War of Kings:

In Brief:
War of Kings (not the Falcon Studios version of War of Kings) is very similar to Portal Wars that we were given last week.

The game is a classic 2D "Tug of War" strategy game. You need to plan and send correct uncontrollable troops towards the enemies and hope they beat them. More commonly known as a Lane Defence game (with a heads up to Plants vs. Zombies).

You can see a video of game play HERE.

The Game:
War of Kings is a fairly basic lane defence game. There are no instructions included with the game; however, after a few trials, even those not familiar with this type of tower defence game should pick up on how to play it.

Basically, you have two opposing armies. The enemy randomly spawn at the right side of the lanes. You have to select which of your units to use. Each unit costs a number of potions which are earned by destroying the enemy or managing to exit at the enemies end of the lines. Some effects increase in price as you progress.

There are two types of potions blue and red. The red potions are used to create different attack units, initially these are the knight, that uses close combat, the monk that uses fireballs, the templar that has a stronger attack than the knight and is harder to kill and the thief that has a faster attack speed. Not all of these units are available when you first start the game, some are introduced in the second level, then in later levels more unit types are introduced (I've not been able to pass level two, so don't know what these are yet, there are at least two more.

Also included are magic attacks that use the blue potions, these initially include the fireball and explosion effects, as you progress more magic attacks are introduced such as the Illusion, that gives the appearance of a warrior and a slowdown effect; even later, more magic attacks are introduced, but, as with the units I have not progressed far enough to discover these yet, but there are at least two more. (You can see that there are more of both types via the last two images posted below).

I don't know how many levels there are, but this game does use the same mechanic as Portal Attack, so I'm guessing there will also be ten levels to this game. Unlike the usual tower defence game, there are no waves; instead, it's more of a tug of war like mechanic, that is reflected in the attack bar that is divided into two sections that are coloured green and red.

At the start of a level, these are equal in size. You win the level if you can fill the bar with your green colour, if the enemy kill more of your units and manage to have more escapees exiting the lanes from your start position, the bar becomes fully red and you lose the level and have to start again.

Conclusion:
Overall War of Kings is quite a challenging tower defence (TD) game, with a nice change of pace from the usual TD fare we've been getting (apart from Portal Wars). It took me ages to pass level one, partly because I was getting used to the various units and magic potions available, which on level one is limited and are quite weak compared to at least one of the enemies' flying units that had multiple ranged attacks that usually decimated any unit that happened to be in the same lane. That particular unit was almost impossible to kill unless you' built up a decent stash of blue potions so that you could send off multiple fireballs or explosions; however, as the cost of these increase a little it wasn't a strategy you could employ regularly, at least in the early stages of the game until you unlocked stronger units in later levels.

I found avoiding these attacks, especially in the next level which had three lanes to contend with compared to the first level that only had two lanes was a better strategy than trying to destroy this flying unit as my red and blue potions were better spent defending the other lanes. later levels include even more lanes. That said, as enemy units were randomly generated, these flying units could appear in any lane, which could make it difficult to choose where to place your units sometimes.

Overall, I recommend downloading War of Kings. I referenced Plants and Zombies in the 'In Brief section', but only because that is also a lane defence game; otherwise, this game bears no semblance to that particular game (which I may add is amongst my top favourite defence games; others include Bloons 5, Stronghold, Creeper World 3, Rock of Ages, Solar Division, Defence Grid, Revenge of the Titans, Towers of Altrac (a previous giveaway), Orcs Must Die and Sanctum 2. Each of the ones I've mention brings something original to the genre.
Notes on Security
I scanned a zipped copy of the installed game using Virus Total and it found zero hits from 63 antimalware engines. You can see the scan of the installed game HERE.

Thank you very much for taking the time to review these games during the week. Unfortunately I see too many repeats of certain games on here with specific themes, I've seen too many TD games offered on here in such a short time and also do understand that GOTD gets what they get and I am greatful to that but it's not my cup of tea unfortunately.

I'm still enjoying the Nancy Drew and Elles Cake Shop game that were given away on the weekend and also the Space Mahjong game we were given away not too long ago.
