Today Giveaway of the Day
$5.00
free today
The game consists of 16 levels, each of which is a puzzle of 45 elements.

Cubozoid is both a fast-paced arcade game and a brain-teasing challenge; therefore, you must possess both a quick wrist and a sharp mind to win. Your task: keep a string of colored cubes from filling up your computer screen.

As the blocks wind their way across the game board, you must fire your own cubes at the procession in a frenzied attempt to create matches of three or more blocks of the same color. When you succeed, the corresponding cubes erupt in a dazzling display of multicolored particles.

Relief comes in the form of special blocks with unique powers. The Lighting Bolt, for example, zaps an entire row or column of cubes, while the Chameleon changes into the color of the block it hits. Learn to use these cubes well and you'll get to visit several striking locations around the world, including India, China and the Old West.

Although an easy setting is available, we know you have what it takes to beat one of our most challenging games, so play it today!

I was going to download this game but in the process my antivirus program came on and said there was a file that was downloading that had "HUER/malware". Well that was the end of that I don't need to be loading viruses into my computer.

Gotta say no to this one. The blocks came too fast for me to enjoy even the first few levels shooting from the side for some reason. If there were an option of shooting from the bottom I might have liked it better.

Thanks for the opportunity to try it though Alawar and GGotD. I had no trouble downloading or playing on XP.

To Diane: It seems the gamebox game changes every month on the day you installed the gamebox. So if you installed it today, the first, then you'll be offered next month's game on January 1st. Mine has changed on the 17th every month so far (since being installed July 17)

#46-I'm playing mostlt Dragon when I'm downloading or just blowing time. It's the funnest, most casual game I ever had. And it's just kinda satisfying somehow. lol :) Was a good freebie here. :)

Diane, I don't know when it changes over as I've not been chhecking recently. I do believe that the last game was on for much longer than the 'promised' month, but as you pointed out it's still a beta test. I haven't found it intrusive at all.

With respect to the virus warnings I've noticed that Alawar are now trying to get people to use a new system, which enables you to get games free for buying goods from selected web sites. It may be this that is causing the problem because it has been offered for the past few days and it seems odd that some people have been getting these warnings. I noticed someone said they were using sophos, which someone yesterday mentioned they were using. I'm using F-Secure which is updated daily, and whenever I log on. I also use Prev-X. Both have not picked up any viral warnings.

Cop mom #25, I to downgraded from Vista to XP, although I've still got my Vista disc in readiness for service pack 1 as I did like it, and bbesides I just spent a small fortune ensuring I could enjoy the wonderful DX10 graphics, so I'm keen for some sort of fix to be found soon for all the problems. Mine ranged from consant freezing of the computer, where I had to turn the computer off by the power switch. Error messages constantly popping up, the DVD and seperate CD player rewriters were not recognised by Vista although in bios they were, so onve I'd installed the software I wasn't able to use them. Most of my proframs such as Nero, and my video editing software wouldn't work anymore as they were incompatible. Oddly I managed to use the DVD to install a lot of the programs I normally used. But once I turned it off for the first time then rebooted, that's when the problems started.

Raine #31,
I would 'think' it's a false positive, but I'm not the one to tell you to install it. You could always install it into your sand box, (if you have one) I've downloaded all of the ones that people claim are indicating malware and have had no sign of trouble. It's up to you though. Do a retore before you installthe game.
Thanks Jaclynn

Thomas comment #44, Iwould suggest you delete the game using the uninstaller that you'll fine either by going into the game file, or going to the start menu and picking up the installer from there.

Then update your video drivers. Before that though check to see what version of direct X you have by following the path:

Start Menu/run/ then type in dxdiag and then click on okay. This will bring up the direct X diagnostic tool. It will tell you which version of Direct X you have. If you play a lot of games it should be DX 9.0c. That's what you need for this game, although in the read me found in the games folder it does say DX 8.0. Anyway. If you don't have the latest version, you can download it from the address I've already posted in my first post above. You can't miss my post as it's a few pages long at least, lol.

I did say I would be posting info about where you can get another collapse game over on the forums as I'd intended to post this review there as well. I deleted the doc file instead of saving it when I closed down Word. However it doesn't matter as I remember where you could get the game. It was via Alawars game box. That free game has now been replaced with hyperballoid as I mention above.

Disappointed--it wouldn't run. Like #45, I'm using WinXP. First install it would start up but then minimize itself. Tried to uninstall, but it got hung up on deleting the Apache (I think) font. I had to hand delete everything else after rebooting. Went ahead and tried to install again. Then it hung up on opening and I had to do a hard boot to shut it down. Usually I don't have many problems with Alawar games, but I sure did with this one.

This is a rather good game of its type, but not as good as two similar games that were given away here earlier this year, "Magic Tea" and "Dragon".
I don't know why it gobbles up 24 MB, as the graphics are fairly basic and static.

Quality game, although admittedly hard and frustrating just by the nature of the gameplay. You can't really tell which way blocks are going to shift in some levels - especially when they get very full and have have different patterns throughout the level. Also, I find that I see the shots but just can't get the pointer to move to them and fire before they shift so I just miss much of the time and that leads to major frustration. I guess the roughly 50/50 rating on this game is understandable... I like the quality, but not the gameplay. Still I'll give it a thumbs up because the developers did a good job with it.

This game is a good download. I would not call it great but it is well worth the download. I also installed the game box after reading comments 15 and 33. I normally avoid these type of game managers but this one seems OK. The folder is about 3MB in size so disk space should not be an issue. All of my Alawar games have been downloaded here so I guess they are full versions. Not sure why game box identifies some as demo version. Same as # 33. I just wonder how this game box measures up against something like mostfun.com's game. I always thought that site was interesting but avoided it because of the game manager type of program. Would love to hear anyone's comments that have used it. My last comment is to # 27 and # 30. I can't believe you would insult people about spelling. Were the mistakes they made so bad that you could not understand what they meant? I post on here sometimes and I make mistakes. There are called typos. Everyone does it. I would guess even # 27 and # 30 does too. just because someone makes a mistake in spelling doesn't take away from their comment. Now where is my spell checker?

I find it sad that there are always so many complaints. If ALL the games are games you don't like, then get your games somewhere else. If you were to find a five dollar bill on the street, I bet you would just whine that it wasn't $100. Not cool.

I suppose my computer just isn't fast enough to run this game, which was surprising because I haven't had any trouble running any others...Everything was fine until it got to the actual game screen, then everything slowed waaay down, no way I could play. Oh well...I guess my computer is past due for an upgrade...

I'm running Vista basic, and I had no problems getting this game to install or run with the default settings. I'm betting the conflict has to do with video card drivers and not Vista itself - try running it in a window instead of going into the game's default video setting.

I thought this was a fun little way to spend a half an hour, and my wife enjoyed it as well. I'm not sure that the game offers enough variety to be worth $19.95, but I did have a good time with it.

My only real complaint would be that as the game goes on, while the puzzles do get more challenging, it is often much easier to just go in from an angle where the field is full and the blocks don't stick and then start firing away randomly than it is to solve the puzzles legitimately. I often found myself relying on this tactic to get through puzzles that had heavy proportions of the "speed up" icons (and I'm still not sure why those are included since they can make the game frustratingly difficult in the later levels!).

Still, this is a high quality download, and I'll keep it around for those moments when I have some downtime and need some frenetic action puzzling.

Whiterabbit, I had been avoiding the Game Box installation until I read your post today. Then I uninstalled and re-installed to get GameBox. If I can get another freebie, the extra disk usage is minimal. It still says Beta so maybe you will get your "something for helping" yet.

I installed it to the same place as my other Alawar games (within my "Game Giveaway" folder. I also told it that is where "My Games" are located. What surprised me is that it did find that I have 12 Alawar games. It knows that 3 are "full" versions but thinks the other 9 are the 60 minute demo version. I don't think I will try to execute my games through them!

Two of the three games are ones that I downloaded "exras" from Alawar itself (Snowy Puzzle Islands and Hyperballoid) but I have no idea why it knows that Beezle is full when it doesn't know the others.

Thanks for the information for another possible freebie! When does it change? Does it change at the first of the month, first Monday of the month or when?

Keep it up GGOTD! I love the opportunity for a free, adware free, and malware free game anytime I can get it!

Help/advice, please.

I am getting a malware viurs warning with Cubozoid's activate.exe (Mal/Behav-010)
I have Sophos Anti-virus.

This hasn't happened to me before with GGAOTD.

Is this program safe to run? I am interested in trying the game (looks like fun), but I hesitate to ignore the anti-virus program. However, other people seems to have had no problems with it, yet shouldn't all our virus programs pick up the same threats?

Is this activate.exe any different than all the others in the several weeks?

Thanks!

lmao #27 was gonna say something similar. If you cant spell, why would we take your advice.

For the ppl whining about adult games, why dont you go out and BUY them. If you are an adult you must have a job since you can afford a computer.

For the ppl complaining about spyware i think i know why. When you install an alawar game you get the extra links that go on ur desktop, thats prolly why its being flagged...just my guess, i dont know for sure.

Thanks Alawar for your games but this one just doesnt seem too interesting for me. It does look pretty good tho.

I love this game! I was hesitant to download it at first because I figured it was just another of those cube games, but it's Alawar, so I figured it was worth a try. I was right. It's very fast, and a combination of Luxor and Tetris. Those blocks don't just sit there - they snake around the grid!

It never ceases to amaze me how many people here whine for adult games. So.... unless they can blow up things and see blood and gore, it's a children's game? Hmm - makes me wonder who the children really are :-)

Just a note regarding the free games I posted links to:

Sorry for the multiple posts, I felt I should clarify a few things about the MyPlayCity games site.

If anyone does download any of the games from the MyPlayCity site be sure to read the instructions while installing the games because some of the games require you to agree to allowing some MeMe advertising files to be downloaded onto your computer, which are basically adware and spyware as they log the type of sites you visit then inform you of other web sites they think you may be interested in.

If you use your computer mainly for research this can actually be a good thing though. For example the computer I allowed this software to be installed on was only used for games and to research stuff related to my accident such as surgical procedures, drugs used to control the pain and other related issues and I found that the MeMe program that ran unobtrusively in the background would occasionally give a pop up message to say it had found a site related to one of my searches. These were all related to the research and were not sites related to internet shopping etc, so if used with caution the MeMe program can actually be of benefit. I don't allow it on my main computer’s though as I do a lot of browsing to all sorts of web sites (mainly related to the games I play, but sometimes to sites like M&S, Argos, Game UK, Micro Direct etc etc).

You can delete the MeMe files without affecting the games, but that would be tantamount to stealing as you do agree to run the software when you download the games. Not all of MyPlayCity's game installations wanted to install this adware though. Gametop has no adware or spyware at all.

For all those using Vista.. I know several people that formatted their machines and downgraded to WinXP! A friend of mine said the stores cannot keep enough XP on hand to satisfy the customers. She just downgraded from Vista and said now her new laptop is flying. As for the wonderful games that are being offered, especially Alawar, they have some really good games. I've not had any problems with any of their offerings! And my grandkids love the kiddie ones! Happy Holidays to all!

Looked like it would be a good game, until I tried playing it. I'm a bit color blind, and can't tell the difference between the green & red blocks.

I nearly always like the Alawar offerings, but for some reason I have to set them up for Win98 compatibility mode on my XP machine.

I loved this game when given away back on January 2, 2007!

However, downloading it now, I noticed it was a quite a bit larger(+4 MB) file, and my AntiVir flagged it as 'Contains suspicious code HEUR/Malware'.

So, what's up with that GAOTD???

The last few days all the programs from GAOTD & GGAOTD have been being flagged by Anti-Virus software!!!??

Has GAOTD been infected, or what????

Those of us who love the site want to know what's going on!!???

How about giving us some info GAOTD!!!

...OR I FEAR PEOPLE WILL START LEAVING THE SITE IN DROVES!!!!

Thanks for all the GREAT software over the last year,
but what's up!!!?????

Please let us know!!!

I'm glad I downloaded this game, after some misgivings that it would be a Tetris-like knock-off. It's completely different, and I think a good deal more challenging. I would have liked to have been able to fire from all four sides of the playing field but that's the only drawback IMO. Thank you GGOTD and Alawar!

#14 - It's not the game nor can you blame GGOTD - it's bloody Vista - as I keep repeating on here over and over, Vista is rubbish, the programs work for some and not for others!

For example - I cannot use MICRSOFT Outlook on my desktop but it's ok on my laptop. My brother cannot use Microsoft Word. Notice anything there?? They are Microsoft programs that won't work on Microsoft Vista!!!!!

Intro:

Cubozoid was given away back in January and received 87% of 109 votes. The following are some of the comments made by others. Please check out, in particular comment #13 by Paco, who mentions some problems such as not being able to use the keyboard, color blindness issues, and no level of difficulty, while TK comment #15 thought the game would play better if the game screen was rotated 90 deg and emulated Paco’s comment about keyboard keys. (personally I like it the way it is on both of the last two counts, although this isn’t really valid as you actually get board sets in both orientations.).

The installation is a breeze and consists of the usual three files; (for newcomers to the project, please read the document included with the download then click on the activation module to ensure the game will be the full version. Failing to do this will ultimately result in you only having the demo, which for Alawar games will be obvious. During the set up wizard, you will be prompted to allow the game to start as well as allow Alawar’s game box to be installed. If you don’t want this installed make sure you uncheck the tick box, otherwise it will be installed.

Caution for those who do not like extra’s being downloaded:

The game box gives you easy access to all of Alawar’s games and also to a monthly free game. The game being given away at the moment is Hyperballoid, so if you missed that giveaway get it now before a new game is put up (you will have to install game box) . I already had the game box as I beta tested it for Alawar (nothing special about that, I was a regular visitor when the beta was being offered for testing. They promised those that helped would receive something for helping out, which hasn’t happened yet???). I’ve included a screen capture of the appropriate setup wizard’s window:

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/cubozoid/CuobzoidCompletingsetup.gif

The game:

On starting the game for the first time you will be presented with a profile set up. Just type your name in the field that’s presented and you’ll be set to go. Once this is done whenever you boot up the program again it will go straight to the main menu, with your profile. If more than one person wants to play the game all you have to do when the main menu is presented is click on the change player, which can be found below the purple colored welcome message

There is no help menu but you will find a html document called read me that gives you a brief overview of the game, game controls and the power ups available as well as the hardware requirements that are pre millennium so there wont be many who can’t run this game. You do need 3D emulation that all MoBo’s (motherboards) include nowadays although TK does mention in the previous comments (#15 see link above that takes you to the first release of the game in January), that the MMX 3D renderer that is common to a lot of motherboards doesn’t support this game. Make sure you have the software renderer DX9 (forget DX10 for now unless you have one of the cards I mentioned yesterday and Vista – see comment #17 - http://game.giveawayoftheday.com/space-crusaders-open-range/ or from the forums - http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/2029?replies=2 that can be downloaded from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1A2393C0-1B2F-428E-BD79-02DF977D17B8&displaylang=en

The options menu will allow you to adjust the music and in game sound effects. And you also have the option of toggling between windowed and full screen mode. As well as screen resolutions, which range from 800x600x32, 1024x768x32 and 1152x864x32. Some may think this is limited, but personally the game looks fine in all three resolutions on my monitor, which is small to medium sized (TFT 23” AMW). Whenever you change a parameter within the options menu you must save it otherwise it will revert to the default settings when you leave the menu.

Starting the Game

There are two modes of play, linear and group modes. The difference between the two is that you can only destroy columns of three or more of the same color in the linear mode and with the group mode any group of three (or more) in any configuration be it in a column, row or L shape, or with more than three virtually any shape imaginable from square onwards – I’m sure you get the picture. :).

The linear mode is the harder of the two to play IMO. Both modes share the same level selection maps but obviously are different maps if you know what I mean. When starting either of the modes you also get to choose a full game that takes you through different levels and throught the different themes or a quick game. The quick game takes you straight into the action and is basically a single game. As you progress through the ‘story mode’ you can select any level to play using the quick game option. However apart from that there is no difference between it and the main game, although in the main game you are taken to different themed countries such as China, , Africa, Europe and the Wild West. Each country consists of 6 levels. Throughout the game there are power ups available such as pause which stops the movement of the cubes for a short time; bombs that destroy the cubes around them and others that destroy columns or rows or both. To earn these power ups you have to include the cube that is displaying the power up within a group you are destroying. There are also special cubes that can be fired at the moving column of cubes, that slowly (or fast depending upon how you perceive it) approaches the shooting platform such as the chameleon cube and the lightning bolt. There are a few more but I’ll let you discover these. Watch out for the trick cube though as it speeds up the moving blocks. You can dump unwanted cubes in the basket to the bottom left of the playing area. Once the green Indicator to the left fills up, additional cubes are added to the playing area, which effectively reduces the bonus scores you can receive by completing a level quickly (see below for explanation. The more cubes you have on the playing board the less likely you are to win the level as they may reach the end of the board. The purple indicator to the left shows how near you are to completing the level. You can pause the game by using the Esc key. At the end of each level you are shown your score statistics. Which include bonus points for how quickly you completed the level and how much empty space you had unoccupied by colored cubes. During each level set which represents a country that I mention above, you will unveil an image appropriate to that country that also creates a more unusual shaped playing area as the level set progresses, and also makes it harder as there is less space for the cubes to go. The fewer misses you make the better your score will be. That is there are cumulative bonuses for the more hits you make in a row.

The initial boards are straight forwards and will look a little boring, but as you progress through the levels you will come across more and more intricate maze like boards. The orientation of the boards also changes from a sideways to a top down view. See the Googled images for details of a few of these boards.

Although there is no accessible help menu apart from the very brief read me document that I’ve already mentioned, there is a reasonable tutorial system that crops up whenever something new is introduced to the game.

Conclusion/opinion:

This is definitely a keeper for me as it’s more challenging than most match three games of this genre. Don’t confuse this game with tetris which is a totally different genre. Also don’t be deceived by what looks like boring board sets because as you progress they become more complex.

In my opinion this is worth 7.5 out of 10, just not quite there for me to consider buying it (at the moment at least) It’s quite challenging with the cubes relentlessly moving towards the shooting range, It’s the movement of the cubes snaking their way towards you in a sideways manner that makes this game challenging because the configuration of the cubes is ever-changing. This is definitely one for my games library.

Thank you very much Alawar and the game giveaway team for a wonderful repeat of an excellent game (I’ll probably buy this actually as it’s much better than any of the super collapse series, so give it an 8 out of 10, lol).

Other information:

To change the music you can replace the existing ogg files called respectively MusicInterface and MusicGame with whatever music you fancy, however you will need to convert the files from your usual mp3 or Wav formats using a suitable audio editor. There have been several given away over the past months, however if you have missed the giveaways just follow the link below for a freeware version that has been tested for malware and adware by the giveaway team.:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/freeware/2007/07/30/free-mp3-wma-wav-converter/

You must also rename whatever files you are using to names of the original files mentioned above. (I would put the originals into a back up folder). Your music should then be pplayed in the intro and the main game. Simple :)

Recommendations:

If you like this game may I recommend the super collapse series, which includes upgrades up to super breakout 3 and the supper collapse puzzle galleries.

as well as Qbeez and Archpelago (you can check these out from the same link above.

Freebies:

The following free full version games do have a small price to pay which involves a browser to their home page being opened up whenever the game you are playing is closed down. For the GameTop games which I’ve been frequenting for a couple of years now, I’ve never had any pop-ups or other ‘wares and the browser is simply closed by pressing the X button to the top right of your screen. You will find lots of other games there as well. I’ve posted a large article in the forums section with links to all those games I’ve checked out recently and can vouch for, although read all the comments as there were a couple of mistakes in my original post. Thankfully BuBBy at my request deleted the offending link (thanks to freeware fan pointing the error out). MyPlayCity is a fairly new one for me and except for the one (which was deleted from the list I’ve posted) is similar to GameTop with respect to getting a browser window opened. You can allow the firewall to block it as well and it doesn’t affect the playability of the full versions as the browser always opens after the game has been closed down. :) There are no annoying pop ups either.

As I said above check out the forum post for more details:

I received a free full version game of this genre for downloading a particular download/games manager similar to the one that Alawar is offering. Check out the forums later to see if I managed to find the link. It will be in the general forum under Cubozoid review. Although it may take a few days, lol.

I'm not very good at it either but it's interesting and it works great on my Vista Ultimate.

Steven (#5), you might want to check where you are installing the games (I never install games into Program Files) or what general configuration you have. I have had a few Alawar games not work but most of the time they work. My experience has been that at least 95% of games that do not say Vista will work under Vista. A few need some tricks to make them work but they do.

Good variation on the shoot'n'match three Luxor/Dynomite theme. Nice relaxing music (while the gameplay is not as relaxing).

A bit confusing that the game counts the situation at the point where you shot the cube, not when it lands, so you may end up shooting too early quite a few times. Once you get used to it, it makes it easier to hit what you want though.

I've played 2 episodes. I find that when there starts to become too many blocks towards the end, pelting away at a point until the structure breaks and some matches are made in the middle of them is a good tactic. But I notice that the bad-o-meter on the right starts to fill really quickly when I do, so I guess it will be punished in later stages of the game where I probably will start to struggle before the end of the level is close. Nice touch.

Not too many kinds of bonuses appearing. Those that are there are nice though, and you need to be alert to avoid the speedups and collect all the good ones.

This game gets a thumb up from me, but I have a hunch that it will not be as durable as Chameleon Gems. Give it a spin and you might decide it's worth paying the asking price.

Nice game Alawar and GGOTD, I'm rubbish at it though! Res goes up to 1280 x 960 at 32bit, pity it won't go higher, music is nice and it works fine on MY Vista!

Downloaded and installed easily. But does not work with Vista. I really am getting tired of Vista. Why is it that windows still can't get it right after 6 or 7 times of [upgrading]? Went to website and this looks like a nice game. If you have Vista, don't bother.

So when wiil the people at GOTD plan on offering some really good games? All we ever see is games for younger kids (2-10 yr olds). maybe some of the adults would like to see some space fighter games or rpg games and not games that have been offered up 3 or 4 times this year alone?! come on start allowing your veiwers to go and be able to download past games or programs and not have them 1 day only .....maybe offer them for the a week at a time , but come on do something right!!!!!!!!!!!!!
