Thanks for the assist you guys! :) Just had to put the crystal in place and I was able to enter a different area. Have to say though, the game does turn quite dark towards the end :o - kinda has you wondering if the author/s wrote it from personal experience! Oooer!

Good idea - Berlin is wonderful - I have been there 3 or 4 times (I live in Switzerland).

Hope you also visited your brother while he lived in Poland - it must be beautiful there too.

It's true. When you have to use the language it works - if not you still can use English or draw a sketch ;-)

...........................Moderator Comment................................

Scuze the late reply, I tend not to check often once the giveaway is over. Yes, we visted Poland several times. We went into the Carpathian mountains for a skiing holiday that borders the Czech Republic, I'd never seen such deep snow, and everything looked like a picture postcard. I've also visted Switzerland when I lived in Germany. We went to the Rhinefall and also visted Zurich while we were staying in the Schwarzwald.

Oh Dear - it's really not easy to learn but give it a try - I would love to teach you but I can not explain everything even it's my mother tongue - I use it like automatic

.................................Moderator comment................................

My brother in law used to teach English as a foreign language and ended up in Poland about 15 years ago. He married a Polish lady, who didn't want to leave her family, so he basically moved to Poland and lived there until about six months ago, when his wife got a job as a pharmacy assistant somewhere in Germany; so they have now moved to Germany. We will be visiting them next Spring. That would be an ideal time to start my voyage of learning the language. There's nothing like being thrown in at the deep end.

We travelled to Poznan via Berlin just before my accident 10 years ago around the time when Germany was converting their Deutch Marks and Phennigs to Euro's and Cents. At the time you were able to you both and in combination (got a little confusing). I remember getting by at the airport, on the underground, the local buses, the train station and various shops with what little German I remembered while we were exploring Berlin for the day. (We had about nine hours between arriving at one of Berlins airports from Manchester airport to catching a train from Berlin to Poznan).

I would love to see that route (Berlin to Poznan) included in Train Simulator 2016. :)

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I like match 3 games, but after candy crush and particularly soda saga, I think they'll be a very hard act to follow. I'll keep checking in anyway to see what turns up here. Keep up the good work and kind offerings.

Downloaded and installed without problems on my ASUS Intel Core i5 Win10 Laptop. I've played this HOG for over an hour while doing some other things and still haven't figured out how to complete the house portion. I've gotten into the college but that's about it. I've watched one of the links above but it wasn't helpful.

It is an enjoyable and relaxing game (except for being stuck in place). I will not comment on the sounds nor the music as I usually play with all muted (and skip the dialogue).

Thanks to Alawar Entertainment and Game Giveaway of the Day for the game today.

Thank you for the game. Downloaded and set up just fine. First game I have finished on the day of the giveaway.

It is pretty but at first I was very frustrated and upset about not having a map to at least see if I was done with a location. Then I found out the hint button pointed to things to do in the room if I had everything I needed or not. Arrggg.

Then slowly I figured things out. I figure this is an old game since it has an audio cassette recorder, a CRT computer, and a pay phone (wow haven't seen one of those in ages). In the hidden Object sections I noticed that the words would glow when I was near the object. Since they were pretty easy, it wasn't as useful as a map but it was a nice touch and I used it a few times. It saved on frustration levels.

The game was very step by step with few places to gather multiple things. I worked out what the next step was by what I had in my inventory. I only needed a walkthrough for one clue because I figure out what connected with what. I did use it a couple of other times to see if something I guessed was correct or if it was coming later in the game.

At the end of it all, I enjoyed the game. I just needed to reset my ideas on the game play. I have started to get tired of HOGs but this was a nice level for me. Thanks again.

Three different times I downloaded this game and each time I get this error message "The archive is either in unknown format or damaged"
Methods tried
Virus protection on
Virus protection off during unzipping and install
Virus protection off for download, unzipping and install
And still will not install I am on windows 10

.........................Moderator Comment...........................

Hi Mike, have you checked the FAQ's thread that i link to in the problems section of my review :?: see comment 1 for the link.

There are other fixes that may sort the issue you have, for example, try rebooting your modem/router, make sure you have IE 8 or higher running in the background and make sure it's set to online working. Also check your event log immediately after trying to unpack. Another possibility is the unzipper you are using. i've had problems a few times where I got the same message. When I used a different file archiver it unpacked the program. I've listed several free archivers in the FAQ's thread. :)

Michelle,
I have been here since 2009 or 10 and have never had a problem here on Game Giveaway of the Day. I cannot say that about the sister site giveawayoftheday.com but here I can, just as Whiterabbit-uk always says.
When they first started using the new wrapper years back, I used an installation monitoring program and can confirm that after the installation the "trojan" (as antivirus programs are calling it) is automatically removed. The installation is safe (or I wouldn't be suggesting anybody turn off their antivirus program myself!). The trojan was kind of sort of a trojan (best I recall many years ago when I researched it) but it's modified for (G)GOTD and it automatically removes itself and causes no further infection or harm. Here is a little description of it on a discussion forum:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r21106446-Is-Themida-a-legitimate-threat
Themida is a software protection product designed to prevent software from being "cracked" and does use encryption, therefore, is very difficult for any anti-virus to confirm one way or another if its malware. Un-fortunately, Themida is highly used by virus writers, keylogger writers, etc., to concel their malware.
So, all in all no one can actually be absolutely certain that when Themida is detected it is malware or a legit product....its your call.

That's why antivirus programs flag it and want to remove it...

.........................Moderator Comment...........................

Thanks for the simple expalanation Avid Gamer, I may add that to the FAQ's as it's a useful definition of Themida. Nice one.. Tried to give one myself last week, though I called it a type of carrier that protects the program inside. :)

Download the game via several unzip programs? I recommend clicking "Save" when prompted, not "open" if that's what you're doing...

Try this:
1. Disable any antivirus/anti-malware software you have. Wait 15 minutes as everyone has suggested. Then:
2. Download the game using the download link above, making sure to click on "Save" and *not* "open". After it successfully downloads open the folder containing the game zip file and extract *all files* (the installer CANNOT/will not install the game if you do not choose to extract ALL files!) to a folder of your choice (I just have it unzip into a folder on my desktop).
3. I haven't used Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or 10 much so I'm not familiar with those but on my old Vista laptop I seem to recall having to right-click on the "exe" file on some installers and choose "Run as Administrator" (or something like that); then if the UAC prompts you tell it to allow the installer. Just double-clicking on the "setup.exe" file may be sufficient?
4. The game will hopefully now install correctly. After installation remember to turn all antivirus, etc. programs back on that you turned off temporarily!

I've just downloaded it from MyPlayCity and my Windows gave me an exclusion. I had to do the Administration sign in to okay it. Weird. Must be the game. Have no idea. I have Malwarebytes, Avast, Ccleaner and just recently installed Synei System Utilities a few weeks ago. All I am saying is I have never had this happened to me before and the last game installed fine. I have had download issues before but never a security issue. Thanks.

Firstly I would like to apologize for the expletives, secondly I think you are wrong. This came up again and wanted to enter my NVIDIA folder. Just now I had only come onto this site and scrolled down for any replies from my post last night and Malwarebytes came up straight away. Last night it came up when I was downloading the game. I had wondered why it was going to take 4hrs and 30m to download a 300MB file. So I was like ... yeah, this ain't right and so stopped it and tried to do it again and that's when I got the first Web Exclusion. It is either the game or your website. All my other websites that I go to do not show this checkip.dyndns.org. I have cleaned and re-cleaned this computer twice and all was cleared. Updated everything that needs updating. The minute I come to GGOTD, up comes Malwarebytes. I am going to do another clean and then download from MyPlayCity. This time. I do hope it doesn't happen for next weeks game.

.........................Moderator Comment...........................

Hi again Suzanne, firsty thank you for the apology regarding the abreviated expletive. i actually forgot to dlete it initially.

anwya, there has been well over 8 thousand downloads of this game and only a few community members have reported the problem, tohugh others already know that it's the Themida based file that's causing the problem. Reqd Avid gamers explanation of what Themida is and why it's often tagged as malware here . I can assure you that neither the game or this site are infected with any malware. we have had literally millions of downloads since the game giveaway started 8 years ago and no game has ever been infected. Simply put your malwarebytes is seeing the themida wrapped setup.gcd file as a threat becasue themida based code is actually used to carry infections, but in this case it is the actual game installation. It was used because unscrupulous community members hacked the original wrapper and put the games up on peer to peer sites and also posted how to do it on you tube videos. The giveaway team had to do something becasue it would have compromised the site as developers would stop giving games to a site that allowed the games to be ripped off.

Check through all of the various game comments over the last 8 years you wont find one post saying they have an infected computer due to installing a game giveaway. you will se plenty of community members saying the same thing as you. But they were wrong and sop are you.

If you don't trust this site, then don't download the game, but it will be your loss. A lot of the games given away here can also be found on at least one of the free game sites such as MyPlayCity, Gametop and FreeGamePick as well as others (I've listed the safe ones in my review above). The main difference between the game giveaway version and the versions given away elsewhere is that there's no checkboxes to worry about that if you forget to check will see you having toolbars added to your browser, your browser changed, your home page changed etc and everytime you shut a game down from one of those sites it will open your browser to the home page of that site. Nothing seriously wrong with any of those, but they can be an annoyance. The game giveaways are clean and safe.

Whatever you decide, I do hope later games don't gove you the same trouble, but I suspect they will until you configure your anti malware to allow the giveaway wrapper to be unwrapped.:)

The file took over an hour to load, but the game would not install. I use AVG antivirus installed, but nothing popped up that it was being blocked. After clicking unzip and install, it won't install at all. This has happened only once before several months ago and I have not had any problems since then until today.

Graphics and gameplay are very good. The subject matter is depressing, ghosts of children, but that's part of the story.

The help function is almost useless. For example, in the hall of a house is some loose wallpaper. Clicking on it says that you need something sharp to cut it. I haven't found anything sharp yet. Activating help points to the spot where I can do nothing. There are other spots that need something not yet found but help keeps sending me there. Useless. I'm going to search for a walkthrough.

Other than the help function, I'm enjoying the game.

I feel your pain, Sunnaze. I have the same problem. The game is beautifully made except for this. I can get into the house, the college, and the train staion but can't find any way to move forward. I have a knife but no idea where to use it and like you, when I use the hint button, it sends me back and forth to places where things need to be done but I don't have the items to do them. A very serious flaw, in my opinion. I can't find any active areas anywhere. Fortunately, I reserved my thumb until I tried it out so I gave it a thumbs down, for what it's worth. Too bad, because I like this type of game and this one is otherwise very well-made. But that drawback takes the fun out of it. I'll try it a little longer, but I think I'll be deleting this one.

I tried several times to install this game. It's the kind I love playing. It downloaded just fine and when I tried to install it, I got a large red message saying it had a trojan virus in it and stopped the installation. I tried it a couple of times but my computer will not allow it to install. I looked up the name of the trojan that it says it is, and it is a real virus. I would like to install this game but I can't. Maybe next time..

..............................Moderator comment............................

Hi Michelle,

The game isn't infected with that malware. What your security is picking up is the Themida based code in the setup.gcd file that is included to stop hackers from stealing the game, it's often mistaken for malware becasue some malware uses similar code.

Loads of community members have had the same problem and found turning off their security temporarily will allow the game to be installed. I can assure you the game is not infected. The giveaway team has given away well over a thousand games since they started 8 years ago and no game has ever been infected despite some community members getting these warnings regularily.

It's up to you whether or not to turn off your security, at least until the game is installed, though you could try configuring your security to accept the file or failing that download the version found over at MyPlayCity (see the link in my recview at comment number 1)). If you do download the MyPlayCity version, please ensure you uncheck the check boxes during installation otherwise you may find your home page or your browser has changed, or you may even have tool bars installed.

Your anti-malware suite is picking up a false positive. Read other comments here; community members are turning off their security to get the game installed. If there was a real virus we would have received literally hundreds of complaints from the community. Thousands download these games every week. It's strange that only a few community members are reporting this. Well no, it's not, because there is no virus.

let us know what you decide, you won't regret getting this game, especially if you are into HOG's, horror and suspense :)

The game unpacked fine with 7zip (open source zip/unzip program) to the usual three files. After disabling realtime protecting on Avira antivirus, I selected the setup.exe program to run as administrator. The game installer allowed me to choose where to put the game so I put it where I wanted and got a success message after all was finished. After re-activating Avira, I started the game to review it for function. You must have greater than 1024x768 resolution to play in windowed mode, and I don't, so it runs fullscreen. I can use my own cursor however, which is good because for some reason, custom cursors run slowly and often are too large for my taste. Trying out the game, I have to say the colors are a bit dark, making it hard to see enough of the items on the screen. I don't recommend this game for people with impaired vision. Gameplay, for the short time I tried it, was OK. These kinds of themes don't depress me because I know it's all a fantasy of someone's mind, and besides, I still watch some horror movies and those are a lot more involved than most games. So, just based on the theme, I would not tell people not to try this game. It's more about how hard it is to see items in the screen because it uses a lot of dark colors and similar colors so that it's harder to pick sort of dark objects from slightly darker backgrounds. I think I would prefer dark objects on lighter backgrounds and that's all I have to say in my review.

I read your comments late yesterday -- don't know if my late reply was posted or if you read it Jamie. My suggestion is/was to post in the forum so maybe things can get sorted out as WR would say, before the next time you want to grab one of the GOTD games.

One of the problems folks face with running an older version of Windows, is that much of the older code that made the web work is being removed, because in many cases that old code has vulnerabilities making it easier for hackers & such to do bad things. Older versions of Windows, e.g. XP, were designed when that older code was current -- that's why WR suggested you make sure you were running ie8.

In one of your posts yesterday, Jamie, it sounded like your installation or upgrade to ie8 may not have been complete. If you posted in the forum maybe Chris would have some suggestions on how to make sure, or you might try removing Internet Explorer [as possible] & reinstalling ie8, or resetting ie8 etc.

Thanks for review & comments. Worth a shot for something bit different. Agree that having a dark edge is worthy variation from usual HOG style. Don't mind the ease of play since not a time devoted player so casual is appealing.
Still working through The 39 Steps bit by bit. Really catching like a good book so don't want it to end too fast.
Maybe other genres next week.

Yeah, I know it's not perfect. I keep meaning to re learn German. I lived near Krefeld for 3 years, and although I could get by when shopping and having to travel, I never became fluent. I have several german courses, a fantastic German/English dictionary, several books written in German and even some comics, which I believe can help you to learn the basics. I just never seem to have the time, and when I do the inclination, even though I really want to relearn the language. I loved living there back in the late 70's.

A good many times it's not the game developer's, nor the GOTD team's fault. Many [most?] times if/when a game that works for most won't run on your device, 'bout all you can do is be thankful if you didn't pay anything for it, & move on, trying another game.

Some of the games & the game engines they use are a bit old, so may not work with a few systems, other installed software, &/or Windows 10. Of course newer games for free are a bit rare -- there's much less incentive for a company to give away a game that's still selling well.

A related potential issue is the graphics hardware on many PCs & a good many laptops... In many of those cases the graphics chip is part of the CPU. That's technology that is still rapidly evolving, e.g. Intel CPUs with builtin graphics have made big leaps forward with each of the last several generations. Games can make requests of this graphics hardware that it cannot deliver, or deliver as expected, while the necessary hardware driver software may not always be compatible, especially if it uses tricks to make up for a lack of capabilities.

..............................Moderator comment................................

That's a good point Mike, I rarely updated my graphic drivers until I got into games in a big way and seem to remember having problems running some games ocassionally, especially ones with better graphics (I'm talking late 90's to early 2000's). Now I keep them updated using NVidia's GEForce experience, which informs me when a new graphics driver is available and also keeps many of my games configured for optimal working. Apart from a couple of games given away I've not had any problems playiong any games (one was a weird breakout that featured two smiley faced characters and had a breakout arena that moved oddly and occasionally you'd get zoomed in to the ball that many had problems playing = can't remeber the name of it now. :) . It was a pre XP game and didn't work on XP only Win 98.

Although the kindness of gamegiveawayoftheday staff and all software contributors is appreciated. How about some more arcadey style games being appropriated a bit more often. I know that a significant amount of gamers do enjoy these kind of games. But they are far too overrepresented nowadays on this site. I'd say about 1 in 10 of the many varied gamers with varied tastes that I know ever actually bother with this particular genre at all.

..............................Moderator Comment................................

Hi Tim,

I'd love to see more shmups, tower defense, strategy, shooters, rpg's, sim's, platformers and breakouts, but sadly we can only get a hold of what the distributors are willing to give. As mentioned yesterday, the genre's we most often see are those that were popular over the preceeding few years before we get them, for example, a few years ago we were getting loads of Match 3's, then it was Time Managemeny games, now it's Hidden Object, nothing actually wrong with any of those genre's apart from oversubscription here.

There has been a massive increase in a whole raft of genres released under the general heading of Indie Games over the last few years, lets hope they filter down to the game giveaway site soon as there are some fantastic titles available that aren't Match3, TM or HOG games. :)

Sadly, whenever we have had more unusual and sometimes hard to categorize and different games, they have been given short shrift by this community.

Guess I spoke up too quickly. I couldn't close the game so I went to Task Manager to close it. When I clicked to close it, a pop-up said that there were capability issues with the game and that they had been resolved and take effect when the game is opened again. I opened the game again and it picked up where I had left off and started working again. Thanks anyway.

I love these games. The ones like this that tend to be depressing, I just don't get into it. I skip the dialogue and pay attention only to the finding and solving. With this one though I have an issue. I got into the first house and after collecting a few objects, I got this message: "Access violation at address 004051DA in module 'gives the .exe name'. Read of address 0CC4FF0C.". I went to the Q&A section as suggested but didn't find this answer. Any help?

I was having same problem then realized Norton was removing the "threat"...you might check your quarantine to see if it is in there. I have to disable NAV for 15 minutes until game is installed.

Later edit: I started the game over and worked back up to the prison and the files, and this time got the files in a different order, and the 7th one registered and I was able to complete that part fine.

I do think the HOGs are VERY easy. A few (very few) of the finds in yesterday's game seemed a tad difficult to find (blending in) but I think I'd rather have a couple of stumpers than such easy ones as in today's game. Overall, though, I'm actually enjoying killing some time with this one. Just would like a bit more challenge or brain power, not just stamina :).

To those of you who can not install the game:

If you are using Norton then you have to disable auto-protect for 15 minutes. Easy to do but remember to turn it back on afterwards.

I'm betting Norton is the cause of your troubles because it has suddenly taken a severe disliking to the game wrapper. Understandable because it is trying to hide what is in there.

If you don't, Norton will just stall your installation exactly like you describe.

Downloaded on Win 7.. no problems. No problems with install. Clicked on game. Started tutorial and then exited that before it finished. Game continued. Everything working as it should. Really cool graphics. I do like spooky dark games on occasion. My opinion only. Glad to have one with a little bit of spookiness to it. Thanks GOTD and Alawar

Disabled 'intrusion protection' in Norton and game downloaded and installed just fine. Looking forward to playing. Thanks GGOTD for all you do.

Thanks! Yesterday's adventure/HOG/puzzles game (my favorite genre) turned out to be more fun and more challenge than I initially thought, and this one (downloaded VERY slowly but installed fine on Win 8.l) turned out to be way frustrating (though the HOGs were too easy): In the prison, I collected SEVEN files (the number you need) but the inventory only showed 6. Therefore, I couldn't put them in the dossier and continue. Thinking I'd somehow missed one, I looked at the walkthrough and noted the position of each file and went back to those locations to see if somehow I'd not picked up the file, but all were collected. Checked three times. So had to end the game.

On another note, I'm always surprised when downloading super-early in the morning seems to be so slow---I guess I'm not the only pathologically early rise out there :). Or maybe the server just has difficulty functioning this early in the morning!

I had problems last week and today (didn't try to get yesterday's game) similar to what other people reported. It would activate but wouldn't install the game. As suggested above, I turned off my antivirus (AVG) and it worked fine. Thanks for the game!

PS - sorry, I forgot to mention 2 things...I did disable security software, and I did post something in the forums a while back as well...I will re-post there today though...I forgot that you'd prefer that we post to tech/forums rather than here - so sorry & oops! ~ Susan

I still cannot download any games, I have tried ALL suggested fixes on FAQ's and those found on the web...I have asked here for help now at least 3x and I know you are busy, and besides one idea to which I quickly tried & replied that it didn't help, no one has really replied with any other help or suggestions. Without reiterating every word I've previously posted, I have d/l the game via several unzip programs (7-zip, DownThemAll, etc) and when I try to install it, I get a quick flash of something and then nothing happens. Believe me, I've tried everything (downloading software that it turns out I didn't need!) so unfortunately, I will have to stop visiting your site after coming here since its inception, I think. Whiterabbit, I just want to say thank you for all the other countless hours of joy and fun I've had with the myriad of games I've acquired over the years...I am so so sad I can't be a part of the weekend fun anymore, but I just don't know what else to try or do. No one else seems to have my issues I guess. It just suddenly changed a few months ago and I haven't been able to d/l games since. (Running Win7) Thanks again, GGOTD - I will miss you.

Whew! I'm beginning to regret having given this a thumbs-up to be honest! I can't get past the house section of the game! When I use the hint button, it just keeps sending me back and forth between the bedroom and the hallway, but there is nothing active at all that I can do in either place! At one point, after having gotten the innocent soul, I found myself transported back to the courtyard and thought I'd now be able to go into one of the other places, but nope, the only place I can enter is still the house, and even the hint button sends me back there. Can't be bothered wasting much more time on it.

Hi Sunnaze, please 'excuse the very late reply, I missed your comment when I moderated this section earlier; I was distracted.

Maybe try one of the walkthroughs (see below) just to get past the place you are stuck.
Walkthroughs:
You can see walkthroughs of the game HERE and HERE

Installed windows 10 but had to turn off PC Manager because it kept putting the setup.exe file in quarantine. Never had to do that with Alawar games before. But it works just fine. :-)

I see what you're saying, but it would be a very dull world if we all enojyed the exact same things, wouldn't it? Personally, I don't like "cutesy" games like Gardenscapes and Barn Yarn, or anything really where the aim is to do "improvements" to something; but if YOU do, then great and I'm pleased for you. But they bore the pants off me! Too much like a time-management game.

Today's game (though I don't like gory games) does have its appeal and sounds intriguing.

.................................Moderator Comment................................

Time Management games, aarrgh, my worst nightmare, lol. It's the only genre I really dislike, though there are a few exceptions such as the Farm Frenzy games, but I think i'm a little biased over those as I beta tested all of the early ones. I do think they did the franchise to death though as all of them are basically reskins of the same game.

As for what you said about the world being a dull place if....., of course you are absolutely right. The world would become very stale if we all went for the same things, variety is the spice of life. :)

I've still not got around to adding to my long reply yesterday.
Will do so before the day is out. (If I remember) :)
