Action Ball Deluxe
In Brief
Action Ball is one of my all time favourite 3D breakouts. It's a little dated graphically by todays standards, but still looks decent. At the time of it's release via Alawar it was way ahead of most other breakouts both visually and game play wise (IMO).
The Game
Amazingly, Action Ball has never been given away before; whereas, it's sequel, Action Ball 2 has been (August 12, 2012!). Action Ball Deluxe; tagged Deluxe because the original expansion was added to the base game after about a year of selling them separately. I bought this shortly after it was released via Alawar, over 15 years ago; of the two, I still prefer the first one, though the second has some innovative additions (you can also pick up the second one on Steam or free from MPC now). I count it in my top 20 favourite breakouts and one of the best 3D breakouts available (despite its age). It may be 'a little' dated graphically, but it still looks excellent and plays brilliantly.

3D breakouts tend to be really easy to beat; Actionball is one of the rare 3D versions that is an exception as it can be quite hard at times; (another one is the exceptional Incrediball: the Seven Sapphire's). There are some interesting additions to the game as well, such as different robots that frequently roam the arena. These either repair damaged blocks, add new blocks or attack your bat (see image below with descriptions). When you destroy a specific number of robots the game awards you a new life, you can also earn lives via a particular power up with a heart icon. You can stack as many of these as you wish; and will almost certainly need them when you come up against the boss robots. You can see a counter along the top of the arena, indicating how many you've destroyed - it counts backwards. When reset you need to destroy 15 robots to earn another life.

There are a plethora of power ups ranging from the usual speed ups and slow down, bat size changes as well as guns and rocket. There are also others such as the crazy/drunk ball, flame thrower, barrier (stops you losing balls), transporter (that moves your ball to a different area, but keeps it's direction of travel), wink ball (that goes invisible and reappears constantly, as well as a totally invisible ball (that you really need to avoid picking up) and a bouncing ball (where your ball is attached to the bat through a wire). When you get down to the last few difficult to hit bricks a power up drops (with a downward pointing arrow) that enables you to complete the level without destroying those last bricks (so long as you allow it to hit your bat)

There are a total of 206 levels to beat. 100 original levels and 106 deluxe levels; plus, you can play through three different difficulty levels. The highest difficult has faster moving balls. Every fifth level includes a boss level where a giant robot try's to destroy you. The first one is relatively easy to beat, but they get successively harder as you progress because they not only send rockets and bombs down on you, they will sometimes dart to the base of the arena to kill you. Sometimes you get two boss robots, which are the hardest to win. The only negative I found with this game was that to save your progress you had/have to complete ten levels to unlock the next set of ten. If you leave the game at level 9 when you return it will have reset to level 1. As I was addicted to this and other breakouts at the time it wasn't an issue as I'd often play twenty or so levels at a time.
When you leave the game always click on the 'save and exit' button otherwise you will still lose your progress. The score board always keeps scores from the end of each session. So you may find your score board
filling up rapidly if you play a few levels at a time.

If, like me you love breakout games check my review of Action Ball 2 over on Steam. At the end of the review I've listed some excellent free breakouts, including another of my all time favourite breakouts that is now free directly from the developer called Breakquest.

Whiterabbit-uk,

p.s.
I asked the developer of the breakout game Action Ball 2 if he would consider releasing the original, which we are getting free today; and, which despite it's age, and is, in my opinion, better than many of the breakouts that have been released since.

On Christmas Eve the developer posted a survey saying that if he got 100 hits (likes) he would release it to Steam. I would ask, if you would go over to the survey via the following link:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/1186340/eventcomments/2995422276373623903?snr=2_9_100003_

and like it. I've played this game on and off since I bought it from Alawar over 15 years ago. It still looks great and well worth releasing on Steam. You do need to be signed into your Steam account to be able to click the like button? Still, I would really appreciate anyone who has a Steam account and likes breakout games to like it. Thank you in advance to anyone who does so. :)

The likes have gone up from 21 to 34 since I posted this, thank you to everyone who has liked the developers idea so far. :)

By mid evening the likes have risen to 51. Looking good.

Alternatively, you can access the survey directly from the Steam client by going to the Action Ball 2 store page, then click on the View Discussions or Read Related News links that are located on the right side panel, lower down the page, (just below the Steam achievement section). Then click on the News link along the top of the discussions page. You should then see the survey window. Click on it then rate it up (please).

Whiterabbit-uk,
That's what I did, it must be something with my Steam account which I am not using often.

Anu,

Thanks Anu, appreciated that you tried. :) Hopefully it will make the required 100 eventually. I'm going to repost the details once a week on my Steam activities feed, so hope it will get there over the coming months. It's definitely a lot better than most of the breakouts you find on Steam; though there are some excellent ones such as Caromble!, POW Ball Renaissance, Anoix, Ionball 2 & 3 and Shatter

Does NOT work on Windows XP, despite the "System Requirements" stating it does. Common problem with Toomky Games giveaways...

Downloaded, Installed and activated with no problems on my Win10x64 machine.

Fine game and happy to get it. I've only played the first level so far but I'll be keeping this. Nice options and nice graphics for a game of this type. I can't seem to resize it no matter how many times I click on any of the 3 sizes offered. It goes to full screen by itself. Minor quibble I know but worth mentioning I suppose.

Sorry Whiterabbit, can't upvote you because I don't do Steam. I truly hope you get the likes needed though.

In case it helps anyone, when run Action Ball Deluxe adds a folder: C:\Users\ [UserName]\ AppData\ Roam\ ActionBall with an actionball.ini file in it. Double clicking that file opens it in Notepad for editing -- settings include RESOLUTION= 1 [640 x 480], 2 [800 x 600], or 3 [1024 x 768]. Also, one setting is for FULLSCREEN=1 [at default], and another VSYNC=1.

In a situation like: "Fatal error 640x480 not supported. Lowest resolution my computer goes to is 800x600.", editing [or if needed, creating] actionball.ini, and setting the resolution to 2 or 3 might allow the game to work. Turning off VSYNC [probably by changing 1 to 0] *might* help if/when someone has display issues -- something to try anyway.

Pete posted that: "it resizes your desktop... and with Windows 10, creates the problem of resizing all apps." FWIW, I VERY rarely see that if I run the Compatibility Troubleshooter before running any of these older games. Maybe oddly, in my Win7 32-bit VM, that troubleshooter suggested WinXP SP2 compatibility, and with that set Action Ball Deluxe would not run. In my Win10 64-bit VM the troubleshooter suggested Win7 compatibility, and with that set, it ran fine.

YESSSS! I've never played this but I'm really looking forward to it, despite the um, psychedelic colours!

Thanks to the developers and publishers of today's GGOTD: MANY thanks!

Downloading now, should work great on my ~10–15 year old laptop!

Installed and runs okay. Graphics are fine for a casual game.

Unfortunately, it doesn't have a "windowed" option OR an actual "full-screen" option - it resizes your desktop and then opens a window. This looks extremely messing on a 1080 screen and with Windows 10, creates the problem of resizing all apps.

Game play is odd. The "bat" doesn't seem to play nicely with a touchpad and has a strange "feature" where that paddle keeps drifting over towards the right-hand side of the game's window - I have no idea if that's intentional or not but a combination of the poor response to the touchpad and that uncontrollable wandering of the paddle, this is not really playable - I feel like I'm fighting against the game rather than enjoying it. (Minor and maybe slightly specific problem - this game names a lot of its files with a ".set" suffix - which causes a conflict with the hugely popular Cakewalk DAW app)

Not working. Fatal error 640x480 not supported. Lowest resolution my computer goes to is 800x600.

Reply   |   Comment by tanglefoots  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Weird, now started working. In settings there are options for 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768 but none of them seem to do anything.

To get it to work needed to right click on the icon in the task bar and select close window. After then clicking OK to the Fatal error: Can't execute actionball.exe it box that pops up it then launced OK. Using task manager to kill the process didn't clear the error.

tanglefoots,

Hi tanglefoot,

I had no issues running the game from the outset, no crashes and no error messages. I installed the MPC version first to make sure it worked, then I reinstalled my original copy I purchased from Alawar. You can see from my screen captures that the game supports 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768. Bearing in mind this game was released around 15 years ago when the average home monitor only supported up to 1024x760. It looks fine playing on my 25'' BenQ gaming monitor, especially considering most arcade games from 15 years ago look quite pixilated.

I'm glad that you managed to get it working in the end.

I'm hoping if the developer gets 100 likes on the Steam survey he posted . He did say he would be releasing a special version, so I'm hoping that includes a graphic upgrade, but even if he doesn't, it still looks decent.

When he released Action Ball 2 onto Steam I think he added some new features that were not included in the original game?

With a dual monitor, the game messes up the other monitor

Reply   |   Comment by EDDIE  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

EDDIE,

Hi Eddie,

I run a dual monitor set up and had no issues with my desktop icons getting messed up. I've been playing the MyPlayCity version as well as my original copy from Alawar, and neither cause any issues whatsoever.

Whiterabbit-uk,
I mean with other programs on the second monitor,
like bing, it stretches the size of the program window .
