A unique game that is not easy but the joy you get when you solve a puzzle is immense. More please!

I also had the black screen and flashing. Win10 with a 4k monitor in 2560x1440 resolution.
I fixed it by manually changing the compatibility to use 640x480 resolution. The game would then run, but with poor resolution. I then went into the games options and changed it to not be in Full Screen mode. I then closed the game and went back to the compatibility and removed the check on 640x480. Now the game runs in a window with a reasonable resolution.
Note: I manually changed the compatibility. In the game's folder, Right-click on game.exe and pick Properties, then the compatibility tab, then check (and later uncheck) the 640x480 option. Don't bother with the High DPI settings, they didn't work. Don't bother with the compatibility troubleshooter as the game throws errors with it's suggested settings.

JB, Here the changed DPI settings did the trick (W10)

Nice fairly easy HOG. Yes, there's no save button, because the game saves automatically when you exit: I've tested that and it works.
Installed and opened on Win10 Home Premium without any problems. Thanks to all concerned at Toomky and GGOTD for tis one. :)

I am not sure whether Alabama Smith in Escape from Pompeii has been given here before, but I've been playing for the last hour and I loved the game!
What I liked about the game is that it has an Expert mode (for advanced users) and a Casual mode (for normal users). In Casual mode, it lists out the the things you have to find. If you find this makes the game too easy, enable Expert mode. In Expert mode, the game does not tell you what to find. You have to rack your brains and discover what is to be done!
However, I think the game would be even better if they could improve the between level animations and add some voice-overs.
Lastly, a warning for people who click randomly: At every level, there are things for you to find and puzzles to solve. Your score increases as you solve/find more things. However, if you click randomly on items, the game reduces your score. So be careful about random clicks!
Here are some videos of the game (to help you decide):

Installed ok on Win10, but I can't move the cursor after opening the app. Is there a fix?

W11, latest update (with the CoPilot on right of taskbar). Useless, all I get is a BLACK SCREEN. Random flashes on my disk drive activity light. Hit some keys and I get back to the desktop eventually. I am using 3840x2160 desktop resolution so that is probably the cause, program can handle it or doesn't try setting the required resolution. Typical of games from that age I guess?

Irvs, I have the same issue.

If you close the game you have to start from the beginning when you reopen it. There is no way to save your progress.
If you want to stop for awhile I would suggest just minimizing it until you are ready to play again.
This game has been around for awhile; was release 2007-2008.

LadyLei, was excited to try this one until I read your post. If it erases your progress when you close it, it's basically unusable (wouldn't ever consider leaving a program open for days). Would love to hear from others if this is a common problem or perhaps just unique to your setup. Thanks for the heads-up.

LadyLei,
In W10 I can continue the game after closing it.

Right click on the icon for Alabama Smith. Click properties. Click the tab at the top that says compatability. Check the box that says "Run in compatability mode. Use the drop down box and pick windows xp (service pack 3). Then it should work. If it doesn't show (service pack 3) pick any thing with windows xp, or can try windows 8. You can also try to check Run this program as an administrator. DPI settings are there also if needed. Hope this helps as the game is from 2008.
I did not have any trouble saving in Windows 10 64 bit. Its better to install all the games generally outside Program Files or Program Files (x86) such as C:\Games and not into the default protected directory it suggests which is C:\Program Files (x86)\ToomkyGames.com\Alabama Smith, as otherwise you may have errors trying to save settings to that location sometimes with some older titles which can cause issue sometimes I found.

LadyLei, I don't get the same results on Win10Home. The game saves automatically when you exit and it reopens at the same place next time.

LadyLei,
It's saving progress for me. When I go to main menu and exit the game then come back in and press play, it takes me right to where I left off. I can't imagine what could be causing yours not to.
My issue is that in full screen, the game is pushed over to the right. In windowed mode it is fine. When I try to troubleshoot compatibility it gives me all these "lua file", etc. not found pop-ups and I have to close with task manager.
Looking at Irvs' comment after yours, we all seem to be having issues, though different ones, so perhaps it is just buggy all around.

DataDragon,
The windows xp choice alone did not fix my issue of the game in full-screen mode being half off the screen to the right however, checking both items on the DPI choices did fix it. Thank you for the suggestions!

Very nice game, but I've just started it. DPI adjustment necessary before playing.
