The Game

G-Dino's Jungle Adventure is a side scrolling runner game with cartoon like graphics. Avoid the hairy monsters, pick up the fruit/food to score points (each item is worth 20 points) and jump over obstacles such as pits.

I found the game bugged, with failed jumps i.e. when I pressed the space button to jump my character didn't jump), this was a recurring issue and I wasn't able to progress very far. The beginning of the level also has the problem that when you make your first jump over the first pit you cannot avoid hitting one or two of the orange eyed fur balls, (see the images below).

You start the game with three lives, if you hit any monster you lose a life, if you fall into a pit you lose any life you have left and have to start from the beginning. The game is all about timing your jumps perfectly. You can run over smaller gaps if the leading edge is higher than the far edge, if it's revered on either a short or long gap, you need to jump, or you lose a life. I spent half an hour trying to get past the first two monsters, and always lost at least one life without fail within the first distance of 10, but more often than not was left with only one life, which was soon lost, so had yet again to start from the beginning. Often I'd not get to a distance of 20 before having to start again, partly due to either the jump bug or the positioning of the hairy monsters. From my perspective, there is no way that you can avoid losing a life right from the outset of the game. This alone is a big no-no for me; I have far superior runner games in my library and have played much better free games like this; for example, there's a 2D version of my favorite AAA parkour game Mirrors Edge which you can get free as an .apk or browser version (just Google Mirrors Edge 2D). You used to be able to get a downloadable windows version as well, but I wasn't able to find any safe links for it in the time I had available. There is no options to change anything for example the key bindings are locked, however the only key you need to know is the jump key, which can be activated by any of the arrow keys. The game starts in a small window, but you can change it to full screen by clicking on the button in the top left of the screen. To start the game use the mouse pointer or any of the arrow keys. To close the game down click on the X in the top left hand corner of the screen. Five shortcuts are installed to the desktop, the only one you need to keep is the shortcut top the games executable. The rest can be safely deleted. The game installs to the following path by default, but you can change the path if you wish:

C:\Program Files (x86)\G DINOS JUNGLE ADVENTURE

Conclusion:

This could have been a much better runner game if the developer had included other keys such as a double jump and a crouch key. This would have given more control over your character and given the game a better chance of surviving beyond a distance of 52, which is the furthest I ever managed to get before deleting the game. Also, the bug that stopped the jump command from being carried out meant I was constantly falling into pits instead of avoiding falling into them. This wasn't just an intermittent bug, but one that was happening virtually every attempt at the game.

Addendum to the review posted late in the day

I don't have the time to rewrite the above review to incorporate the following information, but will say that it does vindicate the game a little: Unfortunately I didn't bother to check to see if there were any videos of game play available on You Tube until seeing the Steam page later in the day. I then saw that you could jump to the top of the scrolling level by pressing the space bar and keeping it depressed. This then allows you to run along the top of the level upside down (and would effectively sort the issue I mentioned about not being able to avoid losing at least one or two lives right from the outset. This new information does add a new dimension to the game and makes it a little more acceptable and challenging; however, the bug with respect to jumping still exists. This could also have been avoided if the game had a proper introduction and options page, or at least a help page detailing the key bindings. There are loads of free running and parkour games that are much better than today's offering that are available free online via your browser for example mini-clip games or Poki.com, I found three withing seconds e.g. Running, Running 2 and a parkour game called Parkour Jump, that were much more fun to play and most had online score abilities for that added competitiveness that some may have. :)
