I find it always freezes during the second level. I've never got to the end of it. My system is way above the system requirements.

Looks interesting, actually plays like crap. Germans have WAY too many tanks. Reload speed on the Shermans are WAY TOO FAST, like a shot every 2.5 seconds, and that's ridiculously fast. Not even a modern-day mechanical autoloader loads that fast, much less human beings. Your fellow tanks are indestructible unless a scripted event calls for them to be destroyed, so you pretty much have to hide behind them. The trick is to get the enemy to concentrate on him/them instead of on you. You can be damaged by machine gun fire, and if you shoot enemy tank long enough with MG it'll also blow up. HA! What a joke! It's an arcade game with a historical "setting". But that's like saying that Rambo is an accurate war movie. :P

I was finally able to download it, but it always hung on the Software key wrapper box so never installed even after trying it multiple times over a period of 7-8 hours. Hopefully this will me made available or at least it should have been extended considering all the outtages.

Sounds like a great game. had to dl twice. first file wouldn't extract. The second opened but I could not get the installer to get connected with your computer. I tried two different time periods Thursday but it said I either had a firewall problem or needed to try to connector later. It would be nice if I could activate the program. It sounds great by your description and the people who got it to work.

Started download with 4 1/2 hours left to activate. Seven hours and several corrupt files later I finally have the download. What good is that now that time is up to activate. Servers were totally overloaded and I only got 1/10 the thruput I normally get. It would have been nice to try it out.

I installed this very cool looking game, but it would not run on my machine, (2ghz processor, 1 meg memory, API VGA card). Next I installed in on another machine with no better results. Too bad, I really wanted to take this one around the block. Thanks for the offer. -gordon

I was one of the many who had to give up because the download kept freezing up, but I'm glad to see dozens of folks out there were able to download, and many of those were able to run the game. Thanks to all of you who commented on the game. It's helpful to see what others who actually used the game think of it.

One annoying thing I did notice is that if one takes a seriously alternate path to attack the panzas from behind my tank self-destructs as if blown up by some mega shell without any warning at all.

#148 you really need a decent dedicated download manager with these larger offerings, IE failed repeatedly as did Opera with its slightly more advanced download manager. GetRight managed fine and mostly kept my paltry 256K DSL line saturated for the duration despite the intermittent overloaded remaining web-server.

#140 sometimes like in this case the Activation is the server request for a decryption key that then unpacks the real installer from the encrypted wrapper file (G)GAOTD uses and there is no change made to the programs runtime data to Activate it. In these cases Activation procedure has to be in same exe as the programs installer. This has both bad and unmentioned good results for the end user with a little thought on the subject.

I was able to download and install this game on a machine that was XP Pro, and was upgraded to Vista.
I did have to go looking for the .exe icons, but they WERE in C:\Games\WWIITankCommander
This is a very capable machine with 2 GPUs in SLI, and the framerate is choppy even with the settings turned down.
Still, I say thanks for 3D FPS.

First time in a long time that I see a game that I'd like to download and haven't had any luck accessing the download site all day. Any chance at a download time extension for those of us that couldn't grab the file. I'm on cable and I still couldn't connect to the site.

Some of the players here are certain to be military minded (me), so I found some history links that helps add extra life and meaning to WWII TankCommander.

On July 5th, 1943 (same day as today's offer) the most decisive tank battle of the war was fought on Germany's eastern front with Russia. The links will give the details. Sorry for posting at the last minute, hopefully some will catch this.

I want to join the others and thank you for finally putting up a game with some meat on its bones.
I had pretty much given up on this site as being for young girls. As the statistics show, computer games' biggest demographic is young boys (of all ages).
Can you try to put up sports, racing, battlestars+cyborgs, and just skip the "My Pretty Pony" dwarves? You'll get far more 'hits' -- I guaranty.

To be honest, I expected this to work, but it doesn't. I have 512MB of memory, an Athlon Xp 2000+ and a Radeon 9200. I played Road to Hill 30 with average quality settings and I got a playable frame rate, but this one, despite having less graphics effects, can't be played on my video card. The worst part is that system requirements look nice, but...

At last, gameplay was disappointing. Nothing to do than move around and shoot enemy tanks that sit there like ducks...

P.S. No, I had no background program taking up all my CPU time or something like that, and I didn't try to run it at 1600X1200 resolution. I am not a noob at all...

For those wondering about a good download manager, I know of a couple of great ones. A superior paid one is ReGet and for FREE, the best one I have found is Free Download Manager. I have never had ReGet corrupt a file, ever, even when I had dial-up. To make it easier for those with dial-up, I think it would be a great idea to allow users to load the activation program first and then download the file, which they could install after the giveaway period had expired (providing that the user had already activated the software). Unfortunately, for some, there are no options other than dial-up. My parents have 2 options: dial-up or satellite. Dial-up is $9.95/month and satellite is $50/month. Which do you think they are using? This is the same for many others.

#16: BTW, I dunno why you say you "can't afford" DSL, AT&T DSL (which is most of the USA now) is only $15 a month for the lowest speed DSL, 768kbit which is still many times faster than dialup.

Most dialup plans tend to cost around $10 a month, unless you use a free dialup plan.

http://www.t1shopper.com/tools/calculate/downloadcalculator.shtml

Download calculator (you can google that phrase to turn up hits like that)

Says at 56k modem speed it would only take 16 hours. Use a download manager and you can do it within the time limit.
BTW, unlike the person who claimed "weeks" at 28.8k modem, it would only be 32 hours. Too long to take advantage of a once a day thing of this size, but it would NOT take weeks, or even a week.
On a 28.8k modem, the limit if you started when it came out at midnight would be around 250 megs, you could do that in a day. For 56k it would be about 500 megs in less than 24 hours.

Like most things Americans try to do, e.g. Vietnam, Iraq, it doesn't work. Why don't you stay home and mow your lawns .... until the oil runs out. The files on this site never work, it is to be expected from a nation that historically created the most efficient industrial complex on our planet (Ford) but who are unable to produce a single TV set today(U.S. TV's are all produced in China). Your empire is in decline. Consume your caesar salads produced in California for consumption in New Jersey, and think about what the f**k you are doing. Wake up!...At least you have Michael Moore.

for those of you with dial up...you could always goto a coffee shop or mcdonalds and use laptop to download it...then transfer to home pc ifyou wanted to....or talk to your neighbors and see if anyone would be willing to split a dsl or cable high speed internet bill with you and just hook up wirelss for you both..if its the money that is holding you back and not the stupid internet poeple not offering highspeed in your area...

I have attempted several times to download the installer. I am on cable internet and a file this size typically only takes a few minutes. Each download has taken MUCH longer than it should have and the archive has been corrupted. I'm trying again this once, then giving up... and giving up on GGAOTD as well.

For those who installed but can not find the game - If you changed nothing, it is in a folder on your main hard drive (usually C:\) named Games. Open folders until you get to the .exe's. There are four, one named tankWWII.exe, one named TankWWII64bit.exe and one tankWWIIsafemode.exe nad finally tankWWII64bitsm.exe (64 bit safe mode). The safe mode versions reset the game to lowest settings incase it stops working.

Right click on the 32 bit or 64 bit .exe appropriate for your system and select COPY. Go to where you want your shortcut and right click and select PASTE SHORTCUT. Rename it to Tank Commander. Click the new shortcut and play. It takes a little longer the first time you run it, as I think it has some setup to execute.

If you have a multiple monitor system you will have to temporarily disable all displays except the primary while you play or the game will continually crash.

This game looks really good. However I haven't been able to install it yet. Had a partial download which could not be installed or restarted. Then had a complete install only to have winzip choke on it indicating that the file was corrupt or damaged. I'm on my third try but unfortunately it has been stuck at 76MB for about 10 minutes so I think it also failed. I see some downloading problems but I am not on dialup, I'm on cable and hard wired to the modem but I'm still having issues downloading. Are there any plans to extend this one so we can try again tomorrow or another day? It clearly was a successful game made available here. Thanks GAOTD for all your hard work!

The program installed O.K. but I swear I can't find an icon anywhere and can't find the folder. I love Tank programs and was really looking forward to this one. The program also does not show-up in any of my uninstaller programs. Any advice is appreciated. Any idea how to uninstall once I do find it? This is really creepy. Up till now I have been a 100% GAOTD fan but now I'm getting really scared.

Also, after installing yesterday's Prevx 2.0 my IE takes 3-4 minutes to open, must be a setting I've missed. Firefox opens normal. Any ideas? I think my computer has been eating too many programs lately and needs to go on a diet. Anyone? Help???

Ray Vin comment #104
If you follow the following path you will find Tank commander. you will have to manually create a desk top short cut. The following instructions are not meant to be condescending. I’m just assuming you are new at computing in general:

C:\Games\WWII Tank Commander\tankWWII

1) Click on the Start button

2) Select the 'My Computer' icon and left click on it

3) This will open a window which shows you your drives plus other stuff. Left click on the 'C:\' drive icon

4) Look for the 'Games' file and left click on it

5) You will find all the Merscom games within this folder (assuming you've downloaded any of the previous giveaways) Click on the folder that is called ‘WWII Tank Commander'.

6) This will open up the folder. Inside you will find several files. Look for the one called 'tankWWII' RIGHT click on this file>

7) When right clicking a menu will open up. Scroll your mouse pointer down to 'Create Shortcut' and click on it.

8) By doing this you will create a shortcut, which can then be placed on the desk top by either dragging and dropping it onto the desk top, (assuming your opened windows are not maximised). You can reduce them in size by left clicking the mouse on the toggle switch between the - and X buttons to the top right of the window. If the window still looks maximized, place your mouse cursor on a corner. The pointer will change to a diagonal double sided arrow. Left click on the corner {any corner} and drag the corner inwards. Or you can right click on the shortcut and copy or cut it, then go to the desk top by clicking on – to minimise the window or X to close it. And right clicking anywhere on the desk top and select paste.

Another way to find the file would be to go to the Start menu and click on the search button. Select and then click on ‘all files and folders’ Type in 'tankWWII' without the ‘‘ and then click on 'Search'

Once the file has been found follow the steps from 6)

I hope this helps. :)
