This game is outstanding, good graphics and a lot of fun to play. I do wish there was a way that we could see ahead of time which games would be given away the following weekend.

I downloaded this game and played it. it was easy to install and easy to play. You can play up to four players or play the computer. Have not played Dominos in years but I did enjoy this software.

I had no problems in downloading (Windows XP) and have already played a few of the different domino games. This is a good little game - relaxing with no pressure. Though no shortcut is automatically added at download, a shortcut can be created just as you do for other files and be added to your desktop. Thank you for repeating this game - I am new to the site and I am glad to have another chance to get past-offered software.

Just a quik line here. The game installed just fine, (winXP pro),
and it plays wonderfully. The graphics are sharp, and the music player is a very nice touch. If you missed this one then it is a shame. This is one of the better offerings.

re: #38: actually it foes mess up in registry. I just deleted all folder from that directory ,where game was installed. Checked registry, and found 5 different registry entries which was done by that game. Then deleted entries in registry, and rebooted pc, didnt founded any problems with display drivers anymore, so this game wasn lucky for me, coz it done some lets say unexpected problems to my pc. Ihave Vista premium btw. May be its just me , who had problems :)

Hi Betty, Just go over to the forums (see the button at the top of the page. There's usually at least one of the games on the front page of the forums. Click on the Games discussion bit and it will take you to a list that usually includes the last few weeks I've posted. All the games I post are available 24/7 and 365 and a quarter days a year. :)

Hi gpc111, I’ve noticed that every week you post the same thing about how all the games are repeats. Since July 19th we've had 30 games of which only 11 have been repeats. If you go back further you'll find that there has also been quite a few non repeats way back to when the game giveaway went to weekends only. The games that haven't been given away before since mid July are as follows:

Monkeys Tower
Cake Shop
Bumpy Jumpy
Brave Alchemist
Dungeons & Monsters
Brave Dwarf
Last Samurai
Around the world in 80 days
Mysterious City: Golden Prague
Mythic Adventure
Shellblast
Rock Legend
Callsign Hunter
Assault Droid
Supernova Galactic Wars
Alien Terminator
Astro Avenger 2
Fashion Story
Starship Tycoon

Okay, many of these may not be to your liking, but they definitely haven't been given away previously.

You've got to remember that the games being given away are commercial games that developers expect to get paid for usually. I'm sure as we all tighten our belts (due to the impending financial crisis), fewer of us are going to part with our hard earned cash, so the original premise that probably helped to pull in the punters is probably not working as well as previously. I know for certain (because I asked someone at the developers site) that Alawar don't intend giving any more games away anytime soon. It must be really hard for the game giveaway administrators to persuade distributors to give games away considering that there are thousands of downloads each day.

I'm quite happy to sit back and wait for the occasional gem such as Around the world in 80 days. I personally buy most of my games anyway, so the game giveaway is really just a little extra for me. If I really like a game that's given away here, I'll usually purchase it anyway as I believe the more money a developer gets the more chance there will bethat they will plow that money back into making better games. It seems to me that many arcade games today are becoming a little stale due to jumping on the bandwagon. There’s rarely a really outstanding or original game released these days. Though I recently bought World of Goo which I’d classify as a classic. Of course there are lots of great DVD based games around as well, but these can be as expensive as $70 or even more if you buy one of the deluxe versions that come in steel boxes or have extras added; Last year I (stupidly) paid nearly $120 for a collectors edition of Silent Hunter 4, a brilliant submarine simulator that came in a large tin made up to look like the external skin of a submarine, a really nice identification chart, a medal, arm patches, pen and note book (for noting game parameters during play), a DVD of the in game music as well as a documentary about WWII submarines plus some more stuff, and this year I bought a collectors edition of all of the original Total War series that included loads of extras, (though that one was on offer for only $30, a fantastic bargain considering you got Shogun Total War, Shogun Total War: The Mongol Invasion, Medieval Total War, Medieval Total War: Viking Invasion, Rome Total War, Rome Total War: Barbarian Invasion as well as a loads of goodies such as some beautiful postcards, Artwork, documentary and soundtrack plus some other stuff. ( I'm buying a DVD based game virtually every week and have over a thousand purchased arcade games and countless freeware and abandonware games), yet I still find the Game Giveaway project fantastic.

Marcie, I doubt you'd find a version of dominoes of such caliber as today's giveaway, especially for free, unless you use Warez sites.

Regards

Stephen

p.s.

Sorry NotAGamer. I just read my previous comment which includes a comment about your comment. It seems unduly harsh, which wasn't my intention; I hope you didn't take it personally as I didn't mean to sound so negative.

p.p.s.

Also sorry to go on so above; I just find such negativity so unfair when the giveaway staff do a great job trying to provide a unique service to the masses. It seems the game comments section is starting to look like the giveaway section more and more as time passes. That is, there’s a lot more complaining and less gratitude being shown. I’m also sure that the comments put off prospective developers and distributors from contributing. (though I may be wrong)

To the giveaway team, I'd like to say Thank you so much for the service you provide. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it and still look forwards to the days that there's going to be a game. I rarely download any of the applications these days

#44, I have been a member of this site for about a year now, and this is the first time I can recall seeing this, or any other, dominoes game. Though I have seen a few games/computer software repeats, they haven't been repeated more than twice, and not too close together.

#27, I also got the same error message. However, I noted that the default installation was for Documents and Settings\Start Menu\Programs\Games. The game will not load if it's saved there. I have found it works great if you change the installation destination to C:\Games. So give that a try, and see if it works for you.

I haven't had a chance to play much yet, but this really looks like a good game, and I'm pleased with the graphics so far. Can't wait to spend some time tonight or tomorrow getting further into it all. Thanks GAOTD!

Some comments for the late comers like me:
To those who are constantly disturbed by programs without an installer, this is not sloppiness by the developer. I'm firmly in Doc Immortal's (38) corner here. In fact, I've been firmly in that corner for many years. This type of program is often called standalone or self-contained. If you give me the ear of developers of, at least smaller programs, I would say: give me standalone, give me standalone, GIVE ME STANDALONE. There's a great poster on the daily giveaway page named Fubar who (and occassionally others do too) often analyzes what changes the giveaway makes to your system. Also, another sharp user - Mike - has turned me on to ERUNT, which can protect your registry in an easier fashion than setting a restore point. And many over there have recommended Revo Uninstaller, which does an exceptional job of cleaning your system after an uninstall.

Still, if all I have to do is note where the destination folder is during the install, then go there and make my own desktop shortcut -after all it's just a right mouse click after you go there with Windows Explorer - that strikes me as significantly easier than cleaning up gunk from an install. I'm not criticizing - suit yourself - but I think that once you learn the easy ways of dealing with standalones you'll never want to go back.

34 - Skymama, you don't have to have another person.

37 - Marcie, if you come back, please tell use about some of those other games. I searched for free ones and really only found one that had multiple games (and, also editable rules, like Buku Dominoes) - called Canasis Dominoes. It's tied to an online service which also has other games, but can be played offline, and it's download is only one third the size. It didn't try the online demo, because I didn't want to play against other players when testing software. I like to take my time when testing.

I first found it on this site:
http://www.domino-games.com/domino-software/dominoes-freeware.html
which is worth checking out anyway, because it features all kinds of freeware and shareware for dominos - but it's almost all shareware. However, it also has a couple of other platform dominoes freewares worth checking: Linux, Pocket PC, and Palm PC.

You might want to check out Canasis Dominoes, but, unless Marcie can give us other alternatives, today's giveaway could be a real bargain. I've decided not to download because I don't think I want to add learning dominoes to all my other hobbies. If I did, I'd probably follow Suki's philosophy in the forums and learn it with the enjoyment of human companionship. I think most games that can be played with real people are better with real people, and the computer is for when that's not practical.

Very nice. Several domino games to choose from, lots of pretty backgrounds that slide show each hand and a ton of domino die patterns to choose from, default music is also nice!

Runs well on Vista Home Premium. Only drawback is you have to create a shortcut from C:\games\Buku Domino. Not sure how they can do this great programming, yet can't have it put a shortcut on the desktop upon installation.

Still, all in all a good game.

re #22. The install is a simple unzip to a directory. That means to uninstall, you go to the directory you installed it in and delete the directory. It won't be in the add/remove programs.

This means:

a) It's a less intrusive progeam. It doesn't add DLLs in a windows directory and then "forget to remove them" when uninstalled (or overwrite newer DLLs with older ones, thus messing up other games). It doesn't mess with your registry. So, that means there won't be registry data left after an uninstall (some developers don't properly remove entries during an uninstall).

b) You can put the game on a flash drive any pop it into any PC to play it or put it on a network drive (installing it just once) and access it from everywhere.

I personally like unintrusive programs as they won't mess up with the Windows environment, won't mess with the registry, won't install over or uninstall DLLs that are used by other programs.

Shorty, comment #27, have you tried changing your screen resolution then trying the game? It's just a though as I noticed the error message also mentioned a screen resolution. I tried to locate a free download of the missing file, but the only one available was for a torrent download and I had a couple of red sites pop up while on the sites page, so shut it down.

Creative comment #27, you can uninstall by deleting the file. I have World in Conflict, so tried to play it and it plays fine for me after playing Dominoes.

NotaGamer comment #15, I thought computer games were real. Your argument reminds me of the discussions I've heard about Vinyl v CD and real money v electronic money or the old negative film and digital; thankfully technology enables us to move on and experience better ways of playing games listening to music, taking photographs (the latest digital cameras take better pictures than any negative film ever will). Both sides of the argument are as valid. Of course (as Suki points out in the forums), it is much nicer to be able to play with humans, but then a lot of computer games do have that facility as well. Not only that you can pick up on some games any time you like and can be guaranteed to find hundreds if not thousands of people online playing the same game, and that includes the whole range of board games that we all know and love. Still were all entitled to our own opinions.

ProfX comment #26, thanks for pointing that out, though I didn't actually say that the last time this was given away it didn't create a shortcut. I said "As usual with this developer, the installation doesn’t create a desktop shortcut" :)

Have a great week folks.

Another repeat giveaway…

I know this is free and thank for that…

But if you are going to just do repeats…

Offer stuff everyday…

I could not agree more. Matter of fact, I remember way, way, back when game give away of the day stated this weekend game stuff was only temporary.
What happened ????? Besides, these games are only repeats. You may as well give these away daily as their is nothing new being given away as we were once told that we would see new games given away only on weekends.
Ware are these new games ? I have been waiting for months and months only to see the same ole same ole week after week. Like suggested, you may as well go back to daily game give away as absolutely nothing has changed here, sadly.

The program offers alot but changing default music and backgrounds

crashes the program. Playing without changing defaults seems to work.

I have installed, uninstalled and may attempt one more time to

install because the program is unique in its many possibilities.

Many times a program comes with defaults that some users may not like.

This program offers a wide range of OPTIONS as far as default goes but

the program is not handling changers to its default very well. I am

interested in this program but I am exhausted trying to set my

own options. Is there anyway someone can assist in solving this

problem.

I'm not a dominoes player particularly, but this seems to be a good implementation. I always find it surprising that this company's install is like that of an old DOS game from the 80's or early 90's. You need to locate the folder and make your own shortcut. Is this to save them programming costs? People with few computer skills might not have the slightest idea what to do about this.

This instals on Vista Home Premium with no problems whatsoever - and you don't need to worry about selecting compatibility mode. It automatically selects C:\Games as the install folder but there is a browse button so you can easily select your own folder.

The graphics are brilliant - not too fancy to get in the way of playing a good game but good enough to make you want to keep this game. You will hardly need the help file to play the standard game - just click on the tile you want to play and drag it to the appropriate end - the computer will automatically rotate the dominoe for you. The computer plays two of the hands - you play the third.

Because the games are fairly short, this is a game you can play when you've only got a few spare minutes - but be warned, it is very easy to fall into the "just one more game" trap !!

There are not too many dominoe games available and this is one of the better ones, if not the best, that I've seen and that includes commercial games. If a registration fee WAS required for this game, I would have been more than willing to pay, because it's such an enjoyable game, but "Thanks" to Game Giveaway Of The Day we can have this game for nothing.

WhiteRabbit, re: your comment in 3. Actually, the last time this was offered in September 07, it was a full installer that installed shortcuts and everything. It looks like this time they just RAR'd up the game folder, packaged it with a self extracter and then wrapped it in their installer. I'm not sure why the difference, but I have two machines that I installed on previously and those both have desktop shortcuts and Start Menu shortcuts.

Overall a good game. There are some unimportant animation errors (dealing out the dominoes), the "lowest wins" variations declare the winner of the last set to be the winner of the game overall, and several variations don't properly follow the rules that are included for them.

Sure, it may be a repeat, but there aren't many dominoes games by comparison with other genres, and it was out of rotation for over a year.

Favorite game: Chickenfoot. Hands down thumbs up.

I do not have much time for games, but this seemed like a game that includes some stratagy and is based on a real game that has been played for many many years, tried it and it is very enjoyable, hope to have more spare time to play this in the future, if not i will look forward to retirement in some nice quite village in Tuscany where i can play the real thing! thanks a lot.
