The Game:
A mysterious knight shrouded by snow and ice. A castle lost in the skies. A young woman trapped in a crystal ball. And a hunter with nothing more than a bow and arrow who must save her. Sounds like the perfect setup for a dark fantasy fairy tale! Dark Strokes: The Legend of the Snow Kingdom sends you on a journey of mystery, throwing plot twists and mini-games at you faster than you can say “Oh, neat!”.
007

008
Dark Strokes is a sprawling adventure filled with action, creative puzzles, interesting inventory items, and plenty of surprises. Most of the obstacles in your path can be solved by locating a few objects in the general vicinity. To pick up those items, you might have to solve a small mini-puzzle. Then you realize the items need to be combined with something else, sending you on a journey further away. Once you get everything you need, piece it together, solve another short mini-game, and the object is yours. It’s sometimes a roundabout process, but it’s absolutely satisfying and always logical. No guessing required, just good old-fashioned detective work.
Dark Strokes uses hidden object scenes sparingly. You’ll encounter several standard list-type sections, each with a handful of interactive items to puzzle over. To make or discover these objects, you’ll usually need to complete a brief mini-game, most of which require minimal interaction and are just fun to watch. There are also a handful of short twists on the HOG layout that pop up from time to time. For example, an early mini-puzzle tasks you with finding items for a locked chest based on their silhouette. These aren’t quite hidden object scenes in full, but they operate in a similar fashion and are great fun to work through.
009

010
Have you ever wanted to play a first-person horse riding mini-game? The Legend of the Snow Kingdom has that, believe it or not! This game is filled with creative diversions that go well beyond the usual battery of puzzles in a hidden object adventure. In addition to the riding game, you’ll collect cannons for a model, feed a fat statue, and loads more. When you see these puzzles, they’ll bring a grin to your face, and when you complete them that grin will return.
Dark Strokes is packed with extra things to do and find. Morphing objects are hidden all over the place, and collectible snowflakes pop up in the most unexpected areas. There are even things you can interact with just for fun, such as a basket of fruit you can nibble off of or icicles that fall when you click them. Extras like this don’t impact the game, they just reward you for being thorough, and they’re tons of fun to discover.
The core of Dark Strokes: The Legend of the Snow Kingdom is a straightforward dark fantasy hidden object adventure. What sets it apart from other games is its focus on frequent and unique mini-games along with just-for-fun interactive elements. Dark Strokes is full of surprises, making it one of the more amusing adventure games on the market.

Conclusion:
I’ve only played the game for a short while; however, I did find what little of the game I managed to plow through well made with excellent graphics, decent puzzles, standard Hidden Object Scenes and well-made mini games. Nothing bad to say about the game. I’m sure all HOG lovers will enjoy this one. It’s only a couple of years old, so has most of the more recent HOG innovations. I won’t give this a score unless I manage to find time to play more later. Enjoy! :)

Problems getting the game to work:
If you're having problems installing or activating or getting Dark Strokes: The Legend of the Snow Kingdom to work please visit the FAQ's Thread HERE and read through the communities comments because sometimes fixes have already been posted, for example, a common issue seen since the Themida wrapper was introduced three years ago is that some community members installation of the game are blocked by their security because Themida code has been known to hide malware, (usually an error message is flagged for example 'The executable is corrupted' even though in reality it is not); so as a precaution some anti malware programs will block and even delete the suspect installation files even though the files (i.e. the setup, read me and setup.gcd files are actually totally free from malware. This issue can be solved either by rebooting your computer in safe mode with networking or a quicker method is to temporarily turn off your security software to allow the installation. You could also try whitelisting the setup.gcd file. In the almost 11 years this game giveaway site has been operating there has 'never' been a game given away that was infected with malware.
If for any reason you want to contact the giveaway team, for example, you have a game to offer the community, or are unable to download the latest game or other issues that the FAQ's thread or these comments don't cover or solve you can do so HERE
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank MyPlayCity for giving away Dark Strokes: The Legend of the Snow Kingdom and also to the game giveaway team, as always, for securing free games.

I normally gravitate towards solid HOGS with very few, if any, puzzles and I usually don't pay much attention to the story line.
But I have to admit, this one was done very well with excellent graphics and a very nice story line. Thoroughly enjoyed it and I found myself drawn in. TY.

Hello,

The game downloaded a little slow, but opened easy! The graphics are exceptional, and game play is
smooth. Of all the games I've played lately, this is near the top of the list. Gathering one item
to move on is normal play though. Most items are easily found, but I am not playing in the difficult mode yet.
The story is fairly typical, but a little different. Thanks for a great game and have a great week, Lee

I love HO games, and this one's great. There was no bonus chapter in this version, although the review above said that there was one. Oh well, it didn't kill my fun.

Happy Sunday, thanks for the game! It's a really great and well made game. I think it will be very addictive for some players...me first.

One problem though, the MPC's browser opens up as soon as I quit the game. They also re-installed all their "junk" on my desktop. (I so wish they didn't do that.)

WR, years ago I had made a comment to the effect of what was free about GGOTD giving games we already get for free from MPC. You had explained that not installing everything they usually do (webpage, desktop links, etc) is the difference between free from MPC and free from GGOTD.

Has something changed in regards to your previous explanation? Thanks WR for your time, effort and energy you put into this website. Thanks for clarifying this for me. No rush, I won't be back on for hours.

Have a great day everyone! :)

The main difference between the game giveaway versions and the MPC versions is that a folder containing the toolbars has been removed. MPC rely on adverts to be able to pay the developers of the games they give away for free via MPC and other free game sites like Gametop and TooMky games. I think MPC have reduced the amount of hassle since my last comment to you. You used to have to uncheck various checkboxes to stop the installation of adware, but they removed that several months ago. They tend to change the format every year or so.

Weezie, All of those icons can just be deleted. They don't contain content that is actually downloaded on your computer, just links.

Weezie,

"They also re-installed all their "junk" on my desktop. (I so wish they didn't do that.)"

IF it helps at all...
I set up a D: partition on my wife's PC as well as on her 2-in-1, and copy the game's folder there [after deleting the uninstall-related files, but that's optional]. I create a Games folder on the C: drive, subdivided with folders named A_D, E_H etc. -- I create a shortcut to the game.exe file, select the shortcut's properties [right-click], copy paste the name of the game, set the icon to the game-icon.ico file, click OK, & move the shortcut into the appropriate C:\Games\ sub-folder.

That way she can move her entire GOTD games collection [she's got hundreds] to a new PC, use it with another version of Windows [e.g. moving from win7 to 10] and so on -- just have to copy the games themselves to a drive partition with the drive letter set to D: & copy the C:\Games folder. Not having to [re]install &/or create new shortcuts is great, but there is a downside -- you're copying the games & shortcuts but not the saved games, which can be stored in several places.

It's optional, but so I don't have to always delete the Start Menu & DeskTop shortcuts, I use a minimal VirtualBox VM for GOTD game installs [you can get VMs free from microsoft.com that are good for 90 days I think, then you just re-import the download for a new VM]. I then go to the game's folder, delete the uninstall stuff, & 7-zip the MPC folder with just that game -- I'll later expand the 7z file, move the game's folder into place, & create the shortcut as above. I don't know that it saves me any work by using a VM that way -- it takes roughly the same amount of time -- but I Really Do Hate deleting the shortcuts & putting my existing desktop icons back where I want them.

mike, I'm no tech so I'm going to have to re-read your comment a few times before I get it. Lol. I've never really ventured into partitions... But it's a great idea/solution for sure. Maybe with trials and errors (hopefully few) I'll manage to accomplish that without messing up my PC too severely. In any case, thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it.

P.S. You know what? You should upload videos on YT with step by step instructions on how to... Make a living out of it. :D

Thanks. Been off on HOGs lately but this one looks like more fun, esp having the 3 various level settings so can have 'focus' on as a help, skip tutorial if want to, etc. Looks like nice graphics and side mini games should be fun.

Have played through for about a half hour, and so far, so good. Not earth-shaking, but a more than decent HOG/adventure so far. This is so far a bit different from the usual HOG: the hidden object scenes are mostly to construct something or find x number of things in a category (i.e. musical instruments) rather than random. Haven't come across real puzzles/brainteasers yet, but I'm hoping. My favorite type of this genre is one that has a decent storyline (maybe even educational), good graphics, pleasant or unobtrusive music, and a hefty combination of HOGs that aren't too dark and brainteasing puzzles that are challenging but not ridiculously so (or at least has an online walkthrough ;)).

I will second the suggestion to use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi when downloading if possible, especially at popular times. My Wi-Fi connection is one quarter of the speed of my Ethernet one; over wire, the downloads here are usually tolerable. And one little note about something that confused me initially: this one had widescreen unchecked, although it looked like it filled my screen (which IS widescreen---I often have to check this on older games). Checking it, it went down to square screen---the exact opposite of what was expected. I just unchecked it and it's fine, but just in case you were wondering if it was you...:)

..................................Moderator comment.....................................

I also agree that ethernet is the way to go when downloading. When we had major work on our house four years ago I had every room fitted with access to the router via a switch with cables running under the floors and inside walls so that you could connect to the router via ethernet sockets. I rarely use WiFi. I think the only person in the house that uses WiFi is my daughter when she has her iPad switched on, but she prefers the gaming PC I purchased for her 17th birthday. As a backup, I also use those plugs that you connect to the electricity supply so if the ethernet connection isn't enough you can just plug into one of the sockets using a special ethernet l plug.

Can anyone please tell me why it takes over an hour to download these games? I have Windows 10 (which I hate!).
Thanks!

..................................Moderator comment.....................................

Hi Tad, the reason it takes so long is that a lot of community members will be downloading this game, especially when the game first goes live. The best time to download these games is nearer the end of the giveaway when fewer community members are downloading at the same time. The larger the file, the more likely it is that more community members will be downloading at the same time because larger files obviously take longer to download. This has a knock on effect, especially for the first 12 or so hours of the giveaway when there are more community members downloading.
The giveaway teams servers have limited bandwidth. If only one person was downloading, the time to download would be much faster. As more community members are added to the download queue, the slower the download becomes. The solution would be to use a decent download manager; these split the download into packets, so you could have up to 16 or more packets of the game downloading at the same time. Once the download has completed, the packets are then 'stitched back together. The only issue with download managers is that those that don't use them will be even slower because those that use them are to all intents and purposes acting like say for example the download manager split the download into 8 packets that would give the appearance that you were 8 community members downloading, thus adding more strain to the servers for those that are not using a download manager. Basically using one is quite selfish as it slows the downloads more for those that don't use them.

Tad, Just one more thing to watch when downloading. If you have a choice between direct ethernet connection and WiFi always plug directly into your modem/router. In my case I get 50% more speed and on a large file, it sure makes a difference. :-)

Tad, I believe that it is the luck of the draw -- most times it's very fast for games of this size (average 5-10 minutes - & I don't have broadband) but occasionally it's super slow, as you noted. If it's very slow, I cancel the download & try again in a half hour or cup of coffee, whichever comes first. BTW, the version of Windows shouldn't affect the download speed. Hope this helps.

Tad, do a speed test (speedtest.net) and find out just how much bandwidth you have. 1mg or 10mb is very slowwwww...... cable is usually the best but even at 100mb (which is what I have) taking down a file can be slow and it depends on the traffic on the Internet and the server that has the file you want. Windows 10 is just fine IF you have all your security choices turned off. It comes with a lot of choices turned on so your computer is always sending Microsoft info and slowing you down. Shut them off, make sure you have 8GB Ram and you should work as good as all mine work.

MyPlayCity-Schrott-Werbung

..................................Moderator comment.....................................

Bitte entschuldigen Sie mein schlecht übersetztes Deutsch.

Reply   |   Comment by iDaxx  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-8)
