We have two games coming up tomorrow, the first an MPC game is almost half a gigabyte in size and over three quarters of a gigabyte when installed) , so, if you have a slow connection, be sure to start downloading early to avoid disappointment. The second game is a limited key giveaway of 100 keys. I think some community members are going to be very pleased to see this particular game, which I've already purchased because it is one of my favorite arcade game genres and so far I've really enjoyed playing it. It was only released just over a month ago and has garnered mostly positive comments and reviews from the community (116 positive reviews out of 144 and most of the negative ones are about a certain trivial aspect of the game that I think is absolutely fine or are about how the game is totally different from it's predecessors, that fact of the matter is the developer has made a game using a similar name to other games they created from a different genre, though somewhat related; still, you can't please everyone.)

Regarding the free Steam keys I'm giving away. I am unable to access my forum account at this time, so, if I've posted that you've won a key please comment here. I will delete the comment once I've sent out your choice of game. Please ensure you use a valid email when signing in to comment otherwise you won't receive the key. Thank you.

Please only post comments about today's game giveaway Arxon; other comments either not appropriate, or not about today's game will be deleted at the moderator or administrators discretion; however a little light banter among community members and with the moderator to keep this a friendly place to visit is acceptable and welcomed. All comments not specifically about today's game giveaway will be judged by the moderator and if deemed not appropriate, will be deleted with no explanation. Please see the end of this review for further details about posting comments and links to the teams contact, moderation policy and the FAQ's thread, thank you

Arxon

In Brief

An Egyptian-themed match three puzzler. Originally given away before the game giveaway side of the project was created back in Nov 2006 when the main site used to give around 3 games a week away. you can see the community comments HERE. I just missed getting that game, joining the community a few days later. It was again given away the following Nov 2007. You can see the community comments and my first review of this game (comment #8) HERE

Suggestions:

Whether you like or dislike Arxon please give some feedback about your opinion of todays game giveaway, for example, what you liked or disliked about the game, and how it could be improved from your point of view. If you don't like this genre at all, please explain why. What improvements would change your opinion? There are thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content such as better or more original mini games, or a level editor that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you. Maybe you think the graphics are a little dated and are in need of re skinning, or maybe you've just had enough of the genre and want to see something different or something with more originality? Giving such feedback instead of saying nothing or just saying this game is rubbish or good may bring more developers to the site, which could mean more and better games. Would you give away thousands of copies of a game (or extra content for a game) away to a community that complains all the time instead of giving useful feedback? It only takes a few moments of your time. This site could be transformed if only the community would be more forthcoming in their opinions of the games they are getting for free instead of complaining about the way this site has changed or that they don't like Steam games. If something isn't for you then move on to the next giveaway, or check out the extra's section at the end of this review; you never know, you may find something that interests you..

If you miss today's game giveaway you can always get the game via MyPlayCity 24/7 HERE.

Installation:

Arxon downloads to a 21.5 MB zip file that unzips to three files, (a setup.gcd security wrapper, the set up file and a read me). Those with multiple hard drives are able to save games on any drive they wish. The newly installed game is 24.7 MB in size. The game installs to the following path by default, but can be changed by the user if you prefer:

C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPlayCity.com\Arxon

Four shortcuts are installed to the desktop. three of which can be safely deleted (Play Online Games, MyPlayCity Games and shortcuts to a free online game which vary each week). Also, if you don't like icons installed to the quick launch task bar, make sure you uncheck the box when the additional tasks window appears (after the Select Start Menu Folder window)

The Game:

Main Features:
1) ... 3 gameplay modes (Adventure, Endless Or Logic Modes)

2) ... Useful power-ups

3) ... Relaxing Egyptian theme

Despites it's age, i.e. over a decade old, this still looks fantastic. The colors are vibrant and definitely remind me of my visit to Egypt several years ago. The options menu allows you to change the game from the default full screen to windowed mode. You can turn off the tutorial from the options menu as well as adjust the usual sound and music volumes. If you are finding it difficult to choose the correct move there is an hint button and if you make the wrong move you can undo the move and try again.

arxon_640x480_screenshot_2
arxon_640x480_screenshot_3
Arxon is an Egyptian themed game of logic where you match colored scarab beetles to form three or more matches in adjacent squares (vertical or horizontal lines, squares of 4 and L shaped matches). To match the scarabs you move a scarab that is located on the perimeter of the grid to where you want the scarabs on the gid to move (along the bottom or top to move vertically and along the sides to move horizontally). Once located in the correct position clicking the scarab will move it onto the board and push the line of either vertical column or horizontal row of scarabs one square along. There are three game modes:

1) ... Adventure Mode - 63 levels - where you create matches of 3 or more scarabs. This is a timed mode.

2) ... Endless Mode - 80 levels - the same game mechanics as Adventure mode but it's not timed.

3) ... Logic Mode - 10 levels - you have to move the beetles to create a pattern on the board. By creating combos, power-ups become available in the forms of bugs. The whole game has been designed in an Egyptian theme.

You can create power ups by making combos of scarab matches, for example the Destroyer Bug, which removes all of the scarabs on the grid with the same color as the one you hit! Other power ups remove all the scarabs surrounding the one you chose.

Other Reviews, Videos and Walkthroughs of ......:

You can see community reviews of Arxon (which I found to be very sparse considering the age of this game) HERE and more information in the Big Fish forums HERE.

As with the community reviews and considering this game was released in 2006 I could only find a few videos of game play. The first one may be introduced with an advert first. the second one is on Big Fish's game page for Arxon. You can skip the advert after a few seconds and with the Big fish video, you may be asked to select a video player before you can see the video. You can see the Arxon game play HERE, HERE and HERE.

Conclusion:
A match three game with a different way of creating matches. The addition of a logic mode adds a little extra to this game. A nice challenging match three game with decent colorful graphics. A good game that I'd give 7 out of 10 for game play and all round family entertainment.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank MyPlayCity for giving away Arxon and also to the game giveaway team, as always, for securing other ways to get free games, in this case Steam keys.

Useful Information not related to today's game giveaway:

The problems section that used to be posted here in the Game review is now included in the Game Discussion FAQ's thread; which you can find HERE.

I've updated the games section that used to be posted with the review. The thread is now called 'Weekly round up of game deals', formerly the games section of the weekly reviews. You can find the new thread (which I've posted in the sticky section of the game discussion forums to make it easier to find if you are perusing the game discussion forums) HERE.

If today's game giveaway, 'Arxon' didn't appeal, you may find other games either free or for less than the price of a cup of coffee via the 'Weekly Roundup of Game Deals' thread which I've posted a link to above, or HERE.
The free game over on Origin is still the excellent atmospheric Sci Fi RPG third person Shooter Mass Effect 2, but it will probably be ending soon. If you've still not got a copy, get it now, it's well worth. It usually costs £19.99/$19.99 (though I paid the pre-order price of over £30 prior to it's release back in January 2010) . You can get it HERE. Please note that you do require the Origin game platform to be able to download and install the game.

You will also find lots of deals over on Green Man Gaming and Big Fish Games usually have 70% off the first game you buy from them, plus they also have other deals occasionally. Desura was purchased from Bad Ju Ju games last year by One Play. If you already have a Desura account you can read details of what is happening HERE. As yet you can't access games you previously purchased via Desura (I have around 1400), but One Play are working to recover everyone's accounts and hope to do so by the end of March 2017. Indie Royale will also resume on a weekly basis, though at this time I don't know if previous Inde Royale Greenlight bundles will be honoured? Alawar, Gamehouse and Playrix entertainment have free games available (usually online versions) and other game houses such as the AAA distributors Ubisoft and Origin always have some games on sale. I've updated the Weekly roundup of game deals HERE to include a large list of other sites where you can find games on sale ( eg Origin, uPlay, GreenManGaming etc, as well as links to free online games as well as other game houses such as Alawar, Playrix and Gamehouse plus gaming news sites such as Rock Paper Shotgun and Game Seek, and included a list of free to play Massive Multiplayer games such as World of Tanks, world of warships, Liberators and Allegiance to name a few. For more details please go to the Weekly roundup of game deals over in the game discussion sticky section HERE.

Giveaway Team Contact and Moderation policy:

Continued from the first paragraph above........... I am posting this in light of the massive increase in negative comments not related to the game being given away, inappropriate comments and spam (Almost 700 spam comments were posted over a 24 hour period last month ) that have occurred over the past several months since the site was updated and in particular since the site started using Facebook, Twitter and Steam. This is a site that gives free games away, so it's quite shocking to see the number of negative and sometimes inappropriate comments being posted here, especially when they are not even related to the actual game that we receive. I always though getting something for free was a priviledge/perk/treat/ and deserves at least some thanks or gratitude and cannot understand why we get so many negative comments that possibly turn away potential developers who would otherwise have given the project their games. Of course we have freedom of speech, but as mentioned in my review above, there are rules to posting in this comments section; even a free society requires rules and regulations to run properly

I believe if we get lots of decent feedback about the games we get here, more developers would be happy to give away their games. Seeing lots of complaints (and spam) instead of feedback about the giveaways will not persuade other developers to give their creations away for free, especially when they may have spent thousands of hours working on the creation. So please bear this in mind when posting your comments. Any comment not about the game for example complaints, or if deemed unfriendly or inappropriate, will be deleted (usually with no explanation) or added to the spam folder, which automatically black lists the IP address you used. Although I have enjoyed responding to many of those comments in the past, I will no longer waste my time answering comments from community members who should have read the moderation policy.

Negative feedback about the games given away will always be welcomed because they can also be very constructive for developers, however, complaining about the way the site is operating or problems about downloading or installing the games or about Steam keys not received should be directed to the giveawayoftheday team via the contact form (with evidence of completed tasks, the name and email you used to enter the competition, or giveaway). I've linked to the contact form HERE; alternatively, if the problem is game related and it is late in the day (I can't moderate 24 hours a day), please also post your issue in the forums where you may get a response from the community. All games given away here have been throughly checked using several anti malware suites to ensure a safe fownload and in the 10 plus years this site has been operating, there has never been a game infected with malware. If your security software flags an issue, it's probably the Themida code that is used to protect the game from hackers or sometimes the non invasive adware that MPC games use. Themida code can also be used to hide malware, so some security softwares will automatically block anything with Themida code, even if it's absolutely safe to install. also other computer configurations (i.e. the way you have your computer set up) may have blocked the install. Often, such problems are related to your computers set up. i.e. your security may block the installation (for example quite a few game giveaways I've installed have been blocked by my copy of Zemana Anti-malware suite) Also please read the moderation policy which can be found HERE and if you do have a problem please check the FAQ's thread HERE. Thank you for reading.

FREE game offer from the moderator in exchange for quality feedback:

There were some winners from last weeks game giveaways, which I mentioned in reply to their comments Mavadelo (for Forge of Gods: Beauties and the Beasts Pack), Lahazard (for Forge of Gods: Beauties and the Beasts Pack), Torque (for Psycho Train). I've already given Mavadelo his key, but haven't heard from either Torque or Lahazard.

I've posted a list of over 200 Steam games in the forums HERE and will be adding more as time permits over the coming weeks. It is quite an extensive list of games taken from the 10 000+ Steam keys I've collected over the last several years; all were either purchased by me, with some )only a few) received free for pre-ordering games on Steam, plus a few from entering competitions and other offers). There will be a limited number of other keys available, such as Origin, uPlay and Desura keys (Desura has recently been purchased following the original owners demise and should be up and running by the end of March). I will announce the winner's from the giveaway the following week. If no announcement is made, it means no one posted feedback that qualified for a free game that week. There were no winners from the previous two weeks, though I am still considering a couple of comments from last week. I will inform those community members if I decide they are worth a game by email. If you have won a game, I will also post details in the thread I've created specifically for that purpose HERE. Once I've given a key away, the game and any comments by the winner will be removed from the list the following week. I will assume if you don't reply within a few weeks you aren't bothered about a key. Please post your preferences (list at least 3 games in order of preference over in the forums HERE. Thank you. Happy gaming.)

Depending on the quality of the feedback, I may choose to award games to more community members for each game given away, 'at my discretion'. The feedback must be about the game, and it must include a couple of paragraphs of feedback following the guidelines I've posted in the suggestions section of my review. i.e. your opinion of the game, what you liked and/or disliked plus suggestions for improvement. If you choose a game that is very cheap I may give you a second game; so, when choosing from the list I provide, please list more than one choice. If a game is chosen by more than one community member and only one key is available the key will go to the one I deem the most useful. I do have multiple keys for quite a lot of the games I've listed, so, don't be put off if you see someone else has chosen the game you want. I haven't indicated any of the games I have multiple keys for (though for example I do have several keys for the excellent Western themed AAA game Call of Juarez, which i picked up for free for purchasing several games via the Indie Gala store several months ago. spending a few dollars got me a copy of the game, so I made several separate purchases over a couple of days while the offer was still live.
I do own at least three community members a game from the previous giveaways that I posted several months ago. I'd totally forgotten about those. I do have a document with their names on, so they will get a game from the original list when I find the document (I'm extremely disorganized); or they can peruse the new list and choose something different. Just post a comment over in the forums in the appropriate thread. If you do post feedback with a view to getting one of the games and think you have covered the requirements, you don't have to do anything until I announce the winners the following week.
Please remember, this comments section is mainly for feedback about today's game giveaway. If you're not sure, read the moderation policy, which you can see HERE

I installed this game and promptly uninstalled it.....
1 - As match 3 games go, this one was lousy....it's not the classic "slide and swap" style game....this one plays very awkward.
2 - This is another game that starts full screen on first play, which is a big pain in the ass because it jumbles all the icons on my desktop and I have over 100 icons....yes, I know there are small applets that will restore the icons, but for some reason none of those work on my Win7-64, and I've tried them all.....I wish game developers would stop making games that open full screen on first play.
3 - I used to get MyPlayCity games all the time, but for some time now, whenever you start one of their games, you get a box that says "loading" and an advertisement......however, I know for a fact that the game is not really loading all that time, it's just on a startup delay so as to get people to read the ad....I know this because I went in and disabled the "loading" window and the games start instantly.....plus, each time you close one of their games, it opens the browser to their site....again, a pain in the ass.

It's all gotten to be a little too much with them.....I will no longer even look at anything from MyPlayCity.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi Chris

Sorry you are so disappointed with these games. Arxon is over 10 years old and wasn't designed for newer monitor resolutions, which is possibly the reason why your icons have been messed up. Oddly only one other community member mentioned this issue and she only posted the issue about 20 minutes or so ago. I get the really bad flickering on mine, though rebooting and making sure its set to full screen seems to have cured that problem for now at least. The issue is 'possibly' caused by the way you have your computer configured together with the games old engine design. It isn't MPC's fault., most games they have are much newer and designed for more modern computers, plus they are not the developer of the games, only the distributor. Most games that you can get from MPC are also sold via other commercial sites such as Big Fish, Alawar, Playrix and Gamehouse. The reason we get them free from MPC is becasue they earn cash every time your browser is redirected to their home page. Some of the money they earn goes to the developer of the game and is the reason we get to install them for free..

Installed OK on Win 10 x64 & I started playing the Adventure part of Arxon, but I found it very confusing. Just now I decided to try it again, but had the flashing problem others have talked about. When I boot my computer tomorrow, I'll try it one more time, since White Rabbit said rebooting worked for him.

I'm very unhappy, though, with the way this game and Rolling Idols: Lost City moved my icons around every time I opened them. Not worth the hassle.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi Laurie, I meant rebooting the game. As for the issue with icons being moved. There are programs that you can install that enable you to save where the icons go, so that if it happens again, y you just have to boot up the program and it will put your icons back to where they go.

I like this! Beautiful graphics, and a fun variation on Match-3 games, which I'm always looking for. Fun to play, although I haven't completely got the hang of it yet -- it will be fun to get better at it. Thanks very much, GAOTD and MyPlayCity!

Enjoyed the game, but it messed with my graphics a bit coming out of it. It was full screen and I first alt-tabbed to take a break. One other comment is that I would have enjoyed a mix of logic and matching. It helps prevent getting too familiar.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

I kept getting a really bad flickering after I changed to windowed mode. Changing resolution to a lower one may fix the problem as this is a very old game. Higher resolutions wont be native to the games engine.

Do I have to install the Software informer that pops up after installing the game? I haven't tried starting the game over yet, but it just keeps flashing and I can't play the game. I have win 10 pro. I haven't had problems with any of the other games that I have downloaded from here, But I recently got a newer laptop that has WIN 10 PRO. Don't know if that is what is causing the problem or not.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

No, you can click on the right hand button to close it without installing. The flashing could be caused by your screens resolution settings. I had the same problem when i tried to play in windowed mode. The game was made over 10 years ago before the higher resolution screens were common or even available.

Kathleen, I have updated my graphics card and even went down to Win xp to try to get it to stop flashing. That didn't help. I will try your suggestion of lowering the resolution

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Please let me know if it worked. not had time to check myself. Thanks

Kathleen, I lowered the resolution and nothing seemed to work. I even went to My Play City and downloaded the game there and theirs did the same flashing. I did install the game on my older Dell laptop which has WIN10 Home and it worked. My new Dell has WIN10 PRO and a different graphics card. Not sure why it isn't working on my new laptop. Thank You. Kathleen

Kathleen, I am not sure what you meant by playing the game in windowed mode. How did you do that?

I might be a clueless idiot but... this game is actually challenging. What a nice one we have today. I have started with adventure mode and already had to think more in the first few levels than in many of those match3 games we have seen coming through.

The concept of adding from the sides is a nice change of pace, the powerbugs can help you but can also severely bleep your game. The looks of the game are nice. Colorful but not to "Candy"
And there are the Endlless and logic modes to play. I won't play endless that much as I don't care for such modes in any game

I did take a short look at the logic mode. This starts out very simple (I only played the tutorial and first level) but I can see this becoming very complicated very quickly, for those loving logic titles I can see that turning into an addiction.

Best game in months from GAOTD I give it 9/10 (something that can become addictive can not get 10/10 :P )
As always... NO there are no programs installed without your permission, it is just 3 website shortcuts that can be thrown away. If you annoyed by te initial load screen commercial I say "look in the game folder and use logic" and you won't have it anymore, for the opening of a website at the end... there is a nice X in the corner of your browser, use it :)

Windows 10 x64 Pro. Not bad, still getting hang of the strategy. Better reread comments after playing a few rounds. Do like game. Exit function tricky when in game. Not a usual Menu on play field. Hit ESC a few times and somehow
the regular Menu page came up Looks like levels with get harder since even second one had that darn Pirates thing of throwing up a spider web cell like in the Ghosts version by this maker (I think). Those cells got really hard to deal with in that game to point of just quit. Maybe this will play bit 'fairer". Thanks GOTD.

beergas, Thought should add on couple bits. I was too hungry when gave game too fast of an initial run. Yes does have Menu in lower right of play field where Hint is. Kinda of caught onto a main play 'trick'. After too patiently moving the bug around outside of play field and not getting the countdown bar to move much at all, I started banging around within the field. So if (using right mouse button) you select red color, start clicking inside field near 1 or 2 already red bugs. Bang, got a match (or more). Repeat w/ whatever next color looks promising. The bar will move along nicely and win the set. Haven't tried the other two options, just timed. Much more satisfying to get bunch of explosive color bursts & often removes web cell too. Tutorial is a pain since it can cause you to think bug only finds a match if you keep trying outside positioning. Ugh. Go for the insides. Enjoy. Hope this doesn't post twice, captcha acting up.

Thanks for the update Beergas. This additional content certainly qualifies you for a Steam key. check out the list over in the forums. I'm having difficulty signing into my forum account at the moment, so please post your request here and once I've seen it I'll delete it. beergas, think you mean I should post email here & you will delete it. here goes unless this post itself is enough to indicate email.
Anyway thanks for the steam key offer!
PS Much enjoying Psycho Train. Got stopped at last by on the train harpoon part. Hint
keeps flashing on rear car but still no further only in finding the harpoon to fire. But will find the solution online or somewhere. Good one.

Hi Beergas

Thanks again for your feedback. Although I don't enjoy HOGs as much as i used to Psycho Train was a good one.

There was no need to post your email as I can see it whenever I moderate. The moderation panel has a side panel where certain details can be seen such as email, name and url. Do let me know what you want (if any). I will be adding more games to the list as time permits. :)

I was looking forward to seeing what this game could do, but I can not get the game to run. I tried all the Windows compatibility stuff, no go. Because it is the flashing problem, it must be incompatible with my video card, not Win 10. This now makes me wonder what else won't run with this card/Win 10.
Oh well, there are tons of other games out there.

TY anyway, GGAOTD and MPC. I know I will have better luck with newer games!

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

I had the same problem, but if I reboot making sure I've put it in full screen, it seems to work okay. My video cards are 2 x NVidia GTX 980 Ti's with 12GB of gRAM. I think it may have been the resolution I have my monitors set to. this is an old game before larger screen resolutions were available. I haven't changed my resolution to test it, but i reckon if you drop the resolution down it would cure the problem.

Arxon
A game from MPC that originally was released by Alawar Games I believe that is a clever Match 3 with some interesting twists.
Downloaded and installed well on Win 10 Pro x64 and was a fast download also ;) You choose the type of game you wish to play, and it starts out fairly easy but progresses in difficultly quickly from there. Believe I had a earlier version of this one years ago, but this one has really nice saturated graphics, and have not run into any glitches so far.
Has some unusual bonuses like the Destroyer bug and others, and we really had fun with this one so far, so check out this fun and quite entertaining game, as always YMMV. Thank you GGAOTD and MPC, and a thank you to Whiterabbit for his work in detailed breakdowns of these games for us as well.

Thanks JBurt, i think you've earned a free Steam key from my list over in the forums and I suspect I still owe you a game from last summer. Can't find the list with the names I owe, but i do remember you entering, and i think I owed you one.

What a fun game - though I'm not quite sure why, since I didn't completely understand the rules. I played the non-timed version (now I forgot what they called it) and had to make myself stop. If I'd change anything about it, I'd like to have a better explanation about the changing colors of the bugs, but maybe that's given in the 'adventure' mode. In any case, it was something different. And I thought it was cute that the little bug shakes it's head if you try to shoot on the wrong column. Thanks Stephen, MPC, and GGOTD for this game!

Download and installation without a problem.
Also no problem with full windows mode so far.

Clever variation of the classical match-3 which asks for some thinking from my part.
I already decided the logical part is nothing for me - too much thinking :-)

I recommend to try this out.

Thanks for the game.

Installs and works fine on Win 7 64-bit. Full screen is default and I didn't try to change it, so I did not experience any problems with blinking that others had. Tried the "Logic game" option and it has nothing to do with match-3 (which is good immo). Don't have the time to try anything else. Graphics is OK (esp. for a game released quite a while ago). Bugs don't make the loveliest game characters though. :-)

Unusual Match3 game in which you use different colored bugs to push rows so that you get 3 in a row or 3 contiguous pieces, to clear them. Different mechanisms than other games of this type so forces you to think in unusual ways about how to accomplish your aims. I'm not quite sure I fully understand all the methods & occasionally had to resort to trying to place my piece "everywhere" till one position succeeded....and then hope I could detect what "hidden" combination I'd achieved so I could learn how to make the correct moves in the future. Strangely addictive, though cascading changes make for a bit of a challenge in trying to line up subsequent moves. It would be helpful if the tutorial had more explanation, rather than just counting on you to grasp the same lesson they are trying to teach. Nonetheless, a fun and different variation on this type of game. Thanks to MPC and Alawar/Brain Storm for an unusual game. :-)

Now, in a shameless plug for another developer - some of you here have followed new developer Tuttifrutti & their attempt to get a new HOPA published. Their Darkarta: A Broken Heart's Quest recently was greenlit on Steam and hopefully will be distributed soon. It is a very good game, with a number of innovative puzzles and is an excellent initial effort for a new developer. I was lucky enough to get to beta test the entire game & it is well-worth playing. Unfortunately, Tuttifrutti is finding themselves short of funds to put the final few touches on the game and to keep their talented team together until the revenue from Darkarta starts pouring in, and have started a crowd-funding effort on indiegogo. If you'd like to help them out, please check out their campaign at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/give-darkarta-a-supporting-push-fantasy# . They have a fresh approach and are super-responsive to user input - it would be great if we could all help them succeed!

Hi Lurkercat

Thank you for your feedback.

Yes, I voted for this one. Looks gorgeous with its saturated colors. I'm sure many who visit here will be happy to see this released. They usually charge £6.99 for new HOPA release's. You can check it out HERE

I like match 3 games so was pleased to see one on here which I had not seen before. Quite nice concept, rather simple, as are most match 3 games, that is why I like them!
BUT I may be being stupid, but I could not work out why and how each level ended in success or failure. There was nothing I could see with the progress towards a certain number or similar. There was a time bar which went down, and if you had not finished by the time the bar was empty you lost, but I did not know what to 'finish'.
The game installed OK but sometimes, when on full screen, if left running and going to something else on my computer on return the game would flash rapidly, and so I had to shut it down.
Not sure if I will keep this.

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

In adventure mode you have to fill the time bar indicator that is located just above the statue (of I think Horus) that is located to the left of the grid. In adventure mode it is constantly reducing, but whenever you make a match it increases. When you fill the bar you move on to the next level, and as you have already pointed out, if the time bar reduces to zero, you lose and have to start the level again. The first level is very easy, but from then on it becomes increasingly difficult to progress.

Tried to install but to no avail.
Windows 10 pro x 64.

Hi Zippy (did you used to watch Rainbow) ;)

Do you get any error messages? Firstly, it's probably your security that is blocking the install due to the Themida wrapper. Try installing in safe mode. If that fails, temporarily turn off your security until you've installed the game. Finally, check the FAQ's thread that I've linked to HERE for other fixes.

Again the same videogame with different skin.
i dislike myplaycity games

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

It's a match three themed game, but with a different mechanic to other match three's, plus it has a third mode usually absent in match three's. Virtually every game made these days is a copy of a copy. Some games mix genres, others do just change the skins, but most do have something different, that appeals to those who enjoy that particular genre. When Arxon was released over a decade ago, there weren't that many match threes around, and it was definitely different to other match three's available at that time.

Going into compatibility mode also works. It's an old game, released when XP was king. I changed to XP and Admin mode and it then worked. Thanks for your alternative method, appreciated

Hi everybody and Whiterabbit-UK. :-)

Preamble: I'm using Win10 home x64, DEP always on, UAC enabled with max level, custom scaling 150%, resolution 1920x1080, color depth 32bit, refresh rate 60Hz.

No problems detected after doing pre-scans and post-scans with Win10 Defender, SAS free, MBAM 2 free, EEK free, GSAM (all definitions updated).
No problems detected after I sent the package to virustotal, metadefender, jotti: links at the end of this post.
Virscan seems to be "down for everyone, not just me".
Those webservices show the same false positives for GAOTD setup.exe found in last days/weeks/months/years: I won't repeat them.
No problems during game download, during its installation, at its startup.

Problems appeared when I changed the full screen option:
- the first time, when I untick it, the game correctly works in non-full screen mode.
- the second time, when I tick it again, the game starts to blink.
- the third time, the option doesn't work.
It doesn't work even running it as an administrator and even using the compatibility mode (8, 7, Vista SP2, Vista SP1, Vista, XP SP3, XP SP2).
Hence this game version (1.24R) seems to be somewhat buggy yet: just don't change the "full screen" option to enjoy the game.
It seems this game was born at the end of 2006 (found in internet), not sure about the age of this version (October 5th 2006 according to the game details in its file properties).

Thanks to the GAOTD team, in particular to Whiterabbit-UK!
Follow the white rabbit, guys!
Thanks for the game to Alawar entertainment (alawar games), Brain Storm, BigFishGames, MyPlayCity!

xilolee,

"Problems appeared when I changed the full screen option... even using the compatibility mode (8, 7, Vista SP2, Vista SP1, Vista, XP SP3, XP SP2)."

Did you try 10's compatibility troubleshooter? There's a troubleshooting applet in Control Panel, or just right click the .exe file that starts the game, & select Troubleshoot compatibility from the context menu. If you're not sure which .exe file to click, right click the shortcut or link that's added when you installed the game, and check the properties to see which file it links to & runs.

Using Windows 10 compatibility troubleshooter can make more changes than what you see on the .exe file's properties -> compatibility tab, & it's faster/easier than trying all the possible combos yourself.

Hi mike. :-)

Not sure it will work even if I remove all changes I made, I don't intend to try it by the way.
I tried the compatibility troubleshooter, but I think I can made all the changes directly from the shortcut, and faster (the troubleshooter asks questions like: the program complained about this? or that?... The program didn't complain at all = close me).

Here --> https://game.giveawayoftheday.com/arxon/ <-- Diane said:

"My only problem is it refuses to remember that I turn on "Windowed" instead of "Full Screen". It does switch to windowed but the next time, it loads in full screen again. It does remember that I turned off the music. It's funny that it remembers one option but not the other."

That shows 10 years ago the problem was there, hidden.

Thanks for reminding me that this was posted 10 years ago. I meant to reference it this morning, but got called away to fix an issue with my wife's car. It was first given away Nov 2006 while on the original site before the game giveaway site was created, then again the following year, which is the one you referenced. I'd already started to post short reviews then, but not as extensive as these days, lol.
