In Brief

A casual puzzle game.

Suggestions:

When you've received your key for 'Escape This' please give some feedback about your opinion of the game, for example, what you liked or disliked about it, or how it could be improved from your point of view . If you don't like this genre at all, please explain why. What, improvements, if any, would change your opinion? There are thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content such as better or more original mini games, or a level editor that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you. Maybe you think the graphics are a little dated and are in need of re skinning, or maybe you've just had enough of the genre and want to see something different or something with more originality?

If you miss the offer totally you can get the game 24/7 via Steam HERE. It usually costs £0.79/$0.99 but is on sale at the moment until 27th March with 35% off i.e. £0.51/$0.64,

Installation:

Once you've found your Steam key you have to activate the game via your Steam client. Once activated it will be permanently tied to your Steam profile and you'll be able to install the game at any time, anywhere on any computer, so long as you can validate who you are (usually via emails etc.). If you don't have a Steam account you will first have to download and install the Steam client HERE

Then create a Steam profile/account. Once that has been completed you can input the Steam code that you've received (after completing the form filling) via the game button along the top of the Steam client, (located between friends and Help). From the drop down menu select 'Activate a product on Steam'. This opens a product activation window. Just follow the prompts to complete activation. Once the Steam code has been accepted, the game will be permanently associated with your Steam account and can be installed any time you wish.

The Game:

Escape This is a casual puzzle game where the main objective is for the player to complete the given stage. Each stage is selected at random, though you can choose which map to play via the main menu.

The main menu is very basic and does look a little confusing, but it does serve its purpose. You can download extra levels from the Steam workshop or alternatively use the games editor that comes with the game to create your own levels. You can also upload your created levels to the Steam workshop to share with the Steam community of which there are 140 million users.

The game is very basic, but for the price works reasonably well. However I did get the occasional crash and had to open Task Manager to close the game down. There are twenty puzzles to solve, 10 basic, eight medium, a maze and a multiplayer map. However, the multiplayer map appears to be just another medium difficulty puzzle as I was able to complete it (after several attempts) with no sign of another player. The basics of the game are move your block using the arrow keys avoiding the red area's. If you touch anything red, you have to start from the beginning of the puzzle. The music is quite catchy, but becomes annoying after a short time as it is just a small loop of electronic music. You can disable the sound from the main menu.

Other Reviews, Videos and a Slideshow of images:

You can see Steam community reviews of HERE, and you can see a video of game play on the Steam page HERE, HERE.

Conclusion:

A very basic puzzle game that is relatively easy to complete. The five Steam achievements are some of the easiest achievement sets you can get on Steam. It took me literally 5 minutes to get all five achievements. Not the best puzzle game I've played, but enjoyed the time I played. Very basic graphics. I'd give this a 6 out of 10 considering how cheap it is, the number of puzzles included, the ability to create your own and being able to download others puzzles.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the developer Four Winged Studio for giving away Steam keys for this Casual Puzzle Game and also to the game giveaway team, as always, for securing other ways to get free games, in this case a Steam key.

No one is forcing you to do anything. If you want the game then you'll do those simple tasks. if you don't want to do those simple tasks, that take literally a few seconds each, then you don't get the game, it's as simple as that. The reason this method has been adopted is to spead the giveaway message faster. The more community members we have, the better the games. since Steam games were added to the giveaway library, we have seen a greater spread of genres given away here. That means a better choice of games. Prior to last year apart from the occasional game virtually every game we got was either a match three, time management or hidden Object game. The community has grown significantly since Steam games were added. If you are not happy with these methods,m there are other places you can get your free games. If you like Steam games you'll find that other sites giving away free steam games for example Indie Gala, also require you do link to Facebook, Twitter and other sites before you can get the free keys. If you genuinely feel that you are doing what you said (unfortunately I had to delete the comment due to it's inappropriate language) then the only alternative if you really want the game is to pay for it.

I can't even figure out how to download this thing.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

My review explains how to get this game. It is not downloaded from the giveaway site. Once you've completed the two tasks you should be set a Steam key to the email you used to sign in, though if you've used a different email in the past, the Steam code may have been sent to that email despite using a different one today. Once you have your Steam key you need to open the Steam client (If you don't have Steam installed, I've described how to get it and what to do in my review above), then activate the game. Once activated you can download the game directly from the Steam library

Too hard on my eyes - makes it unplayable for me. Blurriness and neon (or too dark) seem to be trending as ways to add Difficulty to games, but I can't play a game if I can't SEE it. Been passing on a lot of otherwise potentially nifty games of late.

Sorry to hear that wyrwolf. Hope something can be done about it? Do you have cateracts? I worked in ophthalmology about 14 years ago before my accident, and always remember those who had cataract surgery; how they marveled at the clear vision and colors being vibrant and clear after their operation.

Very basic "go from A to B without hitting anything" game. Can become slightly challenging due to the drifting of your block even without touching the controls. Played all levels within an hour though. Workshop.....Rabbit... A tip, check workshop before mentioning it as source of extra levels. So far only 3 items are present, non of them a valid level. This might be due to the lack of explenation on how to actually make them or an ingame option to create maps. Appearantly new maps can be made by creating a text file and work with letters and words like "player" and "exit" but what each letter does is so far unclear.

I appreciate the offer but I would not recommend this game in it's current form. Perhaps with better explenation of the game functions, how to make maps etc it would be better

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi Anita

Thank you for your feedback Mavadelo. Yes a very quick game. I presume you got all of the achievements as well? Took me 5 minutes to get all five and I wasn't even trying. Didn't think to actually check the workshop. Maybe someone will write a help document to add to their Steam profile. Very simplistic game. I remember playing something like this 20 years ago, but was much more challenging. Can't remember the name of it now though; was on the Atari I think.

your sign in process is a mess. When I do get signed in it does not register the task. Make it more simple. The task posted to the accounts but it did not send the key. This is getting to be a hassle with all this click this and click that and follow here and there.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi noaquie

When you sign in you are not able to complete the tasks. Please try another browser. i've had similar problems when using Waterfox (my preferred browser), so go to Internet Explorer to complete these tasks. It's usually the Facebook task that I can't complete using Waterfox. I expect it's the way i have it set up, but as I know it's solvable by swapping to a different browser, I don't bother to fault find. Out of the thousands of community members applying for this key (thousands have already been given away), only a few community members appear to be posting problems about not being able to get a key. This is usually due to the issue you mention. Please try a different browser. I'm sure that will solve the issue. You'll find virtually every computer on this planet is set up slightly differently. That could mean some computers may be running software that conflicts with the giveaway site in some way, or other issues becasue of the computers configuration. I'm no tech expert so cannot explain further.

The other issue is not receiving keys when the community member has completed all tasks. This usually arises when they use a different email to the one they previously used when applying for a Steam key. For some reason the first email used via the IP address is the one you need to use every time you apply for a key for one of these games. This was added as a precaution following the first Steam key giveaway, when it became obvious that some community members were farming the keys then selling them on via one of the many Steam key sites. This led to many community members (including myself) being disappointed as after the first 15 000 keys went within three or four hours, they realised what was happening and the giveaway was stopped. One community member reported that they had seen shortly after the game went live someone offering for sale or exchange for other games multiple keys for the very same game. The giveaway tech team then implemented measures to combat this. If you've used a different email than the first time you signed in, the key is more than likely been sent to the original email you used to sign in. If you used a throwaway email, like I know some community members do, then the key will have been sent to that email and lost.

If you still haven't received a key, please use the giveaway contact form, which you will find HERE. Include a screen capture of the completed tasks, the name and the email you used to enter the competition.

I do not agree with what you said about the sign in process being a mess. As I said above, thousands of community members are not having issues with the signing in process. If it was messed up, we would have literally hundreds of regulars posting comments saying they couldn't get their games. It's very rare to get more than 0.01% of the community posting comments here, so even if you saw several comments mentioning problems, they are a very insignificant percentage (Talking statistics, not pointing fingers) of the overall community base here.

In reply to your second comment, of course you cannot share your thoughts if you haven't received a key. I do say ''When you've received your key for 'Escape This' please give some feedback about your opinion of the game, for example...... '' Please follow my instructions above. Hopefully you'll either find the key in the original email you used (assuming you did), or on contacting the giveaway team with evidence that you completed your tasks, they can check to see if the key was sent to that email (have you checked your spam folder), and maybe they will send it out to you. I'm just a volunteer, so cannot send keys out myself as I do not have access to them.

It says to perform both actions but only shows to follow them on Twitter. Did that. Didn't get a key.

Hi Anita

Please excuse the very late reply. i actually started a reply about four hours ago, but got called away, and totally forgot about this until now. Of the two tasks only one is to follow Twitter, the other is a Facebook task.

Anita Simpson, I saw that as well. My AdBlock Plus blocked the facebook, but not the twitter.
When I turned OFF the AdBlock Plus for this page I could see both.
Perhaps that is what happened.

Century22, Thanks. It's too late now but I'll know in the future. I did have adblock turned on.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi Anita

If you contact the giveaway team HERE, include your name and email and explain that you were not able to complete the two tasks, which you found out too late was being blocked by your ad blocker, so you were not able to get a free key. The giveaway team may still have some keys spare and send you one.

Alternatively, you could contact the developer Four Winged Studio HERE (you'll find their email on that page), again explaining what had happened. I've found over the years many indie developers have been extremely generous with their games. I for one have usually always purchased other games from such developers, or offered to beta test games for them; for example, I contacted a particular developer several years ago just to congratulate them on a particular game I'd purchased and was offered copies of all his previous games (five games in total) for free and he asked if I'd like to beta test his latest game, which i did and was given a copy of that for free as well. Some of those games I still consider my favorite arcade games. I used to post mini reviews of all the games I purchased via Alawar around 10 - 12 years ago. One of the games I purchased wouldn't work, no matter what I did, so I contacted Alawar and they offered a couple of alternatives, but I'd already purchased those. So they gave me my money back plus a permanent code that would give me 50% off all games I purchased from them from that date onward (not used it in a while because they have changed the way you activate Alawar games which I don't like, so stopped buying from them. Alawar even sent me a gift box one Christmas that included a mug advertising their latest version of Magic Ball (was Magic Ball 3), a courier shoulder bag, a kitchen wall clock, a calendar and a couple of other gifts. I also ended up beta testing for them and received quite a few free games before leaving the beta test team as I was otherwise engaged on other projects. I've received many free games over the last 20 years simply by writing to developers. So if you do contact them, I reckon there's a good chance they would give you a key.

Hi Steve

Sorry for the very late reply, got called away this morning. Only just got back. I got the same thing, so tried a different browser. I usually use Waterfox, but went for Internet Explorer and it worked okay. If you continue to have issues contact the giveaway team via the contact form HERE, take a screen shot of the message that pops up that isn't letting you use Facebook, the name you used to sign in and the email.

I do not use Twitter and refuse to have a FaceBook account.

So, no game for me?

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi JJ Vastiau

I don't use Twitter or Facebook either, but I did create accounts specifically to get these free games; (so you could say I do use them now, but I don't use them as social media). Some other sites that give away free stuff also ask for such tasks to perform before you get the free stuff and I reckon in the not too distant future those free game sites like MyPlayCity, TooMky Game, Jenkat Games, freeGamePick and Gametop will start to use them especially as more people discover how to stop their home page opening to the home pages of those sites whenever they play one of their games (as they rely on the income earned whenever you visit their site. I don't have any contacts on my Twitter or Facebook accounts. I even created a new gmail email so that the accounts are totally separate from my usual emails. It's your choice not to create such accounts, but many sites are slowly moving over to using Facebook and Twitter as it is an ideal way to spread their sites through friends lists etc. If you are worried about security, using a newly created email and only using them for getting free stuff would not compromise your computers security. Though I do realise some people don't use them for ethical reasons. Each to their own. The giveaway team started using Twitter and Facebook last year when the first Steam games were introduced. They need to expand the community base. the more community members the more likely we are to get better games and software. F.B. and Twitter are a means to an end. Unfortunately some users who refuse to create such accounts will lose out. That said, this game is dirt cheap and is on sale a the moment.

Please help me. It shows my twitter account and FB account as 2 different accounts and when I complete one task, it logs me out of that and I can never complete 2 tasks simultaneously. It doesn't merge my Twitter and (Facebook, Steam, Mail) account...

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

I've had the same issue when trying to get a second key for my son. I think this is becasue the giveaway site keeps a record of the first time you log in using your Facebook/Twitter accounts and you have to use those same accounts each time associated with the IP address used a the time. .This is to stop community members trying to get multiple keys. Try using a different browser, or if you do have more than one Twitter or Facebook account, use the other account.
