My router was down all day yesterday, so I couldn't get this game. I don't think that I missed much, though, considering the comments. Also, why bother with this when the original Command & Conquer has been released as freeware?

I got an error, and instructions to copy a few log files to their beta forums.

Disappointing to say the least, as I was eager to play with all the good reviews given.

Game play is alright. Being a huge starcraft fan this kinda hits the spot. It's a lot on the simple side for RTS, but it's a good 60 min of play time for me... i pretty much flew through the game. I got real pissed at the level where you had to save the "king" and escort him back to your base... Bad guys seemed to come out of know where and kill his weak ass... Seems like a bug, or a huge gap in difficulty in that one spot...

Here's the direct quote on Wikipedia about GB's:

"A gigabyte (derived from the SI prefix giga-) is a unit of information or computer storage meaning either exactly 1 billion bytes (1000^3 or 10^9) or approximately 1.07 billion bytes (1024^3). [1]

The usage of the word "gigabyte" is ambiguous, depending on the context. When referring to RAM sizes and file sizes, it traditionally has a binary definition, of 1024^3 bytes. For other uses, it means exactly 1000^3 bytes."

I finnished the game!It took hours to complete it.But I've played lots of games like this.So it was quite easy the most important things you need to do for the game is be confident and have a clear mind.Don't go crazy if all your Trident Defenders are dead.Another thing, if you want a good Freeware Strategy game, similar to this one. Then choose NetStorm. It used to be Shareware but now it's free so you don't have to pay for it.
And please remember this:
The best things in life are free and not the other way around.Because if you buy a pair of beautiful shoes priced at $200 and then you win a bottle of wine priced at $200,then the bottle of wine would be more special too you.It was free!

More details. My laptop has XP, higher specs and the "latest" Nvidia driver.
The first and second screen are fine. Third (Menu screen with animation) isn't. The animation and the mouse are jerky. :-(
I managed to change the mouse setting and unticked the bubbles.
NO CHANGE. Also I increased both settings of my virtual memory.
STILL NO CHANGE. This is not the only MERSCOM game I have trouble with.:-(
I painstakingly played level one. On level two I had to shut it down with ctrl-alt-del.
I will wait a day 'till I uninstall it.
Thanks Gaotd Team for many good games. And for the bad ones as it gives me time to play the good ones :-)

For those on dial-up (or incredibly slow broadband like I have here in China) I recommend using Free Download Manager at http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/. The manager can dramatically cut your download time. Today's game would have taken me two hours but with FDM it took 15 minutes. It is always free and it works great.

I downloaded and installed - fairly simple process, it set up like a dream. I played it for a while. I too had trouble getting the features to respond. Moving the characters was just too much work for the results.

Decided to uninstall.

Since some people want to debate, the problem with defining what constitutes a megabyte or gigabyte is that you get inconsistent and conflicting numbers for most things. Some report size based on base 10/decimal (1000), others base it on the binary system (128, 256, 512, 1024, etc.) and there are others who use mibibit/kibibit standards (1000 X 1024). RAM seems to be the one exception to this; it always uses the binary amount.

It's not likely that we'll ever see one set standard for everything, though it would be nice if that new hard drive you're buying with 200 GB actually has the full 200 GB of space that it claims to have. While the difference may increase exponentially the higher you go, it's not really serious offense to call 1000 MB or so a gigayte even if it technically isn't; it's easier (and more understandable) than saying 0.977 GB. There's more important things to concern yourself with than how file size is determined of what people call a megabyte or gigabyte. It's not the end of the world.

As for dial-up vs. broadband, I stand by my previous comments that the majority of internet users (worldwide) are still on dial-up. Not everyone wants, needs or can afford broadband. It isn't everywhere yet, nor is it affordable for everyone where it is. Some people may not even be able to get some services where they live, even if said service is available in the area. Eventually, it will be. It takes time and resources, plus the service providers have to want to make it available to more markets and not lose money getting it there.

Okay, that's enough for now. Back to the game(s). That's the reason why we're here, right?

I don't know what operating system and whatnot you are running, but on my computer, running XP, the mouse moves fine with no slow down. Do you have all your drivers up to date? I know for one of the games a few months back I had to update my drivers and then the game ran fine.

I like this game. The graphics are good, I like the underwater theme for a change from land based RTS's, and the music and sound is alright. I have played the first few levels, about 1/2 way through now, and found the game easy to pick up. The enemy is sneaky and sometimes pops up in the middle of your army or right by your army in an ambush type of way, so getting characters that are being escorted to safety takes some planning. I think that aspect makes the game just a tad more challenging, and that is a positive.

My two complaints about the game are minor and only have to do with my preferences. I don't believe there should be an arbitrary limit on the number of units a player can have. Also, in my own mind it would be better if the healers could cast a general spell of healing on an area instead of choosing one soldier to heal. It is time consuming to pull soldiers out of groups to send to the healers and then reform the battle groups. Not impossible though, just annoying.

All in all a good game and one I am happy was offered today. Thank you for your generosity, Merscom. And thank you to GOTD staff. You all are gems.

oh, and just like last time, when the Gordlons appear and I'm meant to take the merboys off to war, I click on the mini-map to move them (the perspective moves but not the merboys - is that the wrong way to do it?) the bad guys disappear. Considering that the last objective in the quest I need to fulfil is dispatching all the Gordlons that I encounter, it's a bit of a problem

#41 Try adjusting mouse sensitivity in the options panel. My mouse was overshooting by a good bit before I lowered the sensitivity.

#32 - Just how long did you have to wait for enemies to appear? I couldn't get past the 2nd quest, because the final task is to eliminate the Gordlons, and they never showed up! I kept checking around the entire playing space, but no bad guys. And until the non-existent Gordlons were fought, the game could not progress. It seems like a fun little game, but not if I can't go beyond the 2nd quest.

I played this as a 1-hour trial game, which I really don't like when you're trying to figure out how things work, and the lack of progress you may meet because of it. That said, I'm really glad that it's being offered here, because now I can waste (being the operative word) as much time getting the little...muggers, to do what they're meant to. Not that it was difficult, but I hated wasting my hour figuring that out. (I'm pretty sure that I lost the first battle because I didn't follow the combat instructions properly). I thought it was a cute concept; it may be based on another game, which I haven't seen and probably wouldn't play, but at least it is all-ages friendly (I don't know how graphic WoW gets). Oh, and anything that looks like a sea monkey army is likely to be kid-friendly, too.
Thanks to both the developers and ggaotd; I think, that any game I was willing to pay for is better value from this site

This is really cool, what I played of it so far! I don't understand where all the whiners are coming from...ahem but um what do you want for F R E E!? Besides I see great promise within this one (am a War Craft and Diablo Fanatic) so I am not easily 75% or better amused but this one as I have said shows promise and I am interested to see where it goes. As for the whiners, geez it is after all a free trial/play and see if you like version so utilize constructive PERTINENT criticism please! :)

"Some of us have no other choice but dialup because of where we live and IT is not a complaint, just a statment that files of this size take hours to download."

Sure, but that doesn't make it a valid reason for voting the game down, as some have clearly done. Voting the game down because you ( you in the generic sense, not you in the specific sense ) have a slow connection is like giving a book a bad review because you can't read. I realize it takes self control - which no one has any more - but the sensible thing to do if your speed is too slow to download it is to realize that today's giveaway is not applicable to you, and just not vote at all.

"Hey James (#5) 1 gigabyte is 1024 megabyte, not 1000."

I do love it when people set out to make others look stupid only for it to backfire on them. There are (at least) three valid definitions for a gigabyte and James' definition is as good as any, including yours.

According to the Wikipedia article referenced, both memory AND FILE SIZES are measured with 1024 megabytes to the "gigabyte". So "technically" Lars was correct.

When referring to the size of a file, you would count a gigabyte as 1024 megabytes. However, when referring to the size of a hard disk, most manufacturers consider 1000 megabytes as a gigabyte, but if you look at the total size of the disk in Windows, it will display using 1024 megabyte gigabytes (an therefore look like you got less disk then you payed for).

In any case the rules of what is and is not a gigabyte are fuzzy, with some places using 1024 megabytes per gigabyte and others using 1000, and getting it "wrong" is understandable.

This Gibibyte thing is relatively new, and is not used by many people who still use the historical definition of a gigabyte (1024 megabytes).

It is ironic that something for nothing people still complain about hmmm go figure. for this day and age who has the right to complain. I have found a few that aren't to my taste but when that happens I just take it out of my system, now how hard is that to do ... Come on people grow up have fun with what you like and be happy that you have something to play with instead of sitting at the pc starring at air. I can see if a program doesn't work right you let someone know but enough is enough.

Don't worry Be happy.

You know, I get so tired of seeing people bitch about the games when they are getting them for free. Personally, I love trying all the new games and if I don't like something, I don't download it or uninstall it. So what's the big deal. They only thing that disappoints me is when my system crashes and I lose the games I have and have to wait until they are offered again. I have lost lots of great games from Giveaway. So stop bitching about the games that are offered or unregister so you don't get them anymore.

Sorry Glen comment #39, I'd decided not to spend the usual few hours reviewing this game today otherwise I would have mentioned about the controls etc. I thought considering the great reviews by others my very short review would easily suffice.

The game is controlled by the mouse. You will be using both the right and left mouse buttons as well as dragging the cursor across specific area’s of the game field while he left mouse button is depressed so as to select your minions and or buildings etc. that we all know and love

I agree with your sentiments about this game bovi, but for an arcade game it's absolutely fine. If I was buying a shop bought RTS on a DVD or CD I would expect much more quality, but this particular game has obviously been made as an introduction to the genre for those not familiar with RTS and more to the point for children; though that doesn't preclude adults from enjoying the game..

Although I've not had the game running since my short review this morning I would expect my daughter would much prefer this to my much larger and better controlled games as it is far less complex to learn; you really only need a few minutes to pick up the controls for this game, and for the children not much longer. When I got my first RTS after a very long break from games, it was actually a Polish version of Cossacks: European Wars. It took me quite some time to learn the controls because at the time there was no Polish translators around (apart from my Sister in Law, but I didn't want to bother her every time I decided I needed a translation,

I've been having a quality day with the kids as they will be returning to school in just over a day. 'We've' just started taking down the Christmas Tree etc, so I've retired to the study for a few hours and thought I'd play one of my more recent RTS games that I mentioned above. :)

When I run this game, my mouse moves like it's embedded in oil - doesn't start moving right away, and overshoots the target every time. It's hard to even select the controls on the options screen. I've never seen an effect like that before. Has anyone else observed this? Is it intentional? I can't even bring myself to try to play the game when I can barely control the mouse.

#5 James...and some of you others out there. I do wish that those of you who feel that EVERYBODY should be on high speed would realize that some of us don't have a choice about the type of connection we have. I live out in a small country town where cable and high speed are not available, can you understand that????? I have no choice but to use dial-up which means that no matter how much I want to, I can not make even medium sized MB downloads take less than a couple of hours to download!!!! Can you understand THAT!!! I'm downloading this game because it looks like a good game but it WILL take 3 to 4 hours to download and in the meantime I can not use the internet or it will increase the download time substantially. But I'm willing to do it because I want this game and I have 15 hours and 12 minutes to download it in. Some of the games that are offered here are so large that even 24 hours is not enough time for me to download them and there isn't a darn thing I can do about it except sigh and wait for another SMALLER game to come along that I Can download. Do we understand what I am saying here?????
Just thought you should know.

@james, 36MB need not necessarily indicate crappy graphics. It's amazing what modern packing/compression systems can do. I'm not kidding. Check out .kkreiger at http://www.theprodukkt.com/ and it's wikipedia page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.kkrieger .. The phrase, "Never judge a book by it's cover" comes to mind. Cheers!!

ok, but this is a nice, well-built rts, yeah there are a lot of nice little features missin but those are not required, I give it a thumbs up, but I'm a RTS fan anyways so it may be bias, depending on bad or good bias depends on how you look at it
