Fighter of Evil
In Brief
Fighter of Evil is an action platformer that was given away several weeks ago (25th Feb) HERE.
FofE-001
Installation Issues:
Fighter of Evil downloads to a 43 MB zip file that unzips to two files, (the setup executable and a read me). The game installs to the following path by default, but can be changed if you wish. The installed game is 43.2 MB in size.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Fighter Of Evil
Four shortcuts are installed to the desktop; the Play Online Games, MyPlayCity Games and shortcuts to a free online game; the name of which may vary each week can be deleted once the game has been installed. The Themida wrapper may alert your security and even block the installation. There are details in the read me about this issue.

The Game:
Fighter of Evil is an action game that takes place in the near future. A hotel placed an emergency call to a group of fighters that dispel spirits. Unfortunately staff and clients have been taken hostage.
FofE-003
Your job should you choose to actually play it after this review is to go through the hotel, and free the captured people and dispel the spirits. This game features 30 levels and a whopping 3+ weapons! Thankfully, the poor dialogue is kept to a minimum (which is actually considered a feature on the Steam page)
Starting the game right off the bat I ran into problems, there are no options and I was unable to get the game to go into full screen mode. The build I have is a beta build, so hopefully this will be addressed. I didn’t care for the sound or music, unfortunately there’s no easy way to mute the sound or music, since there’s ZERO options, so I had to actually mute it through the Windows 10 mixer board. Another fault in this game is that it has zero game pad support. Strictly mouse and keyboard with no ability to configure for individual tastes.
Starting off you get a HORRENDOUS pixillated comic book picture that does nothing but instill fear in you…. fear that this is going to be a rubbish game. Yeah, that’s a real treat isn’t it? The funny thing is there’s no real reason for the character to even be kicking in the door, it’s a hotel open for business.
FofE-004
So after you get through the horrendous comic book, you are dumped in a room with a lovely woman who tells you what is going on, in the most possibly broken English ever. I’m not picky when it comes to games, bad graphics won’t scare me off since I’ve been gaming since Atari, but one thing that does is broken English in a game, and this game so far is FULL of it.
Once you get past Granny and her babushka, you will be put into a room with spikes and a person tied to a post. (What kind of hotel has spikes on their floor?) Once you navigate the spikes and get over to the person, you’ll be tasked with pushing the E button, once you do so the tied up person turns into a ghost or melts, or something? I’m not even sure, at this point does it even matter?Immediately after entering the next room I walked on a mine and exploded due to me not being able to see it because of the small size of the screen. Ugh. As I prepared to walk past the fireplace with some nice Christmas lights (or Festivus) and presents, I exploded for no reason. I finally figured out that I exploded due to one of the Christmas/Festivus presents coming to life and touching me. That’s right, the “League of Evil Spirits Fighters” or whatever they would call themselves managed to hire someone who dies upon contact of a wrapped cardboard parcel.
FofE-005
After misjudging the pinpoint accurate death trap of a mine and spike trap, I then realized I had lost all my lives, and had to start the level over.. I found a room with a machine gun firing by itself, that can shoot you and you can survive, but touch a bouncing Christmas present and you’re dead. This game is horrendous, and if I had paid even $0.25 for it I would have asked for a refund. Stay away, far away.

Conclusion:
I can't believe I actully paid almost £2 for this when it was released almost 2 years ago. I found the lack of any key remapping destroyed this game for me a sI couldn't play the game properly with the set controls. I'm left handed and prefer the arrow keys for movement. If I was able to change the key mapping, I think I could enjoy this game, but I doubt the developer will ever update the game to include that. I bought this because I do like retro games and from the video and screen captures it looked like a well made game. Don't get me wrong, some effort has gone into this, but it feels unfinished and is unforgiving. The pass-worded levels are also a throwback to years gone by. Who keeps a record of level codes these days? That and the fact that there are only three levels to this game (though each level does have multiple rooms to explore), it hardly seems worth the effort to code in a password system.

After you've had an opportunity to play today's giveaway please take a few moments to give some positive or negative feedback; for example, what you liked or disliked about the game, or how it could be improved. If you don't like the genre at all, please explain why and if any, what improvements would change your mind? If you don't have time to post a comment today, please do so at your convenience, thank you. Problems getting the game to work:
If you're having problems installing or activating or getting Fighters of Evil to work please visit the FAQ's Thread HERE and read through the communities comments because sometimes fixes have already been posted, for example, a common issue seen since the Themida wrapper was introduced three years ago is that some community members installation of the game are blocked by their security because Themida code has been known to hide malware, (usually an error message is flagged for example 'The executable is corrupted' even though in reality it is not); so as a precaution some anti malware programs will block and even delete the suspect installation files even though the files (i.e. the setup, read me and setup.gcd files are actually totally free from malware. This issue can be solved either by rebooting your computer in safe mode with networking or a quicker method is to temporarily turn off your security software to allow the installation. You could also try white-listing the setup.gcd file. In the almost 12 years this game giveaway site has been operating there has 'never' been a game given away that was infected with malware.
If for any reason you want to contact the giveaway team, for example, you have a game to offer the community, or are unable to download the latest game or other issues that the FAQ's thread or these comments don't cover or solve you can do so HERE
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the developer SharkGame and the distributor Falcoware Games for giving away Fighters of Evil again, and also to the game giveaway team, as always, for securing other ways to get free games.

The rest of the information that used to be posted in the game review can be found in the forums HERE. Finally, check out Delenns threads for details of other free games and offers; she often updates with the latest deals from Indie Gala, the Humble Store and others HERE; plus other community members sometimes post details of free games elsewhere in the game discussion forums HERE, (current deals are usually on the first page of the game discussion forums).

Finally, there are some excellent bargains on sale via Steam HERE, for example, if you previously purchased the game Sniper Elite 2 on Steam, there is a decent discount on the new remastered version of the game HERE. The developer is re-releasing the award winning game with additional content and all the original dlc is included with the game as well. It will be released on Steam mid May. Owners of the original game will get over 75% off the usual price. i.e. £6.99 instead of £29.99. (If you don't own the original, it's no longer available via Steam, but you may find cheap steam keys on various stores that deal in steam keys. Pre ordering the remastered version will give you 10% off the usual price i.e. £26.99 instead of £29.99 After watching videos of the remastered version and comparing it to the original, it looks amazing. .

LadyLei,

:) Hi LadyLei :)
p.s. my mother loved Bob Dylans Lay Lady Lay. I know your spelling is different, but when I see your name it always reminds me of my mother listening to Lay Lady Lay. (even brings tears to my eyes as she passed back in the mid 90's) :)

Most of the free and discounted game deals I mention in the last paragraph below end today or soon; for example, Ionball 2: Ionstorm and Welcome to Princeland both end later today, and many of the games on sale via Steam end today, though new titles will be added to their weekly sales.
