Turtle Lu was available as a giveaway on July 1, 2012!

Today Giveaway of the Day
$5.00
free today
An arcade game combining a courier simulator and a space ship captain.

Day after day, Lu watched creepy little caterpillars crawl past his window. Like the pitter patter of birds on a tin roof, the squirming sensation of moles crawling under the floor. Lu lay down with the sunset every night, and awoke to the cock-a-doodle doo of the rooster outside every morning.

Lu curled up in his shell and fell into a long, deep sleep. Winter was as it always is, and soon the first rays of the sun broke through the dirty, cobwebbed window.

Opening his heavy eyes as he crept outside his house, he was in for a big surprise. The little caterpillars had grown into giant, dangerous Monsters! Huge, angry bees circled around his home, stingers ready to well, sting! Mad urchins darted from house to house, destroying everything in their paths with fearsome needles! "This outrage must be stopped!" Lu exclaimed as he set out on his perilous journey...

Thank you for the giveaway.

I played the first three levels, and this is what I found:

*What I Liked*
* Nice graphics
* Can use either up arrow or space to jump

*What I didn't Like*
* No tutorial -- I am familiar with these types of games, but someone who is unfamiliar with platform scrollers would have no idea how to move or what to do

* No indication which enemies can be jumped on & which can't.

* No way to 'look around' to see if there is a floor at the bottom of a hole, or a platform just above the top of the screen

* Only 5 health, with no way to regain it

* No save points during the level (a big issue with the three points above)

All in all, this one is a dud for me, and I will be deleting it. I find the game more frustrating than fun.

Nice for what it is. It's quite possible that some of the more popular turtle games cribbed off of this, or that TurtleLu cribbed off of them. You would normally expect the former, since this doesn't feature mouse support, so could be older. I'm spoiled, I like mouse support. But that makes this more challenging, though for me, maybe less interesting. Like I said, I'm spoiled. But considering games like Turtix and Turtle Odyssey and other platformers have different difficulty settings which encourages you to play through the levels multiple times, maybe this needs to have the flexibility so that potential players aren't turned off to soon. After all, isn't that the real trick of game design: luring prospective players in and then gradually increasing the challenge to keep them hooked?

I guess what I'm saying is that this would be more of a challenge for the old school, harder core gamer, especially considering the "camouflaged" enemies, but those folks are probably on to more modern games. The main reason I say this is that TurtleLu could probably be rescued from the freebie bin and go back to being a small money maker if the target was more toward the casual gamer and some of these amenities were put in. Like seperate volume sliders for the audio. Also, the music seems appropriately aggressive/arcadish but, for the casual gamer, something more mellow might be more appropriate. Like Turtix's oriental music, or some of the Caribbean flavored music Turtle Odyssey uses.

Bottom line: this isn't bad, but it might be worth giving it a face lift. After all, the graphics aren't radically different or inferior to it's competitors and maybe better in some ways. I'm voting thumbs up as a respect to the challenge of the game and because it has potential if it got some modern upgrades. After all, those who find mouse movement too easy could always switch back to keyboarding.

Ah yes - Super Cow! I enjoyed that game until Windows 7 insisted there was a bug in it, and it had to go to the great retirement home in the sky.

But back to Turtle Lu . . . This game installed very quickly and easily on my Windows 7, 64-bit laptop, and it seems to work just as it should do. No warnings of any kind, apart from the "This game may not have installed correctly" one. (How can you even say "Yes it did" or "No, you're right, it didn't" until you've played it?)

It's bright and breezy with colourful graphics, and music which I suspect will begin to annoy me before long, but that's easily fixed. I usually have my sound turned off anyway.

Very easy to control - the cursor keys seem to do all that's required, which is principally to move in a straight line or jump up. If there's a way to kill the hedgehogs I haven't found it yet, so I didn't last long on the first attempt.

It's not a game for intellectuals, but as a time-waster during a tea break it will pass a few minutes pleasantly enough, I think. I could see it becoming a favourite with the younger generation, for whom I suspect it is really intended.

Thanks to Fly Games and GGOTD for this really cute "Mario Clone" game. I am sure the kids are going to love this game when they are here this holiday. Maybe they can figure out how to kill/stop the hedgehog/porcupine. :)

Thanks Wabbit. Hope you get it squared away so you can play. It is fun>>> The graphics are pretty.

Got it, wasn't too impressed. Performance sucked on my computer (or maybe the game was just slow?), and I kept on bumping into caterpillars because of the extreme blending of the colors between the grass and the caterpillars. Just a note that this game is made in Game Maker, so no you can't really mod it.

BTW, Falcoware has a lot of freeware titles, and a whole bunch of games you won't find anywhere else. They've got most of Fly Games' catalog for free. One of their games, They Like Darkness, seems like it could be interesting. Be aware that even if you uncheck install Babylon toolbar from the installer, it will still try to install. Use Universal Extractor + innounp to dump out the files without activating Babylon.

Downloaded and installed fine on Win 7 x64. The game has great graphics and good sound though the music is a little retro but perfect for a game of this type. Its a lot like Mario is on the Nintendo. Its a perfect game for young kids and anyone who likes to play retro games. As with poster #40 I couldn't figure out how to kill. I did try jumping on top of some of them and it works for killing the caterpillars but not for the others that I have seen. I may have missed something though and will give it a try again later on today. Thanks for the great game!

Win 7 64 home, usual error stating the game may not have installed properly, just answer that it did install ok.

Do NOT like that when running in windowed mode, it does not change the resolution back to normal, even if I manually change it back, during game play it reverts.

A few other issues:
No instructions

Found no way to kill the hedgehog, jumping on them did not work.

The boundaries of the enemies extended beyond their physical depiction. I would be several steps away from the worms/caterpillars or hedgehogs (including the spikes) and be injured.

At times the controls are a bit sluggish.

Unable to find a way to save mid-level.

I think it shouldn't change the screen resolution, at least in the windowed mode. For me it goes back to normal after exiting, but I'd prefer to run it in optimal resolution for my LCD screen.

When I visited their website through the GOTD link, I received a Norton warning screen that the site contained malware and Norton has contacted fly-games to inform them. I use Norton Internet Security and have configured my router to use Norton's DNS settings (which gave me the warning). Game looks interesting but I'll pass when I get these warnings. Not worth it.

..........................Moderator comment..............

No game giveaway has ever had any malware. The site may have been attacked but it doesn't mean that the game we are getting has a virus. The giveaway team have had the file since at least February and have thoroughly checked the file for any malware using several different AV software's.

If the giveaway team started giving away software that was infected it would be the end of this project because no one would trust them any longer.

As I've said previously to another user, it's you prerogative, but I'd also say it's your loss. :)

Ok Win 7 x64 Ultimate. No sliders, just on/off for S&M. Full creen ok & windowed. Exiting full screen first time had use c-a-d. Colorful graphics. Can't seem to kill hedgehog and if die 5 times have to replay level. Seems standard w/ these Turtle games. If could kill hedgehog might be easier. Have to time jumping over them plus quick jump to next ledge. Didn't seem to find any exit method so ended up with a lower resolution screen until rebooted. Thanks for game, might struggle later or find some unknown kill keys. Thought turtle could shoot in other versions? Just jumping is a chore since can't bounce on critter to kill it. Oh well.

......................Moderator Comment.......................

Have you tried jumping on top of the hedgehog? Usually that's one way of killing in this type of game. ( may be wrong though as I've not been able to get my copy working.

Well, it works fine on my Win 7 x64 system. Also if you run it in windowed mode and exit from the game by using the exit command and not the close window bar, it resets my resolution back to what it was. My problem is that there do not appear to be any instructions with the game. Apparently there's no way to save the game in the middle of a level. Also I just finished level 3 and went back to the main screen and chose load and went to the beginning of level 2 and not level 3.

However, I do find this game to be interesting and worthwhile playing.

....................Moderator Comment....................

#20: "As usual, you stripped the setup.exe file from the program and replaced it with a damn .rar file. No place else on the web can you find this game with an rar extension!... It is also why you continually have problems running the program in Vista and Win 7. A rar file may have worked twenty years ago with XP, but, you really have to get off the addiction of destroying these games with archaic algorithms that do not work with advanced operating systems..."

If it helps at all, Steve, RAR is simply a method of file compression, like Zip, 7Zip, Cab files etc. It does not change the content of whatever file(s) are compressed, just like Zip etc. It does take special software to uncompress these files -- Windows just includes that special software for Zip files -- & that software to uncompress the file(s) can be bundled with, included along with the compressed file(s), e.g. the WinRAR self-extracting files GOTD sometimes uses. Google/Bing on rar & you'll see it's both quite current & popular.

If there's a difference between a GOTD version of a game & one downloaded from a gaming site, it's usually because the game site versions often have optional toolbar installers etc., & along with site branding they're built right into the installer routines [packaging]. On the downside with GOTD RAR packaged games, you don't get shortcuts set up for you, & you don't get an uninstall entry in Windows. On the plus side [I think outweighing the negatives] you don't get the extra garbage installed -- most of the games I've monitored from game sites actually go ahead & install things like their often included toolbars, & just don't activate them if you choose not to add that stuff during installation.

Of course devs could write a new install routine for their games when they put them on GOTD, but that would cost them more $ and they're already giving the game away for free. GOTD staff already put in quite an effort to get the games you see here most every weekend -- imagine how much fewer you'd see if they added a full-blown installer requirement?

@Whiterabbit

At first thanks for your reviews, i really enjoy reading them, much effort you put into this. ;)

The publishers homepage http://fly-games.com is not available (404 error) so i would assume that they just changed their domain or that this domain is an outdated one.

http://falcoware.ru and http://falcoware.com are the accessable and safe one's.

For the malware, it may be that they bundled some setups with kind of Adware, in most older entries they also were detected as "adware" and not "trojan" or "backdoor" or something like that. The game did not work for me, so i went to their site and downloaded the installer. I found Relevant-Knowledge from "T M R G, INC." and the "Babylon" Toolbar in the setup file. For both you have the ability to say "no i won't such stuff on my pc installed". In this case, i'm pretty happy that such "stuff" gets pruned before it will be offered here, so i'm happy to get RAR instead of an EXE installer. But anyway, the game is also not working using the installer, had the same "obj_menu_nastr" error problem on start-up.

Here some entries about the "security status" of FalcoWare
http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/falcoware.com
http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/falcoware.com/downloads/

For offering in RAR, i think most visitors here do not care what's the format in which the game files will be shipped. That it works should have more priority, i really appreciate when i can use full games from here and just UnRAR them instead of installing them. Especially on the offer today you can see the advantage of an RAR file. ;)

But anyway, thanks for the offer, i will keep the game and hopefully we get some info and workaround for the start-up error to make it work.

Regards, Chris.

Installed A-OK on Vista Home Prem. X64. Did not generate a Shortcut on desktop, which solved by making one.

I would have never figured out the Movement of the Turtle unless I had not read "Amanda" #11 post ... so Thanks Amanda. BTW, Amanda is correct ... the Graphic is noce but the Caterpillars are hard to see, they blend in too well in the Grass, I guess that is how it is in Real World & Nature also ... so, I had to use my darn Glassess.

@ Kate D., Thanks for cluing me on "SWare Iron" ... I have never used Google product simply because their aggressive Tracking BS.

I also couldn't access the Game's Homepage, I keep getting "403 Forbidden" access message! What gives! Hmmm! Is this a Bad Sign for this Program!?!?

I Like the music ... fun and up-beaty.

#5 same proble, this time I am stopped by Chrome even before Avast. May be the game is clean but something is wrong with their web page. Tried with IE 8, it gives a 404 ERROR. May be the page redirects to another site and this is the reason virus protections detect a possible attach, Anyway programmers should try to avoid this kind of redirections because if your PC is protected it becames difficult to visit their pages. Have had to run the game in XP compatibility mode for Win 7 SP1, not sure why I need to do this, otherwise gives me an unexpected error when trying to run the game. Most unusual to have these sorts of problems with a modern game. Possibly Graphics card or Soundcard compatibility problem? Very nice game. Very Mario like. Some quibbles. With the graphics, the game is obviously aimed at children, so why make some jumps really quite difficult; also the hazardous green caterpillars are not at all easy to see against a green background, and some other enemies have to be avoided. Why not have a help screen to be able to find out first which enemies harm you if you attempt to jump on them? These minor quibbles aside it's a great fun game with excellent graphics and sound!!!!! :)

Hello everyone,

Downloaded and installed without a hitch on Vista HP x64. The game does have a 80's feel to it but it's still fun to play. Easy enough as well, at least so far.

FYI...It IS a freeware! Not sure why the company would say that the price is $6.99 but I checked the website just to make sure.

Either way, it' a keeper. Thanks Fly Games & GGOTD. Have a nice day everyone and God Bless :-)

@Willy France
Since the program is packaged as winrar self-extractor file (and
does not have not the usual setup routine) it only extracts the files to your "turlelu" folder.
So you'll have to create a shortcut to the game's exe manually to launch the game.

@WR
Hi.:)
Over here TurleLu runs ok on win7-x64 and xp.
That report dates 05 28 2012 and is about the setup file from the Fly Games homepage.
No virus detected in today's gotd winrar se package.

Pressing Esc ends the game.

Thank you for your feedback Robert. As mentioned above i think it may be that the original file i downloaded is the problem. This game has been listed since February. There was a notice saying it was for checking when i downloaded it back then, so there's a good chance it may be a duff file I got. I'll be checking the latest download later when I've got time. :) (I'm trying to reach Dubai at the moment {Spec Op's The Line}) If you like Third person shooters get this and the latest Tom Clancy game Future Soldier. Ignore the Naysayers, both games are superb shooter with amazing graphics and great game play.

As usual, you stripped the setup.exe file from the program and replaced it with a damn .rar file. No place else on the web can you find this game with an rar extension! Which is why you continue to lose many, many visitors to your site. It is also why you continually have problems running the program in Vista and Win 7. A rar file may have worked twenty years ago with XP, but, you really have to get off the addiction of destroying these games with archaic algorithms that do not work with advanced operating systems. Of course no one will see this because you will delete it to cover up your own insecurities.

Steve, I really don't know how you can state that this site is continually losing visitors just because the game has been converted into a rar file. Firstly I've never had any problems installing games from the giveaway site apart from one way back in 2007 that virtually everyone had problems with and today's game. (I suspect today's may be because I used the file I downloaded back in February). I've not bothered trying the latest download yet, but will later to see if it fixes the problem. As for the numbers disappearing (implied by your statement), if anything the numbers have been steadily growing over the past year, with regular download numbers in excess of 10 000 downloads over the 24 hour period and as high as 24 500.

I too received the warning on my system (XP SP3 with avast free and google toolbar installed on Firefox). I think it's more of a warning from google.com than avast, based upon the info from the button "Why was this page blocked?":

Windows 7 32 bit - Game installed without any problems. I always install to my own choice of folder, no problems with that, and dragging the exe file to the desktop to create a short cut was easy enough. I must be going through my second childhood - I'm 68 and I found the game very enjoyable - excellent graphics and pleasant background music and sound effects. I've also got Turtix, Turtix Rescue, and Turtle Odyssey 2, so I presume today's game comes from the same family - they all have excellent graphics and so on, and are equally enjoyable. Anyone who's thinking that today's game is just more of the same - well, yes, they are all platform games - but each game is enjoyable in it's own right, just like the Call of Duty series, and other FPS series.
Many thanks to Fly Games and GAOTD for another good quality game. This one is definitely a keeper.

Just a guess, but from reading the results of the scan posted at Software Informer, it looks like the scan may be triggering on code left over from the game being distributed in an "ad-supported" format. It's detecting some kind of adware module rather than an actual virus.

Most anti-malware programs will err on the side of caution - they'd rather put up with the occasional false positive than risk letting anything slip by. I suspect that's what happening here.

Feel free to take my advice with a grain of salt - I've just been working in IT support for almost twenty years. What do I know?

I LOVE the Turtle games and am so glad to see another one offered here. Thank you Game Give Away!
I have Win XP for my OS and it worked just fine on my computer.
Hoping more Turtles become available in the near future :)

I already own this game, and my kids love playing it. I like it because it's a "nice" game... no killing droids, no space shooters (although I do have those too), no violence per se, and the graphics aren't flashy (no fast scene changes, no laser gun fights) which is easier on the eyes. I don't get much time to play, but the kids can sit and play for enough time that I can get some housework done and still want more. Great game... keep them coming =)
