This game does not save any progress you make, it's almost pointless to play past level 1.

I download the file (twice) and in the first time, I activated it and run the setup. But it give me a corrupt file warning when I try to installed and the system terminate the instalation. The second time I do nota activateit first, just run the set-up but it just freeze the installation at about when it was at 80% of completion.

What am I doing wrong?

.........................Moderator Comment.........................

Unfortunately the giveaway is now over. That may have something to do with being unable to tegister the roduct. The game has to be installed within a specified period for example, in the UK it's between 8am to 8am the following day.

..................Moderator comment..............

The downloaded file is a zip file. Once you open up the zip file you get a read me, an activation module and a set up file. however the game giveaway is now ovr, so the activation module will no longer work. Sorry. If you'd posted this before the giveaway ended I may have been able to help.

Mine showed 60 minutes when started also, but I have noticed that the 60 minutes stays at 60 minutes no matter how long I play. Made sure I went over 60 minutes to be sure, right now it seems as if it is just a nuisance, not really limiting my time.

XPSP2, MCE, 32

download, extract, install...no problem...

activation module connected, brought me to the GGOTD site...no problem...

game, 60 minute trial...problem... : (

no joy today, Whiterabbit...first GGOTD i couldn't register...uninstall, reinstall, tried install/activate & activate/install...

my best guess: it kept requesting direct disk access, & i kept blocking it...the games usually do not request that, but when they do & i block it there's never been a problem (they all ran fine without)...

my problem was probably self-inflicted...lol...maybe some other community members security software was blocking that as well?...

the screensaver today also asked for direct disk access...i blocked it, & it ran fine after a reboot...

both programs today said something about the "Outrix" company/corporation?...apparently, my pc doesn't play nice with them...

looked cute, & i've never played mahjong...maybe next time...can't whine much over one problem in a couple years...
: )

thank you Gambana, GGOTD, & Whiterabbit (who can finally go get some sleep after another weekend marathon)...

.....................Moderator Comment..................

No sleep for me yet Violet. got to go get a new external hard drive. I've got four at the moment, totalling 3.75 Terabytes (3750Gb) and they are almost full, plus all my HDD's on all my computers are also almost full as well. I'm trying to take stock of what I have. I don't trust DVD copying any mor because loads of my discs especially ones with images on them throw up a cyclic redundancy error message when i try to access the discs, resulting in quite a lot of files lost. So I need another external so that I can move the files around and file everything sensibly, one disc for games, one for applications etc etc, lol

Most of the files i have are game related, for example i have at least 700 Gb of files on one of the larger externals just for one game that has (or had) a large modding community because the game is now five years old. A lot of my games have modding communnities that create extra content, which makes those games very good value for money because there is so much extra free content. In some cases so much so that you could never explore all of the extra stuff. I'm also a bit of a kleptomaniac when it comes to games. :)

Sorry you weren't able to get this weekends game. As you say it's probably a security issue thats stopped some from being able to register this game. Personally I don't think its a great loss because there is (as the guy above says) a large free base for Mahjong games, some of which are better than yesterdays giveaway. To be honest theres only so much you can do with a game of solitaire mahjong. most games are basically the same with just the tile imagery changed, plus in the case of games like yesterdays giveaway a side story and mini game.

have a nice week.

Stephen

60 minutes of free game should not be named GameGiveAwayOfTheDay. Luckily there are many Mahjongg types out that are always free. It's sad that I had to learn about their trick the hard way, but humans can always learn from their mistakes, after the mistake they know how to prevent it should it happen again - never before.

......................Moderator Comment....................

It does unfortunately seem that quite a few community members had problems activating this game. But I can assure you there is no tricks involved. The giveaway project has given away hundreds of games away over the three years since it started back n Dec 2006. It's unfortunate that a few have not been able to register the program for whatever reason. There are generally a few thousand downloads for each giveaway every day that it runs. There are perhaps around 20 of those that haven't been abe to register the game today. I personally got the game registered with no problems on three different computers.

If I'm reading your post right your saying never again - like you mean you'll never bother to download another game giveaway. If thats so you'll be missing out on lots of future games. It's obvious from the number of members that were unable to registert this game that there was something wrong with the registration process. I've never seen so many members unable to register a game before. Someone mentioned that the game tries to change the operating system somehow. Maybe your security prevented it doing so and thus you couldn't register the game. (just a though). In any event you're right, there are hundreds of mahjong games available for free download. See Grayloxs post for a link to Caiman's, where theres three pages of them. There's also a link in the forums somewhere that links to a site where you'll find a lot more. (You may find it in the free games synopsis)

Hooray a mahjong game today!!!! I first became hooked on Mahjong back in 08, June I think it was, when the Kristianix games Mahjong Epic was given away. (I wish you would offer that for giveaway again, for some reason this laptop spontaneously began opening it with the graphics totally white except for a few black lines on the bottom & I would love to have that game back again

Thanks GAOTD, I owe you for hooking me on both Mahjong games and Hidden Object games :D

OT @ Whiterabbit:

it seems more & more community members have been having activation/failed to connect problems...

MS & the EU had their battles over Windows inclusion of IE-only...MS finally said they would not include any browser in Win7, then it was reported that browser choices would be made available during install...

also, some may have modded (via nlite, vlite, etc.) pc's without IE...

question: does the GOTD activation module still require IE be installed & "work online" selected?...

if so, an IE-free pc would not be able to activate from GOTD/GGOTD (?)...

the GOTD team had to update the read-me to include run as admin may be necessary...maybe IE should always be included in the system requirements for giveaways?...

sorry for the OT...hate to see the install problems...

Be warned that this game uses the nasty Themida copy protection system, which works by installing a rootkit (i.e. it hacks your operating system).

This game wouldn't install for me. Something about the alchemy-mahjong.exe not working. I've done it every way that has been mentioned here and still it doesn't work. I did notice a file for buy me there.

Its like the folder does not exists. I've lost count on how many times I have install and re-install and done the activation before and after I've given up.

BIG kudos to Graylox :D for posting the link to Caiman's REAL Mah Jong game!

I always think of games like today's GGOTD as like an advanced form of Pelmanism, but then I used to play genuine four-player Mah Jong—with the Hong Kong rules—with a bunch of friends.

To Stephen: FWIW I would also check out avast! antivirus. And the independent anti-virus/anti-malware comparative tests at AV-Comparatives. ;)

@56, D:

quite a few had that message for the "SpellQuizzer" giveaway on the main GOTD site...
last giveaway: http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/spellquizzer-2/

developer response:
“The software uses an anti-piracy protection system that disables it when a Registry or file monitoring application such as Regmon, Filemon or Process Monitor is loaded. This is because those utilities are commonly used by crackers to try to figure out how the software is registered and protected. Even after you close one of those applications their monitoring driver is still loaded in memory until the computer is rebooted. The only solution is to 1) not start a monitoring utility like the ones mentioned above if you are going to be using SpellQuizzer and 2) if you have had one of the above utilities running then reboot before starting SpellQuizzer. Sorry for the inconvenience.”

maybe just a security/monitoring program you usually have running is interfering?...

hope this helps...

My Anti-Virus, ESET actually did detect the game as a virus. I do like ESET for the little number of viruses that are not caught in the net...

However, this game does not seem to be any risk to your computer. See here:

@56. I guess I wasn't clear enough. The game itself comes up with that message. I am very careful to not install extra stuff (but I checked anyway to be sure -- software informer has not been installed, there is no icon, it does not appear in the UNINSTALL list from "control panel->programs and services", there is no new folder under "Program Files", and nothing looks out-of-the-ordinary using Sysinternal's Process Explorer). I was actually curious enough about this error message that I exited every program I could one-at-a-time and re-launched the game. I was down to my UPS monitor, Dynamic DNS monitor and Avast. The game still gave that goofy message. As an aside, what business does a Mahjong game have looking at what is loaded and/or running on a user's system -- which is sort of what the message implies?

.......................Moderator Comment......................

Thanks for the extra information. the game has no buisness monitoring what's loaded or running. Unfortunately the three installations I've made on three different computers doesn't give any indication as to any monitoring system, so I'm at a loss to give advice. sorry.

You could try uninstalling the game then reinstalling it and thenm see if you are still getting the same message. I hope this solves the problem.

when I try to activate, I get " Failed to connect " till the giveaway ends, and this has happened 3 times now, so I've lot 3 games. This did not happen over the last 18 months.

Solution please. Regards Bill3.

.........................Moderator Comment.................

Hi Bill,

I get that problem all the time, I think its partly to do with my provider, but the solution I find works is I reboot my modem and router. However it can also be caused by a corrupted cookie. To clear the cookie cache right click on your internet browser icon (assuming you are using Internet Explorer) and select internet properties. You can then clear out your temporary folders and get rid of your cookies. Hopefully that will clear the problem you are having. (You may lose all your saved log in deatails, but that can be a good thing security wise). If the problem isn't fixed you may have to turn off your security as well. Also try rebooting your computer after rebooting the modem (and the router if you have one). Please let us know if one of those fixes work, thank you.

There's a different procedure for clearing your internet cache if you are using Firefox or one of the other browsers. Here's a lkink that will point you in the right direction:

#16 -- "game is timed, but ... grandma friendly"

Second this; love puzzle games, hate racing the clock.

Works fine (as noted by several previous posters) for W7/64-bit.

Am presuming that the "four player" games referred to are REAL mah jong, rather the mah jong-styled puzzles that we all know and love.

...............Moderator Comment......................

Yes the four player games are the real thing. I much prefer the four player game myself. I used to play mahjong with a group of friends when I was still at school. I still have my mahjong set that is made of resin and bamboo. Gorgeous set, but no one ever wants to play any more :(

I installed it (Vista), activated it and now it says "A monitor program has been found running in your system. Please, unload it from memory and restart your program." WTF?

............................Moderator Comment........................

The game is clean of such programs, however what may have happend is you've allowed a program thats always ready to be installed via the game giveaway installation process called Software Informer that monitors your programs and informs you when there are updates. This pogram is installed only by your permission, but it's easy enough to press the wrong button and get it installed without actually realizing you've done so. Check your system to see if Software Informer has been installed. Usually theres a slightly oversized icon installed to your desktop thats partially invisible. If its there it will be that that is being flagged as a monitor program. It's always important to read any read me files and to watch every step of an installer wizzard to ensure no unwanted programs are being installed.

Personally I like Software Informer becasue it does let me know when my programs can be updated. Its a little like another program I used to use called Version Tracker that tells you when there are new drivers available (though that one costs around $30 a year to subscribe to)

i am very sorry, never knew it was illegal to reinstall a game.
so tecnacly its only free the first month?!

still worth to try it maybe
greets Raoul

..........................Moderator Comment.........................

Hi Raoul, The game is supposed to be a demo, and to buy the full version costs around $26. According to the web site some parts of the game are disabled in the demo, so if you don't mind losing part of the game that's up to you. To be honest, its up to the individuals conscience as to what they do about buying a full version game. If you've found a way to circumvent the games protection that is illegal, but if you feel comfortable doing that its none of my business. I just feel that the developer deserves some recompense if you really like a game. Though I also appreciate that you may not be able to afford the game. A better solution which I've followed through when times have been tight is to contact the developer and explain that you really love the game but can't afford a full license (for whatever reason); sometimes you may find the developer is kind enough to give you a free license. :)

I could not find a read me file. The only textfile i found was the licence agreement. Can you tell me what the activation code is?

Anne

...............................Moderator Comment...................................

The licence agreement (EULA) is found within the games installed folder. You have to look at the unpacked zip file. Double click on the zip file that you downloaded from the game giveaway site. Inside you'll see three files, ones a read me, ones an actication module and the other one is the games installation file. You need to click on the activation module first to get the registratiojn written to the registry, then install the game. You should then find the game is registered.

It says you have 60min of gameplay remaining. Why?

...........................Moderator comment......................

Have you activated the game using the activation module. The read me says the following:

Installation

Unzip the package you`ve downloaded and run the activation program
Activate.exe which is included in the package, then run Setup.exe to
install the software.

NB: if you are a Vista OS user you will probably need to run Setup.exe and Activate.exe in the name of administrator

It may be that you are activating 'after' the game set up................... which may be the problem with activation becasue it does say activate before installing the game.

Try deleting the progra,m, then activating firt. Or activate then reinstall the game. Uncheck the play now tick box at the end of the set up wizzard, then start the game from the installed shortcut. (one of the rare times we actually get a desktop shortcut). :)

My wife (#31) only got the demo as many others did. She is running XP Pro. I'm running W7 and it worked authenticating for me.

I worked on her machine and discovered if I ran the actvate.exe from a COMMAND PROMPT, it worked.

Might want to try that. Note that the file is DELETED if it works.

I find it difficult that you have not heard of ESET. ESET, GDATA have been rated number one and two for the last three years by PC Magazine. Also high on the list is Malawarebytes and Threatfire. Kaspersky is like AVG, and McAfee......not even close. They miss too much. Maybe you should investigate this yourself.

Runs great on Vista 64 bit. An interesting twist to the tile-matching game. I like the hand-drawn tile images and the old wood look to the tiles. Too many games try to make everything look perfect, and they end up looking boring.

I doubt if I'd ever pay for a Mah Jongg game since there are so many free ones. The extra activities in this game are not enough to compel me to buy it. Although it may sell well at $9.99 on sites like Alawar and Reflexive.

There are some freeware alternatives, including the Alice tileset, at this site:
