We had two game giveaways yesterday (Friday) one of which is still live till Monday (Tank Brawl), we also have a game on Sunday and on Monday. The game some of you may have missed yesterday was the second dlc pack 'Team of Justice' for the free to play game 'Forge of Gods'.

El Dorado Quest

In Brief

Today's game giveaway is another game from MyPlayCity. A match 3 puzzle released 9 years ago with slightly dated graphics, but reasonable game play elements. If you liked games like the Atlantis series, you'll probably like this one to..

main menu
options
Suggestions:
If you like or don't like today's game please give some feedback about your opinion of the game, for example, what did you like about the game, or how it could be improved from your point of view . If you don't like this genre at all, please explain why. What improvements would change your opinion? There are thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content such as better or more original mini games, or a level editor that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you. Maybe you think the graphics are a little dated and are in need of re skinning, or maybe you've just had enough of the genre and want to see something different or something with more originality?

If you miss today's game giveaway you can always get the game via MyPlayCity (MPC) 24/7 HERE. The only difference between the main MPC download and today's game giveaway is that some of the 'annoyances' such as check boxes that could result in home page changes to your browser, or even your provider being changed completely are avoided. Installing toolbars is also a favorite tactic from free game sites like MPC, so the removal of the checkboxes frees community members from those risks. What hasn't changed is your browser will still open to MPC's home page whenever you close the game down. The reason for this happening is because MPC have to pay the owners of the games for being allowed to give then away for free. Everytime your browser is redirected to MPC's home page MPC earns cash, some of which goes to the developer. There are ways to stop your browser from opening and being redirected to MPC (and other free game sites), but doing so will eventually compromise such sites because the more community members stop their browsers from opening every time they close down a game from sites such as MPC, the less money MPC will earn (because they earn cash from advertisments everytime you visit) the less they can pay developers, so fewer games will become available. Eventually as more people know how to stop their browsers from opening, it could compromise the free game sites to such an extent they may disappear, taking away the ability for those who cannot afford to spend money on games from getting them for free. If you know how to stop your browser from opening, please keep the information to yourself. posting it here will result in your comment being deleted. Thank you.

The game downloads to a 30.2 MB zip file that unzips to three files; i.e. a setup.gcd security wrapper, the set up file and a read me document. Those with multiple hard drives are able to save the giveaway's on any drive they wish, though installations default to the C drive if no changes are made. The installed game is 37.5 MB in size. The game installs to the following path by default,:

C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPlayCity.com\El Dorado Quest

Four shortcuts are installed to the desktop three of which can be safely deleted (Play Online Games, MyPlayCity Games and a free online game which seems to change every time I install for example Imperia Online, Big Farm Online, Stormfall Online, or Klondike Online). Also, if you don't like icons installed to the quick launch task bar, make sure you uncheck the box when the additional tasks window appears (after the Select Start Menu Folder window)

Depending on your individual perspective and overall familiarity with the match-three genre, you’ll either be thrilled or chagrined with the amusements that wait in store. The setup couldn’t be more typical: Starting on a world map (and one that shows your progress only once you’ve beaten all the individual levels from each stage), you’ll visit an increasingly exotic range of locales. Framed by misty volcanoes and creeper-choked jungles which adorn colorful scenario backdrops, each self-contained encounter presents itself in the form of a varyingly-shaped grid filled with squares containing emeralds, bracelets, masks, stone eyes and other bizarre objects.

The usual swapping of 2 tiles to create horizontal or vertical rows of three or more matched objects , with matches disappearing from the board once achieved. (Higher-situated tiles then fall down, filling in the gaps left by the destroyed matches, and potentially causing massive, screen-clearing chain reactions.) Any tiles located beneath an object that was part of the match turn gold, with pieces of 7 collectible amulets appearing on-screen when you’ve changed the color of all squares. Once you’ve made amulet pieces appear, you’ll then need to acquire them by removing any tiles underneath, with the entire process having to be completed before an ever-dwindling timer runs out and robs you of a limited supply of lives (three).

amulet part
break glass
Innovative the concept isn’t to say the least, especially since scores are low (think 5 points per tile) and there’s no real reward for making huge combos as in competing games, which award cool extras like eye-popping spells or hidden achievements for better performance. But there is one intriguing twist presented, in that on some levels, you’ll need to remove certain squares via matching to clear a path for Bob and Jane (depicted as animated figures who automatically stroll open pathways on your monitor) to reach specific objects.

For example, you may be required to clear the way forward so Bob can flip a switch to make a boulder drop and destroy a barrier that’s blocking access to an amulet, or so Jane can grab a key that opens a troublesome door. It’s certainly a clever touch, but really, with your biggest payout for doing so the chance to click once on a shovel icon then click on some rocks to watch them automatically removed by the computer, it’s hardly the pinnacle of excitement or interactivity.

clearing path
eldorado_quest_640x480_screenshot_1
Granted, the game does score points for its simple learning curve, general user-friendliness and, surprisingly enough, a catchy musical score that’s filled with tribal chanting and primitive beats. But play mechanics are highly repetitive, the art style bizarrely Eastern European and selection of collectible power-ups and obstacles less than inspired. (Think hammers that you can grab to break individual blocks and lightning bolts that annihilate entire vertical rows, or glass tiles and stones that require nearby matches to remove.) The key takeaway being that if you’ve played nearly any other recent offering in the same category like Heroes of Hellas or Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, it’s hard to go back to such a simply-executed concept.

That’s not to say we don’t like El Dorado Quest. But with only a single play mode and very little in the way of compelling eye candy or fresh gimmicks, how much you’ll enjoy the title depends on how many similarly-styled adventures you’ve already tackled beforehand.

Conclusion:

El Dorado Quest is a moderately decent match three, with reasonable graphics and a progressive story board. The game may be a little dated by the latest match three releases and the swap mechanics are a little frustrating (with respect to the action); but, overall the game is worth downloading, especially if you love match three's. :)

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank MyPlayCity for giving away El Dorado Quest minus the check-boxes and also to the game giveaway team, as always, for providing a safe environment to download free games.

Useful Information:
The problems section that used to be posted here with the weekly game reviews is now included in the Game Discussion FAQ's thread; which you can find HERE. It together with some other sections were removed to cut down on the length of the review, which some community members found irritatingly long winded. :)

The latest free game over on Origin is still Nox.

You can get it HERE. Please note that you do require the Origin game platform to be able to download and install the game. uPlay were giving away Rayman:Origins last week. not sure if it's still available, but if it is, you'll get it HERE. Really enjoyed playing this game. The graphics are simple but sweet and the game itself is pretty relaxing at the first level. I'm happy to get more of these PlayCity games from GGOTD. I do prefer having a relaxed mode, so I can leave a game open during interruptions, which I get quite a lot. So relaxed levels are always my suggestion.

Thanks for bringing this game to our free downloads. I've gotten other games from Play City over the years and I'm glad they still provide PC freebies. TY

Hi,

The game downloaded quickly on 8.1 and set up as quickly! The graphics are decent and game play is smooth.
The game is enjoyable and so far simple as a match 3 game. I received the first amulet and starting on the second. There are no surprises here, it is same old as far as these types of games go, but enjoyable if you like this format. I would punch it up a bit! Same old story! There is a littler variation where you make a path for the explorers and drop down the item when you find it. Thanks for another good game!

Hi, I followed your instructions to a t but I still got The Longest Journey to come up when I redid El Dorado Quest. I should have mentioned that the adventure game The Longest Journey was NOT a dl from here. It's a game I bought. The other dl from here was Panopticon Path of Reflections & before that game, I've never had a problem with this doing this before. And just to add, I delete cookies often. I'm just plain stumped. I do believe if I ever decide to play The Longest Journey again, I'll have to start from the beginning. I think both these games reset it. I don't want to take it off my computer, even though I have the disk because it's an older game & really hard to set up. I do thank you for trying to help. Much appreciated.

..............................Moderator Comment.............................

Hi Janie, Did you find where the game had been installed to? If you can find the executable you should be able to create a shortcut directly from that and send it to the desk top. that should then work. If it doesn't it may be something in your windows registry that is causing the problem. You could search the registry by opening up the registry editor which can be done by running the Regedit command. Just type Regedit in the search field and it should open a small window asking if you want to open the registry editor. If you do decide to check the registry, I'd first make a back up just in case you delete something that shouldn't be deleted..

I have enjoyed the games that have been offered and play them all. However today's El Dorado game installed easily and without problems. When I played the game, I was partway through the second level and the whole screen went black and crashed my computer(Windows 10 64 bit ASUS. The sound disappeared and the computer just restarted.
I reloaded the game and the same crash happened but not at the same point in the game. I tried a third (after re-start) and the same crash. Nothing else was running on my computer.
I decided to un-install the program. There are no error messages, just a blank black screen.
Any suggestions?

..............................Moderator Comment.............................

Hi John, please excuse the late reply. That's an odd problem. Check the FAQ's as I do think there is mention of black screens somewhere. If that isn't helpful try updating your graphic drivers. Whether that will work is debatable as this is a very old game. Make sure you have a copy of Direct X 9 installed. Although Vista and above have higher Direct X installed and they should be backwards compatible, it's not always the case, so you may need to install direct X 9.0c. You could check the event logs by opening up the event viewer (just type Event Viewer in the search field. To make it easier to find any error messages it may be a good idea to run the game again, then immediately check the logs as they record things as they happen, so you should find any entries related to th e game as the most recent entries. Hopefully you will glean clues as to what the problem is from the error messages. Please do post any if you aren't sure what they mean.

I loved this game & lost it, heaven knows where. I dl'ed it and unpacked it, etc. The problem was it opens another game called The Longest Journey and I had another HOG that I dl'ed from here that did the same thing. Any help or suggestions would be great. Thanks.

..............................Moderator Comment.............................

Hi Janie, sometimes the giveaway cookie becomes corrupted and this can lead to the games downloaded from the giveaway site installing into a previous giveaway. I would reinstll the game, making sure the install path matches the one i posted in my review at the top of the comments. Hopefully that will sort the problem out. If it doesn't change the install path to say My Programs x86/Games/El Dorado Quest, then once installed go to where it was installed and create a new desktop shortcut from the games executable.

EL Dorado Quest
While it looks like just another 'Match-3' with a somewhat dated interface, we really have had fun with this one.
Downloaded and installed well on a Win 10 x64 Pro system, and plays like it should, although note for some reason the older Playcity games like to default to a lower screen resolution even though we've got a bit of horsepower there, and its a simple and quick adjustment through options to change it to a higher setting :)
Plays well, and while we haven't got far through it yet, this one will stay on the machine. To nice of a day out to play much, as it's absolutely gorgeous weather for once here! Thank you GOTD and PlayCity for this one though!

Nice little game which goes well with my old computer. I'm still waiting for rewards for big matches but other than that, making a pathway for Jane is a little bit different and worth following. Thanks MPC & GOTD it's great for that spare half hour.

I'm really enjoying the path part. I've played games with paths before but I think they were always the main game so it's fun to have it just thrown in here and there.

I'm glad that you mentioned how opening the browser helps pay for the games we get from MPC because that sort of thing doesn't occur to me and I'm sure I'm not the only one. As neme says, this knowledge makes it tolerable, sort of like commercials while watching tv and it's a lot better than the places that toss commercials in while you're trying to play.

Nice on Win 10 x64 Pro. Makes shortcut. Game pretty basic of its kind. Sliders for music that starts out ok but no variety so lowered to near zero. Sound effects ok, graphics clear images. Game play on first round did take me down to near Time out but got it done. No relax mode but seemed 'fair' compared to that similar Pirates ghosts box cells one which got real annoying by popping in extra blocking actions of spider webs and things. Haven't gotten those yet. Offers you to win Hammer, Lives, etc. that will likely come in handy later on. So 8.5/10 for fans and keep for casual play since can quit soon as finish a level. As a rule for this Time Only style, if a level does 'time out' just replay it then & there and often will be easier that time. Don't just quit and come back later. yrmv Thanks GOTD.

My computer a little older, so I say good graphics. Game worked perfect on my computer- some new games don't as they have big requirements. This El Dorado reminded me of "Call of Ages", I think that was the Name. I loved it, so I will enjoy this one. Don't have the Call of Ages anymore as I formatted computer. So I really have to Take my hat off to yu guys, TY, GGOTD...

..............................Moderator Comment.............................

Hi Philip, you can also get Call of Ages from MyPlayCity (MPC). Just make sure you uncheck all of the check-boxes during installation and the only thing that will happen, apart from being able to play one of your favorite games is your browser will be opened when you close the game down and open up at MPC's home page.

You can get the game HERE

How do you install the game? I followed the readme instructions but can't find it. All I got was activated... Can't find it in programs folder neither the desktop (shortcut). Ty

..............................Moderator Comment.............................

Hi, Make sure you've unpacked the downloaded zip file, then select the orange colored file with the key symbol and click on it. Note where it's being installed to. That should be:

C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPlayCity.com\El Dorado Quest

Once the game has been installed four shortcuts should be installed to the desktop, three of which (as explained in my review at the top of the comments) can be deleted. If you cannot see these, it's likely your security software is blocking the installation of the game. This is because the setup.gcd file contains Themida code, which is also used to hide malware. Some security suites when detecting Themida code, will automatically block any files that contain such code. But, in this case the code is being used to stop hackers from ripping off the games executable, so you should allow your security to let this through. You may have to configure your security to do this or alternatively turn off your security temporarily to allow the game to be installed, then immediately turn it back on. Since the first game was given away back in late 2006 there has never been a game given away that was infected with malware.

El Dorado downloaded quickly on my Windows 10 Anniversary x64 desktop. Installed like a charm and runs smoothly.
I enjoy match-3 type games, especially when I'm just playing "mindlessly".
While it's your typical match 3 game, the graphics are nice and music enjoyable. No hitches so far, although I didn't play very far into the game.
Thanks GOTD team and MPC for another free game. My only complaint is all the garbage that is put on your desktop besides the link to the game, but - hey - that's why there's also a garbage can residing there! I understand exactly why it happens and appreciate the fact that all the browser hi-jack etc links aren't part of the install package. Just a minor complaint and dealing with a few icons that I have to throw out is much better than the alternative - no game giveaway at all!! Thanks!

Why are we being forced to share through Fakebook? These are either free downloads or they are not free without a catch. You tried this .........removed by moderator due to unsuitable language.............. before, stop being deceptive and making us jump through hoops for "free" software. Either that or remove my email from your list as I wont be downloading any more.

..............................Moderator Comment.............................

You do not need to share through Facebook. It's there for those who wish to. When you click on the Facbook link it will bring up the Facebook log-in page. You can cancel that window without logging into a Facebook account and the download button will then turn green, allowing you to download the giveaway application or game (depending which site you are downloading from) without ever having to sign into facebook. The reason the giveaway team have included it is so that those who do use Facebook have the opportunity to advertise the giveaway site to all of their friends in the hope that the giveaway site expands its community base. The more who know about the give away site the more likely we are to get better software because the more giveaway community members there are, the more money developers will make because there will always be those people (like myself) who end up buying other software from those developers; (either because the developer creates good software, or they feel obliged (as a thank you for giving free software) to buy from them, Obliged may be a little strong, but I'm sure you know what I mean.

There's nothing deceptive about the way the giveaway site are giving away games and/or software. Times have changed and there is a lot more competition with respect to sites giving away free software, both applications and games, , so for the giveaway team to get their message out to the wider world they have had to resort to different methods of disseminating the sites presence. If you wish to stop receiving emails from the giveaway site, you just need to unsubscribe from them. You should find a link at the end of the email allowing you to do so.

I've removed part of your comment above because the language you used wasn't suitable for a family site like this

First, usual thanks for making a game available without too many hoops, contests, steam signup, etc. Reminds of me of why I was such a faithful user before the "new nonsense" started :). Today's game downloaded and installed without a hitch on Win 8.1 except for the usual Play City dances of having to create a shortcut to game.exe instead of the included one (I do miss being able to do engine.exe to avoid the phoning home though I understand the concern and find it tolerable in exchange for a freebie), nuke the multiple shortcuts, change the install directory, etc. Have played the first few levels to try it out, and it plays fine.

The game itself is a pretty standard Atlantis-type match 3, with tokens to get and barriers to overcome and the added twist of creating a path for the explorer to trip a lever, etc. So far, nothing much distinguishing (i.e. no added puzzles, etc.) but it plays well and is fun and nice change-up. As for the complaint about games already being free from myplaycity, I may be incorrect but I believe that many, or at least some, of the games I've gotten here are only available free from myplaycity as trials that expire or are crippled. And I love coming here because I learn about new games I would not have noticed on my own (especially the "adventure/puzzle" games I especially love) and have recommended some to folks who then purchase them. Thanks, WR!

..............................Moderator Comment.............................

Thank you for your feedback neme and for understanding the need for MPC games and other games from free game sites opening your browser. As you partially say, 'it's a tolerable
inconvenience in exchange for a freebie'. You reasons for coming to the game giveaway site is one of the reasons I started to post reviews. i.e. the site introduced me to genres I'd not played before and probably wouldn't have purchased until I'd discovered that they were quite enjoyable to play, for example match three games. Prior to discovering the giveaway site my favorite genres were limited to Breakout games and side scrawling space shooters/ space invaders/top down alien shooters.

Bong, if after disabling your virus protection temporarily you run into the problem of not having a desktop shortcut installed again ever, simply open File Explorer and go to your programs folder, find the MyPlayCity folder and in that you will find the game, go into THAT folder and look for the file named "game(.exe)" simply right click on it and hold down while dragging to your desktop, then release and choose "create shortcut here", that will work on every Play City game I've seen so far ;)

Why keep offering games from myplaycity.com, they are free regardless of offered here or on their web site. I hate games that have to phone home on start up or closing the game, that free with attachments!

..............................Moderator Comment.............................

Hi Beth, it has become increasingly difficult to get free games from developers. They have found other ways to make money, for example adding their game to a humble bundle can earn them thousands of dollars because such bundles sell millions of copies. Bundles sell for as little as a dollar for several games, but the point is, the majority of those buying the indie bundles would 'not' normally buy those games in those bundles, but becasue the bundles are perceived to be amazing bargains (most are becasue you can save hundreds of dollars by purchasing some bundles, but usually anywhere from $50 to $100). All of the developers who have contributed to a bundle get a cut of the pie. Giving games away via sites such as the game giveawayoftheday does not earn as much cash as they used to. Free game sites like MyPlayCity (MPC) earn a significant amount of cash through advertising. Every time a community member boots up a game from a free game site such as MyPlayCity, they are earning that site money, some of which goes to the developer for allowing them to give away the game. The difference between the MPC version of today's game and the one we are getting is that the potential for your browser to be opened has been reduced because the check-boxes that usually show up when you install a game from a free game site have been removed. This means there's no chance your browser will be changed to a different one, your home page won't be changed and no tool bars will potentially be installed to your browsers. All of these actions also earn MPC money, some of which again goes to the developer of the game being given away. Quite a few of the games given away by MPC are now owned, or at least the license to give them away has been purchased by MPC, including today's game. for example, El Dorado Quest was originally released in 2007, but it's now dated 2009 because MPC purchased the license from the developer in 2009. The browser opening is totally innocuous. It's only purpose is to earn MPC and the developers who own the license cash so that they can either continue to give the game away, or in the case of the developer, possibly create more games. Apart from the annoyance of your browser being opened, there is no malicious software installed to your computer, no spyware or Trojan, just a free game. To get rid of the browser opening, you just click on the X and it's gone, with no residual effects. A final word. Sites like MyPlayCity arose, initially because arcade games used to be very expensive. The cheapest arcade games pre-2008 cost $19.99 or more. Many community members couldn't justify spending so much on games, so sites like MyPlayCity sprang up to fill a gap. The gamegiveawayoftheday was one such site, offering games for free with fewer 'attachments' than sites like MPC. both ways would earn developers cash, either through the browser opening or in the case of the gamegiveawayoftheday, a small donation from the game giveaway team plus the potential for thousands of community members visiting the developers site and some of those purchasing other games by those developers. Basically it was a win win situation for all concerned i.e. the developer, the game giveaway site and the community members.
