I'm slowly recovering from Covid and still don't feel up to sitting at my computer yet; so, I've posted an edited repost of my previous review of this game.
Alien Outbreak 2: Invasion
In Brief
Alien Outbreak 2: Invasion is an old school Space Shoot Em Up (Shmup) with a top down vertical scrolling viewpoint on the lines of the original space invaders, except you don't get anything to hide behind. This is actually much better than that old game (I spent a fortune putting 10 pence pieces into Space Invaders cabinets back in the late 70's). It was originally given away on the 30th December 2017 HERE where it received a 79% positive rating from 29 votes with 18 comments and again on the August 29, 2020 where it received a positive 81% from 36 votes with 2 comments which you can see HERE.
You can find two useful threads over in the forums that link to various free shmups HERE and HERE

Introduction:
Ever since the beginning of history, humanity has never faced danger from an enormous intergalactic army, who aim to destroy mankind and populate our planet. You are the last hope for our species; so, put doubts and fears aside and do your best to protect Earth from these alien invaders!
Increase your survival skills by gaining better weapons and become the best space pilot of all time. You will face hundreds of well-equipped enemy spacecraft who are as merciless as Ming the Merciless (Flash Gordon). Manoeuvre between mines and bullets shooting them back and destroying detachments of enemy ships one by one. Simple and low-armoured enemies are followed by heavy battleships.
Pick up bonuses and power-ups falling from destroyed rivals and shoot your weapons covering the space with enemies' wreckage's. Use heavy missiles that destroy a ship with a single shot or a heavy electric charge which knows no barriers. Set a mine and pick up a power shield making your ship invulnerable. Stealth technology will hide you misleading enemy strikes and a special feature that doubles your fire rate. Improve your primary gun together with the main armour and fly through 10 levels straight to the boss

The Game:
Alien Outbreak 2: Invasion is a pretty old (dated graphics, but still looks decent) top down Space Shoot Em Up, with a retro feel; reminiscent of Space Invaders, but with a greater variety of aliens and weapons. You shoot through ten waves for each mission; at the end of the 10 level, you meet a boss ship, (which I failed to pass on my first attempt -heed my advice below). There are eight missions each ending with a boss wave, making a total of 80 levels. Power-ups are dropped frequently, as are energy drops, which boost your weapon abilities. You can also stack secondary weapons, which I suggest you save for the boss levels. The dollar signs are not money but points. This gives the game a sense of re-playability for those who like to beat their scores. This game is clearly an homage to earlier space shooter titles of which there are now hundreds, this is a decent shooter, well worth downloading.
The ship is controlled by the mouse with the left mouse button controlling your primary weapon and the right mouse button the secondary weapon. Collecting energy boosts the energy level meter located in the top right of the screen when you collect enough energy to fill the meter, you are awarded a weapon upgrade. The highest I managed to upgrade was level 9, but you can raise it to level 10. The higher your weapons upgrade is, the better your chance at beating the boss at the end of each tenth level. If you are hit the energy level indicator goes down. If it goes to zero, you lose the weapons upgrade to the previous upgrade.

Alien-Outbreak-2-017
If you lose all weapon upgrades your ship is destroyed. The left indicator (top right of the screen indicates the number of secondary weapons you have and the current weapon loaded. Some bonuses double your basic attacks or make your ship invulnerable, others increases the rate of fire, gives you an invisibility shield or slows down time so that enemy movement and weapons become slower; all bonuses expire after 15 seconds. It's a good idea to make yourself familiar with these bonus types so that you can take full advantage of them; for example, knowing when the defence bonus is active so that you have no need to avoid weapons fire. Secondary weapons include rockets which destroy all ships with just one hit, lightning that destroys any enemy ship that crosses it's path and bombs that fragment and destroy any enemy ship that is within it's kill zone. None of the secondary weapons can destroy the boss with one hit but are a useful aid in destroying it. All enemy ships include an health indicator that for the boss is very useful as it gives you an indication as to how near the end you are.

If you enjoy playing space shooters that are derived from the original Space Invaders, this is well worth downloading; though it wouldn't make my top ten favourite shmups list. That said, it's still a decent space shooter. I originally gave this a 7 out of 10 for game play and graphics, but on replaying it I've upgraded it to an 8 out of 10 because I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, plus i liked the upgrade system and not losing my best weapons immediately following a hit like a lot of shmups.

The music is nondescript; personally, I usually turn it off and play my own music, for this type of game, or if possible edit the music folder if present to add my own favourite music that fits with the theme of game; for example, I usually play something like Tangerine Dream/ Klaus Schulze/Kitaro/Harlequins Enigma/Pete Baumann , or totally opposite, some heavy metal like Mercyful Fate/Black Sabbath/Killswitch Engage/Rob Zombie, some space rock music like Hawkwind or even something more classical like one of Ravi Shankar's ragas. :)

Whiterabbit-uk,

The last image in my review above implies the game was made in 2010, but that's when MyPlayCity got the license from Alawar; the game is much older; (released by Bee Games via Alawar on the 1st May 2005).

I'm on the back end of the Covid infection. Still got a raised temperature, but it's not significant, and the other symptoms although still present are not as bad as they were early in the week..

The only issue now is that my son is showing signs of the virus. His graduation ceremony is on Thursday 14th , so it looks like he's going to have to miss it; which is a great shame as its a special day.

Whiterabbit-uk, heartfelt best wishes for you, your son, & the rest of your family. Not to be alarmist, but DO be mindful of the potential aftereffects from this virus, which can last a year or more, even in those who were mostly symptom free. The most serious IMHO, based on published research, are the effects it can have on the heart, which sadly happened to my sister. We're old & relatively inactive, & it was detected before it could cause more severe problems, but if you have family members who are athletic, I'd suggest they take extra care, having it monitored etc.

Before I get into the review phase, Whiterabbit-UK I am sorry to hear you are under the weather. Hope you feel better soon. I had gotten COVID 19 in 2020 and it was no fun. I hope you are doing well. Had also managed to install Steam for Linux a couple of days ago and let the community know I was doing OK.

Today's game comes from Alawar which was developed in 2010 as a futuristic space shooter game where you move your mouse around to shoot enemy ships. This game was no doubt inspired by popular space shooters such as Galaga, Galaxian and Space Invaders. One game in particular from the arcade it reminded me of was Galaga 88 which took the Galaga brand name a bit further with deeper gameplay.

The play mechanics are simple you just move your mouse around to move your ship and gun down the enemies. There are no actual keyboard controls here for those who want to know :) For those of you who don't like clicking the button constantly you can actually hold down the left mouse button and it has a decent rate of auto fire to help those who may need that to play the game.

Difficulty of the game is pretty decent. I played only on the Normal level and got a good challenge out of it although it has different difficulty levels if you feel up to the challenge. Each level has a different wave of enemies with unique flying patterns throughout the screen. If you shoot a lot of stuff on screen and see powerups fly, be careful not to get caught in the bullet storm while grabbing it.

For a 2010 game, this is visually stunning, still relevant to today's giveaway of the space genre as an excellent alternative to the games we loved and grew up playing. In the options menu the game says it has 16 bit color by default. But offers a 32 bit mode. Given the age of this game, many computers that this game will be installed on today will be safe enabling this option.

I would say there is a handful of computers that may get sluggish on this color depth but in reality it would be next to none (Yes some people are still running Windows XP!)

Overall, this is a very enjoyable game that has adaptable skill levels to the way you play, especially if you've never played a game like this before.

Speaking of ship shooters, right now, Capcom is running a sale on Steam where individual games are 99 cents to own from within the app. There are the 19xx series of games , Carrier Airwing, GigaWing , Varth among a few other shooters I may have forgotten in this review. The game packs are normally expensive on their own so it may be wise to stock up.

The sale is across all platforms - I stocked up on 14 games myself for the ones I wanted on my Switch Lite.

sailorbear510 aka Jason, Heh! Yes I do still have one or two programs which won't run in 64-bit Windows 7 (my OS of choice on my main PC) even when those programs are set in Compatibility Mode to XP; so yes I do still run XP now and again, albeit as an XP VirtualBox under Windows 7. :D

Yes I do have a separate computer which runs Win 10, but only because that's the OS which was installed on it when it was purchased. That PC certainly isn't 'powerful' enough to run Win 11 (fortunately!). Everything I've read about Win 11 makes it sound more like some horrible "locked down, WE know best" Apple OS (UGH!), which puts Win 11 firmly in "over my dead body" territory. :)

First of all, Dear Wabbit,

Hope you and the family feel better soon. I hope Callum(sp?) makes it to his graduation. Covid has stolen so much from so many people.

sailorbear510 aka Jason,

Re: Those Capcom Arcade Stadium DLCs

Which ones are the ones I should get? I have Ghosts and Goblins. If you were to pick 10, which ones would you get?
