An easy, logical, nerve-calming game.

Bagh Chal is the national game of Nepal and has been played throughout the ages. Bagh Chal, which literally translates as "Tiger, Movement" is also called: “game of Tiger Tactics" or "Goats and Tigers".

This game belongs to the family of hunting games in which each player either has a few "predators" or has "preys" which are more numerous. The goats block the tigers and the tigers eat the goats…

How to play

Bagh Chal is played with four Tigers and twenty Goats. At the start of the game, the tigers are placed in the four corners of the board.

The "goat" player places a goat on the board, which he can’t move until all twenty goats have been placed. The "tiger" player moves one of his tigers from one intersection to another, if there is a line linking them together and also if the intersection spot is free, or even (though he doesn’t have to) capture a goat by jumping the tiger over a goat onto a free intersection spot behind the goat, all in a straight line.

The "goat" player, from the twenty-first move onwards, can move his goats from one intersection to another, if there is a line linking them together and also if the final destination spot is free, and try to restrict the tigers’ movements.

To win, the goats must immobilise the tigers. The tigers have to capture as many goats as possible so as not to become immobilised. The tigers always have to leave the goats at least one possibility to move. Normally, if the "tiger" player takes five goats, he wins. The repeated repetition of moves is the equivalent to the "goat" player abandoning.

It's good to see you back WR. I got this last time on other computer. I think it played well, but it seemed to be hard to win. Maybe needs more levels, but I didn't get to download it this time.

Thank's Julia. I agree, this together with some more games by exotic are excellent games. Sometimes the simplest are well worth the download. this is probably one of the simplest (less complex) games I've played in ages.

Thanks for the excellent review and all your helpful hints about other great games, Stephen. You really are an (inter)national treasure. :)

I enjoyed Bagh Chal, especially its lovely graphics, in a gentle sort of way. It was a very welcome download. Thanks to GOTD and Merscom.

Excellent! 5 out of 5 stars! I *love* strategy games like chess and checkers and this is an cool variation! Download and install was quick and simple on my Vista Business! But the best thing about this software is the play over a network feature! Again, excellent! Love it, GGAOD! Thanks

Installed and ran fine on Vista64.

I nice strategy game that took me a few games to figure out. Strategy wise, I would look toward Hexxen, no wait, that is not what I am thinking. That bar arcade game where you have the blobs and have to Grow them to see whether you or the computer gain the most space.

Hex-something. AUUGH!

That's very kind of you crosius, but the reviews I write for the game giveaway project aren't the best by far. If I spent more time on them, then they would be much better, but recently I've spent a lot less time on writing them. they are nothing more than a collection of information and contain very few thoughts on the actual game play.

gpc11, if you want something new why don't you purchase something? There's lots of brilliant new games around for less than $20. Try Obulis, a game that Sukibabe put me onto, a brilliant puzzle game that'll keep the most devoted of puzzle gamers occupied for weeks, then there are some beautiful adventure games around such as Siberia 2 and the latest On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode Two. Or maybe a tower defense game would be more to your taste. I recently purchased Defense Grid: The Awakening, a superbly made one at that. then maybe you want some impossible machines style game. try Armadillo Run. It comes with an editor so you can make as many original levels as you want. There's lots more; Crayon Physics was recently released, it's one of the best games I've played in weeks and of course not to forget World of Goo that was released two months ago. It's been at the top of the best sellers for ages now. All are less than $20. you can even get some superb classics such as Flatout, the two Oddworld titles, DarkStar One and Freespace two fantastic 3D space shooters, all for between $5.99 to 9.99 (GOG games, where I found Under a Steel Sky (thanks to Albesir)that was posted in the free games forums. The list is not endless, but there are loads more. I've not bothered mentioning the latrest Hidden Object and Match Three games as they are becoming a little old hat, but you wont find better than the ones being released at the moment.

Avast Antivirus (resident shield) detected the following virus (worm) in the download file: win32:agent-ZZU. I was able to quarantine it, reran Avast, and the file showed up clean. Please be aware. Either the server file is infected, or it is being infected upon download; either way, be sure to scan it while downloading. Turn on your resident shield for this one. This is the first time this has happened with a ggotd file but some of the problems mentioned above might be caused by this worm (I'm no tekkie, just speculation)

That was a google malfunction, it lasted only an hour or so. It had nothing to do with this game and a system restore wasn't necessary.

To number 27, that was some kind of glitch with google, fixed now, see post on lifehacker. Game runs fine on Vista Number 16, just delete the folder you installed it to and it's gone, better yet put move it to a thumb drive in case you change your mind some day, it will run fine from there.

Yes it's the country's "national" game. When I was in Nepal last year I sat in the stands in the huge stadium forthe Bag Chi games there were played there. I can tell you the crowds there werea lot less unruly than American fans. Probably because they don't serve beer in the stands, only hotdogs. Anywhow, the Bagi Chi Tigers won over the Goats, I think the score was112 to 16.

Ops (and others) don't worry, the game isn't responsible for your google search results problem. I'm not sure what's going on, but it's been a problem all day...something on google's end. Only solution I've found so far is disable the google toolbar in your browser.

Fine Vista HP 32 bit. Make shortcut. Chess like puzzle strategy. Run
Tutorial just to get feel. I lost 3 games getting hang of placing
goats in tutorial I went went with basic concept of ringing outside
squares and freezing the tigers moves. Seems if you lose a few goats early on and try for the 300 points win (?), you might be too far
short of goats to even try for a stalemate by repeated moves of the
goats. Tigers prob have enough 'free room' then to get to jump even
more of the 5 goats to win.
So haven't tried a free form initial goat setup nor the actual
games beyond tutorial. My main fear is game could get boring since is too dependent on sheer logic. Too much like homework. That's the
crux of most puzzle games. No room for creativity. Computer can just outlast the player's attention span. Player craves the new anyway so
lack of free form play limits the appeal. I mean ok game for a quick
round or two now & then. Just won't fall in love with it as a fun to return to kind of adventure of fear, loathing, discovery, etc.
Gotta feed the instinctual beast too. And so far computer logic
does not cross into that frontier of humanness.
That's a good thing. Wouldn't want to live in a world w/o paintings,
plays, books, movies, sports, stock market surprises, etc.
Times like these call for human engagement on all levels more than
just doing brain teasers on a PC.
Guess facing 2 weeks of Grand Jury duty is making me philosophical about the foibles of humanity more than clean, orderly PC. lol thx

I suspect there's something hidden within this game. After I installed it, I noticed that *all* my google search results were marked with the warning: "This site may harm your computer."
Had to do a System Restore to remove the problem...

No problems installing and playing on my Vista machine. If you like strategy games, you will probably like this one. I was surprised that I won the very first game I played. Of course, I'm sure that was just beginner's luck, but I'll take it anyway. ;) Give the game a try. You may be pleasantly surprised. Thanks GGOTD!

Works fine on Vista Premium 32 Bit. Seems like a nice relaxing game that you can play for short periods. Also, it is nice because you can install it on a partition to play (as do any of the Merscom LLC games that I have installed from GOTD) which saves on hard drive space on my C drive.

Thanks Game of the Day.

By the way, I wanted to mention briefly how great it is that people are willing to give their time posting wonderful reviews (and alternatives) like White Rabbit and also all the people who put remarks in this forum to help others get their games and other giveaways here working. You guys really rock. Makes me think of a little village on the internet where folks watch out for each others, if that is not too sappy a thing to say.

Nice graphics. I feel that the help function did not properly explain the rationale behind the game--the users' comments were much more helpful in that department. I have to admit that I found it completely unappealing, but for those who like puzzles this might be enjoyable. Maybe it's a cultural issue--it might help to have grown up playing this game, and doing so with friends, not a computer. Thanks for the offering, though.

Hi Gilbert,
The reason today's game is much smaller is because the DXDiag file has been removed. all they have included is the dll file rather than the whole DX installer. Another thing that's missing from this version is an uninstaller (though that's less than a Mb). The first one definitely came with one because I still have it installed.

I'd re-download the game as there was a problem with the earlier version given away.

Why is this game not freeware? I mean, sure, they're giving it away today, but I could whip up a game like that in 3 days [I haven't tried it yet, just read the rules]. Even the size is kinda unbelievable; I didn't think it would be any greater than 10 mb.

Seeing as this my first post on this website, I really have to say that this website and the idea is awesome!

Yeah I get the same message when I try again so it looks like you'll need to re-download it afterall.

The new download definitely works; though the usual with most games from Merscom you don't get a 'proper' installer nor a desktop shortcut. It tried to install to the last game given away which was Lumen, so make sure you relocate it when the installation process starts.
