I like these time mgmt games - enjoyed the original Farm Frenzy - but twice now this one has locked up on me. I am running WinXP with Avast Antivirus. I believe, in both cases, it happened when I go to redo a level. I hear a ding, and I can still move my mouse, but otherwise it is locked up. Ctl-Alt-Del doesn't work, Windows key doesn't work, nothing works. I end up having to do a reboot. On the last reboot I ended up having to do a chkdsk /f to fix some errors that seem to have occurred as a result. So I immediately removed the game. Too bad - I was just getting into it.

I was quite surprised that only 3162 community members have downloaded this game. It's one of Alawars better Time Management games, with two modes, and unusually for TM games, not as stressful. even I like the game, and I rarely enjoy TM games. I hate TM games. However, this is supposed to be a good one; so I got it. Have yet to play it. And it's all Gizmo's/Ian Richard's fault. I have been playing this game all day...The Puzzle of 2048 I can't win it. Driving me nuts. The highest tile I have gotten is "512".

I owned this game a few years ago and found some levels quite challenging. I'm looking forward to trying it again. If I remember rightly there were two levels where getting a gold medal was just impossible. It's a game you can play during short breaks and replay whenever necessary. Thanks for both offerings this weekend!

That grey/white stripy thing [cat?] needs some *serious* exercise. Actually, the cows could do with fewer antibiotics, less feed and a treadmill, too.

Slightly less than serious note: farm cats are for killing rodents, they are supposed to be lean, hungry and fit. Not cute and cuddly.
I suppose all this is my way of suggesting that the graphics are a little iffy.

I own the whole series, up to about two years ago, and I agree with Whiterabbit's comment that FF2 is a great improvement over an already addictive game, and later releases merely change clothes without adding new twists.

It's hard to get gold on every level of Frenzy 2, but not impossible - strategy and perfect timing is essential. Once through all levels, we can replay any level by itself - a real plus for me.

Double click on setup.exe and it asks if I want to allow it, click yes, then it just goes off, does not install - what am I doing wrong?

If you live in the Uk you can download it free from the BBC's Dr Who site. As it was partly funded by licence payers, it was decided to give it to UK citizens, but elsewhere you have to pay; tohugh there are ways to get it, but I won't say. :) It was on sale last week. Check the seam specials section as it may stll be on sale. Can't remember.

p.s. the new series started this week. i was impressed with the new Dr who; I think he's going top be fabulous. much better than Matt Smith, tohugh will reserve judgment when comparing to Tom Baker and David Tennant, my favorite ones. :)

I'm not a big fan of time management, but I do like the Farm Frenzy franchise. It is a nice way to spend some time, on a rainy day. Glad to add this one to my collection. :-)

The Game:

Even if you haven’t played the original, which isn’t too different than this sequel, Farm Frenzy 2 is fairly easy to pick up, but a word of warning – it gets pretty darn tough a few levels in. You’re in control of a farm and your goal is to meet each day’s goals, which might be to make a specific amount of money or raise a certain number of animals.

An example of a typical scenario is as follows: you’ll drop grass down on the ground for your two or three chickens to feed (do chickens eat grass?). If you run out of water you have to pay to use the well and if you don’t replenish the food your chickens will die. Chickens lay eggs, which you click on and goes in your storage area. Depending on your goal, you might spend some money on building, say, a powdered egg shed, which turns your eggs into something you can sell at the market or used to make other items.

In order to keep the cash coming in you’ll send a truck or plane (which both curiously travel at the same speed) to the city to see your goods and you’ll have to wait for them to return before spending the money. As with most economic simulations you can select which items you want to sell at the supermarket and how many items to sell.

Annoying predators like bears that arrive on the farm and whack your chickens away need to be trapped (and if you like, sold for cash); you can trap them by quickly clicking on them before they can do any serious harm.

Oh, did we mention there’s also a clock for each level? Yes, in order to earn bonus points you’ll have to complete all of your tasks by a certain time, such as 2:00 minutes or less. Also adding to the difficulty is your limited storage space, therefore you’ll need to sell items to make room (problem is, vehicles can only carry a few things at once).

Eventually you’ll unlock access to more items to sell (such as meat and deserts), better buildings (each of which have three upgrades to make them faster or process more food at the same time) and friends on the farm, such as dogs, who keep the bears away.

The game offers more items than its predecessor, now totalling five products to buy in the city, four animals, four types of bears, 12 buildings and 16 products to produce. If it’s not incentive enough to access all of this material, players can also earn nearly 20 awards, for completing levels in a certain amount of time or playing 10 consecutive levels without losing an animal or other accomplishments (all of which are accessible from the main screen).

Finish half of the main game to unlock a second Unlimited mode, which challenges you to see how well you can work the farm without the daily objectives.

While the one song is enough to drive you batty after a short while, the graphics are a delight. From the 3-D animals to the animation of the buildings churning out produce to the vehicles that drive to the big city. Farm Frenzy 2 does a bang up job in the visual department.

However, gamers might not like the relatively high difficulty level of this game, when things get quite chaotic on your farm and you’re expected to madly click to pick up eggs, protect chickens and send vehicles to the city – all at the same time. What compounds this problem is the lack of a Hint button, which could’ve in handy when you don’t know what to do next (there is a general Help screen, though).

But when it comes to game-play and presentation, Farm Frenzy 2 is a blast and will certainly give you a newfound appreciation for Old MacDonald.

General tips:

1) .... You can replay a level at any time if you need more coins or if you just want to obtain a higher score.

2) .... At the beginning of some levels you will be asked to go into the shop and buy the item that the arrow is pointing to. If you can’t afford to buy it you will not be able to start that level until you have enough stars.

3) .... At that point you will have to replay some other levels in order to earn some more gold and stars. As soon as you’ve earned enough, go back to the shop, buy the needed upgrade and open the level that you need.

4) .... When you look at the map, you’ll see that the icons for the levels have different colors. The ones that are lit in blue and are blank are the ones that you can play. The ones that are empty and gray inside mean that you need to purchase an upgrade in order to play it.

5) .... When you see an icon with a gold icon with a duck it means that you hit the gold target for that day. If the icon with the duck is gray then it means that you hit the silver target for that day. If the icon that has a duck is blue, it means that you simply passed the level.

6) .... You need to pick up goods as soon as they are ready, if you don’t they will disappear and you will not earn any coins for products lost. As soon as you see some products flashing it means that you have very few seconds to pick it up.

7) .... The animals need grass to eat and produce goods for you to take into town and sell. Whenever the farm is low on grass make sure to irrigate the soil.

8 ) .... You should really make sure that your well is full at all times. You don’t want to waste time by waiting for it to fill. As soon as the well runs dry, buy some more water so it can be ready for the next round. Max out the well upgrade so you can get more water in one sitting.

9) .... The blue bars under the animals show you how full and content they are. When the animals run out of food their bars will start decreasing and will start flashing. Once their bar runs out, the animals will die. Get them some grass before that happens.

10) .... You can look at your goal for the day in the lower right corner any time you need a reminder of what they are.

11) .... Once you’ve made a product that counts toward your goal you can sell it right away. I made the mistake of waiting for the goal to be filled before I sold any of my products. Needless to say my truck and the warehouse filled up very quickly.

12) .... When you meet your gold goal for the day you will get a significantly higher amount of stars than when you only earn a silver star.

13) .... Achieving the gold goal can be tough at times but with some proper planning it can be achieved. It may take replaying some levels in order to do it.

14) .... Each day will begin with different buildings and different animals on the farm. Some buildings will be ready to go and some will need upgrades to produce a higher amount.

15) .... When the items fall from the airplane you don’t have to wait until it reaches the ground before you collect them. Click on them while they are in the sky, if you have enough space they will go directly into the warehouse.

16) .... Even if an animal is standing in front of a product you can still click through them to get it, especially if the item is flashing and is about to disappear.

17) .... When you sell an item by placing it on the truck, you will not get paid for it until the truck reaches its drop off location.

18) .... You can place items in the stores even before you pick up the goods that were produced. For example, you can place some more eggs in the powdered egg factory before you pick up the bags of powdered egg that are ready.

19) .... When goods have been processed and they are outside waiting to be picked up, you don’t have to click on them individually. Highlight the group of goods and whatever is highlighted will be picked up with just one click.

Music:
The only way to change the music, (unless you are adept at editing the executable file using a suitable hex editor) is to tun it off via the options menu and play your own music in the background, or have no music playing at all.

Conclusion:

I beta tested this game for Alawar several years ago. Loved the first one despite Time Management games not being one of my favorite genres, I thought the second one was an improvement on the first one, but further releases (another 5 at least) just felt like reskins of the same game. This is an excellent family game, that should appeal to most family members (maybe not 14-18 year old boys who are in to Counter-Strike: Global Operations or the latest Call of Duty, lol), with decent cartoon like graphics and game play that'll keep you on your toes without being stressed out. The pace of the game is just right (at least for me). The music is typical Alawar; a bit corny at times, but it suits this game so have scored music higher than I normally do. Highly recommended, even if you aren't into Time Management games.

Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of 'potential' cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away even more decent games.

Please leave some feedback once you've checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain what your reasons were for the feedback you post. You could also leave suggestions for improving the game, for example, this game could do with more block types for the levels editor, add more power-ups, describing the ones you think would be suitable, add some mini games (which seem all the rage in some arcade games now) or enable the user to be able to change the in game music easily.
