While this was a long game, which is always good, and it had a story, which is also always good - this was not only an extremely dark game but a frustrating one as well. It is another HOG that does not have the option of moving from place to place via the map, but rather requires you go through every screen, which can be extremely time consuming - especially if you're at the "end" of the map and are required to go all the way back to the "beginning" of it. While frustrating, it would not be so bad except for the hint function, which isn't much of a hint function at all. You hit hint and it says "there is nothing to do here", which means, if you're really stuck, you have to go through every single screen in the entire game and hit hint to find out what the actual hint is. This one only gets a 3 out of 5 from me.

Finally finished this game! Firs, thank you so much. This is a nice, long game with great graphics, an interesting story, good mini games and nice HO scenes. The map is horrible. It is not interactive and not very clear on how to go from one map to the other. I did check the walkthrough on the BF blog and any game that has to 'back up 9 times' etc. is silly. Any map should be interactive. I also agree about the placement of the Menu and Hint buttons. I would love to just proof read the HO scenes before these games are released. It is so frustrating to look and look and finally find something with a totally wrong label. There really is no reason to have so many things with the wrong name is this game of otherwise high quality. thanks for all you do.

This game is diabolical! It sucked the time out of my evening and I may end up as bald as a wig stand from pulling my hair out trying to remember where the other half of a certain object is. The graphics are stunning. I commended the ambient sound and the voice actors for pacing and enunciation, something that often bothers me in other games. I found the music a bit wearing on my psyche, but then, I was dealing with a diabolical murderer, right? Amazing twisted fun.

The only thing that I do not like so far are the name of the game, opening splash screens and the shortcut icon. Silly I know, but I don't feel they convey the story - at least not yet. If this is part of a series, forgive me. As a stand alone game, I would make it "title-- part of the --game-- series"

Thank you for the generous game Playrix and to GGoD for bringing it to us.

HI!
It took time again to download, not as long as yesterdays, but some time! I feel like its a bit slow going. You have to find one thing at a time again
and go back and forth, no interactive map to click on for easier travel!! Some it seemed very typical of these games being for me having done
3 or 4 in a row lately. The graphics are good and game movement is very easy.
Thank you for another good game!
Have a great week!
Lee

Downloaded the file 6 times. Each time took 2 hours and each time I got an error "file invalid". I guess I am out of luck as with all these big size files.

............................Moderator comment..............................

If you are constantly getting problems like this, I'd recommend using a download manager. Someone recommended a free one above, just look through the comments. what download managers do is download the file in several packets, then stitch them back together. This speeds up the download process and also prevents problems with failed downloads, in that if the link is interrupted, the file will still be complete once stitched together.

As a previous community member mentions, there are ethical issues using a download manager, for one, it takes more of the bandwidth of the server that is donating the file.

Rayven, is it possible that another user of your computer systems has done something to prevent you from installing files from Game Giveaway? I think there's a number of ways in which your setting up of games could be blocked. You'd have to ask other users who are administrators.

bovi: are you clicking on the "setup.exe" file with the orange key icon? "setup.gcd" is just the security file, which you should ignore.

Very nice game. The voice acting is above par and the graphics are very good. Many puzzles are trickier than is typical and there was one or two that were a little tough to solve due to shoddy instructions. The tiles one was incredibly difficult to discern the picture you were meant to be matching. The map was very useful but when the only recourse was to solve for an unopened door, the map was of no use and the Hints button told me nothing. The end sequence was excellent. All in all a very nice game.

Lovely game, thanks.

The only complaint I have is that although there is a map there is no way of getting from one place to another without going through all the rooms again, backwards and forwards, to pick up one item and then use it and then do the same with the next thing. It's a touch frustrating.

For the first time the GOTD won't install, it complains that "The key cannot be decrypted". I have enough hidden object games waiting for me to get around to them, so I'm not too peeved, just letting you know that there may be some new variation to cover in the FAQ on the theme of activation failing.

Maybe it needs to reach some server to unlock the setup.gcd file, and that server is down at the moment? Just guessing.

Norton's will not let me install it. It says SONAR has detected a threat

..........................Moderator comment...............................

Hi Carolyn, Norton is notorious for this problem. The only way around it is to temporarily turn off norton till the game has been installed. Just to assure you giveaway games are througly tested with several well known anti malware suites and that in the almost 9 years the project has been live, there has never been a game infected with malware. Todays game has been downloaded almost 15 thousand times so far with only one a couple of other community members coming across this issue, and both of which use Norton.

For the past two years the giveaway team have included security which includes a themida wrapper. It is that that Norton is seeing as a threat. I can assure you that the files contained within the zip file you downloaded are 99.99999% safe, and, as already mentioned above, 15 thousand other community members have safely installed the game so far. :)

Took me near a month to notice, missing several good games

Does your system clock show Today?

I have this game on my Mac and it is astoundingly good. I am now trying to download it onto my Windows 7 and am having problems as to the length of time it is taking and the frequent blackouts which occur as it is downloading. I have never had a problem with a GGOTD on any of my other PCs, past or present. Is this the fault of the game or the fact that my Windows 7 PC is not delivering properly?
I am tempted to blame Windows 7 as it is an awful program but I've tried several times in the past to download this when it was offered and failed every time.
Whiterabbit, Hello, and tell your son that I highly recommend Oxford when it is time to make a decision.

..............................Moderator Comment................................

Thanks Jetta. My brother-in-law went to Oxford, so I'm familair. Personally I prefer Cambridge to Oxford, though I do think the Bodleian libary has an edge over Cambridge's library, but only just. I've used both libraries for my research when I was a post grad student. I was attached to Cambridge when I worked at the Plant Breeding Institute before it was sold off to private commercial enterprises in the late 80's.

Callum is thinking of Manchester as it's basically 15 miles from home. We would like him to experience independent living by staying in Student accommodation, but in reality, with the cost of education now and the cost of accommodation, it may be more practical if he travelled into his lectures each day from home.

We do have an insurance policy that mature just before he starts university, which may be able to pay for accommodation and the university fees, so it may be a moot point, but as the policy is an endowwment policy it's not faired well over the 23 years we've had it so far. It's projected to only give us 55% of the original that was quoted, so it may not be enough for both my childrens university education. We shall have to wait and see as there's still two years to run on that policy before it matures.

Hi, JimF - thanks for the warning. I shut down Norton 360 before installing Brink of Consciousness: Dorian Gray Syndrome. I've had Norton block setup files from Playrix Games that I've downloaded from Game Giveaway before, and Norton has always later (too much later) told me that the files have been "exonerated." Norton always notifies me that it has blocked files due to SONAR.Heuristic.120, but doesn't notify me when it has been found that the files are harmless. I turned off Norton real-time anti-virus protection and SONAR and installed the game, then ran a scan which found no problems. Norton 360 uploads "problem" files and tests them, and then, some time later, declares the files "exonerated." Getting information on Norton's test results from the Norton interface is hard work.

................................Moderator Comment................................

I stopped using Norton years ago. I used to love the norton toolset you could get way back in the 90's. Now i find the software over priced and no where near as good as it used to be. Just my personal opinion.

I'm stuck. I've disabled the wall of fire and chased Oscar the sadistic killer down the elevator and into a weird back yard with a collapsed archway, a locked garage, and a well that has water but no bucket or rope. The game installed very quickly and easily and runs very well on my Windows 7 32-bit system. This game is quite spooky and is quite different from most of the other games that I've gotten from Giveawayoftheday.com. Graphics, videos, and sound are all really great. The game has hidden object segments but is much more complicated and interesting than most HOGs. I need to find one more radio dial, a rope, a coin for the slot machine, two more billiard balls, a couple of keys, a mask-like symbol, and a couple of missing parts, and I got so interested in this game that I played it for too long and I'm running late. If you're not upset by dead bodies here and there, then download and play Brink of Consciousness: Dorian Gray.

Luckily, I spotted it before clicking either MENU or HINT, but this game has these buttons exactly the opposite way around from other games (e.g. Alawar).

PLEASE, developers, unless you are have to do it this way because someone has told you to "cease and desist" because you're infringing somebody else's patents or suchlike, DON'T mess with the placement of those items on the screen!

MENU on LEFT; HINT on RIGHT; please!

I Started playing this and in the first five minutes of play I ran into a couple of discrepancies already. First problem the developers need to repair is the guitar tuner. It got stuck on the 3rd or D string and made me skip the rest of the puzzle. It needs fine tuning (no pun intended), and the second problem I've noticed is the billiards ball that you pick up in the hallway when you first enter the mansion. The game calls it a cue ball when in fact it's a #3 billiards ball. The cue ball is usually white. If I run into any more errors they can email me for a possible job at home as a playtester. Thanks GGOTD.

................................Moderator Comment................................

Hi Jim, Alawar are always looking for play testers. I used to beta test for then until they stopped giving the games we tested away. They decided to give us a 40% discount instead. I used to beta test because I enjoyed it, but got too used to getting free games. :) I shouldn't complain though because Alawar gave me a coupon with a permanent 50% off all games several years ago as a thank you for the comments i used to leave for each game I purchased. They even sent me a goodie box one christmas with a kitchen clock , a large mug a courier bag, a calendar plus a few other items, all advertising Magic Ball 3 which I'd beta tested.

Dana,

In effect, you are unzipping and running SETUP.EXE, so I'm not sure I've understood your question?

SETUP.EXE (the one in the GGOTD ZIPfile) runs the Themida unwrapper, which "activates" the SETUP.GCD file in memory, after checking the date and time with GGOTD. This process can take quite a few minutes, depending on the age of your PC, the speed of your processor, and how much RAM is in it.

The "activated" file is then run, and lately this has been a WinRAR self-extracting EXE file. But if GGOTD were given a master copy which contains an installer, then that's what will run. So perhaps the best answer to your question is "it depends what the manufacturer of the game gave to GGOTD as to whether or not an 'installer' will run after the file is 'activated' online."

Does that help at all?

Hope the exams and study are going well.

Very happy to report that I rechecked the TooMky site and it indeed has been cleaned up. Download Alien Town with no problems, played a small portion and closed.....no warnings whatsoever from my virus software, malware is gone, download was clean with no added junk to worry about, just opened the main page when the game closed which is perfectly fine with me.

Already have today's game offering and kept it so it's a decent game as I don't keep them if they annoy me in any way. Yesterday's was a new one for me and played a bit of that, also seems fine so far. Have a lot going on this weekend so really don't have time to give a decent report. BTW I love these adventure type HO games. They have story lines and are so much more interesting than just looking for list after list of stuff. Hope to see more that I don't already have. Will be doing more at TooMkyGames.com from now on......so glad they cleaned it up and responded so quickly....that is impressive as most sites you never get any satisfaction when you try to let them know you are having a problem. Thank you to both this site, WR and members and to TooMky. Have a nice day everyone.....off to my events of the day!

Thanks LadyLei. I've seen the posts over in the forums. Nice to see someone from TooMky posting in reply to questions and to see that they have cleaned up their site. I will download a few once I reinstall a VM just be be sure beofre i add it to my reviews. :)

Cals just about to start the last leg of his exams. He finishes his last exam (further maths) on the 19th June. He only has two exams to sit that week, both further maths, the rest are this coming week and the following week; at least one exam every day starting Tuesday, with a few days where he has two exams. We will be glad when he's finished them as they have taken over the house, with past papers strewn everywhere (depending on whether I or my wife is marking them). We've gone through three laser printer cartridges as well as a black and white and color cartridge for the color printer and four reams of paper so far printing out past papers for him to practice. The only problem I forsee is his appalling writing. We've tried to get him to write as he does in his exams(he says he writes neater), but he keeps on scribbling. We've tried to explain that he could lose valuable marks if the examiners can't read his writing. He doesn't seem to get that those that mark the exam papers have hundreds of papers to mark at each sitting, so won't spend time trying to decipher illegible writing.

At least he realizes that he needs to do more prep work throughout the term once he starts his A levels in September/October (16 to 18 year olds in the UK).

Wow! What a great game! Downloaded quickly using "DownThemAll" (go find this great software for Mozilla if you don't have it) and installed just as fast on my Win 7 machine. Graphics are amazing on this one and it's a good, long game. I read the review on Big Fish Games via the link you posted, and found that the only difference between the Collector's Ed. and the Standard Ed. was a bonus chapter with an extra hr or so playing time, Strategy Guide, and some wallpapers & interviews it looks like. Since walkthrough help is readily available via various sites (BFG is one of them), I don't feel I am missing anything not having the Strategy Guide. And I truly don't mind missing a little extra playing time - I'd rather get a safe, problem free d/l from a trusted site like yours, that's for sure. Thanks so much guys...you gave us 2 wonderful games this weekend and it is much appreciated!!

Is anyone else getting this or know how to solve it?
I haven't been able to get the giveaways, weekend games or daily giveaways, for over 3 months now, and this isn't just on one PC, but 3 desktops and 2 laptops hooked onto different home routers.

When I try to run the setup, whether normally or as administrator, and even with the anti-virus and firewall shut down completely, all I ever get is a the window saying that it is activating and connecting to the giveaway server, and then a dialog box saying "Failed to launch the program". I've missed some great giveaways recently and would love to know how to cure it.

Any clues anyone?

................................Moderator comment...............................

I presume you've checked the FAQ's thread over in the game discussion forums (not th FAQ's in the main forums. I've linked to the correct thread in my comment (see comment 1). Immediately after getting the 'Failed to launch the program', open up your event viewer and check the event logs. There should be some indication in the logs as to what the problem might be. If you are getting the same problem on allo f your PC's and laptops and via different ruters it may be that the problem lies between your connection and your provider.

It's hard to check via other download sites as none rely on the software needing a connection to the vendors servers, (usually). I'd post about this issue over in the forums as well so that it's answerable long term. This comments page will be rarely visited once the giveaway is over. I'd also post about this issue over in the main giveaway comments as well. There are more community members visiting there and likely to be more tech savvy community members (no disrespect meant to the rest of the community here)

No, I haven't been on Facebook either or anything social. Had a rough time lately. Think I have to update Steam.

Right now I'm more interested in getting rid of the mouse that making me lose sleep every night than anything else. Maybe I'm no paying right enough attention either. :)

..............................Moderator comment.............................

Sorry to hear you are having a rough time Dana.

Have you tried using one of those humane mouse traps? We had the same problem when we lived in the Lake District many years ago. The house was plagued with mice, so we set humane traps everywhere and caught a lot of mice that way. We used to take them over the fields at the back of the house and let them go. :)

I hope things improve for you soon. when they do, message me o via Steam. I'll resend my Team speak details if you need them. Just check your Steam messages by clicking the letter symbol at the top of the Steam client. You should find a message from me with the T.S. server and password. :) When you are finally settled we could try that friends sharing thing you can do with Steam. I haven't forgotten about that. My game count on Steam is now over 5.1K so there would be plenty of games to choose from (that's if we are able to set up a share)

................................Moderator Comment......................................

I think it's mainly to do with the resolution of the images sotred within the games as well as video footage and music files. The quality of these may vary between games of a similar playing length.

i have games installed that are over 30GB (e.g. Total War: Atilla) :)

Hi Xe, check the FAQ's over in the game discussion forum sticky section. There ar epossible fixes there, it may also be your security that's blocking the installation. I've linked to the FAQ's thread in my post above (see comment 1, problems section). We are less than a quarter the way through this giveaway with almost six thousand downloads so far and only a couple of community members with this problem. It's likely to be something on your side. My Norton 360 removed game stating it had a security risk named SONAR.Heuristic.120

.....................................Moderator Comment..............................

Hi Jim, Norton is notorious for false positives. What Norton is seeing is the setup.gcd file, which is a security protected file. Some anti malware suites sometimes pick this up as a possible problem. The file is safe. The game giveaway team check all games given away throughly with several well known anti malware suites to ensure the games are safe. They have a high standing with the main search engines becasue of this. No game giveaway since the project started back in Dec 2006 has been infected with malware.

Hi.

I don't mind creepy stuff and this one isn't as large as yesterday's. I wonder 2 things though.

1) Why do we now install the game rather than unzipping and running the appropriate .exe like before?

2) Am I confused or would you lose the game if you uninstalled it? I mean, can we still use the files stand alone (just drop the game folder onto a flash drive and it runs like normal)?

I've heard of this game before and think it would be a good play, but I have a smaller hard drive so I can't use this on external drive, I'll have to pass.

Hi Dana,

I didn't notice any difference in todays installation, but to be honest, I'm so wrapped up in my sons revision at the moment I hardly notice anything. :)

Hope alls well, not seen you on Steam in a while?

What's with all the spooky & gloomy stuff? Both yesterday's and today's game looked like they were very well done, with great graphics and story lines, but just too dark and gloomy for my taste. Of course, HOGs aren't my favorite genre. But it looks like a lot of people like them, so I'll just wait for something different, and check out some things I don't have from over at Toomky Games. Here's the Forum topic link:

And here's the game site:

Thanks anyway, GGOTD, Playrix and Whiterabbit!

I will return to my usual format as soon as my sons exams are over. I will still moderate, but not as often as I usually do.

Walkthroughs

You can see walkthroughs of HERE and HERE

The Game (from Gamezebo)

The game opens with a fairly long intro movie that sets the stage for the game. You play as Sam Wilde, a reporter who has been following a string of disappearances of young people in your town. Things become personal when your girlfriend, Anna, is abducted and a man, known only as Oscar, leaves you a taunting message…to come to Goldvale Manor and try and save her.

Ashampoo Snap 2015 05 31 05h12m37s 026

Once you arrive at Goldvale Manor you realize just how disturbed Oscar truly is, and what has happened to the missing young adults. I don’t want to give anything away, because the story is quite interesting, but let’s just say that Oscar is definitely not in his right mind, and hasn’t been for quite some time.

Oscar has rigged the house with numerous traps and puzzles that you will have to overcome and solve as you try to reach Anna in time. There are speakers in every room of the house, and Oscar will use them to taunt you and occasionally drop a random hint. Most of the time, you can continue investigating a room while Oscar monologues, which is a nice feature since he talks quite a bit.

The gameworld is immense, probably one of the largest I’ve seen in this type of game. There are well over fifty scenes that you will visit as you explore Goldvale Manor and its grounds. The artwork in the game is detailed and fun to look at, but many times there are only one or two items that you need in a room. When you have to travel back and forth through all these scenes it can get a bit tiresome.

There is a map built into the game that will show you the rooms you’ve uncovered and which rooms have items of interest in them. Unfortunately you cannot fast travel to locations, which, considering the size of the gameworld, would have been a nice feature.

Dorian Gray Syndrome is an adventure game with hidden object scenes. The balance between the two elements is excellent and the hidden object scenes don’t feel out of place, even if they aren’t as numerous as they are in other games. The scenes make sense and items are not overly difficult to find.

Oscar has definitely put some thought into hindering your progress and you will need to solve numerous puzzles along the way to advance. The puzzles are of all degrees of difficulty and many of them are fairly unique, or at least present unique spins on classic puzzles.

The Collector’s Edition features a bonus chapter that is in a completely new setting and sets the game up for a sequel. The bonus chapter is a decent length and the gameplay is the same as the main game. The Collector’s Edition also includes concept art, the game soundtrack, and wallpapers. It also has an interview with the developers and some humorous comics featuring Oscar.

Problems:

If you have any problems installing or getting today's game to work please go HERE for help. I've posted most of the common problems and solutions in a FAQ thread, which you can find in the sticky section of the forums by following the above link.

If you are posting late in the day I would also suggest posting in the main giveaway forums, in the game discussion section because I cannot moderate 24hrs a day over the weekend. I've created a thread HERE for that purpose. If you've installed the game but it won’t work for some reason, it should still be registered, so someone may be able to help at another time. Unfortunately if your problem is actually installing it then once the giveaway period is over there’s nothing that can be done until the game is given away again (though that isn't guaranteed). Sometimes you can still register the game after the giveaway has ended so long as you managed to start the download before the giveaway ends. I've tested this and the grace period lasts for up to 1 hour.

It’s always worth checking out the free games sites because sometimes the games we get here are also available for free from them. MyPlayCity (MPC) has the most with over 1000 games to choose from. Other sites include Gametop and FreeGamePick. Todays game is available as the collectors edition from MyPlayCity:

http://www.myplaycity.com/consciousness/

If you do download any games from MyPlayCity, Gametop or the other free game sites 'do' watch out for toolbars etc. Make sure you un-check the check-boxes during installation, and, in the case of MyPlayCity, every time you boot the game up, (this may have changed now as these free game sites tend to change the format frequently. .. I've posted links to all of the common free game sites below in the games, games games section. :)http://steamcommunity.com/app/263200
For now I won't be recommending you download games from Jenkat Games. They have changed the way you get games from their site. Diane has posted information about this over in the game discussion forums. If I have time or remember, I'll link to it. Cab Lady/Lady Lei doesn't recommend TooMyk Games due to malware warnings.

A Request for helpl>:

Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average between 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of 'potential' cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away even more decent games.

Please leave some feedback once you’ve checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain what your reasons were for the feedback you post. You could also leave suggestions for improving the game, for example, this game could do with more block types for the levels editor, add more power-ups, describing the ones you think would be suitable, add some mini games (which seem all the rage in some arcade games now) or enable the user to be able to change the in game music easily.

Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to post a constructive comment, and a big thank you to immanitas games for sharing and to the game giveaway team for getting these games.

Regards

Whiterabbit aka Stephen
