Today, the game distributor TooMky Games has joined us, I'd like to thank them for contributing to the Game Giveaway of the Day project and hope to see lots more genres over the coming months. Thank you. p.s. I'm hoping to see Shmups, Tower Defense and Breakout games ;)
Catch the Witch
In Brief
A matching pairs puzzle game with hidden object elements.
cath-the-witch-0121

cath-the-witch-018
Introduction:
Alice a young witch that recently graduated from her academy became a student of a master witch called Circe, but turned against her when Circe threatened to turn all the kingdoms princes into frogs unless one of them married her. Alice’s quest is to break the curse that Circe placed on the kingdom. There are 51 levels to work through with more than ten different game modes and 500 objects to sort through.
The game installs to C:\Program Files (x86)\ToomkyGames.com\Catch The Witch by default. If you choose not to install a desktop shortcut, no desktop shortcuts including those to TooMkyGames will be installed.
Whiterabbit-uk 18th August 2019
The Game:
Alice is an amateur level witch living with her uncle in his hut. She recently graduated from the academy of Magical and Arcane Arts and now needs to find a mentor to help her progress from novice to her dream of becoming a high class professional sorceress.
screen-04

Catch-the-Witch-004
The game comprises a collection of Jigsaws, moving panel, and various jumbled pairs and triplet scenes where you have to collect all the pairs and sometimes pairs and triplet groups within a specified time. There are three modes of play the easiest called Very Casual isn’t timed, the Casual mode is timed and the Hard mode has 20% less time than the Casual mode to complete
If you play on one of the timed modes you’ll find some of these puzzles are not as easy as you think, due to the massive number of objects jumbled together. I failed to complete the third level (on three attempts) that required you to find both pairs and triplets within a specified time (3minutes 44 seconds) and ended up using most of the hints I had to complete the level in time. You can earn more hints by completing the level in the time allocated and collecting hidden gems that can be found among the jumbled objects. You need 10 gems to earn a hint.
There are also moving blind puzzles where you have an image sliced vertically into lots of sections, then mixed up. You have to move the various slices into the correct position. The pairs and triplets puzzles are the most common and you’ll find them presented in different ways for example, all the objects are piled on top of each other so you have to move them into the area around the pile and click on pairs as and when you find them (this one is easy) the hardest one I encountered was the find the pairs where they are separated into colour and black and white. Other puzzles include finding pairs from a grid where all the objects are presented on a card that is face down; and finding pairs where one is a large image compared to a much smaller image of the same object.
Catch-the-Witch-005

Catch-the-Witch-006
There is a times (for the two timed modes) and a counter along the bottom of the screen that tells you how many pairs and/or triplets you need to collect before the time runs out. If you fail you just have to redo the level you failed. There are no time penalties if you click on wrong objects. Each puzzle has a story board to introduce it which tells of Alice’s progress in attaining her professional status.
You can see several videos of game play HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE.
Conclusion:
Despite my aversion to hidden object games, this was more like a hidden pairs game where the emphasis was on finding pairs and sometimes triplets of the same object, presented in several different ways (as described above), with a few jig saw puzzles thrown in for good measure. The overall feel of the game was excellent, with easy to very challenging levels (due to time constraints) to complete (though if you choose the very casual mode, all levels should be completed relatively easily). I actually enjoyed playing this until I got stuck on level 7 (the find coloured and monochrome images of the same pairs), which I spent almost 2 hours trying to beat (didn't think to change over to no timed mode lol). The story is entertaining and adds to the overall feel of the game. If you like simple puzzle games that are ideal for all of the family, this is worth a download. Playing it on very casual removes the timed modes and makes for a pleasant game, ideal for a rainy Sunday afternoon of family fun. A thumbs up from me, and a score of 7 out of 10 despite almost pulling my hair out on level 7. This is from TooMky Games, the difference between the version you get via the giveaway and TooMky Games is the ooMky Game installer has been removed; the Toomky games version prompts you to install Avast free antivirus, which you can decline, whereas the giveaway version does not, otherwise it is the same version; so, if you miss today's giveaway you can get it directly from TooMky Games HERE

Hi everyone
Need your tech knowledge and advice please.
Have installed the game (both from gamegiveaway and Toomky website) and it does not work on my system. Icon opens on Windows Explorer task bar and I can hear the game's music but nothing more.
Am running Windows 10 Home on a 64 bit system. Are the problems caused because this is a 32 bit game?
Anyone know how to get the game running please?
Thanks so much x

BigLoveDeb,

Hi BigLoveDeb, Try the following in the order I've listed them:

1) ... Right click on the games executable or shortcut and select properties, then click on the compatibility tab. Change the Operating system to Win 8 or Win 7, and make sure the admin check-box is checked

2) ... While still in compatibility mode check the Run in 640 x 480 screen mode and or disable full screen optimization

3) ... While still in compatibility mode check the Reduced color mode then from the drop down menu (where it says 8 bit (256) colour select While still in compatibility mode check the16 bit (65536) colour

4) ... While still in compatibility mode click on the Change high DPI settings button then check one of the check boxes (the second one first)

5) ... If none of the above work, try changing the monitors resolution. Annoying, but if it gets the game to work, it's only a minute of your time - if you're not sure how to change your monitors resolution, right click anywhere on your desktop )but not on any icon); from the drop down menu select Display Settings. This opens the Display settings. Look for the Scale and layout section and click on the Resolution drop down menu. Select a resolution lower than the one that it is already set at. Usually there will be a list of all the resolutions you can set the monitor to. There will be one that has recommended in brackets. If your settings are already below this then select the recommended settings, otherwise try setting it lower than the one you already have it set to. Make a not of the actual setting you have so that after you have finished playing the game you can reset it back to what it was. Some settings wont be suitable as you'll find some are for different shaped monitors i.e. traditional square and different wide screen types. When you first change the resolution you get several seconds to okay it; if you don't it will revert back to what it was. This way you can ensure you don't select a setting that isn't designed for your monitor. Once you find a size that matches the dimensions of your monitor click on the keep changes button.

voorbijganger, Hi Voorbijganger, unfortunately yes. so long as the fix works for you that is okay, but I had to delete your comment for the reasons I explained last week. It's possible that it was picking up the TooMkyGames installer, which contains low level adware, that earns them sone, some of which goes to pay the developers of the games we are being given. Sorry.

I am really enjoying this game.
Have been coming here for some time and thought it time to say a "Thank you for all the games offered".
I like board games, and HOG's, so every time I see something I like, download with no problems, knowing this is a safe site to come to and visit.
This game is slightly different and very enjoyable.
Thank you once again.

One of my favorite clutter games. The story plot is comical but it's typical of a young witch. She meets characters along the journey which hail from a horror show but she takes it as normal. I really like this genre of hidden objects. I turn the music off as well as any sound effects. The detailing is cartoonish but the items to be found are drawn decently, some lending to the theme. It's my go-to game when I want to busy myself but not have to think too much on what I'm doing.

Downloaded and installed fine on WIn10Homex64. Thus far, the game is fun and somewhat challenging. Graphics are clear and crisp, music and sound fitting. I am playing in casual mode and currently stuck on level 4, having repeated it numerous times but I persevere to get through it in the time limit and, until desperation strikes, without hints. I look forward to continuing it when time allows.

A fresh game from a new distributor. Thank you and welcome TooMky Games! And thank you GGOTD and, as always, Whiterabbit-uk!

I've only gone through the first level so haven't had time to encounter some of the problems others are experiencing. So far, I like this game quite a lot. Nice graphics, not only pretty but easy on the eyes in the sense that it doesn't create eye strain, items are sharp and clear. The music is soothing. I really enjoy this departure from the usual HOG. I've played this kind before, and I'm keeping this one. Thank you ToomkyGames and gotd.

I love this puzzle game! And I didn't even notice that it was a Toomky game until it opened the Toomky webpage after I installed it. BUT, that's all it does! And you don't have to delete any icons or shortcuts once you've installed it. It's a pretty clean installation!

And FYI, you CAN change from "Casual" to "Very Casual" mid-game. You start playing a level that is timed, if that's how you have it set. You play until you fail. You begin the level again. Go to Menu and Options and change it to Very Casual. The level you've started right then will remain with the old setting. But, once you fail and have to begin that level again, it will recognize the new setting and not have a timer ticking away at the bottom. And then, if you want to switch back to timed while you're playing that level, go ahead and do that in Menu, Options and then once you complete the current level untimed, your next level will reflect your new setting. I assume you can keep doing this throughout the game if you keep getting stuck on levels.

Very good game! Thanks GOTD team and thanks for trying out Toomky games. :-)

Oh and also, I've been able to click on things that are still pretty obscured and click on its match. It seems to differ that way from traditional Mahjong games in that an object doesn't seem to have to be completely free to choose it. That's how it is for me so far, anyhow.

Reply   |   Comment by Dax  –  Last month  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

Dax, Thanks for the heads up on the ability to change modes mid game. I'd spent so much time on level seven (almost 2 hours) and needed to finish the review, I had to close the game down without following through. . I promised the giveaway team I'd post a full review seeing as we have a new distributor). (picking out B&W and color matches that I just gave up. I'm more likely to continue with the game now that I know i can change it to very casual. :)

My anti-virus said the set-up file contained a Trojan horse virus. I've never had this problem with games coming from My Play City.

Reply   |   Comment by topazdragon 326  –  Last month  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

topazdragon 326,

Hi Topazdragon 326
TooMky Games are similar to MyPlayCity, relying on the community to download their games, so its unlikely to be a Trojan hidden in one of their games; also, if there was, we would have been inundated with comments from the giveaway community about the security breach. It's more likely to be the usual issue with the Themida wrapper. As Themida code can also hide malware, some anti-malware suites will automatically block or even delete files wrapped in Themida code. If your security won't let you install the game, try one of the three solutions below:

1) ... turn off your security temporarily while you install the game, then reboot the security software.
2) ... White-list the giveaway files with your security
3) ... Reboot your computer in safe mode with networking, install the game, then reboot your computer as normal.

If you are still not happy, try having the zipped file scanned by one of the free online scanners such as Virus Total. Because of the Themida code, you may get a couple of hits due to the reason I mentioned above, but you'll almost certainly find that most of the security programs scanning the zip file will find no malware becasue the file is safe. The other reason to trust the file is because the giveaway site always test all files with the best anti-malware suites before allowing the community to download them and since the giveaway site was opened almost thirteen years ago (Dec 2006) they have NEVER given away a game infected with malware
My scan of the gamegiveaway zip file by virus total yielded 0 hits out of 56. you can see the top end of my results via the image below, or the full results I received after scanning the giveaway HEREl.

Game installed OK on my laptop, runs in windowed mode on my 1920x1080 display (I don't know if this is the minimum); plays OK but I feel like it's a lot of work because every single screen is another puzzle! Either I have to do a jigsaw, or match two or three items, and it's not really a HOG in my book because it's hidden matches, not "find a list of items on this page." Also, it's taking me forever to get to the meat of the story. It's different though, I'll give it that much. I think if you have trouble discerning similar objects among a bunch of other colored objects, this game will be very frustrating to play, but if you are game to try anyhow, it might work out. The other kind of puzzle it has, I don't know the name of it, but there are vertical strips that you have to put in the correct order to make the picture whole. That type I find fairly easy. The jigsaws aren't that hard either if you put the frame together and then fill in the center. Jigsaw pieces lock together when they meet their match in the correct location. Strips lock together and will move as a unit when not in the correct location. in summary, I would call this a puzzle game rather than a HOG.

Reply   |   Comment by Therese S.  –  Last month  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

Therese S., Therese, that was my immediate reaction too. Where's the freaken text already?! Oh, must be on a separate page and you have to write them down or memorize them? Nah, too much work. Ok so that's how it works.
Well worth a shot even if likely give it up after some levels on casual. Did instantly think, gosh something new in the puzzle HOG stale design field. Have to play a bit to see if that's justified.
And about solving jigsaw puzzle techniques. My brainy cousin (kids school teacher now) instructed us to find the 4 corners first since they all share the L shape, then work from outside in. We kids were jumping right in, and center seemed way to go, being fixated on the "fun" of finding "matches". Thought we were more likely to find locks among the mass. Didn't focus on solution, just the sheer finding matches as a short term win. Nice this game will move all the locked pieces as one unit. Big help. See how this goes.
Thanks WR and for hinting to TK about what games the site might like to see.

Reply   |   Comment by JEDIGEG  –  Last month  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

JEDIGEG,
HI, Try reinstalling it to a different location than the default location. also right click on the games shortcut or actual game executable, then select properties from the drop down menu. Once the properties window is open select the compatibility tab. Make sure you have admin rights by selecting the Admin checkbox. Unfortunately I never covered this in the FAQ's thread, so, if you do get it to work following the above instructions, please let me know. Thanks.

Although a shot in the dark, it may also be the wrapper causing the issue, so you could try one of the security fixes such as temporarily turning off your security, or rebooting in safe mode with networking, install then reboot your security or computer.. Only try the above if the first suggestion didn't work.

Whiterabbit-uk, Hi .
Just tried it under Windows 7 and it works just fine ...
In the description of the game I see that the game is
Windows XP compatible .
I am baffled .
On the other hand , maybe there is something wrong with
the installation of my operating system .
Some missing dll , broken driver or something like that .
I think that the day that I will reinstall Windows XP is
closing fast ...
I've found a new edition of Windows XP , called
Windows XP Gold .
I think I will give it a try ...
For now the easiest way to play the "problematic"
games , is to reboot on Windows 7 .
As soon as I will find some time , I will try your solutions .
Thank you very much for your help .

JEDIGEG,

"... I've got the "this is not a valid Win32 application" error ....."

Each new version of Windows [until 10] added features that programmers could use to help them write code easier. And many of those features were added to the latest version of the software Microsoft released for programming. In some cases this means or meant that programmers had to use other programming tools, or write their code in certain ways so that it would work on older Windows versions, e.g. XP, by not using features that those older versions simply did not have.

I believe that in this case the game's developers did not do that, and the game is asking something of XP that it simply cannot provide. Because there's not a specific error code that says more-or-less: "This won't work on your version of Windows", you get the generic Win32 message.

JEDIGEG, Excellent couple solutions offered per Admin rights & redoing.
It's possible the .dll required got deleted somehow OR belongs to your graphics card. If updating/redoing card's driver doesn't fix then if you can determine the specific .dll, download it from the many sites, install into PC, cross fingers.
Given the wide range of Win versions stated here it could be your gear (card) since system .dll would be such a common one that problem comes down to externals like a graphics card driver needing something. Your GTX460 is way last gen so might encounter such behavior ahead. Even cheap used-new GTX900s will get job done for majority of these low level games even recent ones. g/l

beergas, Hi .
Thank you for the answer , ideas and solutions .
About the upgrade , I would love to , BUT I am without
a job from 2014 , so for now , it's not applicable ... but
I will try to update the driver of the graphics card .
Let's hope that this will solve the problem .
The problem is that when I boot from Windows 7 , I am
using the same hardware and drivers and the game works
just fine .
Maybe something else is the reason of the malfunction .

JEDIGEG, hmm If Win 7 ok (assuming same PC as XP one?) then XP must be lacking .dll so run in Windows 7, the command in Windows shell (as Admin) that scans your XP for any missing file (s). If result comes up Ok then that's about as far as I could go. Perhaps there might be something added in a recent 900 series driver from Nvidia if you've not been staying up to date there.
Sorry about your $ position restricting your computer situation.
We all have our priorities to deal with.

Nope... even on "Casual" mode, way too much time pressure trying to sort out the jumbles of objects.
I don't "buy" games in order to have to keep repeating the same levels over and over until some random number generator gives me a pile that can be sorted within an arbitrary time limit.

Really too bad too, because this game has a different approach from the usual "hidden object game" we usually see.

Reply   |   Comment by BobR  –  Last month  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

BobR,
Hi Bob, you can play the game on very casual where no level is timed, so the game can be played at your own pace. I agree that having to play a level over and over, which I did with level 7 (spent almost 2 hours trying to progress), then gave up and didn't feel like working through levels 1 to 7 again even without the timer.. Maybe I will at later date.

Whiterabbit-uk, "didn't feel like working through levels 1 to 7 again even without the timer". hmm I was looking in review as to whether or not feature of in-game switching modes is available. Guess not so which is bit nasty. Have formed habit when playing a new type of game/designer that I just play a level or two. Exit & reload to see what is saved or allowed as to things like switching or level save. Best games worn you whether leaving now will force replaying level (or worse like from first level). Same goes for ones that allow for switching character within game/level. Does that reset you back to initial status or not. Things good to know especially when lot of these small games come w/o instructs.

On Level 6 you are to hold down the cursor and drag the items from off the pile, so you can match them. I was not able to use my cursor to move them. If I use a "hint" they will separate and be clicked to remove, but cannot point and drag to remove. Will not be able to complete the game so will uninstall it, unless somebody can figure out another way to drag and drop for me.

Thanks for all the cool games. Enjoy your life with your family... :-)

Sunnie, I couldn't get the pieces to move either so I looked for similar colors and kept clicking. Actually added some challenge to the level. It was harder on the level where one set was black and white and the other was color but still doable if you are up for the challenge.
I like the game, it is a good time waster.

Sunnie, Hi Sunnie, I didn't have any problems dragging each object off the pile in the middle. I separeated about 12 before I found my first match, from then on it was very easy. Probably thje easiest match ing pairs level in the whole game.

Reply   |   Comment by Whiterabbit-uk  –  Last month  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Sunnie,
I had the same experience as Nancy (and you, apparently)... couldn't move the pieces.
I tried Shift-Click and Alt-Click and pretty much everything I could think of, but they just wouldn't move.
So I hit on the same thing Nancy did... you have to click the points and curls of the various pieces, watch them bounce up and down, and try to find points and curls of another piece that matches.
Takes a LONG time (remember that the pieces aren't all necessarily oriented in the same direction), but it CAN be done.

Sunnie, I think it's a bit like Mah-Jong in that you have to mostly click items that are free and unencumbered. I did find that this varies from one puzzle to the next because sometimes it didn't apply. I think it's down to the programmer!

Whiterabbit-uk, I encountered the same problem and after 10 minutes
trying to drag the objects and falling , I had to use Nancy's solution .
It worked but it resulted to loose 3 gems .
I will Google for a solution and I will post any findings later on .

Sunnie,
After playing through the game most of the afternoon, I noticed some odd things happening...
There are several other levels that have the same problem... you're supposed to move the pieces by clicking and holding the mouse, but nothing happens and they stay in one big pile.
But- partway through the game I noticed it started working!
I didn't do anything different to "fix" it, just all of a sudden it started grabbing the pieces and moving them when I held the mouse button down.... for a while... before I'd gotten through the pile, moving things out of the way it randomly STOPPED working again.
Took a long time to work through the remaining matches just messing with the edges of the pile, but eventually I got through it.
Then the next time this type of puzzle showed up, the same thing happened... it just seems to be random as to whether or not it'll move the pieces.
Oh well... at least it's possible to proceed, even though it takes forever.

BobR, You need to change difficulty to casual for those levels.
