Youda Legend The Golden Bird of Paradise:

Youda Legend The Golden Bird of Paradise downloads to a 156 MB zip file that unpacks to a read me and a wrapped setup file (the orange colored file with the key symbol), plus there’s a setup file with security (setup.gcd) that’s protected from being hacked (because the previous giveaway system was easily cracked). This file may case some security software to alert the user to a possible malware attack, but it will be a false positive.

The game giveaway team check all game giveaways for malware using several well known anti -malware suites. There has never been a game giveaway infected with malware since the project started back in Dec 2006. (The owners know that allowing such things would compromise their buisness, so they make sure all software given away via the giveaway and gamegiveaway sites are throughly checked for all types of malware before allowing community members to download any files.

Some community members have been having problems installing games since the security software was added. It’s been found that turning off your security temporarily or configuring it to accept the setup.cgd file usually sorts the problem out.

To register and install the game click on the orange colored icon. The installed game is 150 MB in size. and installs to the following path by default:

The path can be changed to suit whatever your wishes are. Once the game is installed you can delete the giveaway setup files. You will need to create your own shortcut because there is no shortcut installed to the desktop or in the programs list during installation. Also there’s no uninstaller. To delete the game just delete the installed folder.

I’ve tested the game on a Win 7 and Win 8 systems and it works on both. I don’t have a Vista or XP installation set up at the moment (and won’t for several months until we move house later this year).

    The Game:
From the options menu you can change the volume, screen brightness, language, and screen display mode (full screen or windowed). You can also access Options anytime from within the game by clicking on the Menu button.

Playing Youda Legend: The Golden Bird of Paradise, the second game in the Youda Legend series, is like driving a Chevy Malibu: It’s competently built, reasonably reliable and comes with all the usual hidden object game options. But if you’re looking for anything more than that, like soft Corinthian leather or any sense of style and excitement, you’re in for a disappointment.

The Golden Bird of Paradise opens with the player embarking on a vacation to recover from the stresses endured in the previous Youda Legend game, The Curse of the Amsterdam Diamond. But the much-needed R&R is quickly sidetracked when a visit to a fortune teller sparks a journey that will lead to remote tropical islands, through ancient temples and eventually the discovery of a long-lost tribal civilization. It sounds impressive, but don’t expect an overly coherent tale to be told; the tale of the Golden Bird is little more than a rickety framework upon which to hang a series of hidden object searches and other mini-games.

For the most part, The Golden Bird of Paradise sticks with the tried-and-true hidden object formula, opting for the comfort of familiarity over the risk of innovation. For players unfamiliar with the genre, the game introduces its conventions in the first level with a simple but thorough tutorial on the various aspects of the game. A generous hint system, meanwhile, helps ensure that players won’t spend too much time stuck on searches for obstinately elusive objects.

      scrn goldenbird021

Players must search for random items hidden throughout levels ranging from airports and beach houses to jungles and crumbling ruins. Most are of the find-and-forget variety, but a few, like map pieces and tools, will automatically be stored in the player’s inventory for use later in the game. Also waiting to be found are “gems” that will add to the player’s score, although oddly, the game says nothing about how many there are in each level.

In a half-hearted stab at variety, every now and then an extra action will be required to progress through the game, such as screwing a light bulb into a lamp to reveal another object. Some items in the inventory will also occasionally have to be “prepared” before they can be used, a process which usually involves dragging one object to another in order to combine them.

      scrn goldenbird031

The visual quality of the levels and animated interludes are solid, although the insertion of cartoonish, hand-drawn characters on top of the photo-realistic backgrounds can be jarring. Fortunately, it’s a relatively rare occurrence, with minimal impact on gameplay. The music, meanwhile, is the sort of pulsating, urgent beat that floats in the background of so many hidden object games, serviceable but unremarkable.

The game does suffer from a few minor flaws, including a couple of spelling errors and the tendency of the inventory screen to pop up unintentionally when the pointer is moved too close to the bottom of the screen. One of the levels is surprisingly dark, which may fit its tomb-like underground setting but is hardly conducive to gameplay, and the Golden Bird of Paradise can occasionally be a bit vague about what it wants, such as when it asks the player to find “blackbird pieces” but gives no indication as to what they actually are. (For the record, they’re blobbish-looking pieces of colored glass.)

      scrn goldenbird041

The real problem, however, is the difficulty. Some of the hidden objects are simply too small, dark and/or nondescript to be found unassisted and more than once I had trouble nailing them down even after the game’s hint system had pointed them out to me. They’re not cleverly hidden, they’re just incredibly difficult to see. It’s a fine line, yes, but at times it feels like the game is cheating, or at the very least playing dirty, which can lead to some very frustrating moments.

Youda Legend: The Golden Bird of Paradise isn’t really a bad game, but neither is it a particularly good one. Some of the between-level puzzles are respectable brain-teasers, but others are just filler and a few are downright tedious. The object searches, meanwhile, are decidedly average and feel not so much challenging as simply hard to finish. And with only about three hours of playtime, there’s not enough quantity to make up for the unimpressive quality. Like the aforementioned Chevy, there’s nothing specifically wrong with The Golden Bird of Paradise, but you could do a lot better elsewhere.

The music is in the form of a shockwave flash object. I’m not sure how you edit this, or whether you’d have top create another flash object named the same as the msic object i.e. asset_music and possibly asset_ambience; (these are the largest files within the games folder).

    Video & Images:

You can see a slideshow of images from the game HERE. There will be some spoilers so if you don’t wish to see them just increase the rate at which the images change via the slider that’s provided, that way you won’t have time to take things in too much (unless you are a speed reader) 😉

You can see several video’s of Youda Legend The Golden Bird of Paradise via the following videos (spoiler alert) HERE, HERE, rel=”nofollow”>” rel=”nofollow”>HERE (egg puzzle solution), HERE, HERE, HERE (wooden logs puzzle solution), HERE and HERE

    System RAM: 512 MB

    DirectX Version: 8.0 or higher
    Disk space: 165 MB

Youda Legend The Golden Bird of Paradise is one of the better Hidden Object games IMO, with a decent trutorial levelthat introduces all the elements of a HOG to new players with a decent help system. It would have been nice if the developer had added more gameplay. Despite its good game play, it’s rather short and some of the mini games can be a bind to complete. You’ll also find the usual hard to find objects, either becasue the name is regionalized or they are just too small to find. I’m sure you’ll find a You ube video to help though as there are loads of walkthroughs. You’ll also find a decent cheats and strategy walkthrough HERE

    Overall I’d give this a 7 out of 10

If you are posting late in the day I would also suggest posting in the main giveaway forums, in the game discussion section because I cannot moderate 24hrs a day over the weekend. If you’ve installed the game but it won’t work for some reason, it should still be registered, so someone may be able to help at another time. Unfortunately if your problem is actually installing it then once the giveaway period is over there’s nothing that can be done until the game is given away again (though that isn’t guaranteed). Sometimes you can still register the game after the giveaway has ended so long as you managed to start the download before the giveaway ends. I’ve tested this and sometimes the grace period lasts for up to 2 hours, but more often than not 1 hour is the norm.

It’s always worth checking out the free game sites because sometimes the games we get here are also available for free from them. MyPlayCity has the most with over 600 games to choose from. You won’t find Youda Legend The Golden Bird of Paradise over at MyPlayCity (but you will find three other Youda games – Youda Fairy, Youda Camper and Youda Farmer)

    A Request for help:

Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average between 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of ‘potential’ cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away even more decent games.

Please leave some feedback once you’ve checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain what your reasons were for the feedback you post. You could also leave suggestions for improving the game, for example, this game could do with more block types for the levels editor, add more power-ups, describing the ones you think would be suitable, add some mini games (which seem all the rage in some arcade games now) or enable the user to be able to change the in game music easily.

Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to post a constructive comment.

  2. I love hidden object/puzzle games and look forward to playing this more. My installation was different than that of the moderator’s. The game merely extracted as a 150 MB game folder. The extractor remembered my last folder choice and allowed me to change it. Personally, this is my favorite way to receive a game. It can be freely moved, copied, etc. If you don’t like it, just delete the game folder. There’s no desktop icons or start menu items to worry about. Well done Youdagames. For me this is a keeper and I know my niece and nephew will enjoy it too. Thank you so much GGOTD team and of course Youdagames.
