my son loves these games. i told him i downloaded it and he wasn't waiting to play.....he did it right then. he is 11 and has this analytical mind and enjoys trying to figure out the angles to send the balls. i can see him using this, but he doesnt' even know he is doing it. when he was younger he just hit the ball.....now he tries his best to aim it with the paddle.

@24 I also downloaded, deleted, and downloaded again. Windows Vista showed all sound files bad. However Norton did NOT show or delete anything.
Apologies. This post landed on a previous game give away page. Tab button send me there somehow.

Unfortunately its too late to try any of the fixes I could suggest (i.e. trying a different file archiver to unpack the game; however you can get this game from MyPlayity. 'apparently' if you create your own shortcut from the installed exe file (instead of using the one created when installing the game) you don't have to keep unchecking the boxes that would otherwise install tool bars etc. Though make sure when you first install the game you do uncheck the boxes otherwise you may end up with toolbar and your home page hijacked.

Try uur graphics card drivers and direct x as well as trying to change the screen resolution. also try disabling various graphics options via right clicking /properties/compatibility from the games executable.

I downloaded the program (I LOVE THIS GAME) but when I tried to open it to play it I got a message saying "SOFTWARE_VERTEXPROCESSING was not initialized". I am a plug and play person so what does the above mean? and how can I get the game to work? (make the instructions easy please)

Had this game since '07. Pretty decent breakout.

Thanks GGOTD and Star Ashes for the game.

For the past 3 weeks I have been in and out with my Migraines. The last one started Thursday night and ended this morning. Sorry I missed your birthday, Oh Long Eared Furry One With Carrot Breath. Hope you feel better. We love you! Smooch, Smooch!

I downloaded this one before but had to delete it to clear some space for a project I was working on. Thanks for putting it back up. I'll have to set an alarm to go to bed so I don't sit up to late playing.

Downloaded game. Failed to run, showing all sound files bad. Norton identified the set up file as infected and removed. Please double check the security of this program. Thank you.

.............................Moderator Comment...................

This game has been downloaded by tens of thousands of users over the past few years and no one has complained of any infected files. As I've said many times the games given away here are tested with several different malare programs. There has never been a giveaway given away that has been infected ever since the game project started back in Dec 2006.

If the sound files are showing as bad then it's more than likely the download has become corrupted during the download phase. I suggest you try downloading it again.

If this game was infected we would be getting many complaints from the community, which hasn't happened. that points to a false positive.

Read the comment by pavid yesterday who gives a very erudite explanation of what the problem appears to be.

42 people obviously don't like to have fun! ;)

Thumbs up from me, the graphics are decent and it's got a few interesting power ups. Music is decent too. It's your average block breaker game but that's not a bad thing!

My only complaints are:

No 1280x800 resolution option

Runs well on older computers, have this installed on my 2006 Intel Core Duo 1.2ghz 2gb ram HP sub-notebook and works great.

First of all WhiteRabbit, hope you are feeling Better.

Installed on Vista Hm Prem, x64 just fine. Plays really well & a Fun Game. Be aware your Firewall does not lock it out, mine did (Comodo), I had sound but No Graphics ... and pushing ESC Button would not get me out of the game, I could Not even see my Desktop to get the Task Manager started ... so I had to reboot and redo my Firewall.

WhiteRabbit, can you get "Domino" and "Backgammon" games ... Pleassse!
Thanks! G!:)

Hi folks. I really like Breakout style games and I had one years ago that had boats on water, and pirates, etc, as a stage or stages. I have googled this every way I can think of, and have not found out what the name of the program could have been. Sorry to be off topic relative to this game, but I think many of us like Breakout style games, and the one I remember was very animated, bright, colorful and fun. I sure hope someone else can jog my old memory!

Thanks!

A fun game which is ideal for Arkanoid fans like me who just can't be bothered with those last few bricks each level (the game clears them out for you!). Probably more enjoyable for the younger folks, but I do like the persepctive and viewing angle on this one.

PS: Realore's free (platformer) game at present is Turtle Odyssey 2 and not the original Turtle Odyssey.

PPS: May I add my voice to the many of us here who hope Stephen is fully recovered soon?

#13: "... AMD raphics users please note there is a new CCC version out (12.4) with as optional downloads hydravision (yet to find out what that is) and an intergrated video converter..."

AMD/ATI very recently announced they're dropping the monthly driver release schedule. The 12.4 drivers were April's release -- At the end of May they released the 12.6 Beta, along with the win8 prev driver. Far as which is best, mileage varies as always, with some sticking with the 11.x or 12.1 versions, some preferring 12.4 over 12.6 etc.

Hydrovision is ATI's [rather old] virtual desktop app. The vid converter can be very fast, but the controls/options are minimal -- maybe check out A's converter which is more or less a front end for the same software - http://bluesky23.yu-nagi.com/en/index.html . Please bear in mind that the converter itself is quite limited -- it's not a replacement for something like today's GOTD -- & note that AMD/ATI have a separate Avivo download now called Media Codec Package, with files not included in their driverset.

I love breakout type games and this one was quite enjoyable. It was so enjoyable that I ended up downloading the other 2 Egypt themed breakout games in the series (Egyptball and Scaraball) from gametop.com.

My only complaint: I wish there were more levels...lots more levels.

I first downloaded "Egyptoid" (Egyptoid 2) from GOTD in 2007. Out Of the "Egypt" set of games this is my least favorite. It could be because of the outdated graphics. If that's the case, the graphics were outdated in 2007. For whatever reason, this game has never been able to hold my interest.

My favorite game in the "Egypt" series of games is "Egyptoball". I have played Egyptoball hundreds of times and hold the highest confirmed score in the Tri-State League.

Tonight I played the version of Egyptoid that I download in 2007 to compare with the present offering. It's been almost 5 years since I downloaded the first version. The game has not gotten any better-in fact as far as I can tell it's not changed it all.

Really good game this, especially to me who is not an expert like our Stephen, but loves arkanoids anyway. I have had it for years now, since the first GOTD giveaway and I still play it every now and then. It would be one of my favourites. PS I hope you are feeling a lot better now Stephen, the medical stuff in the forums has been fascinating and I can agree with a lot that Mikiem said.

Hi Nola, thanks, I am feeling better than last week, but not fully recovered yet. The bug knocked out the whole family. I should be back to normal by next week.

HiSergey, the above error message would indicate that you may need to update your direct X and possibly your graphis drivers. You can get the latest DX build from Microsoft and the latest drivers from your graphics chip manufacturer.

If you are not sure what your graphics card/chip is open up the direct X diagnostics panel by typing dxdiag into the search field at the bottom of the start menu.

Open up the display tab. you can see what manufacturer the chip you have is near the top of the information pane. Go to the manufacturers page and click on the button that takes you to the drivers page. Type in the details they ask you for (i.e. operating system and usually the model number of your graphics card. If you can't find all of the information use Speccy a free app from piriform (the developer of CCleaner). Speccy will give you more information about your graphics.

This has been given away several times now, but has remained a firm favorite with above average positive votes. The last time this was given away was last October 2011 where it received a positive 80% of 350 votes with 81 comments, then last year (Oct 2011) and again earlier that year back in March 2011 where it received a positive 76% out of 372 votes with 59 comments, then previously in Feb 07 when it received one of the highest positive ratings a game giveaway has ever received at 94% out of 203 votes (was 95% out of 195 earlier this year); only 12 community members voted thumbs down for this game (10 earlier this year). (Personally I don’t think it deserved such a high percentage because there have been much better arkanoids given away since the project started, IMO). There were 66 comments of which comment #33 by Game Seeker is probably the most useful to read; then it was given away again back in February 2008 where it received a decent positive 89% of 360 votes and 62 comments, and Dec 08 where it received a positive 68% of 667 votes. You can see all the comments made about this game via the following links. I’ve also included a link to Lockett’s forum review:

Installationl>:

The download size is 11.1Mb and once installed is 16.3Mb. The downloaded zip file unpacks to a read me that states the terms and conditions as well as a dual activation and set up file, which for those new to the game giveaway project means the game is automatically registered once the game is installed.. By default the game installs to:

C:\Games

There is no shortcut installed to the desktop or Start menu, so make sure you make a note of where the game installs to so that you can create a shortcut once the game has installed. The version we are getting today is v1.101. I don't have a copy of previous giveaways so don't know whether this is an update, however there is a significant difference between the size of the installed game from the size I referenced last time this was given away back in Dec 2008. The game plays on Win XP Pro 32 bit, Vista Home Premium 64 bit, and Win 7 Pro and Ultimate 64 bit versions.

The Gamel>:

This is a decent 3D arkanoid; though I wouldn’t place it in my top 20 list of arkanoids. Compared to some breakouts Egyptoid actually requires some skill to progress through the various temples of which there are eight because to destroy most bricks on some levels you have to make particular shots to be able to progress. Each temple comprises of eight levels, and to progress from one temple to the next you have to complete all levels within that temple. Besides the 64 temple levels there are also 8 secret levels that can only be opened by collecting special keys that look similar to the other symbols that you collect to unlock the magical powers. You cannot save levels while playing a specific temple until you’ve completed the temple and unlocked a new temple, then that particular temple can be replayed at any time, though you still have to start from the beginning of the level. All arkanoid fans will probably like this one despite the power ups being nothing special; except for the symbols that you have to collect that unlocks magic powers and secret levels. The ball physics allows for good control. So if you’re skilled with ball and bat you’ll need to play on the more difficult settings of which there are three.

Decent graphics add to a pleasurable game to play. I bought this quite some time ago and had forgotten about it, so thanks for reminding me.

The options menu allows you to adjust sound and music as well as toggle between full screen and windowed mode. You can also select several screen resolutions varying from the lowly 640x480x16 up to 1600x1200x32 and there are also three lighting settings, no light, normal light and advanced light. It appears that some people did have problems with some levels appearing black. This may be down to the type of graphics card you have as well as which setting you have it set on. If you do get the black screen problem, try changing this setting. Someone posted in the comments section previously that this definitely worked for them. See the problems section above for more fixes.

Conclusionl>:

Today’s arkanoid is worth 7 out of 10 in my opinion. It’s not the best, but good enough for me to have bought it before it was first given away. The only gripe I have with the game is having to complete all the levels within any one of the temples before your progress can be saved. As there are only 8 temples to explore, that means you’d have to play the game in eight or fewer sessions to complete the game. I much prefer to be able to save each level you play, and even better; being able to save a game mid-level. If you managed to get Egyptoid 2 you’ll find the game play similar though the original has a couple less power ups and the graphics aren’t as sharp, plus there are additional elements added to the gaming boards that make Egyptoid 2 more interesting to play.

If you don't like the music you can find the games music files in the Data/sounds folder. all files are ogg files so you'll have to use a audio converter to change any music files you wish to exchange the default music with. Make sure if you do this that you back up the original files and rename the replacements to the name of the files you are replacing. You can get several freeware audio converters via the Giveawayofthedays freeware section. there's a link to the freeware section on the front page of the giveaway site at the bottom of the page.

Similar Games available for freel>

You'll find loads of Arkanoid/breakouts HERE, HERE (Giveaway forums) and HERE (Caimans – almost 200 2D and 3D breakout games)

You can also download today’s game every day for free over at Gametop as well as several others such as A-Ball (which is also known as Nuclear Ball), Geometry Ball, Scaraball, Cosmoball plus others, though you will get your browser opening every time you shut the game down. Thankfully this is one of the games they have had for quite some time so there’s no tool bar or home page tick boxes to bother with, but just in case they've changed it since I last checked make sure when you are installing the game that you watch each step of the installation wizard.

You’ll also find at least 13 breakout titles over at MyPlayCity HERE, that now include several of Alawars breakouts such as all of the Strike Ball games (Strikeball, Strikeball 2 and Strikeball 3), as well as one of my early favorites called Actionball Deluxe and it's sequel Actionball 2; oh yeah and not forgetting the second Hyperballoid game, which in my opinion was a big improvement on the original despite the first one having a massive number of levels (over a thousand) with gorgeous graphics called (not surprisingly) Hyperballoid Complete Edition (or if you purchase it from Big fish Hyperballoid Gold edition) - the down side w.r.t. the original, was that even with the speed up power-ups, the ball used to go too slow for me, (however; GMMan did create a speed-up mod for me); there's also previous giveaways (though not Alawar games) such as Egypt Ball and Egyptian Ball as well as several others that you can download for free. I recommend all of the Alawar titles especially Hyperballoid 2 (Which has an editor for making more levels - there may be custom made levels to download via Alawars site, but I've not checked in some time) and the original Actionball Deluxe (the sequel also has upgradeable power-ups) and Strikeball 3 (The third in the series is similar to the earlier Magic Ball games {Magic Ball 2} but with better graphics and power ups that are also upgradeable, plus the game is slightly more challenging than any of the Magic Ball series (which for some reason Alawar decided to change the name from Magic Ball to Smashball Frenzy)). Unfortunately the best (IMO) arkanoid/breakouts such as Ricochet infinity, Acky's XP Breakout, Reaxxion and Shatter are not available for free via any of the free game sites apart from illegal ones. You can purchase Shatter from Steam for £6.99, though during the big sales over the summer and Christmas period and maybe thanksgiving you can get up to 75% off. Both Ricochet infinity and Acky's XP Breakout have editors and for the former thousands (literally well over 60 000) of downloadable levels for free. There are also free level packs for Acky's XP Breakout, but not to the same extent as Ricochet. you download the levels for Ricochet directly from the game and can upload your own creation from the game as well (which probably explains why there are so many - all the levels are graded for game play, graphics etc and get a score of A to D with +'s and -'s (for example B+; though the best of the best are starred as well)

Please do be aware that MyPlayCity have reintroduced toolbars and home page hijacks to their games, but these can be avoided by un-checking the appropriate boxes during installation, however every-time you open up the game you will need to un-check the boxes again as they are presented at every game start-up. Also when you close any of their games down, your browser is opened and directed to MyPlayCity's home page. This is innocuous so don’t worry. Closing the page ends any connection and nothing is downloaded.

A Request for helpl>:

Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average between 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of 'potential' cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away even more decent games.

Please leave some feedback once you’ve checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain what your reasons were for the feedback you post. You could also leave suggestions for improving the game, for example, this game could do with more block types for the levels editor, add more power-ups, describing the ones you think would be suitable, add some mini games (which seem all the rage in some arcade games now) or enable the user to be able to change the in game music easily.

Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to post a constructive comment.

Regards

Whiterabbit aka Stephen
