A HOG with a few differences: the entire scene is the "hidden object" area, meaning that items can be literally anywhere. It also means that you'll keep clicking items you "don't need yet" or similar. On the plus side, the Inventory is more of a checklist (e.g. 1/5) to tell you how many of an item you still need to find; and hovering over any item (found or not) will show you where it needs to be used, which is a nice touch.
The hint system is of the "collect five bright blue petals for a hint" type. You can kind of milk the game for these because moving from one place to another will usually spawn a new petal; and it looks like each scene/location has a limited number of places where petals can spawn. It's therefore easy to gain hints when you're totally stuck, as I frequently was!
The minigames range from fairly easy to fiendishly difficult (IMHO), but if you think "gee, I'd like to play that one again"," then you're covered, because this is the Collector's Edition of the game, so you can play or replay any minigame, any time. Oh, and you click the red icon at the right of the main screen to access the CE content.
Moving from main location to location is visually seamless, an impressive trick. And some of the items you need to find are diabolically well hidden and merge beautifully into the scenery. Remember I said you'd need frequent hints?!
If you like HOGs, but yearn for a more Sierra or Lucasarts type point-and-click experience, you'll enjoy this one. Don't let the cute artwork fool you: this is MUCH more challenging than it looks!
Thanks to Far Mills, Alawar, and of course the GGOTD team for bringing us this little gem!
