................................Moderator comment...................................
Firstly thank you to everyone for their kind comments. I'm not leaving and I won't be stopping posting reviews, just not the same format as I have been doing for the past 10 - 12 years.
The reviews have slowly increased in size as I've added new sections. I did reduce the size a few years ago as they were becoming unwieldy and I was sometime spending as much as six or more hours working on them (including the game time). I feel they have become unwieldy again, so want to reduce the size and cut down on stuff that isn't related to the game being given away, for example the games I link to at the end of most reviews I'll now post in the game discussion forum where they belong, but i will post a few links to the Epic and Indie Gala sites as they have been changing their free games regularly..
The main reason for my comment today was to say I'm spending far too much time on reviews for this site when I have a lot of other projects I'd either like to finish, or even start (for example I still have to edits thousands of feet of family cine film so that I can get it digitized. I have hundreds of hours of video that I've taken since my first video camera. Most of which needs editing and transferring to disk, I still have to set up my telescope and I am intending helping out with a new mod that is being created for the old battlefield 2 game plus I am hoping to navmesh some old maps and create some new ones, but I have to learn how to use the software to do so, and I want to relearn German to name just a few of the projects I'm part way through or still have to start. :)
All the work I do here is done for no payment (apart from the occasional Steam key I get for reviewing some of the limited giveaways, most of which I always enjoy playing e.g. Warhammer Vermintide I and II and Conan Exiles, all three of which are among my favorite AAA game genres. Also the recent ADM2 the top down RPG and more recently The Last Roman village).
Since last November we have been getting a lot of mid week games, sometimes every day each week. A lot of them have been pretty dire for example SovKey and Nekyau Games, but we have also had some excellent indie games over the past several months ranging from RPG's, Shooters, Shmups, Platformers and others. There was no way I could spend the same amount of time each day on the reviews so I decided to just post a short precis of the games after some game play time and include video links and some images as well. These took a lot less time than my weekend games, but still have cut into my spare time significantly. So I decided to do something similar with the weekend games at least for now, but only those games I'm not as keen on such as HOG's TM games and most Match Three games. I listed the types of games i enjoy playing in my comment this morning, so it stands to reason, that they are the games that are worth me spending time writing a full review, and not games I don't enjoy playing. It's one of the reasons I resorted to linking to other reviews written by more enthusiastic reviewers of those genres. It seemed and IMO was the best option to ensure the community was given enough information to make a decision as to whether or not download the game.
The original reason I started posting reviews was two fold, the first was as a thank you to the giveaway team for giving us so many great arcade games for free; (for all those of you who have been here since the inception of the project and until April 2008, when we used to get games from the likes of Alawar and other big name developers/distributors, you will remember many of those great arcade games we got. It didn't end there, but we only got games at the weekend for many years until last November when weekday games were returned. The second reason was becasue back when this site first started, internet was still expensive and many were on limited monthly downloads, so my reviews were partly to help them save their download allotments by giving them enough information via reviews, images and video (though I wasn't able to post images initially). Regards Whiterabbit-uk

Whiterabbit-uk,

Well, you've been basically writing 2 blogs every weekend -- for some people, writing a couple of blog posts a week is their full time job. Referring folks to the forum for info that's not constantly changing is a smart move, but I wonder if you've considered ways you might automate some of this stuff, if you don't already, e.g. have the screenshots uploaded the moment you take them. Small stuff, like using a macro that takes any pasted url & turns it into whatever code's needed so it shows up as your blue "HERE" links might add up. But that's just my own 2 cents, always being lazy by necessity.

I'm taking a (possibly permanent) break from my usual weekend review/comments; instead I'm just going to post (if available) a precis of useful links from walkthroughs, community comments and discussions about the game being given away as well as links to various game play videos and a couple of full reviews of the giveaways, plus several in game images. This will become the norm' as time goes on as I don't have as much time at the weekends as I used to have because I'm also spending a lot more time posting reviews of most games throughout the weekdays (Mon to Fri). This has eaten into my spare time significantly. I have loads of projects on the boil, but hardly have any spare time to devote to them, so I'm going to step back a little on the long reviews that I usually post at the weekends. Even when I use other reviews (which I always correctly reference and give credit to), it can still take me four or more hours to complete a review. If its a game I really enjoy such as a shmup, breakout, tower defense RPG, FPS, the occasional limited giveaways with Steam keys and some RTS games or maybe even an unusual platformer, I'll spend a little more time on posting a full and original review; otherwise they will be of a similar format to today's or my weekday reviews where I usually give a brief overview and opinion of each game. Of course I will continue to moderate these comments as usual, regards W.R.

Whiterabbit-uk, ooh I'm so excited to try this one! Right now, I've been roped into trying Space Food truck with some friends at Chrono. :)

You've given this site years and years of service and I'm happy that'll you've be taking time to invest in personal projects - hopefully one is even Astronomy related. ^^ However often I see you around, I'll be grateful. Always appreciative, Mr. Whiterabbit. Have a great Sunday. Cheers.

As long as you're able to still provide some extra screen shots I'll be happy. I was mainly looking at the screenshots anyway. ._.

Whiterabbit-uk,

I just wanted to say that I, and I am sure many here do, appreciate all that you do, Stephen! As much fun as many of these game here are, understandably, much in life takes precedence over this. I know you'll still be around but just wanted to let you know that and say thank you.

On a different note, I hope your daoghter is enjoying her time away and finding it enriching.

Whiterabbit-uk, already have today's game on Steam, it looks like a very good one!

I also want to say thanks for all you have done for the site! For years you have provided good reviews of your own or referenced the work of others, provided pictures and ratings and links to walkthroughs, and a given glimpse into your world (kids growing up, Shmups good, Time Mangement bad, vacations & trips and health....). You have often had other priorities get in the way of your support here, and I don't think anyone has ever complained about that! I will miss your extensive efforts but would be happy to see you doing what matters most to you, without the pressure of this site demanding so much of your time. I have more games now than I will ever be able to play, so maybe it's a good thing to not have your reviews tempt me to add "just one more".

I appreciate everything you have done here. Your reviews helped me decide whether to try the game. They were very useful and I'm going to miss them. Thank you!

Hey Wabbit,

Finally! You do WAY too much.I am glad you are taking some time to yourself. You always worry about us. You need to spend time with the family and do things you like. I am glad you decided to take a break and enjoy the games you like and spend more time with the family. Take time for your own projects. Oh and YES...I remember the days when I would wake up every morn and the first place I would go was GGOTD to see what NEW and Pretty games they had. Those were awesome days and I miss them. Now, some of the games they offer...I just can't believe my eyes sometimes.

Just post a few pics, tell us what kind of game it is and a link to a review. That is all we need. We can decide from that whether ...To download or not.

Huggles to you and the family..Take care, my friend.

No time to play right now, but I can report that it installed without a hitch (after I took care of the antivirus issue first), the graphics look great, and the reviews at the BigFish site look pretty good. So, all in all, I'm thinking this one is a keeper! Thanks very much, GAOTD and BigFishGames!

Game downloaded and installed fine (pausing Avast and Zemana) on a Win10x64 machine. Initially, the character' speaking on the train was too low to hear, even with the volume turned all the way up, but then got louder in the next scene and since.

There are 3 modes of gameplay, I chose "casual". I do not understand the reason for the choices to lie/tell the truth/not answer that the player has to make while she is responding to her therapist's questions. Does the choice change the trajectory of the game? I chose tell the truth in every one since that is what one should do with their therapist otherwise it is pointless to go. Just saying. If I finish and go back and play a second time, I may try answering differently just to see if it does have an effect.

Navigation is clear as is the things you are trying to achieve. The first hidden object excercise is fun once you realize that one thing you find helps you find the next. A nice twist. That is as far as I got in the game today. I look forward to getting in further, hopefully later in the week.

Thank you to all involved for giving us this game today!

Beautiful game with crisp images. I like the games where you can move things around and pick things under others. It feels more natural. Loaded easily on Windows 10. It's easy to navigate and the story is intriguing. Quality game. Thanks!

Forgot to mention for those old XP users, don't bother with today's GOTD. I do vaguely remember trying on my old XP back then and it would not install. The problem being the wrapper being used. I had to use my Vista laptop to get it at the time...

Trying 2 B Helpful,

In my experience the problem I think is the file when extracted/unencrypted is too large to be stored in memory. At the time I could use a later version of Windows running in a VirtualBox VM, but I don't *think* it's possible to get VBox running in XP any longer [even older versions].

Reply   |   Comment by mike  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

mike, That's my hypothesis too, hence why I said the wrapper causes the problem. If it wasn't for the GOTD wrapper, it *would* install fine, IMO.

Trying 2 B Helpful, I've had this problem with another game before (forget which one) and solved the problem by installing it on my Windows 10 laptop and then copying the game folder onto my XP desktop computer (which is still the one I use the most) - it worked just fine! And I didn't end up with all those extra MyPlayCity shortcuts; the only shortcut I had was the one I created myself!

Reply   |   Comment by Min  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Min,

FWIW, I install the games in a VM -- mainly because it's easier to restore every so often so I don't have to bother deleting shortcuts on the desktop etc. -- and copy the game's folder, same as what you're talking about. The part I'd add, hoping it might be helpful, is I put all of these games in the same "Games" folder on a 2nd, D: partition, and put all of the shortcuts I create to the game.exe file in those folders in subfolders like this: C:\Games\A_D\ . The reason for doing it that way is that the entire collection can be easily copied & moved to another copy of Windows, or another PC or laptop, stored on a USB drive etc., as long as the drive with the games is assigned the letter D:.

Thanks for all those who mention that a game has already given away before.

Saves me a lot of time installing and trying a game I already know.

Really appreciating most of those wonderful games - thanks for all your efforts.

Trying 2 B Helpful,

Very odd. I keep a detailed list of all installs and this one is not in my list. Yet it seems oddly familiar. Unless it has a sister game and I missed the download offer, I must have simply forgot to record the install.

Thanks for pointing out the previous offering and making me face the grim truth of my failings in journal keeping.
