Hi everybody and Whiterabbit-UK. :-)

GAOTD users reported problems with these antiviruses/firewalls, in past months/years: Avast, Avg, BitDefender, Comodo, Kaspersky, Norton/Symantec, pados.hu TinyWall, Zemana antilogger/antimalware.
If you have one of those AV, you could try these possible solutions:
1) If the package has been correctly downloaded, right-click it, click properties and:
- Win8, 8.1, 10 users --> tick/select the unblock checkbox, click apply, click ok.
- WinXP, vista, 7 --> click the unblock button, click apply, click ok.
2) If the package has been correctly downloaded, put the setup.exe and the setup.gcd (or their entire folder) in the whitelist of your antivirus
3) Disable the real-time/on-access scanning, just the time to download/install the software (then re-enable that function)
4) Disable your AV completely, just the time to download/install the software (then re-enable it)
5) Boot windows in safe mode with networking, just the time to download/install the software (sometimes this is necessary with kaspersky antivirus)

By the way in these months/years, almost all the engines on the mentioned web services that are problematic for some GAOTD users, i.e. AVG, AVIRA, AVAST BITDEFENDER, KASPERSKY, (NORTON) SYMANTEC, showed NO PROBLEMS.

My download/install/start-the-game experience with the game of today:
No problems during download.
No problems detected after doing scans with Windows10 Defender, SAS free 6.0.1230, MBAM free 2.2.1.1043, EEK free 12.0.0.6971, GSAM 3.0.67 (all definitions updated).
No problems detected after I've sent the package to (or checked previous results on) metadefender (the package is too big for the other web services: virustotal, jotti, virscan).
About GAOTD setup.exe, web services found these false positives:
- Virustotal engine CrowdStrike Falcon (ML) shows malicious_confidence_73% (D).
- Metadefender engine VirITeXplorer shows Trojan.Win32.DownLoader16.CH.
- virscan engine Fprot shows W32/Felix:P:Lastsect_unkn!Eldorado.
No problems during installation.
No problems also after doing scans post-installation (with the same tools).
No problems at game startup and when changing its options.

I'm using:
- Windows 10 home/standard x64.
- DEP always on.
- Resolution 1920x1080, color depth 32bit, refresh rate 60Hz.
- Custom scaling 150%.

Hope this helps.

Thanks to the GAOTD team, in particular to Whiterabbit-UK!
Follow the white rabbit, guys!
Thanks for the game to RainbowGames, BigFishGames, MyPlayCity!

Hi Xilolee

Hi WR-UK!

Thanks!

Let's hope this will avoid all the comments about antivirus blocking the software and the users will concentrate on the game only.

I hope so. :) I may copy your comment over to the FAQ's thread.

xilolee, FYI, When I went to Win 10, even disabling it no longer worked, but if I scan the file with the virus protection (Windows Defender in my case), it allows the file to run without any trouble. I haven't had a problem since.

Hi Margaret. :)

Disabling what? Windows 10 defender?

Reply   |   Comment by xilolee  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

xilolee, Disabling Windows 10 Defender does not work, but on the right-click menu you can "scan with Windows Defender" and then it no longer has a problem with running the file normally.

Garden Rescue: Christmas Edition

In Brief

A tower defense game with gardens and a Christmas theme.

garden 001
garden 002
Suggestions:

Whether you like or dislike Garden Rescue: Christmas Edition please give some feedback about your opinion of the game, for example, what you liked or disliked about the game, and how it could be improved from your point of view. If you don't like this genre at all, please explain why. What improvements would change your opinion? There are thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content such as better or more original mini games, or a level editor that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you. Maybe you think the graphics are a little dated and are in need of re skinning, or maybe you've just had enough of the genre and want to see something different or something with more originality?

If you miss today's game giveaway you can always get the game via MyPlayCity 24/7 HERE and the original Garden Rescue HERE. If you prefer Garden Rescue: Christmas Edition on Steam you can also buy this game via the Steam platform HERE for £2.79/$3.99

garden 003
garden 004
Installation:

The game downloads to a 133 MB zip file that unzips to three files, (a setup.gcd security wrapper, the set up file and a read me). Those with multiple hard drives are able to save games on any drive they wish. The newly installed game is 146 MB in size. The game installs to the following path by default, but can be changed by the user if you prefer:

C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPlayCity.com\Garden Rescue - Christmas Edition

Four shortcuts are installed to the desktop. three of which can be safely deleted (Play Online Games, MyPlayCity Games and shortcuts to a free online game which vary each week). Also, if you don't like icons installed to the quick launch task bar, make sure you uncheck the box when the additional tasks window appears (after the Select Start Menu Folder window)

garden 013
The Game:

Garden Rescue: Christmas Edition is basically the same game as Garden Rescue except it has a Christmas theme added. It's also very similar to another game called Garden Defense (also available via MPC HERE).

There are three gameplay modes, Private, Sergeant, and General which you can change whenever you boot up the game. and via the options menu there is a choice of a custom or system cursor as well as wide screen support and windowed modes. You can switch off tips, which are on by default and of course the usual music and sound sliders.

When playing you can adjust the speed at which the enemy travel along the garden paths via a button located to the top right of the playing arena. You can also pause the game.

The aim of the game is to protect your Christmas trees from being taken by the invading insects. If they manage to get to the home where the tree is situated, they will take it and try to get back to their home base. If they manage to pick up the tree they insects can still be stopped before they return home, but if they have picked up the tree it will be dropped where the insect was destroyed so can be picked up much quicker when the next round of insects starts. If you manage to survive to the last round a boss insect will appear. if a boss insect takes the tree they will destroy the tree instead of tasking it back to their home base.

garden 014
garden 015
You have several types of plants to protect your garden, some such as the pea are dedicated to ground based invaders others such as the Corn plant can destroy flying invaders and others such as the Cactus to both. Some will slow the insects down, making it easier to destroy them e.g. the Sundew and others such as the Camomile enhance plants near them. There are seven types of defensive plants available, but not all are available at the start of the game.

There are 20 different types of insect that can attack your garden, these include both ground based insects and flying insects. Every so often, the plants will spit out coins which can be used to buy more plants to defend your garden. You have to pick these coins up by moving the mouse cursor over them. Click on them and they are added to the money you already own (at the bottom left). Every so often a plant is upgraded to a more efficient plant that has a wider range and faster reload times. At the end of some levels you are awarded new defensive plants and also special weapons will appear occasionally that help defend your garden such as freezers that stop insects in their tracks for several seconds and a spring that throws individual ground based insects off the path; the bomb does the same but will throw a group of insects off the path and the lawn mower that removes all insects from the path. There are others such as the air strike, gas attack, and hurricane. Twelve of the 20 insects can also use special shields to protect themselves, and each insect has their own attributes, for example the weevil has low health and slow speed so are individually easy to kill, but they do travel in large compact groups so can be quite dangerous, sometimes they use tiles that protect them from harm for a short time, other insects such as the ladybug and midge can fly so require different plants to destroy them. Then you have the boss insects that are much more difficult to destroy for example the gigantic snail and flier.

garden 016 mapimages hosting
garden 017
In the main menu you'll find a book that contains details of all the various plants, insects and tools available in game. The Plant section tells you about the plants in the game. The Insect section tells you how difficult it is to destroy them and the third section shows you the tools you can purchase to help you kill the invading insects.

Over time, you get new plants and extras added to your inventory (at the bottom), which you can buy with the coins you get from the plants you protect, to add strategically to the different parts of the garden. Sometimes, when you have destroyed groups of insects, a piece of jewelery may appear on the path. Click on it, and you will get more gold coins for it. Also, after every several levels, instead of buying plants, they are parachuted down at intervals. In these types of levels you need to be extra careful where you place your plants, enhancers and tools to ensure you don't lose your Christmas trees. :)

There is also a Trophy room. Trophies are earned for having done certain things and for having completed a certain percentage of the game.

Conclusion:

A decent tower defense game inspired by (though nothing like) the brilliant Plants and Zombies TD game that is well worth downloading. it has all the usual features you'd expect in a TD game. Great family fun.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank MyPlayCity for giving away Garden Rescue: Christmas Edition minus the usual MPC check boxes and also to the game giveaway team, as always, for securing other ways to get free games, in this case Steam keys.

The latest free game over on Origin is still the old classic Dungeon Keeper. You can get it HERE and see a couple of videos of game play HERE and HERE Please note that you do require the Origin game platform to be able to download and install the game.

All previous giveaways from the Ubisoft turns 30 are all available for free this weekend only and include Assassins Creed III, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, Rayman Origins, The Crew, Beyond Good & Evil and FarCry 3: Blood Dragon. All are premium games, tohugh a few such as Beyond good & Evil are starting to look a little dated, still I highly recommend all of them, in particular Assassins Creed III and The Crew. If you missed any of the previous giveaways, this is the last opportunity to get them for free. You do require a free Ubisoft account and the free uPlay client installed to get the games, which you will find HERE. Unfortunately the free copy of Trainz v1 has ended.

This is an addicting game. I played for a few hours and found it challenging at the easiest level--I'm not the quickest player! Some levels I had to play 3 or 4 times in order to get through it.

I've tried Garden Rescue Christmas Edition today and here are my thoughts. This is a tower defense type of game. Place plants to shoot down bees and bugs to keep them from getting to your trees. As you play, more plants will be rewarded and it gets more difficult. I tried it out, it has nice graphics and a tutorial to get you up and playing. I played it for 15 minutes and got through the first level and kinda enjoyed it. If you like these types of games, get it. If not, I doubt if your mind will be changed by this game. I didn't play it long enough to really explore it because this isn't my type of game but if it looks interesting to you, try it out.

Just did tutorial & a level and looks fun. Colorful and so far seemed fairly balanced. Replay if don't get 3 stars just to get feel of game. Read the tips book for details on what to expect from higher order bugs. Gonna take some serious strategy I think.
Nice little quick timer esp if Tower Defense fan. Thanks GOTD

Hi Meisie

Have you used any other email on this site? If so, check those as well. There's a possibility the link may have been sent to the first email you used. Otherwise I don't know what could be wrong. I use email links usually and have no problems, though I'd already signed into my admin account today, so got a direct download. Tried a link that I though would work, but they don't for me either now. Just get a 404 message. sorry.

I will start by saying MERRY CHRISTMAS to all who can hear it, followed by bless yu, or happy holidays for those who are not Christian. There is a school in usa in the news that I like. It is proof that people now do know that Political correctness has gone overboard. They do not agree with the silliness that has developed for the last 10 years or so. I myself say' use common sense', but no need to be silly or go to far with political correctness. I PLAYED This garden game to level 2 so far and I like it. I thought it was a builder type game, but it is a Tower Defense type game. Still worthwhile to play or download.

OK, I've downloaded and played this one. A little slow on the download (mostly due to my slow internet connection), but loaded up and ran without any issues whatsoever. Registration was transparent, play is smooth and enjoyable, thanks for a great game. As I said before, Tower Defense games are my favorite genre and are hard to come by these days.

Fun little game, nice tutorial level, all in all seems pretty good although it is obviously based on Plants vs Zombies it manages to do it's thing slightly differently. Can't think of anything negative to say.

Downloaded and installed without problems, Win7/64. I like tower defense games, and this is a fun one. I've played the first few levels and the attackers and defenses are well done, gameplay is solid. The easy setting is a little challenging after the first few levels, so the harder settings should be challenging enough for experienced players.

Thanks GGOTD, MyPlayCity, and Whiterabbit.

First of all, I love this game! A lot! I actually own it and the standard non-Xmasy one as well.

Right out of the gate; installed and ran fine on Win10, whatever version Microstupid forced on us with Comodo as the AV.

This game is a great one if you like this genre, like the aforementioned Plants vs. Zombies, Monster Mash (which I keep begging for a second one of) and others. It’s fast paced, the graphics are decent, the music...mute it m’kay? The rest is good. Keeps you involved and focused. I’m usually pretty decent at this kind, but there are a few levels on this (like the ones they give you the plants, not you buy them) I can’t hit gold on, no matter what I do. This is good and challenging. You can buy upgrades for the plans, coins and other sorts of bits appear when you kill some of the bugs. The costumes for the critters are actually pretty cute, honestly. The same with the snowy backgrounds and what is in the water. This a good, decent game which kids and adults will both enjoy

This gets a huge, enthusiastic thumbs up from me with the request of another one in this series to the developer!

Whiterabbit-uk don't forget to check that the offending posters IP is static before you ban it as if it belongs to a dynamic pool such as dynamic adsl/fibre or cell phone/dialups you'll end up blocking an innocent when their current connection drops and a new IP is assigned and their old banned IP gets assigned to someone else.

Happy Christmas to everyone! (Here in the US it is prohibited by the PC Police to say "Merry Christmas", so this is my next best offering.) I just wanted to thank Whiterabbit for finally getting us a nice Tower Defense game, my favorite genre. And thanks to the rest of the crew at GAOTD, I know that WR doesn't work by himself.

bebop, why is it prohibited to say Merry Christmas by the PC Police in the US?

Reply   |   Comment by Hughjocapivvy  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Hughjocapivvy, in the US, the Political Correctness Police think that if you say "Merry Christmas", you may offend a non-Christian member of our society, therefore the Christian majority (in the thinking of the PC Police) has to remove any references to their religion from public view. We are no longer ruled by the majority, but are now ruled by the offended minority.
BTW, the Political Correctness Police does not actually exist as a physical entity, but as a mindset of our politicians. But the effect is as real as if it were written in law.

Hughjocapivvy,

It's not! So, from an American, MERRY CHRISTMAS! I say it to my customers all day long this time of year! They say it back. The stores are all playing Christmas carols, and Santa's at the mall. The season is safe!
I am not a fan of this type of game, but will download to try, since it's a Christmas game! I love Christmas games!

Reply   |   Comment by Lisa  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Hugh, don't believe everything you read. There are no Political Correctness Police in the USA. Some people feel saying Merry Christmas ignores non-Christians, and some think that Merry Christmas is another way to try and force religion down people's throats (a tactic not unheard of by the Christian far right, and some on the far left go ludicrously in the other direction), so some say "Happy Holidays" instead. And some businesses, always so ridiculously image conscious that they are scared to lose even one penny from saying the wrong thing, say "Happy Holidays". So there are some competing organizations here that fight over what people say, but they're hardly in control. And, many who don't like political correctness don't like it because it protests when they make racial/sexual/ethnic slurs, much more than when they say "Merry Christmas".

But, despite the fact that it seems to be a touchy subject for a few people here, there's no PC "War on Christmas" in the USA. Sure, there are isolated stories here or there, but they're isolated. Like winning the lottery. lol. This is just a phony straw man that some far right politicians and commentators use to keep themselves in the public eye (often deflecting attention from some of the real problems they helped cause).

I hope this forum won't turn into a phony "War on Christmas" debate, instead of a game forum. Haven't had the opportunity to download yet, myself

Hugh, in America, we say what we want. It's called Democracy. We like it. Even if it means we sometimes make hyperbolic claims about things that bug us.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Political correctness has become the bane of the western world. I do agree with some aspects of PC, but too be honest, there are so many things that come under the umbrella of being PC these days. I was listening to a discussion on the radio while being taken to the hospital last week, where a particular discussion which can't be mentioned here because it is a little sensitive for a family site, however, what was being discussed I often say to my wife at certain times of the month, all in innocence, but there is a campaign in the UK to have such conversion added to this PC debacle. I was surfing the net the other day and while eating some segments of orange, a thought popped into my head concerning a guy who used to compete in a series of international competitions called Superstars; where leading athletes of the time would compete in various disciplines such as track and field events, as well as gym (squats, pull ups and dips) as well as some of the things they do in the iron man competitions of recent years. This particular guy, called Brian Jacks was an Olympic judo medal winner from the early 80's and was extremely competitive, winning the international series twice in the late 80's and apparently still holds world records for some of the disciplines, for example doing 69 dips in 60 seconds. He used to bring on a crate of Jaffa oranges and eat the lot throughout the day. He moved to Thailand 11 years ago after getting fed up with the way the UK had changed over the years. He owned a gym, where he taught judo, but got so fed up of the rules that were being imposed, for example a health and safety officer came to visit one day. He ushered her into his office and was immediately asked whether the fridge in the room had been passed by Health & Safety? He said all he used the fridge for was to keep ice cubes for sprains and bottled water for drink. He was told he still had to get the fridge certified. They then said the taps on the wash basin in the corner of the room required signs above each tap (both written and brail) so that anyone who was either color blind or blind blind could tell which tap was for cold and which for hot, despite there being a tradition in the UK of hot being on the left and cold on the right. Both taps were color coded, but that wasn't enough. He said he didn't have any blind people practicing judo at his gym, but they said he would still have to label the taps, even though it was his personal office, used by no one else, once inspected no exceptions were allowed. There were lots of other examples of how things have changed, in many cases for the worse here in the UK and no doubt in Europe (many have been imposed by the European Union) and the States. He was told he faced fines and court and even jail time if he didn't comply with the new regulations. He said he got so fed up of the creeping changes over the decade prior to his Superstars days a decade earlier, that he decided to move away from the UK despite loving the country and moved to Thailand, where he lives on very little, playing golf every day. He said you can play golf at one of 50 plus golf courses dotted around the capital and for a pittance compared to the UK where you have to pay thousands of pounds a year for membership of many golf clubs, on top of the course fees every time you play. He lives well and healthily off less than a quarter of what we spend each month on food and other essentials here in the UK. He purchased a small hotel from the proceeds of the sale of his Gym in the UK where he rents out rooms for between £100 to £150 a month, which allow him to live a relatively high life compared to how he lived in the UK. When the kids leave home I may even leave for Thailand myself. The earnings I get from my properties would pay for a couple of rooms and leave me with around 90% of my income, most of which goes each month here on essentials, tax and local rates. . We married in Bangkok and I was so impressed with the Thai people I didn't want to leave and have always meant to return. All I need to do now is persuade my wife that it would be a good move. lol. :)

Why the heck is this entire post allowed in this forum? It has absolutely nothing to do with the game given away! For the moderator to participate in the conversation instead of deleting it as he should is ridiculous!

The game looks as if it put together by an intern who had nothing better to do. The graphics are bad and cluttered. The mismatch of colors makes it almost impossible to see. The game play is repetitious and quickly boring. This company should quit allowing teenage boys to make games for them if that is what they are doing. It certainly appears that way.

Well, WR, I might point out that Thailand has a rate of roping it's children into child porn that the UN claims is only eclipsed by Sri Lanka. At least 750,000. And, though it's nominally a constitutional monarchy, it's had 19 of those constitutions since 1932 and 2 major political crises and 2 coups in the last 10 years. The difficulties of the last crisis in 2013/14 still resonate and the new constitution is still not approved. They've been under military juntas more than once recently, and many analysts will tell you that the military is still the real power, vice the people. Which is ok, unless you run afoul of the powers that be, then the penalties might be worse than fines and suits if you don't comply. Much worse. Not tp mention catching a stray bullet during a clash between the military and civilians. Democracy has it's costs. Oligarchy has different costs.

But I do respect your always well thought out opinions. I guess I just feel that things aren't as bad as some think. Especially over something as minor as saying Merry Christmas. But, maybe I'm wrong. My last word. I hope. Unless I'm attacked. Which I doubt. I think Flusher has a point. I originally posted only because I thought Hugh was getting a skewed picture of the USA. So I'm going to try and let this die. Sorry.

I think my comment in reply wasn't really to the point, but sort of associated with PC. Times are always changing, evolving, regressing; sometimes for the good sometimes for the worse. I look back on the time I've been on this earth and although there has been some negative changes over the last few decades, overall, I think the standard of living, at least in Europe and America has improved dramatically. I remember as a young child being bathed in a dolly tub in front of an open fire, with no wall to wall carpets, the kitchen had worn flagstones, with no bathroom or central heating. Water was heated via the fire in the main living room and the outside toilet was flushed by waste water from the kitchen sink. I share my bedroom with my sister and brother until we moved when I was about 10. In winter my father would light a paraffin heater temporarily to warm up our bedroom before we went to bed. Now we have expensive wooden flooring, all the windows are double or triple glazed with expensive glass and when it's cold the whole house is heated. One of the things I miss is the windows no longer freeze over in winter, leaving those amazing frost patterns that I remember as a child. Diets have changed significantly over the last 50 years, with food available cheaply from all over the world and health care improved beyond anything we had in the 50's and 60's. When my aunts and uncles emigrated to Australia in the 1960's the cost of telephoning them was around £2 a minute. The equivalent cost now, taking into account inflation etc would be £64 for a minutes conversation, now we can talk to anyone virtually anywhere in the world for free using various applications such as Skype. I've chatted more with my relatives in Australia in the last few years than the rest of my life combined; amazing.

watcher13, Thanks for your explanation. I agree. Some politicians use any excuse just to remain in the public eye and be seen to be "supporting something". My father was correct. He always said the easiest and only way to tell when a politician was lying was to watch his/her lips. When they move - they're lying.
