I've still got 37 steam keys to give away and it's almost 2am. It took me over 7 hours to answer all of the questions posed by the community last night. I started just after 1am and finished just after 8am. By the time I'd finished there was less than an hour to ge before todays competition started and I still had to gather information about today's game, so I never got to bed last night.

To ensure I get to bed tonight what I've decided is that I'm going to removed the unclaimed codes already posted plus the rest of the codes I was going to give away tonight will now be given away next week; however because some community members have already complained about what I'm doing I've decided to take a different approach to giving them away. I'm going to start listing the games when the next game giveaway goes live next week (assuming we have a giveaway).

If you want one or two of the codes you will need to post your wishes in the forums, letting me know what you want, then I will email the code to you (I can find your email either via the comments section, assuming you have commented, or via the admin panel over in the forums. This is in response to complaints made by a couple of community members saying that peoples accounts could get banned if too many community members try to activate the same code. I did try to explain that if you try to activate a game using a code that has already been used, it can result in you being unable to activate any more games for several hours. Which is why I asked the community to inform us when they had activated the games. So far of the 11 games i've posted, only four or five seem to have been taken up. Not only that, the replies are taking away from todays actual giveaway. I had hoped that most community members would use the forums after providing a link to the appropriate thread and some of you have, but not eveyone.

I'll post more erudite and succinct details of my personal giveaways over in the forums before the next giveaway. To ensure the majority of the community have a chance of at least trying for one of the codes, I will start listing the games when the next game giveaway goes live and add a few to the list every hour or so There will be no hoops to jump through apart from letting me know which games you would like. :)

Today's game is limited to 50 Steam codes, so to get one of those codes you will need to jump through a few hoops. If more than 50 community members apply for the game, then there will be a raffle type selection of the winners.

RePete - RePete is a pixel art puzzle platformer about time travel and self-cooperation. You play as Pete, a special guy that can loop back in time to help his past self solve problems, collect gems, and reach new heights. RePete features four worlds, each introducing new gameplay elements, with over 60 challenging levels to test your ability to work with yourself. - £1.59 - VR0PC-HG0QQ-M7BEH

I thought DAMysts idea was a much better option for winning those Steam keys (posted a few hours ago in yesterdays comment section). i.e. that the best reviews of previous games should be rewarded with one of the Steam keys instead of it being the type we are seeing here more and more where you have to post to Facebook, Twitter, join Steam groups etc. Not everyone wants to use social media which basically precludes them from being able to win the games, or giving them much less of a chance, whereas writing a review can be done by everyone. It would give community members who wanted the game an incentive to write reviews for the games we are given, and could then stumulate interest from other developers to give their games away as well.

Each community member can have up to 9 entries via 5 methods. You don't have to select all of the methods, though the more you use, the more likely you are to win a key. The only one I tend to avoid is referring to friends as I don't like to bother friends with such things unless I speak to them aobut it via Team Speak or skype first.

The game usually costs £4.99/$6.99 but is on offer HERE over on Steam at 85% off till the 20th May.

Steam Community Reviews:
You can see some mini reviews of today's game from the Steam community HERE Overall, the game received a mixed reception with slightly more negative than positive reviews. I spnt over 15 minutes looking for videos of game play, but there were so many for Assassins creed Freedom Cry, I gave up looking. you can see a video of game play on the Steam page HERE

Have to add my negative comment. This IS NOT A GIVEAWAY. Sorry, Whiterabbit, know you're stuck in the middle and feel you need to defend the site. But it is not worth defending when it evolves into a lottery. Just my opinion. Very disenchanted with the site lately.

You can edit this letter out if you want. I know I'm just whining but that's how I ( and a LOT OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS) feel now.

...................Moderator Comment........................

Thank you for your feedback Brandon, I agree. As I mentioned to Fran, the site has bled over 50% of it's regular community members since the changes back in February. The games we got from developers such as Playrix and Immanistas Games appears to have stopped, at least since the game giveaway site was upgraded in February. All the giveaway team have done is find other ways to get games. I know it's not the same as before, but we are still getting free games, though not every weekend.

There is so much competition for sites to win regular members, plus games have become so cheap, it's been getting harder and harder to get developers to give away literally thousands of games to sites such as the game giveaway project. Sites like MyPlayCity, Gametop, FreeGamePick and TooMky games pay a lot more to the developers who allow their games to be downloaded for free; plus sites like the Humble bundle and Indie Gala earn each developer who puts games into their bundles decent amounts of money. Each Humble bundle brings in literally millions of dollars and each developer gets a good percentage of that income, whereas they only get a token payment from the game giveaway team. :)

Sorry but if this is the way it is going to be from now on I am not interested. The game does not look at all interesting unless I were 5 to 10 y/o. I don't want to keep; coming back to "Win" a chance on the gamegiveaway. thanks for all the games I have been given in the past. I have been coming here when it was only games given away.

...................Moderator Comment........................

Hi Mia, it's not going to be like this every weekend. Because we are getting fewer developers willing to give us free games, the giveaway team have looked for other ways to get games. This is just one more way. It may not be the best way, and it is unfortunately limited to a small number of licences. We are still getting free games, but just not as many as we have been used to.

Unfortunately the increasingly hostile community is in my opinion driving away developers who may have given us games previously. Seriously, would you be happy giving away tens of thousands of games away to a community that out of a fifth of a million downloads only gives one useful comment back. I certainly wouldn't. i've tried to explain this in various ways to the community, and occassionally some community members respond. In fact there are several community members that have posted some very good comments over the last several months, but considering the community at its heigh had approaching 50 0000 community members downloading for some games; we are now getting more like 2000 downloads and even much less per game. The rank negativity is IMO really destroying this brilliant site

Last weeks game actually had some excellent comments from the community, and the developer responded by answering many of them. This is what we should be seeing every week, but I can only remember seeing that a couple of times over the last 10 years since the site was created. :)

WHY do we have to try and win now
this is no longer a GAME GIVEAWAY
It is a premonition bit unfair don't you think ??
Was bad enough we had to sign into our Facebook but now you can not even get a free game, this is why people use torrents to get there games now !!!!

...................Moderator Comment........................

I'm not sure why we are not getting more traditional game giveaways. since the site changed to the new look, most of the comments have been rather negative and i think it's scared away those developers we have been getting games from for the past several years. Immanitas Games and Playrix were giving us games regualrily for years, at least one of two every month. We've not had one game from them since the change over in February. alawar are still giving us games, but even they appear to have slowed down. The last game we got from them was almost a month ago. We can only rely on the generosity of developers. I've always bekieved that if we give them good feedback about their games be it positive or negative, we would draw in more developers. It could have neen a nexus for developers to give away games to a community who gave the developers useful information that helped them build games that the majority wanted, but sadly this has never happened. On average (already quoted this elsewhere a few times), we are only getting one appropriate comment that gives useful feedback about the game being given away for ever fifth of a million downloads. I really do believe the increasing negativity on this site is pushing away our regularas and stopping new ones from joiniong, but that's just my opinion. I may be totally wrong about it as I do not get any information from the giveaway team, i just look at the statistics, moderate the commetns and ask the community to post appropriate comments. I've been doing so since I became a moderator back in 2008, but my please seem to be ignored by the majority of community members. There are some that do post useful comments, but they are not enough. :)

Long odds to winning a contest, especially when games were available for straight download without excluding most people. Discouraging practice. ;(

...................Moderator Comment........................

They are not really that long Stevie. Last weeks game garnered 2000 plus entries, but each community member had the potential to vote 12 times, making the odds much better, in fact you had a 2 in 5 chance of winning a copy of the game. :)

Yet another fail from GGOTD. And before Whiterabbit, whom I have a lot of respect for, corrects me, two points. First a competition to the finish line is not a Giveaway; it is a competition. A giveaway includes all GGOTD members, a competition does not. Second, it is automatically unfair for those of us who don't do social media. I'm sure that many of us don't do social media, especially "facebook", for common reasons.

...................Moderator Comment........................

Hi Jon, I'm not going to correct you. It's both a competition and a giveaway. Some lucky community members are still getting a game for free (I think of free in the sense that you don't have to pay hard cash for it. you could argue that time is also a payment and indeed it is, but i personally still see those 100 keys that were given to 100 lucky community members as giveaways even though they were won. Lets beg to differ on this. :)

Reply   |   Comment by JonE  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+7)

JonE, it's a failure, not "another fail" like you propose. Also, maybe it's not one. This game doesn't look like it is. Don't get me wrong, I dislike social media too. I miss when all it took was a twitter button to download games/apps, but if a developer is offering, especially on a weekday, it's better than waiting for the weekend, and it's also something.

Now there were about only three publishers offering on the weekends. Maybe they're bigger and want more, or don't need us. They are good publishers. I actually simply buy games from Alawar and Playrix just on the track they offer em for free here on occasion, or if there is a decent sale of their releases on steam. I think that was part of the objective they were going for.

If you want to really object and still play the game and not jump through the hoops to become the winning one out of 50, you could just get the game on steam while it's still 1.06, you could do that. There's only about 12 hours though.

It looks like this dev simply wants to get a little exposure and advertisement an maybe some feedback. There are only 11 reviews on the site and it's mixed. Just to support the developer for taking the attempt to bring it here I'll grab some copies myself, one for me one for a friend or something. RPGs are not really my cup of tea honestly but I might play it some time. If it's easy to pick up and doesn't require a ton of grinding and the story is okay enough, I'd probably be into it. Bring a random Visual Novel over here or a Match3 that's also a dating sim at the same time (why aren't there more of those?) and I'll be asking for votes myself. But also, without this giveaway, if I was on steam and saw a game that was under 2 bucks it would be on my alert list as is, so I would consider it at that.

The only other issue with the post I have JonE is whether or not the game looks interesting to you. Would you want it even if it's freely free? It's questions like that which are what the developer(s) is(are) probably going for.

Uhh, skip me over for a key, I'll just grab it while it's on sale. Thank you.

Jarkydrapedoor, O.K. I'll take back the FAIL part; I get that, but I still say a Competition is not a Giveaway, although I understand that the people who win the game get it for free. But, the people who can't compete don't get anything.

But, I also have to agree that I get most of my games from Alawar and Playrix. I tried Steam long ago, but maybe I'll give it another try.

Thanks for the comments from both Whiterabbit and Jarkydrapedoor.

...................Moderator Comment........................

Thank you for your feedback Jon, I wasn't impressed when I first had to install Steam. Back then I avoided game clients like the plague. I also purchased most of my games, (mainly AAA) in disk form rather than digitally. I did start to purchase digital games when I had my accident back in 2005, but hthatwas basically becasue I was house bound. anyway, I ended up buying two digital games that at the time I didn't realize required Steam for me to be able to play them. I was really annoyed at myself for not reading the fine print, but hey, within weeks I soon changed my opinion of Steam (with it's many facets geared towards gamers and the gaming community), and now I swear by it.

There are loads of free games available once you have the client installed and I'm not talking about the Free to Play/pay to win type games. There are plenty of free single player games as well as lots of free to play with single player options. You'll find Steam groups that list all of the free games available. I seem to remember counting well over a hundred with over 200 if you count the free to play with SP options a few months ago. . :)

Ok GOTD officially on my "this is a shill site". Hawking & trolling for user info via Steam is a new low for this site that used to be giveaway. Guess new definition for that phrase. Will wait for the truly free games.
At least this is a kiddie game w/ a neg rating at Steam so no big loss. fwiw I learned to never bother with any Steam game that is less than a green positive rating - not that all those are great but it does thin the herd.
The mixed is maybe 85-90% poor whereas negative is nearly 100% avoid.

If anyone is not used to Steam or does not want to take the chance to win a key, I suggest taking a weekend or some free time, researching how to get legit keys for free and play around with Steam for awhile to see how it's like. Once you install a Steam game, it is tied to your Steam account permanently but some may not like it's always online requirement for some games. Whiterabbit does an excellent job of posting special offers and freebies from other places so keep your eyes peeled for it. For those that are looking for a game each week and feel dissapointed there is not one to download, it's worth the time , research and effort to find alternatives on the weekend when there is a contest like this or one is simply not available.

So another Join to Win game and this time one that currently only costs $1.04! Anyway, besides the mixed reviews on STEAM, you can find a detailed review at RPGFan: www.rpgfan.com/reviews/Freedom_Cry/index.html

I am a fan of many Aldorlea games that got good scores from RPGFan (Millennium 89%, 3 Stars of Destiny 87%, Assguard 87%, etc.). The same reviewer gave Freedom Cry a score of 51%. His final paragraph begins with, "At the end of the day, Freedom Cry is a terrible game."

The game give away today is currently on sale on Steam for £0.74 but has mixed reviews, some amusing reads, if it's your sort of thing you may well enjoy it. If you already have a Steam account, Indie Gala released a very good bundle yesterday which is excellent value for money, the majority of the games having received very positive reviews. I confess I bought it for A Boy and his Blob but am very happy with the other games.

Super Gnome,

Looking at last weeks entries, assuming all those that did enter used all of their entires (which potentially number up to 12 tries), the chances of you winning a Steam code was actually quite good. That is a 2 in 5 chance, which means for ever 5 community members 2 won a key. How is that losing?

sue,

That is strange, I have only commented one other time and there was nothing nasty in my post. Apparently I offended you or your friend, which was not my intention. I simply asked if Super Gnome was attempting to be ironic? As he or she said, "Maybe it's better - that you're going again to school to learn an better english language..". I thought the humor in that comment was self-evident. I admire anyone that takes the time to learn another language and I would not have brought it up, except that Super Gnome appeared to be insulting Daniel regarding his command of the English language. You appear to be trolling, so I will ignore any further comments.

...................Moderator Comment........................

Thank you for your explanation Cliff. Unfortunately not everyone will see it that way, and it's one of the reasons i asked the community about deleting certain comments, but there was such a mixed response to that suggestion I am still undecided as to what I should do. I can see both sides of the argument which makes it very difficult for me to decide. :)

My sincere apologies. It was not my desire to bully or insult anyone. I greatly appreciate all that GOTD has given the community. I am certain it is no small task. I am irritated to see negative comments from the very few that seem unappreciative. It was not my intention to contribute to that rancour. Please delete my comments.
