Harpoon:

In Brief:
Harpoon is a top down underwater survival shooter with simple graphics. Game play is fairly basic with you shooting fish with your harpoon gun underwater. After shooting a specific number (I didn't make a note) the wave ends and you get some upgrades to use. These are not known until you click on one of the three cards that have question marks on them. My first upgrade was increased speed of the harpoon arrows and the second was a homing harpoon the third triple arrows and the fourth double arrows. This would indicated that the cards are random, so picking the same card on a second attempt won't necessarily give you the same upgrade. The left hand indicator coloured red shows the health of your diver. Every hit from a fish takes away one level of the indicator. When it reaches zero, the diver dies and all upgrades are set to zero and you start from the first wave. The right-hand green indicator never moved. I couldn't figure out what it was for, possibly a boss fish at the end of a series of waves. I only ever managed to get to wave three due in part to my poor coordination with the key bindings.(excuse). The top left indicator tells you how many fish are left in the wave you are attempting to survive in.

When leaving the game your progress isn't saved.

The menus are exactly the same as the previous three games we've been given via Falcoware, with the W & S or Up & down arrow keys selecting the menu item then using the Enter key to activate the selection. Use the Esc key to return to the previous menus. Controllers are poorly supported, with just the ability to select from menu items using the D-pad and A to access. However to return to previous menus you still have to use a keyboards Esc key. Controllers don't work while in game. See the controls section below for details of the key bindings.

You can see a video of game play HERE.

Controls:
Swim forward = W
Swim faster = Acceleration - Shift
Turn Left = A
Turn right = D
Harpoon shooting = SPACE

Conclusion:
I found the key bindings a little hard to use but was able to play the game reasonably well. It's not a game I'd play for extended periods, more like a game for those few moments you have in between playing more involved games, or while waiting for someone or during a coffee/tea break
Notes on Security
I scanned a zipped copy of the installed game using Virus Total and it found zero hits from 63 antimalware engines. You can see the installed games security scan HERE.

The Humble site has an excellent bundle deal called Holiday Encore 2K Megahits that ends on Saturday 7pm UK time and includes Borderlands 3 Super Deluxe, Mafia: Definitive Edition, Railroad Tycoon 3, Railroad Tycoon II Platinum, Sid Meier's Railroads!, Duke Nukem Forever Collection, WWE 2K Battlegrounds + Ultimate Brawler Pass, CivCity: Rome, X-Com: Complete Pack, Hidden & Dangerous I & II and Army Men RTS. all for £13.12 or equivalent in dollars or Euro's. There's also a complete bundle of Sid Meier's games worth £380.90 for a meagre £12.20, you can find that deal HERE (ends 7pm {UK} Friday ). There are also four other bundles that include a Runescape: Paths to Adventure bundle, The tacticians Bundle, Company of Heroes Bundle and a Premier VR bundle all of which which you can fine HERE

Today (until 4pm UK/11am Eastern /8am Pacific) is your last chance to grab Saints Row IV Re-Elected a Grand Theft Auto esque like game with a comedic slant plus Wildcat Gun Machine a bullet hell dungeon crawler.

Steam also has its usual weekly sales, with Assassins Creed: Valhalla finally being released onto Steam after being an exclusive to Ubisoft and Epic for over a year. It's sold in 4 iterations, Standard, Deluxe, Ragnarock and Complete Editions with 65% to 67% off depending which version you buy. The Complete version is the best deal, but still feels expensive at £40.95 (full price is £116.99). Also returning to Steam is the RTS city builder Anno 1800, which was removed from Steam before it was released while on pre orders, when Ubisoft decided to stop selling it's latest games on Steam. (I'm still waiting for Far Cry 6 to be released on Steam as it's still exclusive to Ubisoft and Epic).

Finally, check the Steam Database sales HERE, it lists every game on sale on Steam..

Whiterabbit-uk, thought I'd mention, since this has come up a fair amount recently, there's an emulator at the Portable Freeware Collection site that may or may not help with the controller issue. It's called JoyToKey, and it's supposed to let you bind your controller to the keyboard bindings. Though in your great gaming experience you, or Jason, likely know of others. But, if not, I can't vouch for it myself. I have a generic XBox 360 controller, but I'm digging around the bungalow because I have an old joystick I want to try 1st on this ancient machine, and maybe 1 of these days I'll find it. And maybe 1 of these days I'll fix one of my better machines. And maybe 1 of these days..., actually that list would be a bigger volume than "War and Peace". But, maybe 1 of these days.... :P I won't vouch that it's clean, either. I've never had any problems with the site, but a smart person will run it through the VirusTotal site, so my vouch on that is all but irrelevant. Hope this helps. Happy gaming!

Won't work on my old Win XP system. Get the "not a valid Win 32 application" error. Don't think that's the issue. I believe it's because the game requires a dual core processor, and mine's a single. But, it was worth a try.

One reminder that I might say once a week for folks, like me, who are currently short of space. All of these weekday games, which we pretty much all get from the Falcoware folks, contain a 113 Meg identical text file. Our on top of things moderator, Whiterabbit, has determined this file has no function in the games. Perhaps is necessary for the Falcoware installer. But, I can confirm that you can delete this file from the start with no ill effects. That reduces most of these games to a very small size, as you would expect from these relatively simple offerings. The file is called 20M (20M.txt if you have Windows extension hiding turned off on your machine). It is, indeed a text file, containing computer code, but apparently not related to the game. And nobody has yet seen it touch off any warnings from the whole host of anti-virus detectors it's been submitted too, including no users every saying it set off their Anti-virus. So, you good folks can go back and delete any of those you've gotten on the weekdays here and save a lot of space, if you need it.

Thanks GGOTD, Falcoware, Mr. Sergeevich, Whiterabbit, and Jason.

delenn13,

Hi Delenn, Already got Bloons 6 on Steam. One of the guys I play Co-op Thursday evenings (Dying Light) mentioned the game-a-day started Thursday, but thanks for reminding me as I was concentrating on the game in hand at the time so it went in one ear and out the other, and it didn't really register until you mentioned it. So thanks you. I've now got a post it stuck on my monitor to remind me. I missed a few of last years because of not keeping an eye out. :)

If you haven't played any of the Bloons games, they are all decent and fun tower defence games, well worth having. Much better than any TD game we've been given here apart from one, that I've forgotten the name of; (that was later released on Steam). The early Bloons TD games are free and Bloons TD Battles 2 is free to play on Steam, but it does have in app purchases.

If any of you have played Asteroids in the arcade or on collections such as Atari Vault, etc you will find the game familiar in game play. However of all the times I've played the game in different compilations there was always left and right to rotate the space ship and also another button to accelerate it.

The sea life in the pool seems rather vicious and you have to keep on top of things to go to the next wave. I managed to get through 4 waves before the game was over.

Although the graphics looked simplistic they were not to the point where it felt generic or uninteresting as it actually presents an accurate top down view as if you were in a swimming pool and so forth.

You'll see blood spatters which means you know you are not doing too well.

While this certainly may seem like a coffee break game at first, I think it's much more than that if you're willing to give this unique arcade style game a try.

A note about the "Shaders" option in the main menu. I turned it on and noticed no visual difference versus if it was off. However older hardware may have a problem with it so if you get the game to launch just play the game and don't turn on that option.
