Why do you think it's boring???

I enjoyed playing this game.
It would be nice if the attack radius was shown during placement.
I didn't even notice the spelling and grammar mistakes. I guess I concentrated on playing the game.

Is it just me or did the game contain numerous sentence composition errors and or grammar issues?

I think I should start by saying I've always been awful at TD games. lol
Anyway, I actually really like the graphics, even though a sort of retro look might put others off.
Gameplay seems okay, although the enemies either seemed to be extremely easy to destroy or far too difficult. By the third level, I lost after barely being able to put a dent in some of the enemies that spawned near the end. Also, the towers that generate money seem nearly pointless. It seems they generate money way too slowly to be worth purchasing. That's unfortunate, as the choices in this game are already very limited.
I haven't tried Survival yet, so my comments are directed towards the main mode.
One last thing that's very noticeable is the game's grammar. Personally, I'm not bothered by poor grammar in games, especially if English isn't the developer's first language. However, it can give the feeling of an unpolished game and will definitely cause the game to be overlooked by some people.
Overall, Fortside is a decent game. It's okay for such a low price, but it would need some work if the developer wanted to turn it into a larger, more expensive game.
Thanks GGAOTD and Wheemplay for the free game!

Thank you for your feedback.
You are sort of right about the mining tower, however, it can also be used as an attack tower when enemies are nearby. so although it may not seem like it's worth purchasing, it does have a double effect. Money is added to the bank although slowly. Also when you get to level 3 and above try upgrading your rocket towers. According to one community member that will help you get through what I found to be an almost impossible task. I tried completing level 3 several times without thinking to upgrade (partly because the TD games I usually play like Defence Grid: The Awakening don't require upgrades until well into the 10th or later waves of enemy). When I'd read the members post I did exactly what he advised and finally got through to level 4 (Yeahhhh!)
Promytius has posted a thread about grammar and spelling in the giveaway forums. If you feel strongly enough about the issue, please do leave some feedback there.

Dear Wrascally Wabbit,
I am sorry I didn't post yesterday. I downloaded and installed the game and didn't even have time to play it. I am not much into TM games for the same reasons you gave. They make me frazzled.
Went to a play with family yesterday and when we got out at 11pm and we turned our phones on, they ALL went nuts with messages. A family member had died.
So today I did the same thing..Got the game and that's it. I am tired..going to bed.
If I get a chance, I will address the "English Topic" tomorrow.

downloaded it, played it, already beat the game felt more like a demo more than a full game because of the 15 levels, flashy level select really not needed
most games offer 120 levels most of the time they reuse levels just backward or in a different order
the money generators cost 3000 waiting for them to pay back killed me off few times.
1500 for standard launcher that upgrades to nukes pays off more b4 all the waves are over
overall i give it a ok
could make upgrades into perks activation after so long or lasts for 30 seconds with a cool down timer
money generator replaced with a 2x bot kills for 3seconds
there is alot of minor changes that could bump price up some

AHHH! "What is the written word anyway , it’s just a vessel for transporting and saving ideas. Unless the spelling error or bad grammar changes the whole context and meaning of the information it shouldn’t matter about the errors."
That cuts me to my bones!
How about the written word is my life? OK? The tradition in, oh I don't know, like in the entire World, is to communicate accurately, which includes spelling and grammar. Spelling and grammar errors DO change entire meanings and have far-reaching consequences for sales, which is why I responded, hoping that the author will consider a proofreader - not me, I'm fine - but someone!
Words are all we have, my friend. Peace.
.......................Moderator Comment............
Yes as I said if the spelling or grammar changes the context, then it matters, but if it doesn't (as sometimes it doesn't) then the idea is still communicated and shouldn't matter. As for the statement 'words are all we have', I beg to differ, we have visual art, (the world is a beautiful place) and picures can tell also tell a story. Ideas can also be expressed in pictograms not just words. You can also talk without using words; computers for example use numbers to talk and deaf and blind peple use several methods that either use visual aids or touch . Peace to you as well. :) This would make an interesting discussion in the forums. :)

These tower defence games are so addictive. The music repetitiveness isn't an issue for me as I'm too busy concentrating on blasting the enemy :) The graphics are quite good, admittedly I've only played a few so I don't know how good/bad it compares to the majority of TD games. Overall my Sunday will disappear into this game :) Cheers.

Check out The Defense Grid: The awakening. It's available as a demo via Steam. You will need to download the Steam client first though. It's a brilliant TD game. You can download it via the following adress.

Also check out Anomaly: Warzone Earth another fabulous TD game that's also available via Steam as a demo:

Another more simpler game called Revenge of the titans which was included in the second humble Bundle. You could pay anything you wanted for that and four other ecxcellent indie games, but I'm not sure whether the bundle is still available on offer. The game has a retro feel to it, but has some very innovative ideas and is a superb TD game. That is also vailable via Steam. You can check the game discussion forums for details of the humble bundle. It was part of the second one.

Initial thoughts are I'd like more options, like the ability to adjust the sound not just toggle it. I'd also like to see the radius of the tower highlighted when I go to place it. The large maps are nice, but I'd like some way to zoom out to see more.
Thanks GOTD

Haven't downloaded this game yet but I feel the need to comment on spelling and "Engrish". I do notice the spelling and grammar. It does not take away from the gameplay and it can sometimes be very entertaining, but I always think that the developers somehow skimped on their game and it could of been better. (If they do not have the pride in their game to hire a translator or English writer, did they really care about the game itself or is this just a throwaway). I have beta tested games, and noted and reported spelling errors and been very disappointed when same errors show up in released product.

#4: "Why does this game use Flash Player? Did they know that Flash Player will slow down the computer pretty bad?"
Purely FWIW, Flash has it's pros & cons... Flash-based games can make your PC's/laptop's CPU work quite a bit -- my understanding [what I was told anyway] is that the code loops full throttle, going as fast as your CPU will allow, as opposed to say loading this page in my web browser, where once that's done my PC's CPU takes a rest. The more a CPU works the more heat that's produced, & if it gets hot enough performance can suffer -- add that potential effect to few if any extra resources [the game's hogging everything it can] and things can slow down.
OTOH, maybe counter intuitively, Flash-based games [like Flash itself] are usually more-or-less hardware independent. You don't need the latest/greatest hardware in a nutshell. IN fact, my wife's played many of the same Flash-based games for years, through a few hardware upgrades that have overall more than doubled her PC's performance -- for the most part those games play just the same as they always did.
If/when hogging the CPU is a problem, e.g. you want to throttle it down a bit so things inside the case don't get so hot, &/or you're concerned about battery life [high CPU usage will consume more electricity], &/or you want your system to be doing something else in the background, consider trying to run Flash-based games inside a VM [Virtual Machine]. You allot how much total memory it can have, along with how many CPU cores [if you have a multi-core CPU], leaving plenty for whatever else you want.
I like Virtual Box because it's free, there's a portable version, it's multi-platform, & it has [experimental] D3D support. And/or most all versions of win7 can run Windows Virtual PC -- the XP VM is limited to a couple of versions, but the VM host itself is pretty much available to all. Using Windows VPC in 7 you can pretty easily set up software to run in a VM just as if it's running in win7 itself [it's just a matter of checking a box], with things like Start Menu shortcuts you can use -- you don't have to 1st start up the VM manually or anything. If you want to try using a VM like this you'll need a copy of Windows -- it has to be licensed/activated like a regular PC -- so if you don't have an older version you're not using after an upgrade, I suggest checking out [i.e. Google/Bing] Windows 7 Trial. [QUIK Tip: Install the same version of 7 for a trial that you might license later on, & that way you won't have to reinstall -- you just type in your newly purchased key.]

Are you saying that you wouldn't purchase a game simply because of spelling errors? Each to their own. I can only speak for myself. I'm sure there ARE those who would not purchase a game because of spelling errors, but I'm also sure the majority of 'GAMERS' would not bother about spelling and grammar errors if the actual game play was GOOD; but hey, lets leave this argument for the forums. Comments about today's game are the order of the day here.
BTW, why are you always changing your name?

After struggling with level 3 and 4 for a little while I found that upgraded missile towers mostly at the start of the path were all I needed, and I breezed through the rest of the levels. Income towers are useless as they only return on the investment late in the round, and gun turrets are useless as they do all too little damage.
The game desperately needs a way to place multiple towers of the same type, such as shift-click which is common in the genre. Playing on a touchpad, I got annoyed with having to travel back and forth to buy lots of towers.
A way to make the towers target another unit than the front runner would be welcome - with instant building and income given per unit killed, it is usually more beneficial to focus fire on one enemy to kill and build more towers further along the path using the money gained, rather than shooting every unit up evenly and not killing.
Selling towers at twice the original cost is ridiculous. Additionally, when selling you have to be lucky for the popup to stay up until you can point to the sell button, many times it disappears immediately. A keystroke (such as S) for selling a tower would be a lot better than a popup in the first place.
So to sum up, the controls are clunky, and the game has little variety, few options for the player to pursue and no replay value. For people who like this sort of game, there are many better titles out there. My favourites include the GemCraft and Protector series, both available free online on sites like Kongregate, and Immortal Defense which has been given away here earlier.
Finally a comment not aimed at this game, but rather the site. I have missed very many giveaways because the RSS feed is only updated *after* the giveaway period is over. It would be much better if the RSS was rather updated shortly after making a new title available.

To Jennifer - as an English-speaking proofreader and editor, I have a different take on language. English is my native language and I edit for non-English speaking companies, and it is critical in marketing, selling, presenting, proposing or producing anything - anything - to understand that correct and proper language is essential to the success of the project. Any deviation from correct grammar will negatively impact on the decision to purchase or not. Products can fail on grammar alone. Proofreading is not expensive and developers should always consider the critical nature of correct language. So I won't be taking this game. Developers - find someone who will correct your English, it will make all the difference - it can't make a bad game good, but it may get a good game the notice it needs to succeed.

I have to disagree with you on what you say Promytius; at least from my own perspective anyway. For me, the game play and to a lesser extent the graphics are the most important things that grab me when buying a game; any spelling or grammar errors in the menus and dialogue boxes are just incidental. So long as the idea is put over correctly, then that's good enough for me. What is the written word anyway , it's just a vessel for transporting and saving ideas. Unless the spelling error or bad grammar changes the whole context and meaning of the information it shouldn't matter about the errors.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Whiterabbit. But I must say that you are doing a great job at reviewing games! I'm sure there would be some employers willing to hire game reviewers, after seeing the hard work you put in each review here.
---
The music in the game is quite repetitive, but pretty good regardless. Gives it a slight Advance Wars (great series!) feel. The sounds are quite good too, for when the towers attack.
You can definitely see that the grammatical errors need some fixing to make this game a bit more credible. My grammar isn't superb, but the mistakes made in the game are noticeable. I very much value games that have been written well over poorly written ones. The addition of a story to this game could make it more interesting, as most defence tower games don't have one.
The pixel art is magnificent! It's a very good looking game. Kudos to the artist.
I would very much appreciate it if there were some kind of book within the game which hinted at weaknesses in enemies and told some miscellaneous information about them. And something to collect, like little statues of the enemies and other pixel art within the game for the score you get after each level? Or achievements? I wouldn't be able to stop playing. xD
I thought it suddenly got kind of hard on level 2 already, when there was one enemy I could hardly even destroy.
The game wasn't slow in my computer, but ran very well. The price is very good for a game of this kind. Definitely a game I'll be keeping.

...........................Moderator Comment.........................
Basically you place towers that can be picked up from the bottom of the screen and place then at strategic points on the map. As for english. Many of the games given away here are from non non English speaking developers. To pay for someone to correct their English is just taking away from the development costs of the game itself and in my opinion is very low on the list of priorities when creating a game. I found the English easy to understand. The game is fairly easy to pick up withput any instructions. just by clicking the various buttons you should be able to work out how the game is played.

Positives:
- Graphics were nice as was the interface
- There was an indication of which way the creeps spawn from (green=spawn while red=end)
- The tower that has 2 functions: gold and attack though it didn't seem to be worth upgrading as the level usually ends before you have enough to upgrade them
- Nice sized maps with ability to scroll around map
Negatives:
- Spelling and grammar mistakes on the first level tutorial screen and others riddled throughout the game
- The bosses seem broken in the game. I had 10 towers placed near corners etc and I spend all my money on towers, yet it didn't even get any of the four bosses that spawned to half their HP
- Personally, I would like to see more variety of towers to choose from.
- No difficulty setting?
- Survival mode seemed a bit difficult
I think this needs to be polished and refined a bit but I feel as though it doesn't cut it when compared to how tower defence games have evolved over the years and having played many of them since Flash Element TD (first flash TD I believe). Aside from having the tower with 2 functions, this game doesn't stand out for me. Just my thoughts.

I've posted images, but at the moment there seems to be a problem with the provider. you can see all of the images I’ve posted below, plus more via the link which can be found under images.
Fortside:Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average between 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of potential cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away more decent games.
Please leave some feedback once you’ve checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain why your reasons for the feedback you post. Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to post a constructive comment. Thank you.
Installation:
Fortside downloads to a 7.45MB zip file that unpacks to a read me and a wrapped dual setup and activation module. The game installs to C:\Games\Fortside. As with all Wheemplay games, the executable installs directly to the games folder with no folder of its own; the file size is 6.98MB when installed. You can create a folder for the game during the installation wizard, and if you wish change the installation path. There’s no shortcut installed to either the desktop or the Start menu/Programs list, and to uninstall the game just delete it. There is no uninstaller provided.

The Game:
This is another Tower Defence (TD) game from Wheemplay (the last one we got was called Village Defence a few weeks ago). The main difference between the two is that Fortside has more advance graphics, though Fortside is still rather retro compared to the latest games that are being released in this genre for example, check out Defence Grid:The Awakening and Anomaly: Warzone Earth; (but then, this game only costs $0.99 when it’s not being given away for free. See the end of the review for details of free and commercial TD games that are worth downloading or purchasing).
As with most TD games you get a number of defensive structures to build. Fortside provides you with only three towers that includes a machine gun tower that has a high rate of fire, but with only a small amount of damage; there’s also a rocket armed tower that has a low rate of fire, but a much greater level of damage as well as a greater attack radius (upgrade this first if you want to survive later levels) and finally a mining tower that creates money which can then be spent on new towers or upgrades. The mining tower can also be used as an attack weapon. You just have to click on it and select battle mode. When no enemy are nearby you can then switch it back to supply mode so as to maximise your earning potential. (Most quality TD games have many more towers with a whole range of weird and wonderful weapons).
The game starts with a simple tutorial which you can choose to skip if you wish. The main objective of the game is to build towers that will attack and destroy enemies. The aim of the game (as most gamers will know) is to stop the enemy from getting to your home base, which in Fortside is denoted by a red marker. Although the basic premise of the game is very simple, you do need to employ some strategy if you are to stop the enemy from being successful. It’s important to place your towers at strategic places along the route the enemy will take so that they can do the maximum amount of damage possible, for example when a road turns or loops back on itself the placement of a tower nearby will effectively double the amount of time an enemy is exposed to the defensive fire from the tower. (More advanced TD games like Defense Grid: The Awakening, have multiple routes that the enemy can take, which makes for a much more challenging game).
The more enemies you destroy, the more money you will earn, this can be supplemented with cash earned from the mining tower. Earned cash should immediately be spent on new defensive structures to protect your home base. All purchase buttons are greyed out when you don't have enough cash. as soon as you earn enough cash, the buttons are unlocked. When purchasing towers you have four factors to consider:
1)…The Cost: How many can you buy with the available cash you have and is it worth investing in a more expensive structure? You have to weigh up the number of towers you already have (that is, is your road adequately defended with the structures you already have, or do you need to buy more cheap ones before investing in the better ones?)
2)…Fire Rate: You want a tower that fires as fast as possible. It’s no good purchasing a powerful tower at the beginning of a game if it only fires every few seconds because the beginning of the game is an important stage in developing your initial defences.
3)…Damage Potential: You want a tower that does as much damage as possible, but at the beginning of the game you’ll find the cheapest towers are more useful despite having a lower damage potential. Remember, lots of cheap towers with low damage potential can be as good as a single more expensive tower with better damage potential.
4)…Defensive Radius: The greater the defensive radius, the further apart you can place your initial defences, thus covering more of your map. Unfortunately, the towers with the best defensive radii are the most expensive. Always overlap your towers defensive radii with other towers to ensure all ground between the towers is covered. You can place towers near to each other if you wish as this gives you double the fire rate (or more if more Towers are places together).
It’s no use investing in the best towers, especially at the beginning of the game if you are only going to be able to defend a small section of the map. At the start of a level it’s usually accepted that you think small and purchase as many of the cheapest towers so that you can cover the best strategic areas of the route the enemy will follow. (Of course, that’s my strategy, a different one may suit your type of game play; that said, you can’t go wrong with the strategy I employ in the early stages of a level).
Once you’ve laid down a decent defensive barrier, you can then start to think about buying the more expensive towers and even upgrading the towers you’ve already placed. This game appears to have several levels of upgrade for each of the three towers that you get. It’s important to use these upgrades (usually) from the middle game so as to ensure you are adequately protected when the end of level boss arrives. These bosses are usually very difficult to destroy, so you need to maximise every towers potential if you are to survive the game. Once a boss has passed the towers placed near the start of the route, you can sell them to pay for more towers further down the route. This maximises the resources you have and can sometimes be the only way of beating a level
There are three pads along the bottom of the playing area. The first one allows you to choose which tower you want to build. You can see the essential information that I mentioned above (Fire Rate, Damage and Defensive Radius) next to each of the towers. The second pad shows you the upgrades that you can make to each tower. Each tower has three upgrades, effectively giving you nine different towers. When you purchase an upgrade all th towers of that type will be upgraded. The final pad has three indicators and a time controller. You can speed up the games progress if you don’t like waiting around for the enemy to travel along the winding routes; be sure that your defences are adequate if you do this though. The indicators your money indicator, the second indicator is unusual in that it indicates how many enemies are allowed through before your base is destroyed, and the final indicator tells you when a n enemy wave is on the field of battle and when a new wave is coming.
To see the whole battle area you may need to move the screen by moving your mouse to the edge of the screen where the red arrows are or used the keyboard cursor keys. The game starts in windowed mode. To go to full screen click on the maximise button to the top right-hand portion of the window. You can also minimise the game if you wish. If you find the music annoying you can toggle it off via the speaker button that’s situated near the minimize/maximize button. Just below where it says more defensive games you can pause or restart your game if you wish.

Conclusion:
This is definitely a better TD game than the previous Wheemplay game (Village Defence, but it's still lacking in something to give it that 'this is worth keeping' feeling. There are too few tower defence types, the music is maddeningly repetitive and there are only 15 levels to the game. for its price of less than a dollar that is acceptable, but it really does feel like an unfinished game to me. someone mentioned in the comments below that you can get better freeware TD games, which is true. I've posted some details below for online and downloadable versions of Tower Defence games. for the graphics I give 5, music 3 and game play 6 making a total of 4.67.

There's a dizzying array of games, but each one is labelled with the genre it belongs to, so you should easily find the Tower Defence games
There's a new tower defence game called Sanctum (not free) that's different to your usual top down TD games. In it you play in the First Person. It's available from Steam:
HERE, with 10% off at the moment. Other TD games I highly recommend are Defence Grid: The Awakening available HERE and Anomaly: Warzone Earth which is a 'reverse' Tower Defence game; you can find details of it HERE.
