Airforce Missions

In Brief

Airforce Missions is a shoot em up game with excellent graphic though maybe a little dated no as it is around a decade old.

Suggestions:
If you like or don't like today's game please give some feedback detailing why you like or don't like the game; for example, how it could be improved from your point of view. If you don't like this genre at all, please explain why, especially if you give it a thumbs down. There are still thousands of subscribers to the game giveaway of the day every weekend which makes this an ideal forum for giving developers ideas as to what their consumers (i.e. you) would like to see in a game. For example, you could suggest extra content such as mini games, or a level editor that you would like to see or improved graphics, changing the menu system, adding camera controls or some other aspect of the game that would make it more appealing to you. Giving such feedback instead of saying nothing or just saying this game is rubbish may bring more developers to the site, which could mean more and better games. Would you give away thousands of copies of a game away to a community that complains all the time instead of giving useful feedback? It only takes a few moments of your time. This site could be transformed if only the community would be more forthcoming in their opinions of the games they are getting for free.

If you miss today's game giveaway you can still get the game free via MyPlayCity HERE, though you will get the checkboxes appearing unlike todays giveaway. Those have been removed for todays giveaway.

Installation:
The game downloads as a 31.2 MB zip file that unpacks to a setup, setup.gcd (security wrapper) and read-me and installs to the following path by default unless you chose to install to a different path from the main installation. Those with multiple hard drives are able to save games on any drive they wish:

C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPlayCity.com\Air Force Missions

Four shortcuts are installed to the desktop, three of which i.e. The link to MyPlayCity Games, Play Online Games and the Free to Play shortcut for Klondike Online can be safely deleted. The game uses 57 MB of hard drive space not counting save data.

If you have a problem installing or activating or getting 'Airforce Missions' to work please visit the problems section, which I've now incorporated into the FAQ's thread, and which you can find HERE.

overview 1
The Game:
You get to pilot a heavy battle helicopter equipped with up to date (as of 10 years ago) weapons and special devices. Your primary mission is to destroy terrorists' secret bases and small arms factories located all over the world. There are two basic goals, firstly to stay alive and secondly to eliminate as many enemies as possible to earn the highest score possible. During the course of the game, you will be given upgrades for your weapons and missiles, as well as numerous power-ups. For some dead enemies you will be awarded stars, which raise your rank when you collect them. You must pass over them to collect, otherwise they will disappear as you progress through the level. You don't need to hit everything, but this will affect the speed at which you are raised in rank and also affect your score. The game can be played as single player or in local coop with a friend.

You can see the types of weapons available to you by checking the main menu and selecting information. There are 8 pages giving you an overview of the game as well as lists of the various guns (machine guns, impulse guns plasma cannon, lightning gun, quantum gun, wave gun, big laser, missile gun and flame thrower), missiles (small and big missiles, small and big heat seeking missiles, M.A.D. missiles) and other useful items (annhiliator, nuclear bomb, rocket strike, lightning bomb, satellite strike, air support) available to you in game. There is also a missions list which you can see when you start the game. All but the tutorial and the first mission are locked. To progress you must complete a mission to unlock the next one. There are 18 missions in total with names like Riot Call (mission 2), Lost Paridise (mission 3), Gold Isle (mission 7), Treasures of the Ancients (mission 13), Burning Wasteland (mission 15), and the last mission Judgement Day (mission 18) level.

items
If you've never played a shoot em up before, or rarely played i'd play through mission 1 first which is the tutorial, otherwise you can jump straight into the game by selecting the second mission Riot Call. If you select the initial tutorial you'll learn how to manage the vehicle which is fully equipped with modern weapons that don't give your enemies a chance! First you get an amazing Green Viper helicopter to accomplish minor missions - in fact it looks like your general is checking you for bravery and recklessness. The mission is simple - destroy the enemies that appear in aircrafts, submarines, various ground vehicles and arrangements. They all can damage your armor so take care and be flexible while flying. You are available to gain some additional weapons to enhance the shooting abilities - machine guns, missiles of 5 types (which are extremely helpful you know), even a nuclear bomb, and other mass destruction devices. To switch from one type of weapon to another press X or Z key and to shoot a missile press Shift button. All the instructions are given in the tutorial mission - so don't miss a chance to learn more about the weapons so that to fight more efficiently. Later there will be more complicated tasks and more gladdening toys for a daredevil pilot like you - lightning guns, a plasma cannon, a wave gun, a flamethrower and what not! Who's the coolest guy in the armed forces - you are! Air Force Missions will astonish you with the great choice of abilities for the pilot - let alone further possible modes of the helicopter - they are just gorgeous! Air Force Missions is a real military crusade that will take your breath completely with its graphics and extraordinary designed battlefields! Increase your military rank and show your skill - be always the first to shoot!

Conclusion:

If you like Shoot em Up's (shmup's) this is a classic. It's a little dated by todays standards, but it still delvers where it counts. Your helicopter is fully equiped with devastating weapons. all you need to do is avoid the incoming fire to survive each mission. As you progress they become harder and harder until Judgment day will seem like hell. I highly recommend this excellent decade old shmup. I played it bqck then and was amazed. I've since played better, but for free, you really cannot complain.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank MyPlayCity for giving Airforce Missions minus the checkboxes, and also to the game giveaway team, as always, for providing a safe environment to download free games.

Useful Information:

The problems section that used to be posted here in the Game review is now included in the Game Discussion FAQ's thread; which you can find HERE.

I've updated the games section that used to be posted with the review. The thread is now called 'Weekly round up of game deals', formerly the games section of the weekly reviews. You can find the new thread (which I've posted in the sticky section of the game discussion forums to make it easier to find if you are perusing the game discussion forums) HERE.

The latest free game over on Origin is still Nox. Nox is an action role-playing game developed by Westwood Studios and published by Electronic Arts in 2000 for Microsoft Windows. It details the story of Jack, a young man from Earth who is pulled into a high fantasy parallel universe and has to defeat the evil sorceress Hecubah and her army of Necromancers to return home. Depending on the player's choice of character class at the beginning of the game (warrior, conjurer, or wizard), the game follows three largely different linear story lines, each leading to its unique ending. If you've ever played the early RPG's such as Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale or the early Fallout series and liked them, you'll probably like this game as well. It's 16 year sold now, but still looks pretty good for it's age. This type of game has held it's appeal and looks far more than the early first person games. I highly recommend it..

You can get it HERE. Please note that you do require the Origin game platform to be able to download and install the game.

If you are having problems installing the game check the thread I've linked to above. If you can't find any fixes check the comments made by the community below and over the last few weeks for suggestions. Thank you.

If today's game wasn't to your liking, you may find other games either free or for less than the price of a cup of coffee (from your favorite coffee house) via the 'Weekly Roundup of Game Deals' thread which I've posted a link to above, or HERE. Falamid has another dlc for another free to play game available at this time called Fiesta Online: Extension Park. You'll find that deal HERE.

I've also posted a thread over in the forums dedicated to Shoot Em Ups, called 'Space Shoot ‘Em ups or Shmup’s: A longish list of FREE games' though dedicated to space oriented games if you like shoot em ups generally you're bound to find others to your liking. The thread hasn't been updated in a long time, so there will be others now available. Space Shmups have seen a resurgence of late, with many new releases over the last couple of years. You can find the Shmup's thread HERE. Some of the the links may no longer be valid, but you can easily find those games by Googling them.

There are loads of online game sites where you can find Shoot em ups, for example HERE and HERE. You can also find details and videos popular shmups HERE. You will probably require the latest or a recent version of Adobe Flash to play the online games I've linked to. I've checked out several and both sites I've linked to appear safe to visit. Both sites do have advertising on their pages, but you can change the browser to play the games in full screen if you wish.

Not a bad game, but:
1. If you are trying to sell a game, it's a really cheap trick trying to run a paid advertisement every time it loads.
2. This is almost exactly the same as free games on GameTop. Clearly the same builder, template, and even intro were used. In fact, the exact same game might be there. It's underhanded to sell a game made freely available. If GameTop owns this game, then it's plain old illegal.

.........................Moderator Comment.............................

Gametop do not own this game. As with most games given away freely by Gametop,
MPC and others, the game belongs to another developer. Who is paid for every download of this game. Gametop have always been a distributor of these free games, MPC have also developed their own games as well. Each free games distributor has slightly different methods, all of which are used to gain more income. MPC have been using this tactic for a while. So long as you don't click on the free to Play game everything shold be fine.

Wanted this game (Air Force Missions) for awhile now, and finally got it! Played it some, and like the look of it, but the controls on the keyboard bother me a bit, tried to get a game controller to work with it, but haven't been able to do so yet, will try again later.

On myplaycity.com ALL!!! Games are free. No way to pay $9.99...

.........................Moderator Comment.............................

Actually, the game used to cost $19.99, but in 2008 prices of arcade games crashed as the mini depressioj set in. Sites like Big Fish Games helped to push the price of these games down. It was at this point more of these free sites appeared. The games are not technically free. you'll find virtually every game given away at MPC, Gametop, FreeGamePick and TooMky games are sold elsewhere. The developers of these games earn cash everytime you play the game via your browser being directed. In fact it almost certainly pays for a developer to allow their games onto one of these sites after the initial rush on sales, as it then generates a steady income for the developer and the free game site. Everytime you play the game money is earned, so, if the game is popular potentially a developer can earn much more allowing the game to be given away via one of those sites that have it languish on a distribution site.

Rickey Henderson, unless the free offers are ever repealed. Everything has a base price, though this was probably the initial price they set way back when, and they likely wouldn't expect that now. But hope that someone will buy one of your games always springs eternal, so to speak, though this one's days of being anything other than a free game to attract you to other games from that developer, (if they even exist any more) have probably long since passed. But, once upon a time, it did have a price. Practically everything does, at least initially.

Wait a minute. . . . . Wasn't there some sort of 'Aqua' game posted a little earlier? Something like a bubble themed breakout type of game? I figured I'd download it later and now there's a whole different game posted!

This is the very same game I remember playing probably 10 years ago, only with supposedly improved graphics. However, the new graphics are not good and they're even limiting the game play. The objects are too big in a small area of access, and sometimes it is hard to see and dodge what is coming, so you just randomly press buttons. Also, you can't go the left and and right edges of the screen to shoot down the enemies coming from there.

.........................Moderator Comment.............................

Hi Karem, yes, I remeber the game to. They also released a second version plus other titles that were based on the same idea. Back then the game was way ahead of it's time with respect to visuals, and I think it's still looks good today despite its age. I think I downloaded it via Gametop back then. It was one of the first games I ever downloaded from a free site; though, as I've mentioned several times over the last couple of years, games from sites such as Gametop, MyPlayCity (MPC) and others are not actually free, but commercial games that the developers get paid for allowing these sites to give them away, be it at a price to the downloader. i.e. your browser is always opened to the download site because so that the site earns cash every time you visit. A pecentage of this is given to the developer of the game, so, if you play the game regularily, you are earning the site and the developer money every time you play the game. Also, if you have allowed the toolbars and other items to be installed (e.g. your browser home page being changed or the search engine provider), they earn even more cash for the site and developer. Of course there are always hacks or other ways around all of these, even the browser opening; however, if you do stop your browser from opening (by removing something/or creating a shortcut from one of the files in the games installed folder - I can't remeber which as I've never done it myself) you are basically breaking the agreement you made when you installed the game and therefore technically you have stolen the game. These sites rely on your visits to earn the cash to continue. If everyone started to use the hacks/ fixes that allow you to play the game unhindered, then those sites would soon disappear. I have noticed that MPC have now added an advert for a free to play game (which actually tend to be pay to win) at the beginning of the game while it is booting up. Thankfully, so long as you don't click on it, it's totally innocuous. :) Please excuse the waffle. I always feel I need to make the above clear about these free game sites ( the above was not directed to you) but at the commi=unity, epecially those community members think the games are totally free and do use those fixes.

Reply   |   Comment by kerem  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

kerem, If you move forward a bit, you can swing wider to the sides and shoot all of the targets. The objects look the right size to me. I like this game, because I can win. I just hold the gun button and tap the rockets or special weapons buttons when needed. You can hold all the buttons for rapid fire, handy against the bosses. My only complaint is sometimes the stars slide off the side of the screen before you can catch them, making it virtually impossible to get a perfect score. I got the game direct from MPC and it's the only shooter I have or play repeatedly. btw, that 23-second teaser at the start of all MPC games isn't loading the game as it says, it's just there to catch itchy fingers eager to click on something. The only diff between games direct from MPC and the GOTD version is you don't have to click the box and make the kitty cry before you click Play, the rest is the same.
