I downloaded this game for my grandson, but it downloaded as a 60 minute demo and he was very disappointed. Did I do something wrong?

Look, if you want an action game that's free, you can get a high-quality side-scroller or a low-quality FPS or sim. I can't think of any 2D action concept that couldn't be thought "retro" in some way or another. People like you should stick to Bejeweled.

For a free game, it's okay, I like the cartoonish style and the weapons are cool. However, there are so many better free shooters out there. Plus, the music is repetitive.

The game runs great, the graphix are creative and cute, but the keyboard controls were awkward. There should be an option for mouse control somewhere. I beat the game in a very short time and was left wanting more levels.
I really enjoy what you guys and gals do here at this site! I like to be able to get a couple games without having to worry about spyware and the like getting in. Keep up the good work!

Well, regarding all of the negative comments, I truly don't understand them. This is a mostly great game. Not everything has to be an $80 game to be enjoyable. I liked it, the game ran smoothly, correct scoring, colorful, creative imaginations, and such. For people complaining about no/limited mouse support, it should not be a big complaint, as a larger percentage of scrolling shooter games require keyboard input. I had no problems with controlling the ship, firing the main weapons, or the secondary weapons, as I simply mapped the controls to the keys I want to use that are comfortable for me, just like you would on Unreal Tournament, Crysis, or any other game.

The game is almost perfect, but there are three main things that bothered me. The first is that at the end of every level you complete, you do not keep the gun/upgrades you have earned, and therefore have to start out at square one every level, which is frustrating for me. I think you should offer more powerups, and carry them over through the levels, or until you die.

Second thing, is the hit detection is not very good, meaning, sometimes you can hit the enemy directly, and it does not recognize it, which is a cause for frustration, especially in shmups.

Third thing is the beginning weapon itself, is just not very well designed, as it does not shoot straight forward, but range is short, and below where you actually are on the screen. It could be a better weapon, if possibly used as n upgrade (or downgrade), and have the main starting weapon shoot directly in front of you.

Thanks GGAOTD and Alawar for this offering!

The graphics are impressive and very imaginative. I found the fact that the ‘bullets’ did not exactly flow expected directions to be puzzling, annoying and challenging. To start with this unexpected part of the game play annoyed me, however as I continued to play I found this to be a fun twist to the game. The comments about being able to add a mouse or joystick were very appropriate; the ability to use these in play is a very desirable feature. Another feature you could add to entice players would be to be able to change the game play direction from playing left to right to playing right to left. Very few games have tis feature, and as this game is slightly quirky already it could only add to the feel of the game. I have also noticed that left handed players often state that the ability to change the game to better suite their hands is something they like.

Quick Review:

I really enjoy games from Alawar. But today’s game El Airplane was a little boring for me. After installing the game (Which installed smoothly and fast on my computer) I started playing the game. After a good 5-10 minutes I stopped playing because I hate how they programmed the controls. In order for you to attack an enemy you have to use your mouse with shots out bullets, then you have to use your arrow keys to move the plane and if you want to use a bomb to attack an enemy you have to click on the space bar.

Scoring:

Gameplay: 5/10 - Really bad controls (You must use your mouse, the keyboard arrow keys, and the space bar.)

Graphics: 7/10 - Decent graphics.

Music: 5/10 - The music just keeps looping.

Loading Time: 9/10 - Loads pretty fast on my computer.

Overall: 6.5/10

This game would have been a lot better if the controls where programmed properly.

I love this silly, quirky game!It was worth the download just for the giggle it gave me. By now I have enough games to please every mood(Thanks to GGAOTD)that it is fun just to see something that is a spoof on serious games. I do believe this will be a hit with the small kids too, just because it is imaginative. I really like how you can chose any level to start. Thanks Alawar for this wacky gem.

Again there are a lot of people that comment without downloading. And there are a lot of people that prefer $80.00 games, (or perhaps they just like "match 3" games).
This is fun, silly, and a great diversion for younger players or older players, but not kids in the "I'd rather be rude" age.
This is well worth the download.

I just played a few minutes of this game on the easy level. It didn't seem to matter if I hit the enemies with my ammo or with my "plane". But as I said I played on the easy level, so it may be that way as to not discourage children. I am not sure if I will keep it or not because you have to use the mouse and arrow keys at the same time to play. I prefer mouse only games, I will let my grandsons play it before I decide. I like most of the games GGOTD gives us, I place them on my external hard drive. Thanks for your service GGOTD, keep it up!

Stile di gioco classico, ma con una grafica troppo confusa
per poter attrarre interesse, onestamente, non lo installerei
nemmeno se fosse un "Freeware" sporcherebbe solo il registro

Played two minutes and deleted, just plain bad game, boring, music is repetitive, game stalls while playing. This is the worse Alawar game. Sorry to say, I love Alawar games, but this one is just horrible. Even a child would be bored after 5 minutes. Thanks anyway GTOD, and Alawar.

This is a repeat from April. A smallish 8 point something Megabytes file that should be manageable by those on dial up.

Check out Game Seekers comments #26 and Swans comments #20 from the previous time this was given away:

http://game.giveawayoftheday.com/el-airplane/#comments

I’ve just got Unreal tournament 2007 , so am keen to do some initial playing of that game while I can today, so I’m relying upon my original review, rather than rewriting a new one.

I’ve added a few additional scraps of info to the reviews that Swan and Game Seeker gave. There are quite a lot of different weapons that can be picked up along the way in this game.

Alawar listed first and second level weapons as well as the bonuses you can collect. It’s odd that the information wasn’t included in a help file via the GUI, however if you go into the games folder you can find a HTML Help file which covers the basics. This is also available when you first install the game provided you left the selection box ticked.

First level weapons:

Puny Bullets. Simple and weak weapon. Some say it can kill, too.

Fish. Fly out in clusters, but don’t all get to their destination point.

Birdies. Fly out in different directions.

Darts. Poison your opponent, when stuck in the body.

Boomerang. Has a nasty habit of coming back to a person who threw it.

Flamethrower. Do you want to feel like an arsonist? With this thing, you can.

Soap Bubbles. Fly up in the air, carrying death and destruction.

Second level weapons:

Torpedo. Aims and guides itself to strike a target.

Crazy Boot. May bounce off several times when on its way to target.

Anvil. Breaks throw everything and then sticks in the ground.

Napalm Light Bulbs. Fall down, break open and burn everything out with Napalm.

Piano. When this baby explodes, everything on the screen dies.

Killer Boot. It just kills, don’t all boots do?

Classic Bomb. Yeah, it’s boring. It just explodes and hurts enemies with its fragments.

Bonuses:

Heart. Gives you a chance to live a little longer.

Jaws. Fly around and help you get rid of your opponents.

I wasn’t too sure about the jaw bonus. Initially I thought they were trying to get me (I didn’t actually notice that they were orbiting my plane) so I kept trying to avoid them until checking out the information from the Alawar site. They are reminiscent of the jaws in the breakout game arcamania2.

Apparently there is an earlier version of this game that one reviewer on the Alawar site said was much better. (v1.1 as opposed to this version which should be v1.5) However I found a copy and couldn’t find any difference, lol. Also it does say that a joy stick is supported, so I assume that if you’ve got a joy stick configured for the computer, it should work, even though it’s not mentioned in the options menu.

There is a trainer that also gives you unlimited life and ammunition for the second weapon, but I wouldn’t risk going to the sites that offer it, as apart from one, MacAfee’s site advisor gave them a red X, which when I visited the address, filled my screen with pop ups. (I must turn the pop up blocker back on). Those cheats may be useful for the youngest of children, however I won’t post the link due the possible risks. If you really want them, just Google El Airplane. There are lots of links to search, but you do so at your own risk.

Personally I think this game is a great trainer for improving younger children’s mouse skills as well as being funny; and in my opinion is worth at least 7 out of 10 although judging from some of the previous comments your going to love it or hate it. This game will definitely be a keeper on my children’s computers. Thank you for the unusual shooter Alawar and the GGAotD team, …… every day is a pleasure to visit. Thanks also to Swan for her useful review (and to Game Seeker, for is often very useful reviews. Come back man all is forgiven, lol

Follow the link to see some googled in game screen captures:

For those who hate the short music loops, you could find a more suitable sound from your own music collection; convert them to .ogg using an audio converter. (There are some available from the Giveaway freeware library) then rename them to Music01 to Music07. You’ll find the files by following the path:

Not sure how long I'll play this one, but it's a not bad side scroller-shooter. Anyone else think "Monty Python"? The graphics remind me a lot of the cartoon shorts from there.

The only problem I had is the screen would minimize to the desktop upon opening UNTIL I gave it access to the internet via Zone Alarm. What was really interesting is Zone Alarm wasn't asking for permission as it usually does. Wasssup with THAT? (Is anyone else noticing the program trying to phone home?)

Not very good. Its simplistic gameplay is not interesting, and losing all upgrades between levels/when dying is a detractor for me. It's hard to know if the scenery is just a backdrop or actually part of the game, causing me to crash into the ground on several occasions. For good measure, the ship can reappear inside the scenery when that happens, spelling instant, multiple death.

Kudos to the developers for wacky enemies though, you are right to include those in the sales pitch. Saying your ammunition isn't bullets is however a bit... wrong. As that is your starting gun I mean. Another note, bosses could definitely be more unique.

This game is worth 10 minutes of your time, but not 10 dollars. Thumbs down.

Installed and registered just fine
the graphics are okay for this type of game

however....

Gameplay is awkward with only keyboard control

Add Mouse and or joystick control and this would be fun

with just keyboard control, I'm not at all interested in this package.

Thanks for the offer guys and gals...

I appreciate what you do here
