#57 and others that had this replace OLEAUT32.DLL with an incompatible version, google SFC (System File Checker) it isprt of your OS maintianace tools, it is mentioned in help files and on MS knowledgbase articles. You simply need to use it to restore the original version of the file in question. You will probably need the original install CD or files. Just run SFC from the RUN box and select Extract one file from instalation disk, type in or browse to the oleaut32.dll file and hit start, ensure destination is your windows\system folder and the Restore From box has the win98 folder of your install CD dataset. If you are fortunate then your system will once again work, and cubedrift may well work with the proper version of the file.

Oh! Perhaps I should have added the following:
When it prompts you to overwrite newer files, make sure you click YES for each file (not "No" or "No to all"). This will replace all of the 3.50 DLLs from XP with older versions compatible with Windows 98.

To Paulie and Tomcat: This link might help (I hope). It helped my sister who had a problem with OLEAUT32.dll with another program that nearly ruined our Windows98 too. It's a Microsoft patch; this is the direct link:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/msninvestor/Patch/1.0/WIN98/EN-US/mcrepair.exe

Sure hope it helps.

Have Windows 98 on an old computer. DL'd this game to it and installed. Now I get a error window stating that "OLEAUT32.DLL file cannot start. Check the file to determine the problem." This has affected my OS. I cannot start many programs or even show the directory without right-clicking START and Explore. I can not even uninstall this program.

As in #54, this one caused my whole system to be un-useable. The file was OLEAUT32.dll. I'm in a world of hurt now, Had good luck with downloads until that one. Now have no computer until I can enter my product code (from 9 yrs. ago purchase) & I think I lost everything on the HD.

I was under the impression these games were full games and not demos, so I was not impressed with this one.

I don't think I'll ever install another game from this developer, as this one replaced a system dll with a non-functional version and left my (supposedly compatible) Win 98 machine horribly unstable. Fortunately, I had a backup and didn't need to completely reinstall my OS.

This really is a GREAT GAME!
Wow, so many nice and positive comments on the page too...amazing!
I still have this from last time so I won't be using GOTD's bandwidth today but nice to see it offered again for those that haven't tried this one.
A brilliant choice!

And all this for free. :-)
Why is game.giveaway not in the last holidays ?

@Rob: Do you run aktivate.exe before you run setup.exe?

I downloaded the game, but during the install the lisense says it's a trial version. Isn't this supposed to be the full game? If it is, you need to make sure the lisense accurately portays that fact. Lisesnes are restrictive enough already.

I would like to give Kudos to GAOTD. All you people who complain about the 'same reruns' and the 'same old stuff' and criticizing them because the game doesn't live up to your expectations or just plain doesn't work on your current OS, really need to either keep it to yourself or at least thank these people for doing what they do. You have to keep in mind, they don't MAKE the games, they're just sharing them with you. By the way, just because YOU have seen it or downloaded it, doesn't mean everyone has. There are more people in this world that are getting online and signing up for things everyday. Please keep your snotty comments to yourself. However if you have something good to say or a thank you for these people, then please pass it on.

PS Sorry, I forgot to mention, unfortunately the game has "frozen" (well I suppose it would with all that ice ;-) ) on me 4 times, each time as the cube I was moving was in transit. The only way to cfix this (in Full Window Mode at least) is the dreaded Ctrl, Alt & Del. This is a real pity, it just stops responding indefinitely and sadly seems to be something that is always going to happen; I've only played 5 games and 4 of those froze up totally.

This is a wonderful game that is unlike any I have personally seen in a computer version; I used to have a similar game on an old mobile of mine, a Trium Mars (I adored that phone!!!) that I would still have if only to play this game (and the waving flower but that's digressing...) but when I switched it on one time it came up with "Malfunction" on the screen and the game (and the flower) were gone

Anyway, tangents. That game was called "Push" and was a penguin that needed to be guided around pushing blocks of ice. This game is similar also in the design as it has gorgeously frosty themed graphics with ice running throughout as the theme. Perosnally for that reason I would have also named the game along those lines - "Ice Cubes" is the one that immediately springs to mind but as well as movement of the cubes perhaps "Drift" relates to snow?

The best thing about this game is that it is not a task of chance; strategy and logic are promoted and you really have to think about your moves to get through the levels. I am totally and utterly stuck on level 15 I did go on to level 16 by pressing "Skip level" but I felt like a fraud and so came to write a review instead.

The most unique feature of the game is perhaps the Level Creator that is just ingenious - you can actually make your own levels of the game or get others to make them for you to play, it is such a fab idea and will allow the game to be played even after the 100 provided levels are mastered (which, ahem, doesn't seem to be anytime soon for myself if number 15 continues its twickiness...).

The music is not just bearable but enjoyable to listen to and the sound effects are pleasing with the most satisfactory "clunk" when your coloured cube clicks onto its corresponding dot.

The most enjoyable game I have played for a long time and definitely one that is worth keeping in your games folder. Despite this being a "repeat" from January I do feel that complaints are somewhat unwarranted; it is now September which is a total of approximately 270 free games before this has been duplicated. I did not know of the site until May which I am sure is the case for many other visitors and although I already have them I do hope for others who missed them that games such as Leaf Buster, Age Of Japan and Shine are also repeated - games such as those and today's are just too good to not repeat if possible and surely the sacrifice of one day of a duplicate game is worth other people being allowed to experience the joy that they missed when these games were given the first time around?

the games is nice, but hangs up on level 15 here and have to use task master to close it. And ,the license agreement does state that this is only a trial for you to try before you buy. Well folks, if a game freezes in trial why would you even want to pay for it.

This is a cool little logic game that makes you think - without a time limit! Decent graphics. My only complaint/question is: Is there a way to use a larger cursor of a different color? The small blue cursor on a blue background is a little hard to keep track of for those of us with low vision. Otherwise this is a great game. Thanks GGOTD for repeating some games for those of us who are fairly new to the site.

Got to level 13 (~10 minutes), and here are my comments so far:

- This game should keep track of which levels you completed - it makes locating the last level you played much easier, as well as the ones that were givign you trouble. This feature is traditional in most of the modern puzzle games that I have played, especially the Sokoban-style ones.
- It could work with keyboard entry as well - move the mouse over the tile, and press the arrow key.
- Scoring isn't required for puzzle games, but there could be a method of recording the solution. This is in case you want to review how well you performed or if you want to solve certain levels again...

#14 - You forget those who just plain missed them ;>

ZephyrDell (#19) - You mean "activated". Actually, most programs say they are trial versions (or say something like 'trial or full, if you paid') or are trial versions - until you enter the registration code. Don't panic, it's just the way things work sometimes :> Anyway, for this one, make sure you run Activate.exe, because this time it wasn't integrated in the setup program. Then you should have the full version.

gonzolo (#22) - For all you know, DriftCube came first.

Has anyone else noticed that upon reading the license agreement it states very clearly that this is a "Trial Version" limited playing time? Usually after installing you get a little window stating "this has been authorized" or something to that effect or it gives you a registration number. Nothing for me here. What about anyone else? I have just installed a "trial period" game. Thought we got the entire game for free? Help.

I run Win XP, SP2. I played up to about level 17 and this game locked up on me two times and I had to terminate it with Task Manager. Once around level 14 (the diamond shape) and again at level 16 or 17.

Progressive scoring with a Save button would be a nice variation. Otherwise an enjoyable puzzle game that makes you think and is different from many others.

This game was originally given away on the 15th of January. Follow the link to see the comments about this game:

http://game.giveawayoftheday.com/cubedrift/#comments

The following is my contribution:

I’ve just discovered that this game has a levels editor, which is fantastic. The game reminds me of one that saw the rounds of the commodores and early 286/386 PC’s in the 80’s called cubix (I was wrong on this, it was called something else, but my morphine soaked brain can't remember what it was). This is a nice clone of that game. The levels editor is a bonus. The music is okay; a 50 minute track, reminicient of early ‘Tangerine Dream’. Very mellow in places. Nice….. someone must have been jamming on fruty loops, lol. As soon as I saw that it had a levels editor, I thought….’Fan Site’…(yep it does have one), which at the monemt stands at only 18 members with only one actively making new levels. There’s five extra levels packs available for the game completely free, with the potential for many more, now that probably thousands have downloaded this game.

It really is a great puzzle game, although an earlier version I used to play called ‘cubix’ was much more colorful, however it didn’t have the advantage of a levels editor, which is always a big plus for me when buying arcade games. You can join the forums where the free levels are available by going to the following link:

http://www.dextrogames.com/forum/index.php

… Let’s see some of you game enthusiasts out there make some levels. I don’t think you have to be a registered user to download the free levels from the site, but if you want to leave a comment or upload home made levels to be shared you will need to register.

Good one GGAoTD team. I hope we get more games with levels editors.

I recommend Gish if you can persuade the developers to contribute to the give away project. It has a levels editor, won best game of the year a few years ago, but is only available from a few sources, (not so now as I've seen it on several game sites) so doesn’t seem to have taken off big time. The fan site has a good number of free levels. Check it out please as i’m sure it will be a winner. (I’ve already got it by the way)
