R Linder...
your comment: "As a parent, I’m not entirely pleased with the message sent by “spend money on yourself to keep your mood up, in order to do your job well without losing customers”

I believe if you look at it in a different light, you may rethink this stand...
Here is how I thought of this aspect: When one has a comfortable home for their family, they are happier, easier to get along with and more productive. It never occurred to me to think of it as "spend more selfish $$ on me and I make more $$." I just know that when one's home life is comfortable, they can usually focus better at work and get more done.

JMHO.

UPDATED comment:

I have played this game 2 times to the credits! it is a good game. It is not too challenging, but give you something to "decompress" with. Which is how I am using the game. It's cool the way you get to build your own house... take some strategy to balance your $$ and upgrade you shop while building your home. All in all... it just may be a great game to teach with. JMHO.

as i said in my last post, i knew i was pretty much at the end. to satisfy my own curiosity, i played further. i was told to earn $5k, which i did easily. the chick on the right told me i was getting a gift. i was hoping it was a new cake shop, so i could start again. Alas, it was THE CREDITS. Oh yes. The developers thought that their gift to me was THEIR OWN NAMES. lame.

as i said, fun to play for a bit. a keeper, in fact, to come back to occasionally. but also, as i said, i would have been very very upset if i bought it :)

and, again, GGAOTD!!!

a game that held my interest for a number of hours, which is certainly better than some. that being said, i am very glad i got this game for free. I downloaded it around 10am CST. Since then, I played for a bit, did some other things online, worked 8 hours, did alot of other stuff online, and played some more. It is now midnight CST. After that second bit of playing, i have bought all upgrades AND finished building the house. i don't expect a game to reach the un-upgradable this quickly.

as i said, not a bad game. kept my interest MUCH longer than most games, and certainly longer than most games here. but i would have been VERY upset if i had purchased this game. thanks ggaotd!

For those who are saying this is a good game for 5 year olds, I completely disagree... My daughter loves time management games, but doesn't use any mouse with one hand, as you must to do well in this game... It is an excellent, albeit easy, time management game... I've finished my game, and am almost done with my daughter's game...

Well, I've downloaded it, and installed without difficulty on XP. Runs fine, and the graphics have a degree of panache to them, though of course they're far from pushing the envelope in terms of what's possible these days. I must say, for characters who look like they were created in something like Poser, it would have been nice to see some slightly more believable positions to justify all the time I spent looking at someone who looked like she should come in a shocking pink plastic package from Mattel.

Definitely it's a "Time Management" game, as I'm seeing them called here -- along the lines of Cake Mania, Jane's Hotel, Diner Dash, et al.

Having played a fair bit of Cake Mania, I actually found the cake assembly process less challenging on this game; the ability to serve any finished item to any matching waiting customer using nothing more than a right click was a mixed blessing, as it made play distinctly easier, perhaps losing some of the challenge as a result. It does definitely lower the frustration factor, though.

I like the fact that there are a wider than normal range of added menu items which you can equip the cafe with, over time, and the potential for good or bad service that creates, due to the delay in preparing each of these items if you don't have a serving ready and waiting when the customer orders them. I was a little surprised, though, to see that extraneous pre-prepared menu items, and discarded cakes, don't count against your score. I like that element of Cake Mania, and think that it would create a valuable extra challenge here, as it would force the player to keep an eye on the clock in order to balance the chance of another order for that item coming in before closing time, against the risk of delay if the item isn't ready and waiting for the customer.

The use of the stars to highlight the "Fittings" and "Construction" items on the between-levels menu is nice, as it lets the player know when there is the option of adding the next fitting, or home element -- but it seems to be somewhat inconsistent, or else the rules which define when the stars appear aren't as clear to the player as they might be. They are definitely a useful aid on the first few levels, but I note that on one later level, their absence caused my daughter to overlook the option of purchasing a new cafe fitting, causing her to spend her earnings on a housing item instead, delaying her ability to raise her per-level earnings from the cafe. A clear description of the rules governing the stars would be a welcome addition to this game, although I might suggest putting it into an "advanced help" menu or something of the sort, giving a "quick start" rule overview that can get the player up and running without reading all of the minutiae of the game.

All in all, a worthy entrant into the TM game selections, well suited to gamers who prefer this kind of action/puzzle game to one which is strictly mental, or strictly hand/eye coordination -- and the lack of violent imagery makes this a nice option in the non-violent games class, as well.

Play lacks some of the challenges of competing games in this class, such as Cake Mania, and the Barbie-esque main character could stand to be a bit less plastic in her appearance and positioning. A better articulation of the role of the housing construction as an expense element to be balanced against the cafe fitting expenses, while taking into account its role in keeping the character's mood good enough that her customers won't get impatient and leave, would be a very useful addition. As a parent, I'm not entirely pleased with the message sent by "spend money on yourself to keep your mood up, in order to do your job well without losing customers", but as a game player, I think it does add another interesting element to the game.

All in all, it was a worthwhile download, and I can see why fans of the genre would spend the money to buy a commercial copy of the game. It's probably a better option for some of the younger players than its more challenging counterparts, and I know that on days when my frustration tolerance is low, my memory is not at its best (a VITAL element of counterparts such as Cake Mania, but not so relevant here), or I'm having trouble getting the touchpad positioned where I want it to be, this will probably be the game I turn to, rather than fraying my temper on Cake Mania by making redundant cakes due to having forgotten what's in the oven at any given time. I also like the fact that unlike Jane's Hotel, there's none of this scrolling back and forth to see off-screen information which can sink your ability to pass a given level -- at least, within the levels I've reached on this game, so far.

If I had to give the game a rating (not something I'm experienced at), I'd say it's above average in playability, a little less challenging than its counterparts, and the graphics, while quite adequate by today's standards (and a little less cartoony than something like Cake Mania), are just missing those extra qualities of pose and expression which would make them shine -- so, maybe 3.5 out of 5 stars, overall?

This is one we'll be keeping in the household game collection, for a while at least. I'd say its target audience would be non-violent game players, maybe in the younger set, or those looking for something that's quite playable and enjoyable, but not too frustrating to play when you've had a bad day. It's carved out a distinct niche for itself among the TM games, by its differences, good and bad (which ones are which, I'll leave up to you). Not just another clone -- and those little variations make all the difference in the world.

I evaluated this game for real arcade, and loved it! I put it on my list of evaluation games to buy, but thanks to GOTD, I get to save the money! In this game, you manage a shop. You make tips and use the tips to build a house and to improve the shop. If you find that you are getting too much stuff in your shop, you can go build on your house instead of upgrading the shop.

Played 17 days of the online on Big Fish. I recommend people trying that first. Nice game, but probably for kids, not adults. The online game doesn't have house building, so I might have found that interesting. It may also lack other early stage features in the online game. Most especially, unlike some other games of this type, doesn't allow you to shop. In the online game you just acrue money until the next item - coffee maker, soda machine, etc., pops into the shop. Found the day's too short, at least in the early days I played. If you make an efficiency mistake, not putting on the next cup of coffee for example, your usually, as the boxer's say, saved by the bell. The most customers it fed to me was 10 in a day. If your cruising, that's not challenging enough. Also the clicking of the cake parts can be imprecise in the flash game. Sometimes you have to hover around clicking the cake pieces 2 and often 3 times before it slides onto the stack.

I think the bottom line here is this is not much of an adult game. As many said, it's mainly a clicker. There's no real strategy that matters, just click fairly quickly. I'm not very coordinated. I usually can't keep up with a good shooter, and I had no trouble here. It doesn't really reflect the real food restaurant challenge, mouse clicking is a lot easier than having to move throughout a real restuarant space - everything's just a slight role away - and it allows you to unrealistic things leave sodas already drawn in the machine. Ever heard of flat sodas? And there's no real strategy you can apply. No real time management in the time management. It's possible that the flash game is so limited it doesn't reflect the real game feel, but why? Most of the flashes I've played gave me a good feel for the game and whetted my apetitte. It wouldn't make sense to do it any other way. I could download the demo, but I think htere's has to be some room here for people to give opinions who just don't have time to be daily software testers and have to pick and choose their spots. Again, the flash is probably representative and why have an online flash if it isn't.

I can see folks getting it for the kids, and I can see people who just want to click repeatedly and turn their minds off, with a little bit of time clock tension - after all I'm a match 3 freak. But if you don't fall into those categories, this probably isn't for you. As others have said here, there are better (a lot better) time management games out there.

But, 19.95 is a representative price, and because it will definitely give enjoyment to some, as indicated by the high thumbs up: I have to say Good Giveaway GGOTD. Because of this, I'll stay neutral and not click thumbs up or down.

This is a decent time management game but I downloaded it and played it through in just a couple of hours so $19.95 seems a bit steep. I found it very easy throughout and didn't have to repeat a single level (something I've had to do with other TM games) because I always received and "excellent service" assessment which means the levels weren't much of a challenge. It would be nice to be able to skip the intro and repetitive dialogue between the girl and the contractor/vendor. The loading was a bit slow and although the house building seemed sort of "off-topic" at first, I ended up enjoying the diversion.

I consider this more of a beginner TM game or for younger players but it made for an enjoyable afternoon so I would rate it a 7/10. Thanks Elefun and GOTD for the chance to try it.

This game is boring & doesn't compare to Jane's Hotel. Jane's Hotel is much more fun, with graphics that can be enjoyed even by an adult. Cake Shop has over sexualized the look of the 3 people making the game inappropriate for young girls or boys.

The story and graphics are so lame. Then again, the main character pays for an airline flight, (apparently) buys a car, builds a house, and gets a $5000 vacation bonus after working in a cake shop (dressed like a tramp) for only 50 days-- I guess she didn't waste that new college degree after all.

I really liked the game and I loved the fashionista barbie girls. The skill level is beginner to intermediate. An adult can beat the game in about 3 hours but it's still worth the $10. Games where you can build and decorate seem with progression seem to do well. Thanks ggotd! This one's a hit!

Thank you Elf Games and GGAOTD for offering this game today. The dsl download and setup took under 4 minutes on my Windows XP and runs without any issues.
While I have played a few 'time management games' in the past, this one seems ok for an adult, but would be best for younger kids. Yes, she looks a bit like 'Barbie' so maybe that will help.
Overall, it seeems like a nice game, some the the cake layer look very much alike (white cakes) and maybe it will get a bit harder later on (at level 3).
As for paying $20.00, I am glad that I got to try this one out for free ... I will keep this one around for a few weeks and see...

Good "doable" game without the racing frustrations I've had with some other TM games on giveaway. Wonderful not to have to DRAG purchase to customer; much quicker & spares carpal tunnel. Making outside choices on the house is good for kids' math skills etc. Only suggestion: if person does EXCELLENT work on any day, couldn't they have a 'normal' mood for a change? Satisfaction in life is gained not ONLY from what we purchase. Thanks creation team & Giveaway for the best TM game I've tried here.
