Exorcist

In Brief

Horror-themed hidden object game

Suggestions:
For those who don't like Hidden Object games, instead of posting a few words saying you think this is a waste of time, or other words to that effect, would you instead give some feedback detailing why you don't like the game and how it could be improved from your point of view. If you don't like this genre at all, explain why. There are thousands of subscribers (at least there used to be) to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content such as mini games, or a level editor that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you.

If you miss today's game giveaway you can get the game for free from MyPlayCity (who are the ones giving it away here today) HERE 24/7; however, please do be aware of the issues surrounding games from such sites compared to the game giveaway site - see the FAQ's thread over in the game discussion forums. (see below for links). To those who say this game is permanently free, it's not, it's actually a commercial game sold by Big Fish Games, Game house and other game distribution services. My Play City earn cash every time you play the game (it's the reason every time you shut the game down, it opens your browser to the MPC site). Part of the money MPC earns for you downloading and playing the game goes to the developer). Personally I don't play games from free game sites any more becasue I prefer not to have my browser opened. Though I may use an MPC game for review purposes, but the game will then be deleted when I'm done.

Installation

In the unlikely event that you get any activity from your anti-malware programs it may be because while installing this software, the activation module phones home to the giveaway site to confirm activation (not sure of the exact process) or it has detected the wrapper used to protect the giveaway, which contains Themida code that is sometimes seen as a threat by anti malware suites; these may set off some overly sensitive anti-malware programs. Please ensure you've thoroughly checked the game before reporting that it has malware because this may put off other users from downloading the program as any mention of virus immediately halves the download numbers on this site.

The site has been up since the 2nd Dec 2006 and there has never been any malware ever downloaded with any game given away, though there has been many users reporting false positives, that have been proven to be nothing more than poorly set up anti-malware programs.

The game installs to the following path by default, but can be changed during the installation wizard. The C drive may be different depending upon if you have more than one hard drive installed and whether your OS is installed to the C drive or a different one like mine (which is the F drive, though I always change it to my G drive which is where I prefer to keep all of my games):

C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPlayCity.com\Exorcist

The downloaded zip file is 165 MB in size and unpacks to a read me, setup.gcd security file and a dual activation and set up module. There are shortcuts installed to both the desktop (the game, one to MyPlayCity's home page and another for playing online games). The latter two can be deleted with no effect to the game. There's also a shortcut installed to the start menu/programs list; you'll find an uninstaller in the Start Menu/Programs folder and a link to MyPlayCity's' site. The installed game takes up 196MB of disk space. The game works on all my platforms (i.e. win 7 and Win 10 computers. I've not tested it on Win 8.1 as I upgraded all of my Win 8.1 computers and laptops to Win 10).

Just a note to newcomers, when the game has been installed you'll get a pop up asking if you want a shortcut to the game giveawayoftheday placed in your favourites/bookmarks, this is quite innocuous, however beware of the Install software Informer button that's to the left of the install bookmark button. The program (Software informer) isn't ad-ware, it's actually quite a useful program that informs you about updates to programs you have installed on your computer, but many users don't like the program, so I thought it prudent to warn you, just in case you end up accidentally clicking on the button and installing the program. You can also set up a Firefox permatab from this window.

There are a couple of excellent time limited game deals available at the moment that I just had to mention. The first will save you 88% off the recently released Trainz: A New Era Deluxe edition and the second deal is a free copy of Elite Dangerous: Arena (the online version of the game). There are also other free games available via a couple of the Indie Bundle sites. you can find links to these in my sticky post over in the Game Discussion forums HERE

Trainz A New Era Deluxe bundle has 88% off this weekend. The game and all four of the main route dlc's it would usually cost $179.9, but for a limited period, the bundle costs only $19.99. Check it out HERE or HERE. You get the main game plus four dlc packs all of which cost as much as the main game, but with this bundle you basically get the game cheaper than normal and all four dlc's free. i.e. Bidye Traction Railroad, Milwaukee Road - Avery Drexel, Season Town, and Warwick to Wallangarra. (See the videos below)

You can see a video of the Warwick to Wallangarra route HERE, the Season Town route HERE and the Bidye Traction Railroad HERE. The dlc's just add more routes to the main game and make the game more interesting; especially to rail enthusiasts like myself. There is however, a lot more to the game, with lots of free community made stuff and a thriving rail sim community. That said, I personally prefer Trainz rival rail sim called Train Simulator 2016, which in my opinion has much better graphics, especially the more recent routes that have been released. Also, all previous dlc's are compatible with or are upgraded to be compatible with the latest version, plus you automatically get the latest upgrade for free (for example I purchased the game back in 2009 when it was called Railworks. It has been upgraded every year since it's release on Steam, usually with a year number, for example Train Simulator 2012, 2013, 2014 etc and I've never had to pay a penny/cent more. The latest version is Train Simulator 2016. However, if you've purchased dlc for earlier versions of Trainz, they won't be compatible with newer version of the game, for example the Settle to Carlisle route, or engines such as The Duchess and Blue Comet. If you want the same add-on engines for the latest version you have to re-purchase them again; also, every time they bring out a new version of the game, , unlike Dovetails Train Simulator, you have to pay for it again.. You can often pick up the Steam version of Train Simulator 2016 with some of the expensive dlc's included for free. There's a lot of dlc for both games and they are very expensive, but if you just want to potter around with a train sim, both base games are great. Train simulator 2016 is still on sale following Steams summer sale. you can get the main game plus one dlc that usually costs £24.99 and the Steam edition of the game usually costs £24.99, but until Monday you can get both for only £7.49 (70% off). If you have the Steam version of Train Simulator you also have access to a multitude of community made content, though a lot of it will require dlc from the extensive library of add-ons (presently there are 65 additional route add-ons, 203 engines and around 50 rolling stock and environment add-ons.

Elite Dangerous: Arena is totally free over on Steam HERE for this weekend only. The offer ends on the 11th July. This game is well worth getting if you love space simulations. It's the latest version of the cult classic space trading game Elite. I backed the initial release of Elite Dangerous on Kickstarter about 4 years ago. The game was finally released last year and now has a couple of add-ons and a stand alone expansion, which is free this weekend.

Check this game play video HERE

If you are into simulation games per se, there are a couple of sim' bundles over on Bundle Stars, the first contains several agricultural sims plus others such as a skyscraper sim, mining and tunneling, Warehouse and logistics, airport sim and even a tow truck simulation. which you can find HERE, and a racing sim bundle called Born 2 Race 2 that contains 9 racing games such as rFactor, Whacky Wheels, Jet Racing Extreme, the classic Death Rally, Stuntmania reloaded RC )radio controlled) mini racers plus others which you can find HERE. You'll also find another 28 indie bundles on Bundle stars some as cheap as a couple of dollars for several decent games, that cover just about all the major genres including arcade games. There's also loads more bundles available via the other bundle sites such as Indie Gala, Humble Bundle, Otakumaker, Cubic Bundle, Groupee's etc. (see my thread over in the forums which I've linked to below)

WR, I have absolutely no idea why my comment has been scrubbed. There is no use of bad language. None. Anywhere. Is it the fact that I mention Gametop? Now I'm wondering what else is being deleted.

I like the game. It's a good story, and the puzzles aren't too difficult.

That being said, it's a progression from one HOG to the next (with a couple of puzzles), and the graphics limitations make it somewhat difficult to see the hidden objects.

I loved this game and was glad to see it again. Sadly I can not play it on my Win10 machine. I must have had this on my drive pre Win10 days. I have noticed this with most of my BigFish games that will not play anymore. :(

I know this game is a great game if you can get it to play. I even tried it from MPC and even that one will not play.

Suzanne, You might consider setting up your machine with a dual boot and have XP or something else pre-Windows 8 on the other partition. Then you can play a lot of older games that won't work in Windows 10.

Reply   |   Comment by Michael Summerset  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Michael, thank you for your reply and I did look into it. I found your solution a bit of a job to do as I have old games from way back 95 SE days that I now realised that there is no hope for unless the program makers decide to upgrade them. But I did find a solution to this game and I am now trying it on most of my BFGs and that is to find out the compatiability of the game and run a trouble shooter and use the highest level of that game. Exorcist was Win7 and I now have that game playing once again.

Downloaded quickly and installed easily. On a 15.6" laptop, the graphics are really really small. First two locations were tedious. Had to use help button 4 times. On a larger desktop screen this would not be an issue.
If you have a tablet or WindowsPhone beware - you will need to zoom.

The game installed without issue, but the graphics are really laggy on Windows 10. However, it's still playable. I played the first scene and wasn't impressed with the dark, almost monochromatic scene. I'm sure it's to make it difficult to find the items, but I became more frustrated by it instead of finding it a fun challenge. I usually love these types of HOG Adventures with eerie themes, but this probably won't be a favorite for me.

This game downloaded quickly and plays well on win10. I've read a few comments about it being too dark, I find most HOGs are dark, makes the game a bit more difficult, but being easy would not be much fun.
I don't like the ads at the start or MPC opening my browser when I finish.

Not very interested in HOGs but have downloaded quite a few that intrigued me more than this one - extra mini-games, art-style I liked more, more detailed and interesting story. The main thing is that I don't tend to play them because I prefer other types of games with my limited time and energy: word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, RPGs, Adventure games. And since I already have a backlog of HOGs (let alone the others), I'll pass on this one.
Thanks, tho!

Download slow to start, then it was completed - which makes a nice change.

Disabled AVG before unpacking the zip file and it installed quickly, which is also a nice change.

I've played the "scene 1" which contains a number of different puzzles and backgrounds. It's slow to move from one to another, but the graphics are worth the wait. The puzzles aren't the same old, same old, which is also good. The hint loads fairly quickly and I haven't yet had a penalty for clicking on the wrong thing too often.

I don't usually keep these games once I've completed them, but this one might be worth playing a second time in a month or so.

Thanks GGOTD.

At last a game that I can play! Have played only a few scenes and I'm looking forward to playing the rest. There are some challenges in the darker corners, but there is always the hint button which recharges quite quickly. Thanks MPC and GGD for keeping me amused this week.

This HOG game downloaded and installed quickly, but seemed a bit of a older game, as it didn't always display clearly.
And disclaimer; have to state that HOG's are not my favorite types of games, but just didn't get into the story line or the gameplay on this one at all. Won't stay on my system, and I do keep another one. Also don't get the usually horror theme of many of the HOG's, as it just makes them darker to play.
Don't have a problem with MPC, as long as you watch the installs very carefully, unchecking anything that you can along the install. But their games normally play well, and they have a wide variety.

Gary, It probably is your antivirus having some sort of a gesture based filter. Avast calls in "Potentially Unwanted Program." Turned that feature off years ago and have yet to get a virus.

Hi, HOG Downloads and installs fine. I appreciate the heads up for Toolbars and etc similar, so that I can uncheck. I will give this one a try even though I do not personally enjoy a HOG. This is Horror so it has to be : but next one do not design it to be "Dark". I hate games etc. that are dark, because it is hard to see. In the old days lots of games were that way and I did not like this point. I give this game a Playable rating and a Thank Yu All..

Happy to see an old-school, no Steam key needed, offering. I enjoy HOGs and horror themed games and this hits both so should be fun! First try at downloading got interrupted with an "unexpected error" but that was probably on my end. Second try went smoothly and installation on a Win10x64 laptop went fine. Cursor seemed a bit jumpy but I do not have any time to play today or see why that is.

Thanks GG team!

I'm sorry to read that you are not well Whiterabbit-uk, I do hope that you are feeling better soon.

Decent HOG game. Some of the text is hard to read at times. Have to keep in mind this games was originally released a few years ago for 4:3 screens. In full screen, the games does seem a bit sluggish at times. In Windowed Mode game responds better, but items are more difficult to find.

But my concern is, every-time I exit the game, this http://www.myplaycity.com/play.html?utm_source=exorcist&utm_medium=downloadable_play opens up in a web browser. Honestly, this could get annoying pretty fast. It would of been a nice gesture of MyPlayCity to at least remove it for the GGOTD users. Since this is being offered as a "Giveaway".

Thanks for the effort, but I have decided to uninstall the game.

SPOILER - If anyone is having trouble with the game, you can find a great guide http://www.bigfishgames.com/blog/walkthrough/exorcist-walkthrough/

This game has been on my buy list for a long time, I just never got around to doing it. I'm very happy to see it as a giveaway. Now I have no excuse.

It downloaded, installed and plays fine on my Win 10 all-in-one. It's an older game, so doesn't use all the real estate on my 27 inch screen, but it's good enough. As with many spooky themed games, many of the scenes are dark and objects hard to see. Some developers seem to think that goes with the territory. It would be nice if they could think outside the box a little on that.

I get that this comes from a site where all games are free. Those games come with add-ons and there are none in this giveaway. That's a huge plus. Sure, you can uncheck the boxes, but people don't always think to do that. Also, you don't know if there are other inclusions that don't have a check box. When it comes to what gets installed on my computer, I'm all about better safe than sorry. I appreciate GGOTD and the software provider making this easy.

I love HOGs and I love puzzle games, so this combination is just right for me. People who like shooters, action and space games may be less than thrilled with this giveaway. It's nice to have something for the rest of us. And it's awesome to just download a file without having to jump through hoops. Thanks, GGOTD!

Windows 10 Pro. If you can deal with the slow choppy mouser in full screen mode or change to window mode where there is no choppy mouse then this is a pretty decent game. Quick to download and I can't remember ever seeing so many hidden object screens in any HOG game. They have hidden some of the objects very well. I always skip all dialog so can't comment on that.

An older , low budget game, with dark and confusing hog scenes.
The art work is very blurry and the items very small.
Yet, the voice work is excellent and the story line interesting .
Were I able to wade through scene after scene of HOGS I would have enjoyed the game.
Even though I understand the reasons for using them, I really dislike the MPC snags as well .
Used my revo uninstaller to get rid of the game and low and behold there were LOTS of goodies skulking in the registry....

Okay, I'm running an HP with an AMD A4-5300 with Raedon graphics, 3.40 Ghz processor, 6G RAM and Win 10.

It won't run.

I installed, uninstalled and rebooted twice, same thing. It installs, no problem. When I open it I get the usual MPC Loading screen, he cursor turns into the hourglass and then...nothing. Waited a goot 15 minutes. Nothing. Checked the Task Manager, says Engine.exe Not Responding. It won't abort, can't close the program, stuck with the hourglass, have to reboot.

A shame, because from the screenshots the game looks gorgeous.

Hi WR, sorry you're not well, it seems to be going around in the States as well.

As for the game, I remember playing it about a year or so ago, I got it from MPC as I love HOGs. I really enjoyed the dialogue between Mephisto and Garret. Mephisto is the kind of man you'd love to hate; but because he's so charming as he taunts and toys with Garret. I wish more bad guys were like Mephisto.

Bah, I realize I cannot edit........I forgot to complete the sentence:

"........ but because he's so charming as he taunts and toys with Garret you forget he is a bad guy; he just comes off polite and honorable in his own way of tormenting Garret, it's unusual to see this kind of behavior in a bad guy.

Downloaded, Installed, and Activated with no problems on my Win10x64 machine. Actually was a little nervous about that as 10 isn't on the "supported" list. Using Avast as an A/V and didn't have to turn it off and F.F. as my browser.

Now...... on the the game itself. I will say right off the bat that HOG's are not my favorite games. (YAY for Tower Defense and Time Management!) But I do enjoy them every now and then. Playrix's Aquascapes and Fishdom H2o being my favorite's. This offering is by far the hardest Hidden Object game I've ever played. The colors are fairly drab, I guess in keeping in the spirit of the game (no pun intended), which makes finding some of the objects quite hard indeed. At least for these old eyes. Luckily you have an unlimited number of hints, after a short interval of course. There's also no time limit per screen which is a real blessing with this one. But HAVING to use hints really takes away from the enjoyment of this game, for me anyway. The mini games are just as hard if not more so than finding the objects too.

As mentioned by Semo, in full screen mode the cursor is very clunky and erratic. Full screen is checked by default and it was a chore to navigate to the options settings to uncheck it. Maybe other versions (supported) handle this better. It travels just fine in windowed mode though.

In conclusion, if you are a hardcore HOG player then you will probably like this, for the more casual hidden object seeker I'm not so sure. Way too hard imho. Graphics - decent but drab, gameplay ....... I guess that will be highly subjective with each person having their own opinion. For me, its way to hard for serious enjoyment. I'll be keeping this for awhile anyway as its good enough for those times when you're just tired to death of everything else you have and want a change. Everyday play? I don't think so.

Thanks to GAOTD and MyPlayCity for offering this to us.

In response to the question of what or why we may not like a genre: I used to dislike HOG (hidden object games) offered, because most of them were either too dark to see much of anything to find, or became boring to keep searching room after room.... So, I took a "pass" on any offered.

Then I discovered the newer HOGs were a combination of hidden objects and "locked room" games. I had avoided locked room games before, because I found the earlier ones also too difficult - couldn't always understand what I needed to do in any given room.

My introduction to the newer style was an MPC (My Play City) offering called "Snark Busters". They were easy enough to understand and play, so were a great way to learn the ins and outs of the genre.

I'm now becoming a fan.

I shall be downloading this game, but will probably not have chance to play it for a few days or so - also have some family things going on this summer, and my game time is becoming limited for a while. Besides, I'm still working on the latest Snark Buster offering from MPC! ;)

The fact of the matter is we might just as well skip the Game Giveaway site and just download from My Play City. I have many games from them and have never had a a tool bar or a Hi-Jacked Browser and even downloading from this site the game still wants to phone home, as for making the kitty cry, well big deal. Therefore if you dont like supporting Steam, Facebook, Twitter whatever then download direct from My Play City. This Site no longer serves its original criteria and is just a franchise, official or unofficial, of Steam. Thanks for all the great Games over the years but truly there is no point to this site any longer.

I installed the game, but the mouse is so and clunky I can't play it. Win 10 Pro, 3GHz, 8GB RAM, ATI Radeon Video Card. I have several other games from MPC and they all play fine.

Semo, Sorry, I meant to say SLOW and clunky. I found the game works fine in Windowed mode unchecking the full screen, but even with a 27 inch monitor the window is too tiny to enjoy a HOG.

I'm having the same problem. The cursor wiggles and dances all over the place, rendering the game unplayable.

Semo, a reboot might help. When I first started the game my mouse wouldn't even move but then it seemed to click in and move just fine. I played full screen on Windows 7 64bit.

Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately, rebooting did nothing for my problem, the cursor is still both very slow and kind of wiggly.

I tried playing the game in compatibility mode for XP, but that didn't help, either.

...................Moderator Comment........................

Maybe your security is blocking the installation becasue of the Themida wrapper. Themida code is sometimes seen as a threat becasue it can also be used to hide malware, so some anti malware suites may block it as a precaution. You may have to temporarily turn off your security to get the game installed

Hi fea. :)

If you are using (one of these antiviruses) avast, avg, Kaspersky, Norton, you could try these possible solutions:
1) put the setup.exe in the whitelist of your antivirus
2) disable the real-time/on-access scanning, just the time to install the software
3) boot windows in safe mode with networking, just the time to install the software

Hope this helps.

Should games from MyPlayCity really be considered giveaways since they are ALWAYS free anyway? You don't even get different terms here - they drag you to their site each time you use them, just like the direct downloads (really annoying behavior btw.)

...................Moderator Comment........................

Ray, all the games you can download from MyPlayCity are actually commercial games sold at places like Big Fish Games, Gamehouse and Steam, they are not actually free per se. The owners of MyPlayCity pay the developers of those games for every game that is downloaded. Every time you play a game that comes from MyPlayCity (MPC), you earn MPC cash, part of which goes to the developer. The difference between the game giveaway version and that downloaded from MPC is that they have removed the check-boxes from this version, whereas you stand more of a chance of getting tool bars or your home page changed if you download it from MPC

Hi.

To get the original game without advertisements, and if you're a new costumer, use the discount coupon NEW299: you'll pay it USD 2.99 or EUR 2,29.
Otherwise (not a new customer), discount coupon OFF: USD 4.99 or EUR 3,81.

If you try the Big Fish Game Club Free Trial, it costs even less (but after the trial finishes, you'll pay USD 6.99 or EUR 5,35 each month).

voorbijganger, MPC pays, not game giveaway. What they're saying is a developer makes a game and MPC says "we'll sell that for you but we get a portion of the money you make. MPC then puts adware and toolbars in their program you pay for and download from their site. So you pay MPC $2.99-4.99 per game but they spy on your computer via toolbar. Developer gets paid, MPC gets paid. BUT ... MPC is allowing game giveaway of the day to have a game for one day only. MPC works something out with the game dev I'm sure but essentially we get the game minus all the stuff the put on when it's on their site. We get a free game with no toolbar to track us (we do get two extra shortcuts to get us to go to their site) and all they want in return is a good, honest review of the game and perhaps for us to visit MPC. MPC has the potential of gaining new customers and making more money and increase website traffic. So even if they don't make money, they benefit and the dev gets the word out about their game so if folks missed it free they'll go buy it.

So it's not a gift that anyone has to pay for really unless MPC and the dev worked something out. GGOTD gets a free game to give us an option to download. We don't pay, we don't get spyware or adware. Free. I hope that helps.

You can get this game and the other two in the series from Gametop for free and they do not use the toolbar whammies. Note: You do still get the gametop page in your browser upon exiting, so you're getting exactly what is being offered here though you don't have to turn off your antivirus to get it.
