Suggestions:

If you win a key for Alien Shooter TD please give some feedback about your opinion of the game, for example, what you liked or disliked about it, or how it could be improved from your point of view . If you don't like this genre at all, please explain why. What, improvements, if any, would change your opinion? There are thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers ideas as to what their consumers (i.e you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content such as better or more original mini games, or a level editor that you would like to see that would make it more appealing to you. Maybe you think the graphics are a little dated and are in need of re skinning, or maybe you've just had enough of the genre and want to see something different or something with more originality?

If you don't win a key, don't mind playing games via Steam or miss the offer totally you can get the game 24/7 via Steam HERE. It usually costs £6.99/$9.99,

Alien Shooter TD 008
The Game:

Earth is under attack! Violent battles are raging the world and bloodthirsty monsters are on the prowl. You play the commander of a specialized platoon of elite warriors in the midst of a large-scale war. Fight or flight in a battle to save humanity and only by protecting your towers will you prevail.

The four things I need in a tower defense game are pacing, interactivity, flexibility, and progression. Pacing above all else. It can’t take forever to play and I have to be able to speed it up. It’s a tower defense game, for Pete’s sake; it only deserves so much time. These are comfort food games and, really, my involvement is minor. Once my towers are set up, I’m mostly done. So matches have to be relatively short and fast forwardable, especially if I might fail and have to start over. Most tower defense games get this right, because they know they’re for people who don’t have the attention span to play an actual real time strategy game such as the Civilization series, the Total War series, Ashes of the Singularity, Starcraft 2, Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, Battlefleet Gothic: Armada etc. . Alien Shooter TD has the obligatory fast forward button and brief rounds. You unlock open-ended survival maps if you want to dig in for an extended grind. I don’t think I’ve lasted more than five minutes on any of them, which is fine because my reaction afterwards was “I held out for almost five minutes and that’s all I get for it?”. Back to the short mission maps.

Alien Shooter TD 009
Alien Shooter TD 010
Interactivity is the toughest prerequisite for a tower defense game. My main job is to build a tower. Then it does its thing. It doesn’t need me. Eventually, I’ll pile up the resources to upgrade the tower, so that’s my secondary job. Build, renovate. Build, renovate. Build, renovate. Beyond those two things, I’m a spectator. Some tower defense games make me click stuff to scoop it up. There’s a little of that in Alien Shooter TD. Other tower defense games give you a hero, or maybe some active powers to drop on the map. There’s also a little of that in Alien Shooter TD. Some tower defense games let you get in there to do your own shooting. There’s none of that in Alien Shooter TD.

But interactivity in Alien Shooter TD comes from its identity. The developers at Sigma Team have been doing these Alien Shooter games for fifteen years. You move a soldier around, shoot a bunch of aliens, repeat as necessary. They’ve made about ten separate games of this stuff. But in this latest TD version, there’s no moving a soldier around. The soldiers just stand there, shooting a bunch of aliens who are doing the moving. You’ve placed the soliders like you’d place towers. But you don’t upgrade them. Instead, you give them ammo. You’re basically a quartermaster.

Alien Shooter TD 011
Alien Shooter TD 012
Which might sound dull, granted. But it’s a lot less dull than tower construction and renovation. Reloading a gun is the stuff of action movies. Watching the bullet count go down as the alien bugs surge forward is the stuff of sci-fi movies. A little box pops up when a solider is low on ammo. The box tells you how much the ammo will cost. Can you afford it? The box flashes red when his gun is empty. Different types of soliders use different kinds of guns. Shotgunners, assault riflers, snipers, flamethrowers, and a couple of sci-fi laser gun dudes. Each type of soldier goes into battle with three weapons, all thirsty for ammo. When you reload, you’re telling the solider which weapon to use. You’re making a call about the amount of money spent, the damage done, the time before the next reload, and so forth.

This feels more interactive than the usual tower upgrades. How long should your assault gunners use their Uzis? When should they pull out the Steyr-Augs? This is markedly different from upgrading your cannon tower from level one to level two. Ammo means constantly channeling your resources into reloading the guns rather than saving up to upgrade a tower. These soldiers are like towers that are thirsty for the resources they’re earning by shooting aliens. So do you call in more guys? Do you tell the guys on the map to use their better weapons? A little of both? The graphics change with the weapons, as you can see if you squint. But the sound effects do the heavy lifting. The heartier shotguns shound throatier. The miniguns whirr. The plasma guns make the pew-pew sounds you’d expect. Different sniper rounds have different gunshot sounds.

This is where flexibility comes into play. The solution to any given level is two-fold: which solider types do you bring and which weapons do they use. Ammo flow is a fundamental part of beating the harder levels, and I haven’t seen anything quite like it in other tower defense games. Alternatively, if you can’t hit on the right combination of soldiers and ammo flow, you can always grind until your soliders outlevel the mission. That’s where the progression comes into play. Alien Shooter TD has weapon drops, upgradable weapons, and skill trees for each soldier. All of these things are your money sinks. And you can freely play levels over and over to earn that money. It’s as much of a grind as you want it to be.

Alien Shooter TD 013
Alien Shooter TD 014
The early maps are simple and wide-open, but the harder maps force tough choices based on range, sightline, and multiple avenues of attack. The developers apparently haven’t heard of keyboards, as there isn’t a single hotkey in Alien Shooter TD. Not a single one. The space bar doesn’t even do anything. It’s also strange — but expected, given the genre — that these aliens aren’t actually attacking your soldiers. Instead, they’ve got somewhere else to be. What kind of standoff against aliens doesn’t involve the occasional soldier getting devoured and the defenders overrun? Oh well, the base is lost, but as least no one got hurt! But for a throwaway tower defense game, Alien Shooter TD does what it needs to do: pass the time by slathering a map in alien gore.

Edited reference accessed HERE originally posted by Tom Chick, January 19, 2017, edited by Whiterabbit-uk Feb 19th 2017.

Alien Shooter TD is an isometric tower defense that, for all its depth and detail, is as tedious as it is an eyesore. The graphics look as though they were ripped from a PS1-era development kit, and the gray/blue color scheme does nothing to lend itself to visual interest.

The objective is to place units along a clearly defined path to prevent three waves of aliens from infiltrating a building they give you no reason to care about. Players can also place explosives in obvious bottlenecks and call supply drones. Once units and explosives are placed, you had better hope you don’t change your mind, because there is no option to move anything on the board. If you want a gunner in a different spot, or a rocket team instead, players have to destroy the original unit (at a small penalty) and spend in-game money to change strategy.

Alien Shooter TD 015
Alien Shooter TD 016
Every decision in the game requires money. Explosives, supply drones, and units must be purchased at the beginning of each round. Weapon upgrades and even the skill tree require insane amounts of money. During actual gameplay, units will run out of ammo, which must be bought. How can you possibly earn enough money to last more than two minutes? By mowing down waves of alien spiders, worms, and slug-bas, of course! Each enemy death earns a small amount of cash. So strategy always boils down to ‘buy tons of bombs and hire rocket teams or machine gunners for maximum carnage.’

The game takes a page from CS:GO and offers loot crates in-game which are filled with various weapon and ammo types. These can be earned by completing certain objectives during rounds or, you guessed it, be purchased. The only real upside to these crates is that they if they provide you with better gear, you can scrap old gear for in-game money or materials, offsetting costs for upgrades.

Game play during rounds feels more like spinning plates than creating a solid strategy. Since everything costs money, players are limited to how many units can be on the board because they have to constantly purchase supplies for everyone. Eventually, the game becomes a frantic click-fest as you scroll the board to look for empty units to refill.

If this were on Newgrounds in 2004, Alien Shooter TD would have probably been a big hit. The attention to detail with the skill tree and gear upgrades is impressive; but not allowing for an actual planning period, the limitations imposed by the need for an in-game fortune to support your army, and nothing more than ‘aliens bad, must kill aliens’ to draw players in and make them care makes this a poor addition to Steam’s 2017 roster.

Conclusion:

Personally I loved this game, the TD genre is one of my long time arcade game favorites and coupled with Alien Shooter theme, even more so as I've been playing Sigma teams shooter games since they were first released 15 years ago. I highly recommend you enter this competition, especially if you like the genre. Not really suitable for young children.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the developer Sigma Team for giving away 100 keys for this Adventure RPG and also to the game giveaway team, as always, for securing other ways to get free games, in this case a Steam key.

Useful Information not related to today's game giveaway:

The problems section that used to be posted here in the Game review is now included in the Game Discussion FAQ's thread; which you can find HERE.

I've updated the games section that used to be posted with the review. The thread is now called 'Weekly round up of game deals', formerly the games section of the weekly reviews. You can find the new thread (which I've posted in the sticky section of the game discussion forums to make it easier to find if you are perusing the game discussion forums) HERE.

Alien Shooter TD intro 001
Alien Shooter TD intro 002
If Alien Shooter TD doesn't appeal, you may find other games either free or for less than the price of a cup of coffee via the 'Weekly Roundup of Game Deals' thread which I've posted a link to above, or HERE.
The free game over on Origin is still the excellent atmospheric Sci Fi RPG third person Shooter Mass Effect 2, but it will probably be ending soon. If you've still not got a copy, get it now, it's well worth. It usually costs £19.99/$19.99 (though I paid the pre-order price of over £30 prior to it's release back in January 2010) . You can get it HERE. Please note that you do require the Origin game platform to be able to download and install the game.

You will also find lots of deals over on Green Man Gaming and Big Fish Games usually have 70% off the first game you buy from them, plus they also have other deals occasionally. Desura was purchased from Bad Ju Ju games last year by One Play. If you already have a Desura account you can read details of what is happening HERE. As yet you can't access games you previously purchased via Desura (I have around 1400), but One Play are working to recover everyone's accounts and hope to do so by the end of March 2017. Indie Royale will also resume on a weekly basis, though at this time I don't know if previous Indie Royale Greenlight bundles will be honoured? Alawar, Gamehouse and Playrix entertainment have free games available (usually online versions) and other game houses such as the AAA distributors Ubisoft and Origin always have some games on sale. I've updated the Weekly roundup of game deals HERE to include a large list of other sites where you can find games on sale ( eg Origin, uPlay, GreenManGaming etc, as well as links to free online games as well as other game houses such as Alawar, Playrix and Gamehouse plus gaming news sites such as Rock Paper Shotgun and Game Seek, and included a list of free to play Massive Multiplayer games such as World of Tanks, world of warships, Liberators and Allegiance to name a few. For more details please go to the Weekly roundup of game deals over in the game discussion sticky section HERE.

Giveaway Team Contact and Moderation policy:

Continued from the first paragraph above........... I am posting this in light of the massive increase in negative comments not related to the game being given away, inappropriate comments and spam (Almost 700 spam comments were posted over a 24 hour period last month ) that have occurred over the past several months since the site was updated and in particular since the site started using Facebook, Twitter and Steam. This is a site that gives free games away, so it's quite shocking to see the number of negative and sometimes inappropriate comments being posted here, especially when they are not even related to the actual game that we receive. I always though getting something for free was a priviledge/perk/treat/ and deserves at least some thanks or gratitude and cannot understand why we get so many negative comments that possibly turn away potential developers who would otherwise have given the project their games. Of course we have freedom of speech, but as mentioned in my review above, there are rules to posting in this comments section; even a free society requires rules and regulations to run properly

I believe if we get lots of decent feedback about the games we get here, more developers would be happy to give away their games. Seeing lots of complaints (and spam) instead of feedback about the giveaways will not persuade other developers to give their creations away for free, especially when they may have spent thousands of hours working on the creation. So please bear this in mind when posting your comments. Any comment not about the game for example complaints, or if deemed unfriendly or inappropriate, will be deleted (usually with no explanation) or added to the spam folder, which automatically black lists the IP address you used. Although I have enjoyed responding to many of those comments in the past, I will no longer waste my time answering comments from community members who should have read the moderation policy.

Negative feedback about the games given away will always be welcomed because they can also be very constructive for developers, however, complaining about the way the site is operating or problems about downloading or installing the games or about Steam keys not received should be directed to the giveawayoftheday team via the contact form (with evidence of completed tasks, the name and email you used to enter the competition, or giveaway). I've linked to the contact form HERE; alternatively, if the problem is game related and it is late in the day (I can't moderate 24 hours a day), please also post your issue in the forums where you may get a response from the community. All games given away here have been throughly checked using several anti malware suites to ensure a safe fownload and in the 10 plus years this site has been operating, there has never been a game infected with malware. If your security software flags an issue, it's probably the Themida code that is used to protect the game from hackers or sometimes the non invasive adware that MPC games use. Themida code can also be used to hide malware, so some security softwares will automatically block anything with Themida code, even if it's absolutely safe to install. also other computer configurations (i.e. the way you have your computer set up) may have blocked the install. Often, such problems are related to your computers set up. i.e. your security may block the installation (for example quite a few game giveaways I've installed have been blocked by my copy of Zemana Anti-malware suite) Also please read the moderation policy which can be found HERE and if you do have a problem please check the FAQ's thread HERE. Thank you for reading.

FREE game offer from the moderator in exchange for quality feedback:

There were some winners from last weeks game giveaways, which I mentioned in reply to their comments Mavadelo (for Forge of Gods: Beauties and the Beasts Pack), Lahazard (for Forge of Gods: Beauties and the Beasts Pack), Torque (for Psycho Train). I've already given Mavadelo his key, but haven't heard from either Torque or Lahazard.

I've posted a list of over 200 Steam games in the forums HERE and will be adding more as time permits over the coming weeks. It is quite an extensive list of games taken from the 10 000+ Steam keys I've collected over the last several years; all were either purchased by me, with some )only a few) received free for pre-ordering games on Steam, plus a few from entering competitions and other offers). There will be a limited number of other keys available, such as Origin, uPlay and Desura keys (Desura has recently been purchased following the original owners demise and should be up and running by the end of March). I will announce the winner's from the giveaway the following week. If no announcement is made, it means no one posted feedback that qualified for a free game that week. There were no winners from the previous two weeks, though I am still considering a couple of comments from last week. I will inform those community members if I decide they are worth a game by email. If you have won a game, I will also post details in the thread I've created specifically for that purpose HERE. Once I've given a key away, the game and any comments by the winner will be removed from the list the following week. I will assume if you don't reply within a few weeks you aren't bothered about a key. Please post your preferences (list at least 3 games in order of preference over in the forums HERE. Thank you. Happy gaming.)

Depending on the quality of the feedback, I may choose to award games to more community members for each game given away, 'at my discretion'. The feedback must be about the game, and it must include a couple of paragraphs of feedback following the guidelines I've posted in the suggestions section of my review. i.e. your opinion of the game, what you liked and/or disliked plus suggestions for improvement. If you choose a game that is very cheap I may give you a second game; so, when choosing from the list I provide, please list more than one choice. If a game is chosen by more than one community member and only one key is available the key will go to the one I deem the most useful. I do have multiple keys for quite a lot of the games I've listed, so, don't be put off if you see someone else has chosen the game you want. I haven't indicated any of the games I have multiple keys for (though for example I do have several keys for the excellent Western themed AAA game Call of Juarez, which i picked up for free for purchasing several games via the Indie Gala store several months ago. spending a few dollars got me a copy of the game, so I made several separate purchases over a couple of days while the offer was still live.
I do own at least three community members a game from the previous giveaways that I posted several months ago. I'd totally forgotten about those. I do have a document with their names on, so they will get a game from the original list when I find the document (I'm extremely disorganized); or they can peruse the new list and choose something different. Just post a comment over in the forums in the appropriate thread. If you do post feedback with a view to getting one of the games and think you have covered the requirements, you don't have to do anything until I announce the winners the following week.
Please remember, this comments section is mainly for feedback about today's game giveaway. If you're not sure, read the moderation policy, which you can see HERE

Congratulations on your win John. If you've not received your key by now contact the giveaway team via the contact form, which you can access HERE.
Please let them know which email and name you used to enter the competition and if possible proof that you entered by showing the tasks you'd completed; (via a screen capture). It may be that the code has been sent to a different email that you have used in the past? I originally used an old email that I stopped using (due to the amount of spam it was getting. When I first entered these competitions both here and on the applications side of the project) I didn't win anything despite there being at times a very good chance of winning (when the first competitions started not many entered them) and even one time a 99% chance; whereas I noticed other community members were winning virtually every time. Even though I don't use that email for anything now, I happened to check it some time ago and found details of several applications I'd won, plus a couple of Steam keys despite having used an email I created specifically for these competitions. Bearing that in mind please check all of the other emails you use just in case you used one of those previously. If you've used a throwaway email, that could be a problem as the code may have been sent to that email?
My daughter entered this competition because she likes Tower Defense games and luckily won a key ( from the number of possible entries you could make, plus the number of keys available and the total number of entries made I calculated that there was a 20 to 1 chance of winning a key for Alien Shooter TD, so you were both very lucky). She received the key almost immediately the winners were announced.
Regarding your suggestion to add a sell function. I don't think that will happen. I doubt the developer who has given away 100 keys would give them away if he saw that they could sell them on to make a profit. The idea is to give community members who cannot justify spending their hard earned cash on a game they would like to play the chance to grab one for free.

why they don't add function "continue, save, restart at wave x if base destroy" in endless mode like a plants zombie.

alien shooter td only save best time in endless mode.

I'm not sure why I should comment. I wont be able to give any intelligent comments unless I win the game and that wont happen for almost a week. By then no one will be reading the comments for games that they didn't win. However, if you can give me a good reason to comment and I win a key I'll certainly do so.

Furthermore having to identify pictures to prove I am not a robot does not endear your system to our comments.

Thanks DocSid, I hope you win one. At the moment the odds are at least 20 to 1.

I have a bunch of their other Shooter games so I'll leave this for others

This is nothing like their other shooter games. it's a Tower Defense take on alien Shooters and is very good. Worth trying for a code.

Greetings,

May I please request (this is the 2nd time this has happened) that, in the emails you send out for these games, you specify clearly that it is not a free game giveaway but a chance to win the game? The email I received did not say anyhting about having to 'win a key' for this. I don't look at ones that I have to enter a drawing for as I usually don't see them until the evening of the day, and by then the 'key's are all gone.

This is all the email stated:

'The attack is under way. The armed forces are mobilized. Violent battles are happening across the whole globe. You are the commander of an elite warrior platoon and find yourself in the midst of large-scale war events. Your actions will determine whether blood-hungry monsters destroy our planet, or if humanity comes out victorious! The game was created keeping with the best traditions of Sigma games, no concessions of any kind - everything is just like in real life!'

Thank you and keep up the giveaways :)

Personally I never check to see if I've received an email to see if there is a game giveaway, for me It's much quicker to just visit the site and check as there is almost always going to be a giveaway each weekend. I've even started checking throughout the week because recently we have been getting weekday offers as well. But if you prefer to check your email first, that's okay. Unfortunately I have nothing to do with the emails sent out. I believe they are an automatic process. I'm sure if the giveaway team read your request they may do something about it. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. Regards W.R.

code

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi chaplyak.s

There is no code available yet. Winners of the 100 codes will be announced next weekend. To get a code complete the tasks. The more you complete, the better chance you have of winning a key. Sharing the giveaway page on your Facebook account will bag you more entries each day. You don't have to complete every task, but not doing so will reduce the chance of winning. The odds of winning are already almost 1 in 3 chance of winning and as time passes those odds will increase, but it's still worth trying as this is a great game (IMO)

Where can I download?

...........................................Moderator comment...................................

Hi Nguyễn Minh Tâm

There is no download here. The game is available on Steam for £6.99/$9.99 HERE or you can get it on the Google play or apple App store via the developers (Sigma team Inc) web site HERE. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be a demo available a tleast not at this time for alien Shooter TD. There are 100 keys up for grabs by completing the tasks on the alien Shooter game giveaway page HERE. Good luck.
All I can say is the game is well worth the £6.99; (I got 60% off by buying it via a Turkish friend of mine as the game sold on Steam isn't region locked like some games are). I initially purchased it at full price, then a Turkish friend offered it for 60% off the Uk privce, so i requested a refund via Steam and got it. Then saved a significant amount. Still If the opportunity hadn't come up to buy it cheaply I would still have paid the full price as it is well worth the money. A very well made game from a good developer.

Chúc may mắn.
