I am a high 1100 - low 1200 chess player. I got this for my kids to learn chess thinking that "Easy" was more than just a catchy name. Waaaay to hard to call itself easy. Finally, after about 6 tries I was about to win and it crashed. It's done that about 4 times now. Deleted.

The chess that comes pre-installed with Windows Vista is far better than this.

A chess game that crashes whenever you're winning. Yup, that's really great. So great in fact that there were still 90 people giving it thumbs up. I guess they did that because they were just glad that it wasn't match 3 game.

I have yet to see a chess game on here that is really up to par. The previous one offered was made by someone who didn't understand, know or loved the game. This one has bad 3D (a hint, most chess players don't care for the show and dance of 3D) and a bad chess engine.

My recommendation : don't waste your time

Dern, yes, dern. I was longing to see Chess on here eventually. However, after reading the reviews and several of the negative evaulations complementing another's disappointments (such as the errors), and also since the company flatters itself deceptively (a dead give away its crap some where eventually in the game/product) I will downcastfully pass on downloading.

**I so hope other Chess games and even other *BRAIN exercise* games will be offered on here for us dorks and geeks, teehee. ;o)(Hey, some of us prefer interaction via the computer vs passively watching TV and movies. Go figure!)

*All that being said, and though late in posting, I seek Chess players' opinions. I have Chessmaster 9000 and 10th Ed. I also have Fritz. WHICH is better for the newbie??? You may email me if you like at dr.einstein at bigstring.com (put it together plz). Both are big loads but I don't know which to start for my daughter. I can only play with a comp and its not something I'd flatter even myself with, lol. Hence, I can't really be the judge if I don't play advanced enough. Thanks!

And thanks GOTD and Fly. We still appreciate the participation even if we wouldn't download the product! Cheers!

Thank you for today's game offer --- my husband loves chess. The download and setup took a while = had to locate the file. Would be really great if this company provided a desk-top shortcut within its downloads. The game splays fine on my Windows XP, but since I am not a good player, I haven't won a game yet. Thanks for all the variety in games lately.

I downloaded and unzipped the program. There is no install as usual from this publisher. The game is OK. I played a few games to check it out. I'm not a chess master but I found the game interesting. I would give the game a thumbs up. That being said I would like if GGAOTD could move on from this publisher and give us someone else. It annoys me that Fly Games has no home page to link to. How can one check up on them? Also I think that a publisher that can't come up with an installation process and instead relys on an unzip process must be doing something wrong. That is just my thoughts.

Okay, it's a pretty neat looking game, BUT....... it can't seem to solve the most basic mate in two for black problem: I.E. 1 f2-f3 , e7-e5 2 g2-g4 , d8-h4 mate.

Otherwise it's fun to play around with. :D

Interesting,

Loaded and plays well on my Windows XP Home SP2

Can not find vendor anyplace, It lacks very little to make it very viable for the market... Nothing really to detract from play, it seems to be fine... At least for a duffer like me.

Most welcome would have been a working help section, and access to determine what mp3 song I wanted to play, not default is No MP3...
Not much to detract from a good and nicely designed game...

Thanks for a good chess game, Would be interested to find the actual vendor, and to see if they have a web site..

Once again, great offering, I am A Happy Camper !

Bingo.

P.S. Would be happy to know if anyone can find out more...

@All,

The free Indeo codec is not the latest version (#7, #12 Jason C. & #20) and not good enough for this game. Latest version is only on commercial base. So much for a free game.
Win XP / SP2 and some security settings have compatibility problems with Indeo Codec:

http://blogs.msdn.com/sanpil/archive/2004/11/17/259303.aspx

There must be more people heving this problem.

To #14 (GEMINI):
I agree with that, but I wouldn't have typed it so loudly. Most, if not all, of the games offered here are older games and not compatible with Vista. The minimum requirements don't even list Vista, yet Vista users don't read that and then they complain that the game doesn't work for them. If they would read that first, they'd save themselves a lot of headache trying to get the game to work and save the space in user comments complaining they can't get the game to work on Vista.

Oh, well. What can you do?

Nice little chess-prog, but very poor release.
Advanced player will use a better prog, this one is just for beginners. But beginners would like to have some point of support. In the left corner you'll see a menu item called "help". MCI-Error: Helpfile not available. And then: EASY CHESS - NOT FOR SALE OUTSIDE HOLLAND.
So everyone outside HOLLAND (or the whole netherlands?) has to get this game for free, not only today. Yust thinking about the sense...

Thanks for this game.

There have been some really good and varied games here lately.
Now all I need is to find some time to play them.

Only Question is, however... Why is there no icon produced with the game anymore?
I always have to search and find then move the new folder onto my desktop. (There must be an easier way, but I'm not all that techy).
I've found that if I don't move the whole folder onto the desktop, the game won't run, and I get an error message. So I can't put an icon on just a 'folder' image.

Can you bring back the icons please?

Ta.

The screenshots made me think this could be a tidy and rather powerful chess software. But alas! Forget about all that what's being said in the blurb which actually turns out to be one of the most disappointing and hypocritical games offered here since Dec. 2006.
My strong advice: DON'T DOWNLOAD THIS CRAP!!
"Advanced chess engine", "powerful chess simulator", "Grand Master Chess engine". Absolute nonsense. I've just played three matches with White and instead of "thinking", i.e. performing calculation processes, the AI opponent behaved beginner-like moving almost without any delay as if it were a match of 5 minutes ("blitz").
Easily I WOULD HAVE won all 3 matches but ... hey, Fly games, are you kidding? ... every time the game CRASHED showing a read error 1 or 2 moves before checkmate. By means of that software-sided manipulation (deus ex machina?) it's indeed quite difficult to gain a positive score against such a con opponent.

That said, the 3D graphics aren't near state of the art. Much too small (no way of resizing/zooming) and again as it had been the case with "Grand Master Chess", giveaway of August 5th 2007, using a fix angle which is totally inappropriate since you have no sufficient view onto the board, onto all the 64 squares.
If you then try the 2D view what you've got to do after all if you want to play this game at all, you will soon get problems distinguishing the chess pieces from one another because they are simply designed way too similar.
Going to preferences there's hardly any option you can edit you would like to. No different colours of pieces, squares, background, no different design of pieces or of the board. Nothing of any use.

So, if you intend to enjoy for FREE (both Fritz and Rybka are commercial programs/engines) all that what this game's developers have left aside (probably weren't able to effect) take a look at jose-chess.sourceforge.net. There you'll be delighted with a really superb chess software not only playing extremely strong but providing lots of designs and other options.
It could be everything fine with jose but unfortunately the fly in the ointment here is a bug occurring very often that the game freezes and you have to change the chess engine in order to go on (which is neither fun nor a normal gameplay anymore, of course ). On the jose website a rumour has been aroused that the project had been abandoned by the author. Total standstill.

A Very good little game. Plays well, and looks very nice overall. Would be a little nicer if the 3D board display was bigger though, and if was multiple styles of chess pieces to choose from... but otherwise a great little game. Thanks GGAOTD :-)

I installed it and for some reason Vista doesn't like it.
It would not run past the intro movie, it kept giving me jpeg errors from the getgo and I couldn't get it to play - even in compatibility mode.

I think I'll pass on this one.
Still - I think it's great to have a chess game!

Keep up the great giveaways!

Why does the homepage link to this very page?

Also who ever writes up the descriptions might want to learn english, or at least get it proofread. Oh, and maybe a reality check.

"It is the *most* powerful chess simulator available on a personal computer."

Assuming that was what was meant, I find that highly unlikely given the price and the relative unknown/small publisher.

Concerning the UI, why would you waste so much screen real estate in 3D mode? Zoom in on the pieces so you can see them, and move the menues around the board (above or below seems like a good idea).

The most important information in a chess game, should be the pieces/board, not the menues, options, and whatever else they put in there.

Installation:

The downloaded zip file weigh in at 2.29Mb and when installed is still less than 3Mb. The activation module is combined with the set up file. Unfortunately there are no desktop or start menu shortcuts installed. For those who aren’t sure how to go about creating shortcuts follow the link below to a thread in the forums that deals with this oversight.

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/2594?replies=1

The game

The game looks solid enough, decent graphics, though in the 3D isometric view it can be a little hard moving your pieces as you need to grab them properly to be able to make the move. The 2D view seems much more user friendly.

I’m no chess master, so really cannot judge whether the game play is good enough as it’s been over 10 years since I last played a game of chess; though from the limited amount of time I’ve played it, it seems reasonable enough. It is after all an arcade version of the game. Considering I have an electronic chess board (that I bought for my son hoping to inspire him to play the game) that when new cost well over the equivalent of $200, this is great little game.

Conclusion

It’s playable so I’ll be keeping it. I much prefer the 2D view though because it’s easier to make your moves. Perhaps the overall visual quality is too polished and lacks texture. For example the knight almost hides the pawns in front of it as everything seems to blend into the overall color scheme. You’ll see what I mean when you’ve installed it yourselves.

I can’t really score this without spending all day testing the game out so will hopefully lave that to Locket who usually posts his review later today.

Been a while since I played computer chess. I own Chessmaster...for the Apple IIGS! LOL. It's collecting dust along with the machine, somewhere. There are simulators online where you can play old apple games for free. Was a great looking app for its time. (Zany Golf also a great minigolf)

Anyhow, I will give this a try

Interesting chess game. It's quite intelligent: I had to do only one more move to make checkmate, and then the program gives an error message, and leaves the program. An original way to resign! It seems to me the program is almost human: it can't stand it's loss. By the way: the graphics are difficult to play easy 3d. But it refused a pawn offer correctly, so it's not a weak program. So in a scale from 0-10 I give the program 8 points.
