The Game:
If I wanted to be lazy about reviewing Behind the Reflection 2: Witch’s Revenge, it’d be easy enough to do it. All I’d do is copy and paste the text from our review of its predecessor, Behind the Reflection, and ta-dah! I’d be done. The fact is, developer Veles Studio cranked out a bland, lacklustre hidden object game several years ago then a year later (2012), rather than learn anything from the experience, they’ve cranked out another one.
Behind the Reflection didn’t have much of a story to tell, but Witch’s Revenge does its best to milk what little narrative there was. The first game had the heroine’s young son being inexplicably trapped behind a mirror by a generic evil witch for incredibly vague reasons. While there was some hint that the boy’s capture was related to the acquisition of a magical item, the “story” merely gave players an excuse to move through a series of seemingly unrelated scenes, cobbling together random items. Sadly, Witch’s Revenge does pretty much the same thing. The anonymous witch is back and she’s none too pleased with you for foiling her first nefarious plan; being something of a wiccan one-trick-pony, she once again imprisons your son behind a mirror and once again, it’s up to you to get him out.
If the team at Veles hasn’t learned anything in the last year about crafting a better story, they also haven’t learned much about making a better-looking game. Aside from a handful of really nicely rendered 2D item portraits, the game is packed with forgettable 3D art. It’s as if every scene was assembled from a storehouse of stock 3D art objects.
image

image
In one no doubt unintentionally humorous instance, a hidden object scene featured a calendar from 1995. Considering the game’s dated graphics, the reference made perfect sense.
In addition to being aesthetically challenged, Behind the Reflection 2: Witch’s Revenge has issues with interactivity as well; for starters, the rules of interactivity keep changing. Sometimes you’re clued in to where to go by big, fat “go here!” arrows that pop up on screen. Other times random sparkles appear whether they need to or not, making you return to areas where nothing more can be done. On some occasions, you’re ordered to look for things by characters spewing awkward, poorly-translated dialog, and on others, you can only find items by clicking objects to move or open them. Top this inconsistency with puzzles that are peppered with pernickety pieces that often disallow you from placing them, and you have a recipe for boredom and frustration.
Granted, the game does have one somewhat interesting thing regarding puzzles: the idea of gathering the parts that trigger them. Where most games present puzzles as mini-games separate from hidden object scenes, Witch’s Revenge more closely integrates the two. The main point of the game in fact, is moving from place to place triggering puzzles by collecting items then taking items earned from solving those puzzles and constructing various key story items. It’s a good idea that could really have taken off, but it’s weighed down by the game’s myriad failings.
image

image
Flimsy story, boring 3D art, confusing interactivity, bad dialog—Behind the Reflection 2: Witch’s Revenge has it all. Although here and there hints of the Veles team’s talent show through, somehow in the development process, a lot more than dialog got lost in the translation. A bit of friendly advice Veles – next time, do both yourself and us a favour and learn from your mistakes.

Conclusion:
I’ve not played the game long enough (due in part to a family situation this weekend), so haven’t included a conclusion, though I did find the game a reasonable HOG despite its age and contrary to the review above.
Suggestions:
After you've had an opportunity to play today's giveaway please take a few moments to give some positive or negative feedback; for example, what you liked or disliked about the game, or how it could be improved. If you don't like the genre at all, please explain why and if any, what improvements would change your mind? If you don't have time to post a comment today, please do so at your convenience, thank you. If you wish to post a review or comment about the game later, you can access the comments section by going to the game giveaways home page, then scroll to the bottom of the page where it says Archives and select the date the giveaway was live (giveaway days are in bold type). This will open the appropriate page for you to post your comment or review. Alternatively, you can google the name of the game and include Gamegiveawayoftheday in the search. This should give you a list of links to whenever this game was given away.
If you miss today's game giveaway you can always get the game via MyPlayCity 24/7 HERE; or If you prefer to purchase the game you can get it HERE via Big Fish Games.
Problems getting the game to work:
If you're having problems installing or activating or getting Behind the Reflection 2: Witch's Revenge to work please visit the FAQ's Thread HERE and read through the communities comments because sometimes fixes have already been posted, for example, a common issue seen since the Themida wrapper was introduced three years ago is that some community members installation of the game are blocked by their security because Themida code has been known to hide malware, (usually an error message is flagged for example 'The executable is corrupted' even though in reality it is not); so as a precaution some anti malware programs will block and even delete the suspect installation files even though the files (i.e. the setup, read me and setup.gcd files are actually totally free from malware. This issue can be solved either by rebooting your computer in safe mode with networking or a quicker method is to temporarily turn off your security software to allow the installation. You could also try whitelisting the setup.gcd file. In the almost 11 years this game giveaway site has been operating there has 'never' been a game given away that was infected with malware.

If for any reason you want to contact the giveaway team, for example, you have a game to offer the community, or are unable to download the latest game or other issues that the FAQ's thread or these comments don't cover or solve you can do so HERE
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank MyPlayCity for giving away Behind the Reflection 2: Witch's Revenge and also to the game giveaway team, as always, for securing other ways to get free games.

I have the same problem as others - the game stops working when I try to enter the upstairs room. I have tried all the different compatibility settings and nothing has worked, so sadly this game is going to be deleted. Such a shame, as I love HOGS. Thanks GG anyway.

Hi!

Downloaded easy and uploaded slowly. Had slowness at first and difficulty entering name.
After a slow start and changing the cursor to the system one, due to a drag, game play became smoother.
One activity usually follows another with a little more discovery sometimes. The story is the usual as well
Thanks for another good game, and have a great week! Lee

Loaded fine on 7 pro and have been playing for the last two hours or so with no problem, I have just assembled the Exorcist's Cross but cant figure out where to stick it. At least the journal told you where to put the telescope when it had been assembled, ah well I'll leave the game for a few hours and then see if I can figure it out then.
Thanks GGOTD.

Sadly, the last two giveaways I've downloaded here have stopped with errors. This one stops with an error about "engine.exe" not working. :( I don't think I can download these games anymore. And it's not like I'm on an old computer. This is Windows 10 home.

Very disappointed that EVERY game I download now is problematic.

Regards to Stephen and hope missus improves?

As to today's game, ignore the snarky review! I found it fun, the graphics aren't as bad as that jaded Nellie said, the storyline is no better nor worse then many other HOGs, and I found the nicest part was the way the puzzles linked together for once! Though I wouldn't want to eat anything out of Jacob's mum's fridge (YECCH!).

If oyu enjoy HOGs then give this one a try: I think you will enjoy it more than Nellie's review would lead you to believe!

Thanks to MPC, Alawar, Veles, and of course GGOTD for this lovely game today: nice one!

This is not free you have to buy unzip for 30.00

Reply   |   Comment by anna m doerscher  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-7)

anna m doerscher, why buy unZIP? Windows 7 can 'see inside' ZIPfiles, so double-click the ZIPfile you downloaded, then Copy the files from WITHIN the ZIPfile and then Paste them somewhere else to extract them.

Drag and drop usually won't work to extract from ZIPfiles (depends on the version of Windows), so you have to Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V to Copy and Paste (respectively) or else select them from the right-click menu in Explorer.

Once you've done that, you can run the SETUP. Note that you may need to temporarily disable your AV to allow the verification to work. For example, in AVG you have to turn off the Behaviour Shield. Note that once the MPC setup dialog appears, you can re-enable your AV again.

No money needed!

Therese S.,

7-Zip also makes compressed files smaller than regular zip files, so besides being open source, it's also the better app. ;)

Reply   |   Comment by mike  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Cad Delworth, "so double-click the ZIPfile "
also possible to right click on the zip and then choose extract.
Then all the files will be in a subfolder.

Very frustrating: After putting together the bookcase in the living room, had to go back to the kid's room to finish the doll, but the program keeps crashing when I click on the kid's room from the living room. Have tried numerous times; everything works until I try to click on the kid's room.

Reply   |   Comment by neme  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

Sorry, I'm thinking that may not be the kid's room (because I can get there by going down from the living room); it's the room at the top of the stairs. Clicking to go in there crashes the game, but the hint says that's what I have to do. Have tried numerous times.

I'm pretty patient with games that are not great, as I'm just looking for a little distraction. But games that are seriously buggy (and it's hard to believe it's just me, especially since it installed and runs otherwise fine) are really unacceptable. Has anyone else experienced this, and found a solution? And aren't these games vetted before being offered here?

Reply   |   Comment by neme  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+6)

neme, Same issue here running win 10 home. Get to exactly the same place and get windows crash. Have tried various fixes, running windowed, etc. but still crashes every time. Compatibility mode just makes it worse.

Ron, exactly the same here, shame as it was nice, simple fun up to that point.

neme, Om my pc this wasn't a problem at all; no crashes.
windows 7 prof.

Ron, thanks for posting---while I'm sorry you're having trouble, I'm glad it's not just me :). I finally deleted the game, reinstalled, and no luck---same issue. I suspect that others are also having the issue, and with no moderator today, we may be out of luck. I'm disappointed, as I do love me my HOGs :).

Reply   |   Comment by neme  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

Ron and neme, sorry to hear of your problems!

I'm running the game on Win 7 Home Premium and didn't have that problem.

All I can suggest is using something like Oracle VM VirtualBox to load a copy of Win 7 or XP, then try the game there.

Reply   |   Comment by Cad Delworth  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Same for me, crashes.

White Rabbit, I am praying for your wife and hope all is well. I am sorry you are having to go through this.

Hi Neme and others having trouble with the game crashing in the upstairs area.

Putting the game in Windows 8 compatibility mode worked for me. I am using Windows 10 and was able to continue the game with zero problems. Hopefully it will work for all of you as well. Cheers!

Thanks to this web site for yet another great free game!

neme, don't click to go upstairs, click down at the bar with empty boxes at the bottom or the help picture bottom left to bring up shimmery stars down at the foot of the screen. this will take you to the kids room.

My problem is there appears to be no where to go to get the dolls arms, did kids room, game consol, kitchen, mantle, bookshelf, fridge, but nothing to get me to the fourth piece.

Reply   |   Comment by grangehearts  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

neme, I had the same problem. Couldn't even get to the room upstairs in compatibility mode...
until I changed the game to windowed in stead of full screen. Then I could continue upstairs.
Maybe, if you didn't uninstall allready, you could try this too.
