The Game
Alexandra Fortune is the latest intrepid explorer-type character to star in her hidden object adventure, and Alexandra Fortune - Mystery of the Lunar Archipelago is full of familiar trappings: a missing mentor, a mysterious journal left behind, exotic locations to visit, ruins to explore, and a goofy sidekick. But the game simply doesn't do these things as well as many of the games that it borrows its ideas from.
The game begins when Alexandra's grandfather, a renowned adventurer, disappears unexpectedly, leaving behind his journal. The journal contains many references to a secret place called the Lunar Archipelago, and sketches in it look very similar to an amulet that Alexandra's grandfather gave her when she was a girl. Alexandra sets off to solve the mystery of the Lunar Archipelago and hopefully find her missing grandfather in the process.
007

008
The game takes place across a ring of tropical islands that Alexandra will explore one by one. Gameplay is hidden object adventure fare blended with inventory item puzzles in the style of the Samantha Swift or Mortimer Beckett series'. Instead of searching a cluttered scene for random items, you'll search for pieces of tools and other key items, fit them back together, and place the items back into the scene to solve puzzles. In other scenarios you'll have to find straight-up lists of items relating to the story at hand, such as helping a boatman pack his belongings into a box to prepare for an upcoming tycoon.
Alexandra Fortune isn't as interesting of a heroine as Samantha Swift (from the Samantha Swift series), Cate West (from the Cate West games), or some of the other stars of titles with similar stories and game play. Nor is the writing as compelling, nor the puzzles as clever or well thought out. Sometimes, in fact, solving an inventory puzzle is as simple as dragging all of the collected items onto a character to give those items to the person, or putting artifacts of the appropriate color onto pedestals of the matching color. You're more likely to get stuck because you can't find one of the items in the list rather than becoming genuinely stumped by a puzzle.

Even if you do get stuck on a puzzle, after a short amount of time has passed you can just skip it altogether. And if you can't find an item, clicking on the hint amulet - which recharges after a short amount of time - will reveal the location.

Conclusion
The game has pretty gorgeous graphics with well lit scenes with objects that are relatively easy to find; no squinting trying to find items that are ridiculously small or blurry. That said, there's nothing unique about the nondescript ruins and generic jungles and temples. In truth, nothing about Alexandra Fortune really sets it apart from other similar games. It's perfectly playable and not a frustrating game at all, but a lack of compelling story or unique puzzles means it's not a title that you're going to remember in a few weeks, or want to play a second time.

Problems
If you are posting late in the day I would also suggest posting in the main giveaway forums in the game discussion section as well as in the comment section. If you’ve installed the game but it won’t work for some reason, it should still be registered, so someone may be able to help at another time. Unfortunately if your problem is actually installing it then once the giveaway period is over there’s nothing that can be done until the game is given away again (though that isn’t guaranteed. Sometimes you are able to install the game after the giveaway is over so long as you've already downloaded it, but it's not guaranteed. I've managed to install a giveaway an hour after the giveaway has actually finished.

Reinstalling game box shouldn't affect any previous freebies. :). (You need to install the free Gamebox from Alawar to access the free games, which for newcomers change approximately every month). A Request for help
Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average between 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of 'potential' cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away even more decent games.
Please leave some feedback once you’ve checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain what your reasons were for the feedback you post. You could also leave suggestions for improving the game, for example, this game could do with more block types for the levels editor, add more power-ups, describing the ones you think would be suitable, add some mini games (which seem all the rage in some arcade games now) or enable the user to be able to change the in game music easily.
Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to post a constructive comment.
Regards Whiterabbit aka Stephen

Looked appealing, sounded like it would have unique puzzles.
Storyline banal; way too many dialog boxes breaking up the game play!
Why are all the men childish & idiotic? This is supposed to be entertainment, not real life. Feminism is great, but any true feminist would have left those boobs stranded on an island.
Everything is controlled; there is no adventure. HO too easy; everything is over-simplified.
Game is very brief and I have no reason to ever open it again; no replay factor.

Solutions:
Get rid of the excessive dialog.
Get some real men.
Allow to explore the islands in whatever order wanted.

Probably too much to ask to have better HO/puzzles...and to add a reason to play it a second, much less a third time.

Good Luck! Thanks for sharing!

I would love to try and play this.

I downloaded the previous days software and it had no problems. This one, the whole display moves over to the left and I can only see the options button and a little of the map. I have tried setting resolutions to varied different modes to no avail. I updated my drivers for video to see if that would fix it, it didn't.

I've done a google search to see if there's any answers out there and haven't found anything to help out. (I have intel g33 chipset video card (I know, ick, but I'm not a big game player.) Any suggestions? (It does start and everything, so it validated fine, but now it's claiming it was a Jan 13th day only give away and the time is up to install it, so I'm hoping I can fix without reinstaling, because at the moment that means it's a wash.)

I would like to say...

Thank you GOTD and developers for putting these games out for us to try. :)

To No.22: I had the same problem, no hint was available. Then I noticed you had to combine two items (seeds and bowl) and give to the bird which then let fall a feather!
So everything was fine, you had to find the way yourself. I'd suggest (as I was indeed thinking to deinstall too as I was sure it had to be a bug while it turned out to be part of the puzzle...) that the hint-function should be available for item-combining too instead for finding objects only.

Anyway. I really like this game, the messed up rooms are not just randomly thrown in objects but a fitting realistic scene! That's a very important point for me.
But when my game reached the point when Alexandra wants to leave the first islands with that pirate-map-guy, it just crashed :-( Well, turned out I was able to get past it after a restart. Apart from that no bugs so far, i give it a thumbs-up!

@33 Stephanie Hobson: Thanks for the helpful information. Unfortunately, while I was pleased to see all of the item locations, it showed me that I had missed none of them - even though the one feather was still not remaining to be found.

I should mention too, that as the linked site in the message (as well as at least one other post here) states: "the 'hint' button remains active throughout the game' - this is Not the case as I experienced it. The Hint button is no longer active when the tenth feather is the only object not found in puzzle 3.

In other words, all objects, save the tenth feather are found, and the hint button/medallion is greyed out/in background.

The spinning cursor is a hint in itself. Move it around the screen, and it will spin faster as you get closer to the object and slower if you move away from it. Once you reach the object, it will flash.

One last minute comment: when a hint is used the item flashes very quickly. If you miss it you are stuck. You can't get a new hint, can't go to the map, can't get rid of the spinning cursor. Let the item flash again if it isn't clicked on within say 10 seconds. I had to go to the task manager to shut down the game 3 different times when I missed the flash.

I like HO games. This one is good, not fabulous, but interesting...
until - the "feather" thing, mentioned by others. I've gotten to the same place twice (two different profiles). I've even used the walk-through and screen shot. I collected all the feathers, but one of them does not "register" and there are no more to find. There is no way to proceed. Will have to uninstall.

Thanks anyway. Best to you WR.

I am not a HOG fan, but this is quite enjoyable. Playing on win 7 64, no problems.Graphics and animations are very nice. Played through the whole game in a few hours. I admit I did cheat using the walkthru 3x. At the end of the game, I did not even know that I had come to the end. There was no congratulations, etc. Just asked if I wanted to play again. I clicked on that, and it started over. I did not see any point to playing again, because I think the scenarios would be a repeat.
I love platformers, like Turtle Odyssey, Super Cow and Alex Gordon. I know they are harder to produce than HOGs, but it would be great if you could arrange to have more of those! I do appreciate this site, though, from the time you did have a game a day. Keep up the good work!

Hi Stephen,

My Win 7 reinstall is nearly complete. I'm in the process of reinstalling some of the more useful tweaks. During the course of my reading I encountered the following post on HOWTOGEEK.com which might explain why some people seem to have trouble with games not working while others don't. Perhaps this might help them.

"The whole point of disabling Aero is that some older games don’t work very well until you disable Aero, and run them in compatibility mode. Thus, disabling Aero can help speed up the games.

I’ve personally encountered this scenario, which is why I mentioned it. Perhaps I should have clarified further, but it’s a roundup of tips, not really the place to have an in-depth analysis of why it might or might not help out. =)

That said, you guys aren’t necessarily wrong, most modern games should work just fine without disabling anything."

In the Jaguar Cavern/Reflections the main character says: "It's dark in here. Before I can anything else, I must find a way to light this place" --- I believe you need to add the word DO as in: "Before I can do anything else" Haven't played it all, but that stood out to me.

@ 34 CHERRYG

In order to fill the cup of coffee you have to use the tea kettle on the water, then put it on the stove and use the matches(box and matches are separate, you have to combine them) to light it and make the water hot. You should have already ground the coffee beans and added the ground coffee and the sugar first to the cup that you have set on the saucer by the coffee grinder.

#34 - place the coffee cup on the saucer. You should be able to proceed from there. Some of the actions in this game are not intuitively obvious. (I too tried to fill the coffee cup with water and had to use a cheat to see what I needed to do. The clue didn't seem to find the saucer for me.) Also, some of the actions seem unecessarily repetitive - probably to keep the game consistent. For example, when filling the box, it would be nice if the pieces just went to the box when found instead of them going to the inventory and then the player needs to put them into the box. Other than that, it's a decent game with enough minipuzzles to keep it interesting.

There is a bug in my download of Rising Sun / Temple Hall. I cannot get past that, due to inability to find a piece and having the Hint go black at the beginning of the HOS making it impossible to use. I deleted my first download and downloaded a second time, deleted my profile and started new doing the game over. I also looked up the Walkthrough on Gamezebo, and used that picture to carefully to pick up every single piece circled. Still short one piece in a 2-piece blue/gold jaguar, and still finding my hint function has gone black again. I must assume others have downloaded without this problem over the last 4 years, so how do I get the playable game?

Also see above for two mentions of "walk thru" for this game.

SPOILER ALERT:

Remember the game has puzzles as well as hog. To get the feather you must feed the bird where upon it will drop the feather.

Thanks for the screen shot and help Stephanie(#33). Went in with another profile and discovered that there are 11 feathers in my version of the Elder's Hut, not 10 like I originally thought. I went to the walkthrough link and found the answer.Sneaky, Sneaky. Should I tell the answer? I'm laughing at myself but sure did learn about HOG games. This is only the 3rd one I've played. Just wondering if GGOTD has a fascination with hidden object games. Please how's about an action game of even a odd slot game here or there or an RPG maybe a frist person shooter even a Simulater.
Or are you resticted too certin sites?

The hidden objects in this game are boring. An awful lot of the things that must be found are square plates, and pieces of square plates are just not that interesting. Doing one is okay; doing seven or eight in a row is dull. Finding 12 feathers in order to assemble a feather duster is also dull.

It seems as if the makers wanted to find good justifications for searching for hidden objects, while making the actual hidden object searches boring. It's a hidden object game, and we're all along for the ride -- you don't have to try so hard to justify our looking for stuff, but you should make the stuff we look for interesting.

The difficulty level is bizarrely variable. Some of the hidden objects are so large, clear, and obvious that I think this is supposed to the a first hidden object game for young children, which would be a cool thing. But then some feathers or block pieces are so small and dark that the game seems way too hard for little kids. You might want to figure out who your intended audience is and target the game to them. Right now, it seems as if the game is too easy for adults in some places and too hard for kids in other places.

The simple, basic, easy-to-understand story goes much better with a game targeted to children than one targeted to adults, so I'd recommend that you make all of the items as bright, colorful, interesting, and easy to find as the ones the boatman wants and market the game to kids.

Sounds like the same glitch I had the level where the 3 masks are at around 85% I was able to solve the issue by grabbing the grey piece on the left side column and it didn't re-crash.

I finished the whole game this morning only bug I landed on.

btw does anyone know of a freeware to actualy make HOG games? I know playfirst at one time was offering a engine to build games but now nothing available.

Well, since I'm not really a "gamer", I shall tell you about me lady friend who is playing the game as I write this. She likes it because it is not as "frustrating" as the other HOG game she played years ago. Can't think if the name of that other game, but I remember it was almost impossible to find the missing pieces and she was getting upset. This game she says is nice, relaxing and interesting. It's her second HOG game. The music is most enjoyable and relaxing she says too. Thanks much for this one.

On first run, decreased resolution of monitor to 800x600. Unclicked full screen and it didn't happen after that. Otherwise seems to work fine in regular Windows 8. As with most of these games, you need a physical keyboard to enter a player name, but after that you can use just touchscreen. Didn't have the problem mentioned earlier about the 2 dragons, but can't get past the kitchen. Don't know if that's because it is running from SD card. Water is running, but I can't fill the cup to make coffee. At least with this quirk, it's taking me longer than the hour that yesterday's game. OK basic no-brainer game to play when I don't have internet access waiting for train.

In case you don't want to look at anything else, here is the link to the screen shot showing the location of the 10 feathers. Hopefully this will help.

Fine Win 8 x64 Pro. Full screen, nice graphics, hints help. Can be lot of hogs to find sometimes, like the feathers (doable, last one is hidden if rem right, used magnifier when hint blanked out). Some are 11 to find of small items. Intra game puzzles.
Did have unusually long 10 min d/l in early am on cable. Thanks for funness.

To 22 & 23: the last feather is behind something (can't recall what right now). IIRC you need to take a stone key and open a lock and there is the stone feather. It might be something else but I do know that feather is hidden.

It's an okay game. I have completed it.

I don't like games that you cannot turn off the custom cursor, so that was a minus. The music was repetitive and started getting on my nerves. The graphics were okay. There was way to much dialog.

On the plus side it had a counter that let you know how far along in the game you were. Which brings me to the error I got at 85% complete:

"Access violation at address 004047C4 in module 'LunarArchipelago.exe.' Read of address FFFFFFDC."

Had to kill it with task manager. I went back into the game and was able to finish.

It was good for about 2-3 hours of game play especially for those that don't like wandering back and forth in Hogs!

Up until that glitch it played fine on my Dell running Windows XP Media.

Hi Whabbit! Happy New Year!!!

I wonder whether all copies are glitched? I would have tohught the game would have been fixed if that was so as all the big distributors sell this game?

Hi Suki, Happy New Year. :)

To all those complaining about ANOTHER HOG, all I can say is, be patient. Like I have been when there were weeks on end with nothing but shooters. ;o)

I had this game from Sandlot, but retrieving games purchased there has turned out to be well-nigh impossible. So I'm glad to see this. Seeing the screenshots jogs my memory that I played part of it, but didn't finish it.

Old HOGs like Huntsville or Mysteryville (despite the humor) are torture to play now, though at the time they were great. But then Big Fish broke ground with Ravenhearst, adding diabolical puzzles, and HOGs have been evolving ever since. This one is older, and is a HOG with puzzles/minigames. The ones now are more "adventure light" with HO scenes. Some don't even have HO scenes, LOL. Just find inventory, like old adventures.

Wish they could mix up the genres more here, but hey, free is free! If it's a genre I hate, like shooters, I shrug and move on. Next week, maybe it will be better. We're a diverse group here, and you can't please everyone every week!

I got the same problem with Sandlot games. This is what worries me about digital downloads and DRM. I lost over 800 arcade games (temporarily) after Reflexive were sold off to amazon. Amazon allowed customers several months to ensure games were registered then closed shop. They didn't figure that everytime you reinstall the games you have to reregister them. Thankfully I found one of those registration generators that allows me to create working reg codes for all of my Reflexive games. It took me nearly 2 years to find one (partly because they are basically illegal). I've also lost several games from my Dirtect 2 Drive accoubnt as they were not transferred over to my Gamefly account when they bought the rights.

@23 Linda: Since your problem is Identical to mine - I would say that your "day wasted" is the sad truth... :( (see #22)

Mine is win7-64 so it appears OS-independent.

FWIW: I went to the trouble of deleting all references to the game in the registry, prior to the reinstall. Apparently there is something 'buried' somewhere - or I used the wrong search word [Lunar] in identifying the registry entries.

I did find some such entries included in 'permitted Phishing sites' in the registry - Not clear why they need to have those... :) But if you don't want them doing That - don't forget to delete those Keys as well.

Installed perfectly and having same issue as #s 22 & 23--cannot find the last feather. Hint does not light up and have clicked each section of the hut. Otherwise, good graphics, loads great.

#19 There is another solution as I used to have the same problems for downloading once upon a time. Now I use a download manager such as Orbit downloader and it works wonder, furthermore, it is also free. Even if it crashes, your download can resume as it is kept in memory as a temporary file. Sometimes, I stop a download for updating or surfing... And then I resume the download again. It also tells you if the link to download has a resume ability. If it does not, then well, c'est la vie! Just restart it.

Good game, I love the graphics, and the quality of it. I recommend it.
Happy New Year to all!

Loaded easily seemingly without problems on Windows XP S3. However while playing the game at the Village Elders Hut it starts giving me problems. I cannot find the last feather in a group of 10 feathers. I have found everything else without using the Hint button. However when I found the next to last feather, the Hint button goes away even tho I did not click on it. I've clicked on every square inch of that page with no luck. I even tried deleting the game and cleaning out the recycle bin, then downloading it again. When I installed the second game, it opened to the same page that gave me trouble with the first game under the same profile. Then I deleted the first profile and started all over with a new profile. Same problems on the same page. Any ideas anyone? I'm about to delete everything and call it a day wasted. Linda

Tried it, got hung up on the very last feather on puzzle 3 (as I infer from the file names). Clicked on every last square millimeter of the screen (more than twice for certainty). Tried to restart (several times) to be able to bypass any 'did not record' occurrence in the game software. Cannot do other than return to the point of exiting the program.

Cannot restart, cannot move forward ... Ergo: Cannot leave installed.

So far it's not very challenging - which is good! (I once had a game in which I couldn't solve the very first puzzle, so I couldn't go anywhere else or do anything with it. A complete waste of time!)

This one is easy on the eye, light enough for older eyes to see and with things to find which can actually be found in a reasonable time. The story is okay so far, and I assume will take more shape as the game progresses.

The music is bearable and appropriate, although I shall probably turn it off after a while as usual. But this is a pleasant enough game to pass a tea break or a lunch break, without claiming possession of your mind for the whole day while you try to figure out the next link in the puzzle chain.

Thanks again, GGAOTD and Whiterabbit! Two enjoyable offerings this weekend. 8-D

Downloaded and installed on Vista Home 32-bit, without any problems. One likes a simpler HOG game to play from time to time, and I think ! will enjoy this one ! I am having one difficulty - in full screen mode, the game screen "flickers" ... Annoying, but not interfering... Is there anything I can do about this ? Thanks again White Rabbit for all your help ! Laura

...........................Moderator Comment..............................

Hi Laura, try changing your screen resolution, or if you don't want to do that, go into compatibility mode and change some of the settings such as visual themes and display scaling.

I had started downloading this early in the afternoon. During the download, the RAM memory usage indicator kept climbing ... 80%, 85%, 90%. The download progress also kept climbing, but at a slower rate. After about two hours, the memory usage was showing 98%! The download progress was at 92%. Then it crashed.

I totally reset the computer before attempting to resume the download. Now, there's no problem. And therein lies the real problem. It's known as "Windows Rot."

After resetting Vista, I have a much higher download speed, and the memory delta is near zero (there is no memory leak associated with the download).

Unfortunately, the original download could not be resumed, even though that IS supposed to happen on my OS. So, 200MB of wasted bandwidth from Giveaway servers, oh well.

I might suggest a few ideas:
First, perhaps these larger downloads could be posted as split files, with the size of each fraction in the 50-100 MB range. Modern "unzippers" can reassemble split downloads.
Second, until the first idea is implemented, Vista users may want to consider resetting Vista before attempting to download large files.

I usually don't do much on comments or reviews regarding these game giveaways because most are for my teenage grandkids' rainy day visits. One or two month old reviews probably won't do much good.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy 2013.

Sorry to hear of your download woes. The split files have been suggested before. I think its a good idea, especially for those with slow speeds. Happy 2013 to you too. :)

Thank you for your feedback.

I completed the last givaway in a record time (for me!) of 1 hour 6 minutes. although I already had the game under a different name. It wouldn't run before, but yesterdays version did with no problems. Anyway, now looking forward to playing this one, which it appears I don't have!

Download took ages, but installation was short and without any problems on Windows 7. The game started nicely, great graphics! The beginning is for a HOG a bit easy, but it is fun to find out, what to do with found objects. Waisted quite a while on it already, it is definitely a keeper. From me till now 7 points out of 10.
Suggestions: introduce different difficulty levels with better help for the lowest one.
