Yes thank-you for the response , worked on the Gateway machine , runs O.K. now , however the HP much different-difficult answer,
for the HP machine not so good ,
says #1 seller in laptops but now even after BIOS update and trying to update video driver
for the Open GL for version 1.5
was able to go from 1.0 (default) to 1.2 to now 1.4 but need 1.5 to run that game it says.
However the driver that intel supplies that will fix this,
HP and Windows won't let it install or even overwrite the default driver,
not sure what is next , frustrating there is a display driver but propietary block to it , has to be an HP fix , will have to pester them.

This game is a keeper. The only problem with this game is: I can't stop playing it. Thanks Alawar and GGAOTD.

For people with problems running the game in win 7 and 8.1: try to change the compatibilitymodus. (right-click on the *.exe >> properties >> run as "XP or Vista)

That's why there probably were only 3 comments. I'm running Win 7 64bit and this game wouldn't run for me either.

Just wondered if anyone has figured out how to fix the problem with this game crashing immediately after starting? I really want to play this game.

Keeper game, but confusing for those who don't have experience with tower defense. That's the main botch here. Help file needs rewrite. Features chart on towers and upgrades and maybe effectiveness, but since no column titles and no legend, you have to like cryptography as a hobby to decipher it. Useful details on enemies, but it's really the towers that need explained. That's much more useful for a novice. And, as someoe mentioned, you wouldn't initially think the placement method is drop and drag. It mentions the cannon ineffective on air enemies, which is true, but, looking at the graphics, it's easy to think they mean the crossbow, which is effective against them. For the 1st levels, crossbows and poison cannons are effective against the air waves, cannonball cannons and whirling blade towers aren't. Redo the help, and you've got a competitive TD game. My 11 yr old tried the game this morning. Her expert (on TD games) opinion: great game, challenging for experienced users without being frustratingly impossible. The game runs smoothly, the graphics look great, she expects to get a lot of fun out of this. She scores the game 9.5 out of 10. So, many thanks to Alawar and GGotD!

Enjoy it!

Love this game, please would like more of these tower defenses. Would have posted a review earlier but been too busy playing. Running on a HP Laptop, WIN 8.1 64 bit 6 GB RAM 1 TB hard drive and no install or running problems. Thank you very much for this and I hope to see many more in this genre.

..............................Moderator Comment..............................

It's a pity I didn't have time to write a review myself as TD games are one of my favorite genres. The heat and other responsibilities left me with no time to post one.

The game comes with no instructions on how to play it, useless and a waste of my time to figure it out. The help doesn't explain a lot other than what you can get and upgrade but not how. Uninstalled.

..............................Moderator Comment...................................

Hi Pete, the initial tutorial at the very beginning tells you how to play the game. however Tower Defence games all tend to have the same basic game play, with you placing towers at strategic points on the map. In this game you drag one of the towers located at the bottom right of the game arena onto an appropriate square. As you drag a tower across a grid appears, showing you where you can drop the tower. That's basically all you need to know. It's always best to place the first few towers strategiacallt where they can do the most damage, which are at corners, so they cover a greater amount of the path.

All of that comes later in the game... IF.. you can survive that long.
Would be nice if more was explained in detail about what the various available units were and how best to use them, but I get the impression this is originally a "mobile app game" converted to run on a PC, and those are generally very sparse as far as instructions to save space on mobile devices.

Installed and runs fine under Windows XP SP3.
I don't particularly like "tower defense" style games, but this one runs at least as well as any others of the genre I've seen.

it's worth a try, but it's surely not worth 10 Bucks, and its getting annoying after a shortwile, if you love Tower Defense Games, try "Plants vs. Zombies" on PC, Android and iOs, i'm playing it for months, and best of all it's mostly for free and there is also a new and much enhanced Version 2!!!

...........................Moderator Comment...........................

If by version 2 you are referring to the 3D version, there really is no comparison. The latest version of plants and zombies is almost like playing a first person shooter and nothing like the brilliant original release.

I really do appreciate the GGOD team and Alawar for all the games which they provide.

I am using a Win7/64 Home laptop and haven't had this problem before but I have downloaded and installed successfully twice but each time when I try to open the game I get this message (apparently Windows couldn't find a solution to the problem online):

It seems with the large percentage of problems like this that there MUST be a problem with the packaging. A little help would be appreciated. I found no help for this on the forums page. And all the other suggestions have been followed.

Thanks to all for your inputs.

GOD bless you all.

Unfortunatley I can't work out that the problem could e from the error message you have sent. There's no clues. The following article may be of some use:

won't work for me on win 8.1.

The installer shows up in task manager as a running task but it is dead in the water and doing absolutely nothing!

Tried running in Win7 compat mode, tried running as admin but with no result.

The installer file launches and then absolutely nothing happens.

Got it to run as administrator - seems like a nice little tower defense game. Quite fast with little to no explanation on the tower types or enemies, and no indication of what type of enemies in next wave (unless I missed something in the minimal tutorial). You can pause the game while laying towers which is very nice.

For those getting the .exe has stopped working message, try the DEP - Data Execution Protection - exemption listed in the forum topic WhiteRabbit linked in post 3. Not hard to do. Though the forum says to do that if you get a message saying that's the problem, I've found you don't always get that message, something even mention in the forum paragraph mentioned. Sometimes the problem causes the games and other programs to just not launch. Worth a try. The instructions linked in the forum are for Windows XP. Here's some simple ones for 7 from Microsoft, and u can probably find 8 and 10 here somewhere, too: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Change-Data-Execution-Prevention-settings?SignedIn=1

It could be that you need to change the security settings from the original installation (not your add on security, but the basic security tha Win 7 comes with at installation, the giveaway wrapper is protected by a security protocol called Themida, which can be read as a threat by your security andd is what is probably stopping you from installing any games. (though the giveaway file is as safe as can be). Thousands of community members every week have no problems installing these games, so it's almost certain its the way you have your window installation set up. Google it for information. If you continue to have problems, pleas epost it over in the main forums. More community members are likely to respond, especially as you posted this late in the day when the majority of community members have already been and gone.

To the moderator who answered Harold's message,

This means then that the server is on Pacific time where its day starts? Which would mean that for people in Australia and New Zealand, the game giveaway would start sometime into Sunday for Saturday's game?

Just trying to clarify things for those who live around the globe from us?

............................Moderator Comment...............................

Depending where in Australia you live, (my relatives all live in the Melborne area, which is 10 hours ahead of British GMT and Perth is 8hours ahead, the giveaway would start at 6pm/4pm Saturday and 6pm/4pm Sunday)

What an odd question for Alawar, the purveyors of 1,000,001 HOGs and match-3s, to ask us: "Tired of boring tower defense games?" Well, no actually. Tower defence is my favourite game genre. I don't know any boring TD games, and I don't recall ever being offered one on GGOTD before.

Needless to say I'm pleased with today's game. It is rough around the edges and its graphics are garish, to say the least, but it is a proper TD game, and therefore it is good fun.

To those who are unfamiliar with the genre, I highly recommend two series of Flash games available free online at Kongregate: Gemcraft and Kingdom Rush. Complete and utter escapist fun.

Thanks as ever, Alawar and GGOTD. :)

I also had the "Program has stopped working" error. I tried compatibility mode, updating the graphics driver, uninstalling and reinstalling, disabling AV, all to no avail. It's a shame, because I like this type of game much better than all the HOGs that we constantly see here. I checked the responses to other community members and the generic FAQs, none of which helped. Hopefully someone figures it out and posts something here later today.

Sadly 2 of 3 W7-x64 mchines won't run or load, something about display drivers not up to date and doesn't like my video cards. Hmmm. may try compatibility mode, don't want to sweat over it that hard for this game, runs after relogogging-reboot or its gone.

............................Moderator Comment.................................

Your Display drivers just need updatiing. these arerelated to your graphic cards. to find put what graphic chipset you have (usually either Nvidia or ATI) open up the direct X diagnostic panel (type dxdiag in the serach firld), then open up the display tab. from there you can see what your card or chipset is. Then go the the appropriate developers site and click on the driver tab, fillout the information asked for and then you should be able to get the latest drivers for your graphics card/chip. It's a simple job to do and should solve the problem you are having.

Downloaded okay but crashes when you try to run the game! I would think that with so many people having the same problem and your refering to the forums page is no help you could at least check into wht it would be crashing for so many users! We all can't be doing the same thing wrong, and I doubt our computers are all set up in the wrong way. I don't have a problem with most of the games from here but every now & then I get one that won't run no matter what I try. Running in compatibility mode isn't working to correct the problem either. Running Win8.3 64 bit, I have more than enough memory & harddisk space so that's not the problem. I have neer had windows get back to me with a solution to a program crash "when they find a solution", has anyone else? Too bad looks like a fun game. I'll try it on my laptop running Win7 & see what happens.

..................................Moderator comment................................

Out of the thousands of users that have actually downloaded this game, the number of community members who are having problems would be regarded as insignificant. The wrapper could be causing problems for some, though its still more than likely to be the computer that is causing the problem.

The game doesn't crash for me on three separate computers 2 running win 8.1 and one running Win 7, so it's not possible for me to check on what else could be casuing the problem apart from one of the possible solutions posted in the forums. Have you read Mikes suggestion below? It does mention it in the forums, but only if you get a message, apparently you don't always get a message. Check your DEP settings.

Downloaded in 6 minutes, installed okay, plays great. I've played the entire first level and have not had any of the problems other folks have had. I have Windows 7, AMD Quad-Core Processor 3.6GHz with 8GB of ram. If it won't run it might be slower processors, not enough ram, video card needs updated...not sure. I searched for people having problems with the game and didn't find anyone else online with similar issues. However, they did say it's a beast to actually get rid of as the Uninstall doesn't get everything. Those deleting it might want CCleaner to help them delete the extra stuff in their registry (always make a backup and don't delete anything if you don't know what you're doing). :) I think my kiddos will love this one too so I'm going to put it on their computers as well.

Ok Windows 8.1 x64 Pro. M&S sliders, full screen. Just played first level on Easy-Normal. Died a lot at first but the gems earned remain from game to game so don’t sweat that flying critters may beat you. Just replay the set game over & over. Bulk up specific towers at the fliers fixed route. At first I nearly quit thinking game was rigged in cheap way such that fliers were unstoppable which would kill your castle every time and where’s the sport in that? I was confused by Help which seemed to indicated fliers couldn’t be killed or something like that. Once have hang of that the game so far is like a decent tower one. No idea how it will evolve. Just from a start 8.75/10 for fans. Hard could be challenge, extra bennies tho. Thanks GOTD.

Hey I'm using Win 8.1 and the game downloaded, installed and played fine. I'm a big fan of Tower Defense games and this one, although a bit frantic at times, is a lot of fun. Plenty of different monster, weapons and power ups to keep you entertained. IMO one of the better offerings here. Thank you very much!

NOTE TO MODERATORS: Your human/robot catchpa on your "Share Your Ideas" form does not work in XP. The "pick the pictures" thing appears within the message frame, so it is impossible to see the top part (the question). If you fight with it you can get it to move down, but then the send button is hidden and you cannot move it back up again, so you cannot actually send your results. I had to use the alternative form to send my ideas!

Alawar created Goblin Defenders: Battles of Steel ‘n’ Wood as a multi-platform game, *maybe* more intended for tablets/cells -- it's done OK on Google's Play store as a free app with in-app purchases "$0.99 - $5.99 per item": https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alawar.GoblinDefenders1&hl=en

I didn't check availability at iTunes or the Windows store. As a tablet/cell/PC game, as opposed to a PC game later re-written or ported to something like Android, folks playing in Windows *might* find it a bit slow or boring or generally lacking in what you've come to expect.

Goblin Defenders was created with cocos2d-x [ http://www.cocos2d-x.org/products ], in case some one wants to try their luck searching for possible cures if it won't run for you -- I didn't see anything that looked promising on the 1st four pages of Google results. The only hint I can give is that going by one file in the game's folder it uses OpenGL -- OpenGL handling can be weak with some graphics hardware.

LOL! I feel your pain, Swamp Thing. There's a dizzying array of creatures and weapons to learn. Read through the help files, set it on 'Normal' skill level, and then I suggest just playing for a while and see if you can figure things out as you go.

Have played through the first round only at this point.

Downloaded/extracted/etc win 7/64. Ran into the crashing problem (.exe has stopped working, Windows is closing down, will search for solution, etc). Changed compatibility to Win 98 Service Pack 3, Run as Admin and it worked fine after that. I do have to click to give permission every time I play, but that's cool.

Giggled at some of the monsters - the bonus sheep and the skeletons that resurrect.

Quibbles: 25 waves on the first level seems excessive and long, even on fast-forward. Once I had a good set of towers set up, I mostly sat back and watched and... that was it. My one problem with this genre. It's either slow as molasses or next to impossible.

Tutorial was confusing, since it was all "show" and no "tell". It took me a few minutes to realize that you had to DRAG the towers onto the playing field (I was trying to click). Also it would be nice to know what each tower does when you hover over the icon (ie: this tower shoots ground troops only, etc).

Glad that the gems count without having to click on them, since they sometimes overlay the towers and clicking on them would bring up the tower menu, sending me into a clicking panic to bring me back to the playing field.

That's all I have, after playing the first level. I'm either going to love this game obsessively or I'm going to get bored with 25 waves per level. Can't tell yet and probably won't be able to until further into the game. Usually I play more before I review, but all the comments about crashing led me to want to see if I could even get into the game at all early into the day.

Tried on three different PCs, running Win 7, Win 8.1 and even an old Vista machine.

I think I've sussed the problem.

Although Alawar's installer allows you to change the install directory, doing so will stop the program from working.

IF (and only if) you use the default c:/games folder, the program will install and run. There must be embedded code in the .exe that looks to that folder for DLL and other files.

This is seriously lame.

Downloaded and runs find on my Win7-64 laptop. (For those having trouble running the game, I'll note that I have an inexpensive computer with a mediocre video card.)

I haven't played many tower defense games, so I can't compare it, but I'm enjoying it so far. Graphics are funky, 'enemies' are creative, game play is quick. There's lots to learn about strengths and weaknesses of the enemies - not sure I'll have the patience to play it through to the end, but it won't be boring. (I'm sure a lot of it is standard TD protocol, so it won't be so complicated for regular players of the genre.)

Question - The GOTD games come zipped, and I generally extract them before starting the install, as per the instructions in the 'Read Me'. Is this necessary? I notice they come with a Winrar self-extracting feature.

Thanks!

The read me has an error in it. default folder is (with XP, presumably with all) C:\Games\GoblinDefenders_Game

As to the game - surprisingly addictive. It looks like a fighting game, but is actually a "thinking" game. My only complaint is that the difficulty curve is too sudden. It goes from ridiculously easy to ridiculously difficult in one sudden jump. A more even rise in difficulty would have been appreciated.

installed ok under vista 32bit does not render in windowed mode but plays ok'ish in fullsceen mode, very laggy user interface
feels like a beta release version of the game with the graphics engine not fully developed IMHO. tried several runs through... don't have time to spend on more goes at the moment.

Loaded with no problems on Win7 64bit machine. Not a bad tower defence game. Makes a nice change from all of the HOG's. Thank you.

Downloaded and installed without problems on Win8.1 64bits. Game wouldn't start. Started the problem solver for compatibility, found the right settings on the second attempt. Game works fine now.
As for the game itself, not my cup of tea, so I'm not gonna play it for a review. My daughter likes tower defense games, I'll turn her loose on this later today.
