Game play is overly simplistic, but the graphics are good. Unfortunately the game is virtually unplayable because the droid's aim it totally unpredictable. Sometimes it fires almost where the icon indicates, other times it's as much as 30 degrees off. It could have been a fun game otherwise.

though the 'droid' fires not where you aim the controls are acceptable, but far away from great. there is no such thing as a story, just more enemys to take care of. the graphic is not too bad but not really good either. the only options are changing the volume of sound and music, which both aren't great as well.

story (0/10)
gameplay (2/10)
graphic (2/10)
sound & music (2/10)
help & options (1/10)

all (7/50)

off a little on the topic, but directed to the cat fight of the "stop complaining about free stuff, argument"

for one, you can not tell people NOT to complain we can and we will, it's human nature.

true, free is free, and any gift should be treated graciously, however, negative feed back will hopefully give site admin an idea of what to look for for future giveaways, as will as potential down loaders a chance to avoid duds.

but those that do complain should try to do so a little more tactfully

Played some great games from here but this was not one of them. Droid shoots 30 degrees from where your aiming. Doesn't shoot through door ways. On the plus side, it was free and I know not to buy this one.

I tried this game out. its quite boring. It has this weird floating image of a spaceship? possibly a floating jpg or something. and you press left click to aim at stuff. Then there are weird lasers coming out of it. There is just no way to describe how horrible this is.

@#57 (liz) who said: "I am greatful for the free games, but I dislike space shooting games as I am a girl"

I am a girl too, and I LOVE shooters, esp. space shooters.

Still, this one is a major thumbs down, as a beta it would be OK, but as a full commercial game?
Not until the problems are fixed, especially the controls/aiming issues.

To those mindless sheep with inane comments who want negative views of the freebies offered here, "kept to theirselves", should consider keeping their supposed supportive butt kissing views to themselves.

As game enthusiasts, a majority of everyone who visits this website look towards negative, as well as positive, posts.

How is one to learn if a download is good or bad if all we encounter are lame inane positive posts?

If you download it, fine, if not, fine, give your reasons/comments, if it did or did not work for you, then move on, enjoy your day, see you back here at sometime in the future.

Supportive & negative views, of products, is what the business of making these products is all about.

this game is really pitiful.

basically it's just one continuous level, 2 weapons, no power ups, no health restores, nothing, and as stated before, the aim is off by 20 or 30 degrees, could have potential, but it'll need work

Rubbish game, feels like a alpha or beta test. Game play doesn't change enough, targeting redicle becomes untrue and wanders throughout combat. I had graphics issues which was probably just my driver. For what its worth we all have the right to say what we want about these games good or bad thats what these comments are here for.
Loved yesterdays game although it made be feel quite gay!

I only played this game for a minute, but I'm gonna play it again because it was so hilariously stupid. And if somethin' makes me laugh, I can't complain about it. What a hoot. It's good to get a hoot now and then. :)

I have played the game and here are my two cents.
The game is very simple.
you click to shoot.. very simplistic in nature, there is no real challenge..
I would consider the greatest challenge the use of the controls and misaligned shooting. (like said previously its about 30 degrees off)
It took about 4 minutes to get to level four.. so.. if that gives you any idea.
Hope this helps..
Cheers,
Jas

Kind of ironic how #39's excellent comment is immediately followed by some clueless "ZOMG CRITICISM IS BAD" drivel.

Linux is free and I highly doubt it would be where it is today had it not been for tons of criticism and scrutiny. Considering the best part about this site is seems to be spotlighting little games and giving small developers exposure, the best thing to do is to criticize the titles so that the developers (and this site in general) can improve.

No one has the right to complain about anything offered here. You've paid nothing and in many cases not even contributed anything worthwhile. Whether you think a release is incredible, just OK or terrible, you should leave feedback to support your argument. (See: "Constructive criticism".) I think it is little to ask to show you appreciation for a website giving away free games regularly (even if only on weekends). Thanks GGOTD :)

That said... evaluated as a final release, Assault Droid is a disappointment; this seemed much more like a Beta. Though this could definitely develop into a more full-featured game, it is very unpolished at the moment.

From level to level, the only attainable goal is to reach the next level -- there are no powerups or obstacles (beyond shooting switches on the wall), and the player starts with both weapons from the beginning of the game. There is really no reason to use the second weapon other than to see what it looks like. It has a slower firing rate than the primary weapon and appears to do the same amount of damage, so it is essentially useless. How about hooking up an energy bar to these energy weapons and/or introducing a type of weapon with an ammunition count?

As you progress in any game, you want the game to become more difficult and Assault Droid's approach is to throw more enemy units at you. Although this is the most simple method of increasing the game difficulty, it is certainly not the best. There doesn't appear to be much in the way of AI either, as it's goal is to simply turn and shoot. While it will sometimes move towards you, the AI units will generally just rotate their turrets in place, exposing their immobility thereby making them an easy target. Probably the most disappointing aspect of the AI is how the units appear to get stuck in the doorways which are seemingly just large enough to accommodate them if they roll through at the right angle.

There appears to be an intermittent problem with the graphics engine where polygons appear to "explode", where a vertex will suddenly jump to another location much farther than the rest of the vertices, which could almost be confused for another droid shooting at you. Although the graphics engine is otherwise well done, this appears to be the only intriguing part of the gameplay. Assault Droid will need to rely upon more than this to be an enjoyable and successful game.

Probably the most undeveloped part of the game is the final level. The player can easily breeze through the first six levels, but the seventh level is suddenly many times longer. With no attainable life regerating powerups, it makes the game instantly, incredibly, frustratingly difficult. But the only reward for finally making through all of this was an apparent crash. The game didn't say "You win" or "Game over", but rather:
"Hanging application AssaultDroid.exe, version 0.0.0.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000."

By no means do I consider myself a hard critic and I have been at least a satisfied with all of the releases I've played offered by GGOTD so far, but as unpolished and seemingly pre-release as this game is, I find a 3/10 an appropriate score.

This needs to be addressed (again) because some people never seem to get it. #16 and #20, people who always act like FREE is some magical word that makes anything attached to it wonderful. You can get a bag of dirty diapers for free but so what? You can get a whole box full of old lottery tickets for free but why? Free doesn't mean good.
As for #20, comment, the whole purpose of this comments section is to give the software author and GAOTD some feed back on the software being offered, both good and bad so your mindset about not saying anything negative is just dead wrong.
I used to gripe too, especially when I'd see 50 thumbs down and 0 reviews but I didn't understand. The thumbs up and down give GAOTD a quick poll on whether people are interested in that software, which is a very important thing for them to know. That stupid dwarf screen saver offered today is a good example. I didn't download it and wont because I have no use for screensavers at all. I don't have to download it to know that so I can just let them know with a thumbs down.
All of this feedback is good for GAOTD and this site, if all they got was warm and fuzzy feedback that didn't reflect any truth they would be out of business pretty soon because they would have no idea what their visitors wanted. I am increasingly supportive of their system of doing things.

It's been a while since I wrote one of these. But to #16 & #20: We're not complaining. We're saying the game doesn't even work correctly. If they offered to pay me $5 to play this game for 20 minutes, I wouldn't take it, because my time is worth more than that. it would be hard to argue that one of the most fundamental thigs about a shooting game is that it shoots in the drection you push. Any game that doesn't do that isn't worth anything--even "free."

After all that game play , when my eyes are doing funny things and the sweat is starting to form on my upper lip , I'll take a break and watch my Dwarf screen saver to calm my nerves . Stop!! Stop!! #16 and #20, the games are provided free FOR ADVERTISING and FOR FEEDBACK. Well, that's what this is. Feedback. If no one complains about the crappy features of the free games, the developers will just think they're doing great now won't they?

Maybe the game's worth the price (free), but that's hardly a good value judgment is it?

I didn't realize there were only seven levels because I didn't bother to read the info at the head of this page. Apart from the game mechanics, I wouldn't put this game in the same class as those I mentioned above, nor the two I give links to below. I'd also re-assess my original score of 7 and give it 5 out of 10 instead. It took me only a few minutes to play the first three levels, so I'm appalled at the size of the whole game. I was expecting at least 30 or so levels as well as lots of power ups and a multitude of different enemy types. Bearing that in mind there's no way this game should be a commercial one. (IMO)

As Mad Ollie comment #19 above mentions, there are loads of freeware games that surpass this for game play and graphics. The closest games I can think of to this one that are worth downloading are the third in the RIP series and Crimson Road, which you can get from Gametop. Remember though that with Gametop games you do get your browser opening when you close the game down; however there are no viruses or Malware, and closing down the page closes the link with Gametop. You’ll find Gametop get new games occasionally, so it’s worth visiting their web site now and again:

I'm all for not complaining about GOTD and the effort they put forth to bring us FREE programs/games. However, I'm also for people pointing out when programs/games are just not worth the time to download it. It seems this game is one of those I will not be trying out due to the negative comments about game play.

I appreciate everyone who takes the time to comment about the game (whether it's positive or negative) - Thank you.

I appreciate GOTD for bringing us free goodies =D - Thank you.

I'll be back next weekend (and the weekend after that... but I also keep hoping for those daily game giveaways we used to have *wink wink*).

to #16 and others

this service is not about just getting free stuff. The developers look at the comments as well, and use them as feedback. If all they see is "great game, thanks" then this service is worthless for a lot of them.

I have shot off emails to some of the developers with feedback, and they some have mentioned how fun it is to watch the comments when a game does well. The ones that do poorly usually still appreciate the feedback.

so if you like it or not, it helps the developers to see honest opinions. It serves no one if all we see are a bunch of glowing reviews and thank yous.

personally, the game is not my style. It is amusing, but unpolished. Once you figure out that you can hold the mouse button down and use the weaker weapon to clear levels easily, it loses most of the luster that it does have.
