Have you ever noticed that Giveaway Of The Day with their regular file downloads almost ALWAYS has more thumbs down than thumbs up? I treasure the weekends when Game Giveaway Of The Day posts games on here. I feel that the administrators need to move Game Giveaway of the Day to a daily game and put the GOTD to weekends. Then they will treasure their files and not be so negative on the files thats given away freely. As far as GGOTD comments you always see more thumbs up than thumbs down.

Great game. This is a real gem that is very challenging, and adds some nice elements to the Arkanoid clone category.

Nice to know that great games like this get offered every so often for us newbies, rather than getting offered once and then being lost forever.

This game was actually quite good, up to the level where it was all black and there was no way to proceed except by pure stupid chance. Great graphics, good spin on the game concept. However, to buy it at $20 is too much, and the 'game o' chance' level pretty much makes it pointless (like the game offers any point anyway!).

Worth $5

I agree with you Dan. It actually amazes me how many community members do bitch. I was always taught that you should never slate a gift.
However; I do realize that constructive criticism is a good thing, especially if the developers take up the ideas that have been suggested. There are too many complaints about these games, not because they are rubbish, but because it’s not what they wanted or they already have them.
To be honest, apart from Double Games and most of Merscoms games, I’ve bought most of what’s been offered here, but I’ve never complained about it. Instead I try to find something useful to write about those games.
It’s no wonder the world is in the state its in; with the attitudes we see on these forums ( and these are mild compared to the giveaway comments).
Overall, Egyptoid is a very playable game. I’m sure the genre doesn’t appeal to everyone, but so long as a game is constructed in a professional manner, we shouldn’t be complaining, just because it didn’t tickle our fancy, lol.
Regards
WR

Geez, I can't believe that ANYONE could have the brass to bitch about FREE software!!!!! Best to stay away then. Not too much given away for free anywhere, in any category, so if it piques my interest I'll be happy to download the program, if not, so be it. I'm grateful for whatever I can use and still keep a few bucks in MY pocket.

Hi SciFiJim, Did you try the fixes mentioned in the comments above?

1) Restart the game once the game has activated.

2) Download the file from Realores site and manually delete the one installed via the Giveaway files, but under no account use the uninstaller otherwise you will lose the registry entries.

3) Get the latest version of DX9 (or 10 if you have Vista), though I think you still need DX9 for this.

4) Install the latest graphics and monitor drivers

I hope it's not too late . If so, try the free arkanoid/breakouts that I've linked to in the Arkanoid thread via the game discussion thread:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/2607

I highly recommend the Urse games Scaraball (aka Gem Ball) and A-Ball (aka Nuclear Ball) plus Elefuns Geometry Ball (aka Twinzoid). There are also seven more commercially available arkanoids available from Gametop (link to be found in the arkanoid thread) for fgree, though the ones I've mentioned by name are the best in my opinion. there are also several excellent freeware versions, that for freeware are actually very good.

regards

Whiterabbit

Hi BamaGrrl, no offence taken as I hope there wasn't any from my side. With little information about a person it's hard to assess their level of competence with computers, so as a general rule I'll assume minimal experience as it is still new to most of the world. That way, even if you didn't benefit from the advice, other may. I was when I noticed that you only had 1Gb of RAM, that I decided to write the simple advice as 1Gb is rather small by today's standards, and thought that with such a small amount (well relatively speaking) if you also had lots running in the background it could be a very good reason for the sluggishness. The game runs as smooth as silk on the two computers I've installed it onto, though the specs are much higher.

You didn't mention your graphics chip, which may also have something to do with the sluggishness.

Anyway, I do hope you sort the problem out because otherwise the game wouldn't be much fun.

WhiteRabbit re: post 65: I appreciate the instructions on how to turn off background processes, however, as an FYI, I *am* an IT professional. Certified half-a-dozen ways from Tuesday (and a MCP in W2K to boot) and employed in the field. I'm sure someone else who doesn't know these things will appreciate your advice. (And I don't mean that snarkily, either.) I don't tend to run a lot of programs; got into that habit during my Win98 days with a whopping 72MB of RAM.

I think the game would be enhanced by being able to adjust the mouse response; I've seen this in one or two similar games and appreciated being able to fine-tune the mouse.

I'm on dialup
and if I leave the accelerator enabled I get = Fatal Error - Key is invalid
and if I disable the accelerator I get = Activation module failed to connect

I also got a black screen with music when 1st ran, but No problem, I just shut it off, started again, and it ran perfectly then. I was assuming the GOTD page that triggers when we install anything caused it, NOT the game, & I do think that's what did it, as it came up just as game started. Love the game!
Thanks GOTD & Realore!

Sorry Joanne, I missed your earlier post. Vertex refers to graphics, usually vertex shaders, which means it has something to do with your graphics card and more probably your DX installation. Follow the link I've posted above which takes you to loads of links for downloading DirectX. You want DirectX9 tough if you have Vista ypu can use DirectX10. That should fix your problem.

Though check to see what the lighting is set on in the options menu. If you turn the lighting off altogether (by selecting no light) you don't need shaders and it may work without having to reinstall DX9. Either solution may work.

I already have this game from the last time it was offered and I still play it. It's a good one for just-before-bedtime, it's just hard enough to hold your interest but easy enough to be very relaxing. I have both versions from when they were offered and have never taken them off, kept them both. If you don't already have this one it's a good one to get.
Of course, my absolute fav of all the offerings was East Side Story. but it gets to be a saga.

Hi Kymme,

The dll file you have missing is part of the DX8 files. You can download directX for free.

You can find download site from the following link:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=download+DX8&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

though DX8 was a Win 98 ME directX version. Since XP DX9 has been used. anyway. Try installing DirsctX. Hopefully that should sort your problem out.

Alternatively you can get the dll file from the following link:

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?d3d8

btw, Carol, keep trying. I had a problem connnecting earlier.

So that's why I got a black screen. I needen't have bothered downloading the file from Realore. lol. Thanks Vampiro... :)

Whups! I see the one I lost was Egyptoid 2. So for me this IS a new one. I'm, for one of many, glad to get it. And voted for it.

To all those who complain about the type of games being released for free.

GET OVER IT.

These games are being released FOR FREE! Please note the last two words of the last sentence "FOR FREE!". THIS MEANS NO MONEY LOST IN THE PURSUIT OF FUN!

IF YOU DON'T WANT WHAT'S BEING OFFERED, THEN DON'T D/L IT. ALSO, DON'T B*TCH & MOAN ABOUT THE SELECTIONS BEING OFFERED. Something WILL show up one of these weekends that will be what you're looking for.

There's a lot of people who don't know about this place. I only discovered it in May of this year. So I welcome repeats of past offerings.

The only complaints I want to read about, is about the game offered:

If it won't load on people's machines, and what fixes it took to make it work. One of these days, I may have the same problem.

I don't mind too much if you just say "Thanks, but No Thanks". Maybe the game offered is too immature for your household. There are times I like to just check my brain in at the door and just have fun.

Whiterabbit aka Stephen, you shouldn't have to apologize for your multiple posts. You ARE being helpful. THANK YOU!

To 68
are you on 64 bit Vista or 32 bit Vista??
Anyhow I'm using 32 bit Vista and I noticed the black screen too
but that was because I launched the game direct after Install
so that the reg of the game had no time to go through so I did quit
the game and made the reg full and then Restarted the game and it
worked perfectly.
Try to reinstall and do not launch the game until full registration
with this site (Until you get the confirmation Page Up in your browser)

If you are on 64 Bit Vista it do not suport many games (yet)

But on my 32 bit Vista ,512 Graphic Card 4 Gig Ram and a Quad Core
AMD Processor it all worked.

Hope you can solve the Problem.

Just like some others here, all I got was a black screen with music. Sure would love to have this game, it's the first one that has appealed to me in a great while. It's a curiosity to me that only a few of us have this problem, others seem to have no problems at all. Hope to get it resolved today, as I do want the game.

Ok game. Vista HP. Only nit I see on first run is no mouse
slider. Paddle games need that. Wireless laser one not so smooth
as in others of this type. Might try reducing the display setting.
Thought I's played this before. Dif fields than before if I did
play it. Maybe was E3? This one looks less eye candy at first 2
levels than others but nice enough for free. Go Giants.
Thanks.

Hi Jdg_M3NT4L,
I think you are wrong about the differences between this version and that previously given away. I compared the last one with today's, which I'd not actually bothered to download until you mentioned that they were different because I have the one I bought from Reflexive before this was offered on the giveaway project the first time and I also installed this the last time it was given away because I was comparing them then and hadn't bothered to remove it. The music’s the same, the file size is the same and the levels are the same and so is the version number v1.101. I think you may be getting it mixed up with the second Egyptoid which in my opinion has a better look to it and more power ups.

With respect to the music, I neglected to mention that you can exchange the ogg files found via the following path:

C:\........\Egyptoid\data\sound where the ...... represents where you've installed the game to

Just look for the menu sound and theme files and exchange those for the music you would like, though you must convert your music to ogg and rename the files to mirror those you are replacing. You can find an audio converter in the freeware library. The link to the freeware library is at the bottom of the giveaways home page I think.

Oh yeah, when I installed today’s copy of Egyptoid, when it started up I also got a black screen, so I turned it off and manually deleted the folder so that the registry entries remained (ensuring the registration remains intact), then downloaded Egyptoid from Realore’s site (see link at the top of the comments section), installed that and the game played absolutely fine. So long as you don't use the uninstaller you can use the demo from Realore as the registration details we've got from the giveaway project work with the Realore demo.

To Bama Grrl,
With respect to the bat being a little sluggish; try turning off as many background processes as you can via the Task Manager (Cntl – Alt – Del). The ones you find next to the clock in the task bar are usually safe to turn off, and don’t require the task manager, just a right click and exit; though if your firewall is there, ensure it’s turned back on before you do any surfing. Turning these off will release valuable resources that are usually tied up by the background programs you have running. If you’ve downloaded and installed a lot of giveaways, this area is likely to be quite full. It’s amazing how quickly your system can get bogged down by installing all those programs.

There is a way of creating a profile so that when you first turn on your computer you can specify which profile you want to run. Each profile turns on the specific background programs you think you’ll use. It’s a very little used facility that isn’t that hard to set up via your configuration utility. This way you can set up profiles for Gaming, Work, Surfing etc. Though this isn’t the place to discus it. Try Googling it on the net and you’re bound to find loads of good tutorials.

Hi ToniW,

Yes it's older and the graphics are a little less clearer, but you get a whole different bunch of levels that makes it worth downloading. Egyptoid 2 isn't an updated version of Egyptoid, but an entirely new game.

and finally to Bonnie, thank you.

p.s.

I apologise for the multiple posts today, I've just been trying to be helpful.

Hi. Installed and works great under Windows Vista 64bit. Even though the name is the same and the core gameplay is also the same. Alot has changed with this release. New music, and the HUD has changed. I only played a few of the opening maps and they seem to be different as well. I like the updated graphics better than the previous version, However (IMHO) the music is not as interesting as it was the last time. I still have the earlier game on another machine and I may swap out music files. Not because the new music is that bad. I just liked the earlier music better. Overall Thumbs up. Thanks GGAOTD and Realore Software for another casual keeper!

I don't know if anybody else ran across this situation, so I thought I would mention it. Even though I use the mouse left handed, the menu arrow is right handed only. I noticed that it was pointing to the right when the menu wouldn't respond to my left clicks. Just thought I would mention this in case anybody else uses a mouse left handed. And Whiterabbit? I dislike whiners as much as the next guy but, some of them have a point. There hasn't been anything worth a download in months. Unless you are fairly new here or have had computer crash all the repeats do no good. I myself have been coming here for more than a year so I have seen it all before. There is nothing for me here anymore. And if by chance we do see something new, it is usually a Merscom game that is of marginal quality at best. A Merscom game is like getting a free calendar from your bank and every third month is missing. Yes, it is free but it is of more use if you line the bird cage with it.

Hey, no problems AFFI, glad to have been of assistance.

Hi Carol. Check the options menu and change the lighting to none. Also, try and install the game to another folder. I had the same problem the first time I installed it, but reinstalling it worked.

Hi Me again, when you say you had a system crash do you mean all the games were wiped off your hard drive? Many of the game giveaways are free standing, so if you still have the files you may find that they still work. If you don't, try recovering the files before you start installing more stuff on your D: drive.
