was when new enemies spawned.

Am I the only one that has a problem that I'm shooting at the U.S. Navy?

.....................Moderator comment...............

As the game was made by an old enemy of America, you'd expect them to favout their own side, even if that cold war is over now. Most of the FPS games and other war based simulations center around the US and Europe being the ones shooting the enemy. I'm sure many people from all over the world will feel the same as you do when they are playing as Americans fighting their own people; for example Vietnamese players playing one of the many Vietnam War games. Though you are able to choose sides in some of the games such as Battlefield Vietnam and Vietcong 2.(Or the Chinese and Arabs in Battlefield 2)

Definitely an OK arcade helicopter game, but unfortunately I couldn't recommend it to anyone who like myself has played many a sim type games because of one thing, there is no invert Y axis option which makes the game kind of unplayable because it is very difficult to aim when you constantly point up instead of down or vise versa.

It did run fine for me under Win7 x64 Ultimate, but I did have to set the "Disable Visual themes", "Disable desktop composition" and "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" compatibility options in the properties tab. But for older games on my system those always seem to have to be set or it can't seem to keep focus on the full screen app.

This game installed and played fine on my XP sp3 machine. I was up and running in just a couple of minutes. My only concern so far is that the controls seem backwards to me. You pull back to go faster and push forward to go slower. I have a hard time getting used to that. :P Other than that I enjoy the game and intend to keep it in my games folder. I think I will be playing it on a regular basis.

Thanks Fly Games and GOTD :!:

Installed and works on Win7 X64. I won't give thumbs up or down, just say that it seems at least mildly entertaining, but without a game controller it is probably a bit too hard to use, as are most shoot-em-up games. Not for me, but some may like it.

Game.dat when the game is run is showing as a trojan by Online Armor. Rather concerned as Online Armor produces very few false positives.

I also have Online Armor and I didn't get a warning. The games are rigorously tested by the giveaway team. If they didn't and malware did get through they would lose credibility. I would suggest you are getting a false positive.

A humble observation; that’s not saying this game is bad or good. Each reader needs to decide that for themselves. The helicopters in this game are ancient. The Choctow (built by Sikorsky) was officially retired in the early 1970’s and mostly served as a medium transport for the U.S. Marine Corp in Vietnam. It was also used by the U.S. Navy as a Sub-Hunter. Now the Gazelle, built by the French company Aérospatiale, originated by a French army requirement for a lightweight utility helicopter. It attracted British interest leading to a development and production sharing agreement with the British company Westland Helicopters. A deal was signed between these two companies in 1967 and 292 Gazelles were produced. Of those, 48 Gazelles were kept by Her Majesties Armed Forces which are sometimes referred to as Armed Forces Of The Crown which encompasses the Royal Navy, British Army, & Royal Air Force. :) They were modified according to British specifications, and renamed as Puma’s.

As for this games weaponry, the missiles fire unrealistically from the sides then take these wide curves to the target. There’s not a chopper on the planet that fires missiles in that fashion. Mostly because when ignited the boosters would burn thru the fuselage making for a bad day for that pilot...lol

Adding to that WR wrote “the game ran fine on two of my6 computers. Those are terrible odds! If I were asked to rate this game, I couldn't in all honesty answer. Without playing the game start to finish, and in all the difficulty levels, any rating under those circumstances would have little to no merit. It would be a disservice to the developer. It’s much more important for a developer to get negative feedback than it is positive. From a developers standpoint it’s all good. But like I wrote at the beginning, this is just my humble observation. ;)

.........................Moderator comment.......................

Thanks for your history lesson - interesting facts. Your comment about the missiles firing unrealistically is correct, but today’s game is an 'arcade' game so realism isn't expected. As for rating a game; after many years playing these types of games I can easily make a judgment call on what I think the game is worth. With respect to negative feedback, I agree, constructive criticisms is worth a lot to any developer, but for me there was nothing wrong with the game, it installed and ran perfectly so all I could do was commend the game. I liked the game play. It's arcade style is a welcome change from the military simulations I play; for example one of my more recent acquisitions called DCS: Black Shark has nearly 300 key bindings, though you can play it via an arcade mode where you only need to remember several key bindings. Today's game is refreshingly simple and rather retro, which I love. I can just boot the game up and play without having to put much though into it.

The aim of my reviews is not to give the developer an in depth review of the game, bugs and all; it's actually to give the community an idea as to whether they think the game is worth downloading. Yes I know, each individual should really form their own opinions of the game, but not all are willing to do that. They want someone to tell them what the game may be like, which is where my reviews come in. I'm not saying they are well written, in fact I think they are rather shallow as I'm not willing to put any more time into them than is necessary because I do it voluntarily with a limited amount of time. If I was paid for my time I'd spend a lot more time playing the games and writing up a much more erudite review. I'll usually leave the constructive criticisms to other community members (though if something is glaringly obvious I will comment on it, or if the game is particularly weak in the game play department, I’ll make suggestions). There are still many community members on dial up, or on capped download limits, so don't want to download a game unless it suits their taste. I hope the time I spent writing these reviews is useful to them.

p.s. did you read my reply to your last post? i.e. Comment #47 Splotches - http://game.giveawayoftheday.com/splotches/comment-page-1/#comment-141500

I've only got 64 bit versions of win 7 installed. It definitely works on win 7 Pro, and will probably work on the 32 bit version as well. If you have the Pro or Ultimate versions and find it won't work you can download a free XP image from Microsoft that may work instead. (not available for the home editions though).

Copy the activation code which is found in the read me then reinstall the game. When the wizard finished the activation code is automatically copied into the registration field. your game should then be registered.I used the demo from Fly games home site as I'd installed it yesterday so that I could write up today's review, so I'm assuming the registration process is the same for the giveaway version?

Was Ihre andere Frage.

The game looks very nice but something is way wrong with the controls. When the game starts, all it does is nose down and turn left, my speed goes over 900, and the only way to get any kind of control is to constantly push my mouse up and right. As soon as I let go of my mouse though, back to nose down turn left!

.....................Moderator comment........................

The game works for me with no problems. Unfortunatelyit looks like this is going to be an all or nothing game . Try changing the screen resolution via the options menu. Not sure whether that will help, but it's worth a try.

Have you tried using a combination of mouse and keyboard controls? also if you're still using one of those old ball mice maybe the mouse needs cleaning; (just a suggestion)

after entering the key. It accepts the key, but gives memory access voilation message.

.........................Moderator comment.........................

Although the game works on my computers I did get the same message when I took screenshots, but not every time. I had to restart the game several times during my testing phase. It would seem the game is rather unstable as already others have complained of the same problem.

Memory access violations can be caused by a faulty program already installed on your computer that is also required to play the game. Upgrading your RAM might solve the problem. Also, this issue might occur if the sound drivers and/ or Direct X on your computer are not updated. Visit the sound card manufacturer's Web site to download the most current driver for your operating system. You can download the latest version of Direct X via the following link:

http://www.microsoft.com/directx/

Once you have checked to ensure that you have the latest drivers and DirectX, try playing the game again to see if the problems continue. If you don't know your sound and/or video card manufacturer go to the start menu and type in dxdiag in the field to the bottom left of the start menu (in Win XP you have to click on run first). you should be able to find the manufacturers via the various tabs provided in the Direct X diagnostics panel (dxdiag). The video cards are more than likely to be either NVIDIA or ATI, but there are a few other smaller video card manufacturers that have a tiny part of the video card industry, the sound card, or sound chip may be Creative labs or Realtek. Googling the manufacturer and then downloading the appropriate drivers for your system may fix the problem.

This is where software informer becomes useful. The program will list all the programs that have updates available. Updating the ones you are able may cure the problem. Also if your computer is badly defragmented you may get such problems.

Downloaded and activated just fine on my Dell 2.6Ghz 1gig ram system, this game was jumpy, sporadic, no control of the copter, uninstalled withing the 1st minute of up time, VERY LARGE FILE AND VERY BAD PIECE OF WORK

.............................Moderator comment...............................

the game ran fine on two of my6 computers; no lag, just a smooth running game. Uninstalling within one minute of play time would not give you the time to assess such a game unless you don't like this type of game. At least give a good reason for saying that the game is bad. Personally I give this a 8 out of 10. excellent arcade helicopter game.

I think this is the same game as "Helicopter Wars" at the MyPlayCity website? (Which you mentioned in your review.)

.............................Moderator comment........................

From the screenshots I couldn't tell. I have it downloaded but have not yet had time to compare both games. It will still be worth downloading todays game even if it's the same as you wont get that annoying browser opening at the close of the game.

Tried to check the MyPlayCity version of the game on two different computers and it crashed on both saying there was a problem. I'd certainly get this today while you can. I'd also recommend keeping the read me that came with the game giveaway today.

Helic:

The game downloads to a 68.2Mb zipped file containing a read me and a setup module. You'll find an activation key in the read me document. Once installed the game is 95.5Mb in size. On starting the game It installs to:

C:/Program Files/Helic

If you copy the activation code to the clipboard (right click then copy) it will automatically show up in the correct field when the game is started. Just click oky to register the game. The game plays okay on XP Pro with SP3 32 Bit, Vista Home Basic 64 bit and Win 7 Pro 64 bit.

Introduction:
Players can try their flying and shooting skills at three campaigns: Islands, Europe and the Middle East. As they complete levels, players gain access to new, more manoeuvrablelic game play helicopters, more powerful enemies and unexpected surprises. Easy game controls allow new players to quickly get in the thick of things. In addition to helicopters, some missions can be completed at the controls of combat fighters. Survival mode offers a rapid-fire shooting gallery option for gameplay. Ready for takeoff? Wheels up!

Reference accessed HERE 2nd Oct 2010

The Game:
Helic uses the same games engine as previous Fly games that have been given away such as Sky Aces: World at War, Sky Aces: The Red Baron and Sky aces: Cold War, though the game looks to have been improved somewhat. The environments are much the same with perhaps a few more buildings. All ground buildings are destructible. Flying is easy, you can use either the mouse or the keyboard to control your plane. To fire weapons use the left and right mouse buttons (chain gun and rockets). You can pick up health packs and resupply ammo and rockets by flying over bonus coins.
PicDepict.com

PicDepict.com

The game has two modes; the first is standard play which is the main campaign, where you start with a training flight then are taken through missions that take you through different locations that include European Skies, Islands and Afghanistan. In survival mode you can choose where to go from the above locations as well as choose the time of day, which include, Early morning, Sunny, Cloudy, Evening and night, you can also choose three levels of escort from Easy, Standard and Armada. Both modes have three levels of skill, Tourist, Warrior and Hardcore. The difference between the three is the number of enemies you have in the sky at any one time.

There are three helicopters to choose from, the first being the only one unlocked at the start of the game. The demo only gave me 15 minutes of play, so I didn’t get the opportunity to find out how you unlock the other two choppers. You get a Gazelle Eurocopter, a SA320 Puma and a UH34 Choctaw helicopter.

You can change the screen resolution between 800 x 600 x 32 to 1920 x 1080 x 32 with 30 different resolutions to choose from. There’s also a quality slider, which is useful if your computer isn’t so powerful. If you get any lag, reduce the screen resolution and quality settings to a point where the lag disappears. There’s also a music toggle which allows you to turn off the in game music if you wish.

Controls:
• Mouse Movement – Direction
• Q/W/E – Turns
• WASD – Power/Strafe
• F1 – Display Help
• F2 – Display Map
• Up Arrow – Low speed
• Down Arrow – Full speed
• Left Arrow – Turn & Strafe Left

Features:

• 10 helicopters based on actual models

• 3 campaigns, 20 fast-paced missions

• Survival quick game play mode

• Original soundtrack

System Requirements:

- Windows 98/ME/XP/Vista
- Pentium III processor
- 256 Mb RAM
- 50 Mb hard drive space
- 32 Mb video memory
- Sound card
- DirectX 7

Conclusion:

Overall I loved playing this game. It’s easy to pick up and hard to put down. Compared to my DCS: Black Shark Helicopter Simulation it’s the easiest helicopter game I’ve played in a long time; it's similar in game play to the many freebies available from Gametop, MyPlaycity and FreeGamePick (see below, with two big differences, 1) ... you are flying in an open 3D world (compared to flying in a scrolling environment) and 2) ... All ground objects are destructible. The game is well made and an improvement on earlier games in this series (mentioned above). It’s reminiscent of some of the arcade flying shooters I remember playing many years ago in the arcades, but today's game has much better graphics.

I think Helic is worth a good 8 out of 10 for ease of play and a well rounded campaign; however, I’m a little biased with respect to scoring this game; so some may think I’m overly generous.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Additional Information:

You can get several excellent helicopter games or similar from Gametop, for example:

Desert Hawk

Incinerate

Air Assault II

Air Assault

Also there’s some online examples such as Desert Fire online, Zenon Online, Helicopter Strike Online, which you can find via the following link, just look to the bottom of the page:

http://www.gametop.com/category/action.html

You can also get some helicopter games (some of which are the same as those from Gametop and FreeGamePick) from MyPlayCity, for example:

Helicopter Wars

Airforce Missions

Helicopter Game

Air Invasion; and you can get the following games from FreeGamePick for example:

Aerial Fire

Air Shark

Air Shark 2. Finally, there are several decent helicopter browser games which can be found HERE

If you like real helicopter sim’s a great game to buy is DCS: Black shark, which can be purchased either from Steam or Direct 2 Drive. If you consider there are nearly 300 key bindings for the game you can imagine how much of a simulation the game is. There are some older Helicopter sims that you can get from abandonware sites like Abandonia such as HIND – The Russian Combat Helicopter Simulation
