Love that the number of secrets and stars are posted above the exit door to each level. Missing just one star is one of the really frustrating things in Turtix, the first game.

Seems like a nice game, but like #37 above it's running really slowly.

A do appreciate the counters for Stars and Secrets that were added since the last Turtix game I played. :)

I saw the screenshot and busted up laughing, so I installed the game early yesterday morning, quit, then split for the day. I was told when I got back, "the turtle needs to giggle" so that would be my advice today. Understanding the most minimum about game programming... I can see how the turtle giggling might become annoying, So I would modify the advice, and make a little check box in Turtix Rescue, audio settings, new turtle giggle voice, if checked, on event. (Given you actually take this advice seriously) I don't know which event the turtle should giggle, but hey I am just passing the idea on, it makes sense to me, in this sad world, we definitely need giggling turtles to brighten the day.

.............................Moderator comment................

I can see your point. Maybe the developer will consider a check box. :)

Hello ! Just one additional comment (and I will add it in "suggestions"), "negative" this one.

The 1st Bonus Level (1-B) was a nightmare for me. I am not too familiar with platforms & arcade games. And that was so true in level 1-B. Even in casual mode (the easy one) it was so difficult for me to catch 30 stars in 60 seconds only. I think I replayed that level at least 15 or 20 times. Before I (I-don't-know-how) finally made it !!! Then, my suggestion : as these bonus levels don't seem to be compulsory... it would be so GREAT to be able to SKIP if we can't make it. Thought I'd become crazy... and I could never go further in the game.

I think this has to do, as well, with the fact that sometimes, it is quite difficult to anticipate and evaluate Turtix' rebounds, etc... And, in particular when we have to play against the clock, it is more evident that Turtix' moves are not always as smooth and easy to control as with other similar platform games.

But still, I have a VERY positive feeling about this game (as I said in my much earlier comment yesterday) :-)

Ok,
I tried this and ran into a problem. I suppose it could me my machine but anyway. After I jumped on the 1st little turtle and it told me that once freed the turtle would change direction or something but the little turtle very slowly moves and while I can move my character around I found I can even apparently jump of of a spot and disappear forever. And that is all I can do. Casual mode and XP Sp3. As it stands appears I am going to un-install.

..........................Moderator comment..............................

Thank you for your feedback. Have you worked through the FAQ's section in the game discussion forums? Also try using Game Booster. It seems a lot of the problems arise when using XP. Try playing it in compatibility mode, also try changing your screen resolution and disabling some of the graphics features via the checkboxes when in compatibility mode.

As someone else mentions, this may be portable, so it may be worth saving just in case you update your computer in the not too distant future.

Installed on my Windows 7 machine with no problems. I tried using the mouse controls for the first few levels and found it very frustrating because of lack control on small movements. Then I switched to the keyboard controls and that solved the problem. I also got the same warning from Microsoft Security Essentials the first time that I closed the game. I like the casual mode, takes off the pressure and lets me enjoy the game more. Thank you GOTD for another fun game.

Turtix Adventure is awesome and fun, but i would like to point out a few bugs. 1) in windowed mode, Turix: Rescue Adventure (misses a t in Turtix). 2) installation folder is 'Turtix Resque Andventure' instead of 'Turtix Rescue Adventure' (two typos). 3) Keeps displaying /2 no matter if more than 2 turtles to save on the level, for example 5/2. See image there: http://www.frenchilada.com/TurtixRescue_Bugs.jpg

Thanks for the advice, but none of those things made any difference, either singly or all together.

I don't mind too much that the window is stuck in the top left corner of the screen, but it is a little irritating not to be able to move the mouse outside the window to, say, minimise it. This means that the only way of stopping the game temporarily is to close it (esc) and then restart.

Oh, sorry, should I be asking this in the forum?

...............................Moderator Comment...........................

Hi Sorry for the delay in replying, I fell asleep watching a movie. (long day). You should be able to minimize the game by using the key combination Alt-Tab. That usually works for me when I want to minimize a game .

Thank You Game.GAOTD , whiteRabbit for the hard work that goes in and Alawar Entertainment for the fun game.
Woot been playing Tropical farm for days so this made a nice change.
The game doesn't install it extracts and that usually leaves it Portable (haven't checked for any rouge files yet or played on another OS from the folder)
W7x64 extracted to my host machine and ran the exe without issue only played a short time, before work stop play :(

Game : Fun Platform Game
Issues (limited time of playing ) : none found (mouse issues - didn't have any in the short time I played)
Music: nice and relaxing
Language : English only
Portability : woot :)
Install : extracted and ran NP
Personal view : 9/10 could do with language options (I'm aware GameGAOTD only gets the English version, but sometimes we get multi language games )
Loved the Controls Menu in the Main Window

Broke free the child in me for a good 5 Minutes

Fun game. Thankyou.

I prefer to play in window mode, rather than full screen, but it automatically puts the window into the top left of my screen and captures the cursor so I can't move it.

Have you any idea how I could fix this please?

..........................Moderator comment........................

Right click on the games executable (found in the games installed folder). Select compatibility mode then disable Scaling on high DPI. If that doesn't work try disabling visual themes and lastly desktop composition. (That may cause your desktop to shuffle around though). Also try adjusting your screen resolution temporarily for the game.

Nice little game but it plays like it is in "slow motion" on my Windows 7 machine. The characters move slowly and jump like they are on the moon (low gravity, drifting through space). The game clock even runs slowly.

..........................Moderator comment....................

Sounds like you could be getting a conflict with another program. I'd also try using Game Booster (free from IOBit), which can free up around 40% of your system RAM. Try some of the other fixes I've posted in the FAQ's section in the Game Discussion stickies. I've linked to it just below the scoring section of my review above. Try disabling some of the grapic properties from compatibility mode.

omg, i don't know how i can stand all this cuteness! sweet music, adorable graphic style, and fun goals. add to that Casual mode so i can play at my leisure. poifect!

at first the game would not launch at 1024x600. using a1ctl, i increased the resolution to 1200x768. the game did launch and fit on screen, but then there were two cursors displaying wildly different behaviors (and neither of them could reliably click on anything). performance also took a major hit.

here's what worked for me, and maybe it will help someone else: leave native resolution at 1024x600. change the game properties to run at 640x480 (Ctrl-click application icon. select Properties. click Compatibility tab. click "Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution").

as is, the game is responsive, but performance was improved somewhat by using gamebooster.

so far, i have no suggestions for improvement to game play. a few typos i suggest fixing: the game installs to a directory called "Turtix Resque Andventure." when you launch it, Turtix is spelled "Turix" in the window title. also one of the intro screens (the second one, i think) has "click" spelled "clik."

i installed the most recent ggotd turtix offering but never could get it to run usably on my netbook. this has inspired me to try reinstalling it.

thank you, alawar and gotd for offering this!

(system info: winxp home sp3 on an acer d250, 2gb ram, 1.6ghz, 1024x600 resolution, gamebooster 3.3.1, a1ctl 1.0)

OK, as a rule, not a big platform game fan, but this one hooked me in quick. As someone else mentioned it is a bit reminiscent of SuperCow, one of the few platformers I ever bothered to finish. Thanks for providing this one, its a keeper for me!!

I liked this game a lot, but I'd like it better if there were a few changes. First of all, I was using the keyboard to control him, and his movements didn't respond as quickly as I would have liked. And it seemed like if I hit the up key with one of the arrow keys, sometimes it jumped in the direction, but sometimes it just walked in that direction (and fell off the platform). The controls just didn't seem crisp enough to me.

Second of all, if they're going to tell me to use the "action key" to get out of the level, it would be nice to know what on earth that was! I just tried all the keys on the keyboard to figure out what it was.

Thirdly, when the game first comes up, it tells me I can use the space bar to look around... but I didn't see that that actually did anything. My sister told me that when I got to a later level that it would tell me to use the space bar AND an arrow key :-)

I miss these platform scrollers! This was a lot of fun

What I Liked:
* Cute graphics like the first Turtix game
* The ability to move the camera around without moving Turtix, and that the camera can move more than half a screen
* Easy to restart a level when needed
* Turtix automatically switches between pushing/pulling a box when at the edge or in a corner -- and that objects can be both pushed or pulled
* Having Ctrl button as action button (rather than spacebar) -- I use a laptop with a touchpad, so sometimes the heel of my hand is on the touchpad if I'm using the spacebar as the action button (which leads to accidentally giving the game too much input)

What I didn't like:
* Only 3 health to start? (I'm using casual mode, and have made it to level 1-8). There doesn't seem to be a way to recover health during a level.
* Occasionally frustrating that order of operations matters, but isn't always obvious. (But that's more a gripe than a serious problem)

Thanks for the giveaway!

Another daft little time-waster . . . downloaded, and played just fine, thanks!

I don't play a huge number of games on my computer, or spend a great deal of time on any of them, so a nice cheerful short break while having a cup of tea is my ideal game. This one fits the bill very nicely. It's something you spend those few minutes on, and then you can close it down and get back to work without any animals being killed or harmed in the process.

And it's silly enough not to dwell in your head while you're trying to be a serious grown-up - an added bonus!

Thank you - another goodie for my collection.

I was very pleased to see this game here. I'm not into games much but when I do play, Turtix is one of my favorites. It has been mentioned that this is free from MPC, and thats where I got mine from but it does come with 'frustrations' as stated. I get annoyed with having the browser opening etc so I will be uninstalling the MPC version in favor of this one. Many thanks to Alawar, who make good games, and to GGOTD. Have a great day all.

Downloaded, installed on XPHome 3 with no problems.

Did have a bit of trouble controlling with the mouse as it is a bit floaty. Changing settings didn't help very much. Dug out my USB AxisPad which more or less survived being underwater three days during the flood in 2005. Much praise to that company for a product that would withstand such horrid treatment. Only a few things are dysfunctional.

To my delight the controls I needed to play this game all worked! Much easier to control movements with the game pad. (Didn't try the keyboard stuff as I never could get the hang of it when under time restraints. Am totally a mouse person.)

Am pleased with the game and am now going back to rescue more students!
Rating: Game play – 9
Graphics – 9
Audio – N/A (normally shut off music n sounds low)
RePlay – 8

Hi Stephen! Like today's game, but note mine actually installed to a "Turtix Resque Andventures" folder, a rather unusual spelling considering it isn't spelled that way here OR on the Alawar site - wonder if the GGOTD wrapper changed it?

This is a nice side-scroller, lots of fun, though I haven't had enough play time to give a decent review, but I haven't found an Alawar title that I haven't enjoyed fully. They are all bright, colorful, well-designed and enjoyable, IMO, and well worth installing. Give this a 9 out of 10, just for first impressions AND being a keeper!

#20 - I still have lots of my Commodore gear (including a working SX-64!), and my whole family loved "Castles of Dr Creep". I got a cheat cartridge at one point that allowed us to bypass the maddening circular paths and simply pass thru turnstiles, etc., and my kids loved it either way. Gonna have to look and see if I still have the game, it's one of the best Commodore titles ever, IMO! I know there are ports online that will play on a PC, because I have one of them, too. Long live the Castles!

Hope you and family are all well, Stephen, from across the pond in the (not-so) great State of NY...
John

.....................Moderator Comment..........................

Thank you for your feedback. Ha, I though I'd done a typo when i saw that spelling. Yes it's got to be the wrapper. With respect to the old console. I was looking to get a couple of old consoles. there's a big market for them on EBay at reasonable prices. for example the Sega Genesis with 50 games and all the extras for £50. plus lots of other offers. Even though many of these games are quite old now, they are still very good with respect to game play. When we move and I get a dedicate room for my games I may just purchase one of each of the better consoles with games. There are so many ROM's available online for many of these games we're talking thousands of free games.

I've tried to install this game on a Windows 7 64 bit computer and tried everything to start the game.

I've changed the compatibility mode, the scaling, re-installed it 3 times, and letting it go out to the internet like it asked. It just comes up with a dark screen and locks up the computer. I have no problem playing any other games I've downloaded from GAOTD (I love them, thank you!), but this one has me stumped.

I'm out of ideas an patience. So sorry, but a thumbs down for this game.

I don't often play these type of games but I really enjoyed Turtix (giveaway on 25/02/12) so was very pleased to see this one here. Initially the graphics seemed a little 'older' than Turtix and the one issue that I do have are the spelling mistakes - the folder it is created in is named 'Turtix Resque Andventure' and in-game the second screen states 'Clik to continue'. Relatively minor but not ideal for teaching youngsters the correct spelling...

The gameplay seems to be more puzzle based than the other version but you can progress without freeing all the young turtles which makes it ideal for younger players. It is different enough from Turtix to make it worthwhile playing. Definitely a keeper!

Once in a time I used a C64 and there was a game called "The Castle of Dr. Creep". This was long ago ofcourse in a time that even our money was made out of wood and computers where fueled with peet.

Playing "Turtix -rescue adventures", I got memory flashes about "The Castle of Dr. Creep". In that game you had to rescue somebody (you and a friend) by escaping the confinement of the castle. You walked through all kind of aisles escaping mummies, monsters and rays and you had to work your way through all kinds of closed gates and transporters some protected with rays.

You had to play the game with two persons because alone you could not press a button on one side of the screen in some dungeon and dive through a gate on the other side of the screen to get in a part of the catsle that was closed before and needed to succeed in esacping.

In Turtix, you have to escape little monsters or junmp on them, you have to free the little ones and prepare the escape by moving boxes.
There is some similarity here.

What I liked very much about "The Castle of Dr.Creep" was the fact that you had to cooperate while playing rather than compete playing against eachother. This was (and is) rather a unique concept, competitions is the main way to go and not cooperation.

I think that it would make a rather nice suggsetion to Alawar (to my taste), to make a sequel that will be enabled to play with two players (not two joystick like the old times, but through IP-connection and two pc's) that have to coorperate and help eachother to free the little turtlesa nd win the game

For what it is worth, I was playiing around with the idea the whole time and had to write it down. Hopefully it'll be rewarding once :)
And if it is just a silly idea for the rest of you, just excuse me getting it out of my system.

No problem Mr. Rabbit!

Note on the selections when setting up game box. Do not choose the fast method they suggest if you do not want extra's added, choose Custom.

You can then uncheck the three boxes that follow.

On the next screen is one which at first all you notice is the accept button.

Look on the left hand side bottom of the screen. There is a small "decline" which looks as though it is grayed out. Click on it to decline the product offered and your game box will continue it's install minus all the junk.

The game mentioned by W.R. loads just fine and plays well on XP Home. Not my cuppa, but I checked out the opening and beginning of the game with the tutorial activated. Now to check out our game!!

I like these type of games. This was the most unjoyable one I have ever played. I like to play in window mode, so started the game there. The movement was so choppy and laggy it bothered me. Thought well maybe it was because I was in windowed mode. So I went to full screen it got a little better, but not much. So I don't know if that is how the game is or my computer, but it enough to make me not enjoy this.
Also I got very bored with it fast!
I do not like using the 'action" key to move the boxes. Using the mouse is almost impossible, so that part is basically useless and makes me wonder why have have controlls for the mouse at all.

I did not like how the background and forground moved together, it also distracted from the enjoyment.
The levels I did do I was able to do it all and find everything.

Since this is one of the types of games I REALLY enjoy and want more of I feel My rating is valid and I will rate it 2/10. I will not be playing any more levels or this game again thus the very low score.

Side note thanks for all the games and types of game you get for us to try. I have gotten some games I would never have tried and have loved them.

Clarification for Alawar's free game. You must have the game box to get a free game, you will not find the game just by surfing their site. What you will find is an hour demo, so get the game box. Here is the link:

http://www.alawar.com/item/alawar-game-box/

Note: If you are using Avast Antivirus, you will probably get a msg box telling you the program is new and suggestion you not download it. The game box is safe, click the drop down arrow and choose Continue with download.

Thanks for posting the link to Alawar's Gamebox. I tend to forget that not everyone will know how to get it.

Vibrant color but slow mouse response. Difficult to gauge travel accurately. On this machine I would have to mod the PCs mouse settings to get it to work right. It is a cute game and will be enjoyed in our household. Give it a try.

@ MOD
P.S.
I genuinely fully support and understand your view on DRM and DVD/BluRay movies as I like you are a "paying customer" as you are and because I too am "the one whose paying through the nose for genuine copies." of both games and movies....
I have become very unpopular at the Steam forum for addressing the subject in my own way , as Steams "Steam Subscriber Agreement" are completely unacceptable...
Quote :

May I recommend GOG.com instead ? ;-)

.......................Moderator comment....................

ha ha that's so funny, I to have reservations but it's with GOG not Steam. I love the way they have brought to life many of the old classics, but I'm also annoyed because they have hoovered up quite a few good games that were originally considered abandonware and totally free to download and play from loads of well known abandonware sites. (for example Darklands, Syndicate, The Incredible Machine parts 1 through to 4, Theme Hospital, Blood ! & 2, the earlier UFO titles, Duke Nukem 3D, Decent & Decent 2 plus others. Until about 2 years ago all of the above titles were freely available from most good abandonware sites, now they have had to be removed because somehow the guys at GOG have managed to find the original owners. I always considered abandonware a perk for all the games i'd purchased over the years, that no longer worked on my newer systems that it until the advent of emulators like DOSBox.

It seems to me that the guys at GOG are searching through the archives and when they find a decent abandonware title track down the original owners to seek permission to sell the games 9though i'm only assuming and may be totally wrong. :)

One good thing about GOG games is that DOSBox, where needed has been integrated into the games script so that the user has no problems running it. Tat i do like, but then i had no problems using DOSBox on its own to run DOS games. I think if they permanently halved their games it wouldn't feel so bad, lol.

'scuze the rant. ;-)

@ MOD / Stephen(?)/Whiterabbit(?)

Thank you for the help and kind feedback....
I am sitting at a setup that uses a KVM switch (for 8 PCs) with PS2 hence the use of PS2 mouse and keyboard.
They have been threatning to remove the PS2 since the Pentium 3 era (I had a private telephone conversation with Intel's European Chief/Director back then and the no PS2 and only USB subject were pushed by Intel back then , but many many in "the industry" still got equipment that uses PS2 so it were a little harder for them to get rid of the PS2 than they thought.

With respect to Alawar then I really appreciate your warning and I will confront Alawar because I wrote and asked them in April this year because I am so tired of being tied up by the BigFishGames concept (they are very nice I just hate the DRM & DRM client) for many "casual" games, so I wrote Alawar and asked if I could re-install my games offline if I bought from them. Their answer is below here :

Hello,

Here's the response of the support service to your message sent on 04/23/2012 20:19:08:

1. If you buy the game key you may use it on any other PC without internet connection.

2. You can subscribe at Alawar Unlimited http://www.alawar.com/unlimited.php.

3. You can find the cost of a registration key on the window that appears when you load and exit the game.

From what you've posted above it looks like they have reverted to their old system, which really pleases me. They did change it fairly recently to the one PC one registration process recently, which I wasn't pleased about. I've purchased Alawar games in preference to Big Fish since I dropped out of the BFG subscription a few years ago (though that was really prompted by the plethora of HOGs being released by them). I have since discovered that once a BFG game is registered you can back up the installed folder and install it anywhere you wish. Though becasue it's a manual installation you do have to create your own shortcuts and there's no uninstaller included, but it was a pleasant surprise. I was also under the misapprehension that you could only play BFG games via their client, but again that has thankfully been proven wrong. :) so I'm not so down on BFG any more. to be honest, I've sort of moved away from the general arcade providers over the last year and moved to clients like Desura and purchasing games from Indivania, both of which have a fantastic array of indie games that for me are much more interesting that your standard arcade fare.

Oh by the way, there's another Indie bundle available now. you can find details over in the forums

Personally I don't mind the PS2 disappearing. apart from a couple of back ups I have all USB mice and keyboards now. I do have a USB converter that allows me to use a PS2 in a USB port, but I've never used it yet.

I discovered something a little odd during instal. Microsoft Security essential popped up a "warning" stating it was unfamiliar with this type of file (turtix.exe) and asked if I would like to send the file to Microsoft for study.
Not the exact phrasing (I should have copied it)
Just thought I would mention it as it was a little odd.
Game seems to work though.

.......................Moderator comment....................

I think Microsoft Security Essentials has been updated very recently because for the past few days virtually every game I've run has had a pop up from Security Essentials asking for it to be sent to Microsoft for study. :) As always, the giveaway team thoroughly check any file before it is allowed to come to our personal computer.

I just wanted to thank the developers for having a casual mode, for those of us who like to play the game, but don't want the challenge of losing lives and starting over! I really enjoy the game given.

Thanks again GGAOTD (and Alawar) for a great and fun game !! :)

I do not often play platform games. But when I do, I am like a kid !! ;) I just love it !! Played 10 levels already, as of now. And I will definitely keep the game, and go on with the exploration and other levels !!

As with other platform games, I definitely prefer using keyboard... as mouse's moves are more difficult to control for me (especially when we have to make very precise moves) But I don't mind.

I like the game, the increasing difficulty, obstacles and ennemies as we progress in the game. I like this great idea to free emprisoned turtles, on top of exploring the mazes and collecting jewels. I also like so much to look for secret areas (as in Supercow and Turtle Odyssey 1 & 2 - my only other 3 platform games) And I find it original and so practical (1) to be able to look around thanks to "space bar" + direction keys (2) that the bubbles in which the little turtles are emprisoned lightens in green, yellow or red, depending on whether the way to the portal is safe or not.

Anyhow... for don't-know which reason exactly, I feel like Supercow or Turtle Odyssey remain my top favourite platform games, with 5+ stars ;) (out of 5) ... And, based on these first levels, I would give very close to 5 stars (out of 5) to this one... In other words, these are just small details that make a difference.

G'mornen Stephen and the rest of the ggaotders. 1st off if you have a netbook this game probably will not work, as it doesnt on mine which is a little unusual. Looked like a good game had the other version before this netbooked crashed. For me it doesnt even give a splah screen it just shuts it seld off, which in my experience means 1 of the 3 video settings will not work with the graphics lol. I think developers need to include video resolutions in their descriptions, so netbook users will know right off the bat if the game will operate on their equipment. Sorry thats the only feedback i can offer on this game so if its not posted i will understand. Thanks Stephen for all the work you put into reviews, they are helpful despite what some peeps say :)

This is a very nice little sidescroller game and Giveaway , thank you !

The game however acts weird on my "game rig" as when in game menu or game the cursor or game figure constantly "sails" slighty towards the left.
My "Game rig" uses Windows XP Pro SP3 , and got PS2 Keyboard and optical mouse + got a Logitech RumblePad F510 connected to USB (Pad in X mode) .
I have tried ro move both mouse and gamepad controls to stop the "constantly sailing left" but to no avail.
I'll say that this game defenitely needs a menu where one can choose what controller to use so it may act/"play" more nicely...
Also it is , for me , a very great annoyance that it does neither show gamepad configuration or allows for in game configuration of GamePad controls for movement , action , "whatever"....
(I also have an USB Joystick - not attached at present - but I would never use for this type of game I would much prefer a Gamepad instead)

One can buy this game at GamersGate along with "Turtix" , but I do however wish that Alawar would put all their games/their whole catalogue DRM free on GamersGate or GOG and put them on sale once in a while...
Or that Alawar would have its own shopping site that accepted PayPal (rather than one having to buy Alawar games through the Game interface) and had a sale once in a while themselves....

.........................Moderator comment....................

Thank you for your feedback. To fix the mouse drift try disabling the display scaling and visual themes. Or changing the resolution. I've had the same problem with my mice occasionally. Usually rebooting has fixed the problem. Also try using a USB mouse as opposed to a PS2 (assuming your mouse is the same as your keyboard?. My latest motherboard has dropped the mouse PS2 socket. Only got one for keyboard, but I don't use the old PS2 keyboards any more unless I have boot up problems.

Up until about a year ago you could get games from Alawar via Paypal. I purchased mot of my games usin that method, but since they introduced their new idea of paying a subscription to be able to play all of their games it's made it harder to buy their games. also the codes they give you now only work once. If you want to re install the game onto a new computer you have to request a new code. One of the reasons i purchased from Alawar in the first place was the fact that once you got your code that was it. You could install it on any of your computers as many times as you liked. I won't be purchasing any more games from them.

I supposed the file sharing site have helped to put down such more agreeable registration processes. Personally I hate DRM. not because it stops me from ripping games off, but because it's caused so much trouble with games I've legally purchased. It's the same with the DVD's and Blue Rays i purchased. I have to sit through a lecture on not buying bootleg videos, yet I'm the one whose paying through the nose for genuine copies. those that rip those movies probably delete the parts that tell you not to bootleg, so their customers don't get the same lecture.

Nice Alawar game.

You can move your turtle around the landscape/maze and jump on the disappeared young turtles imprisoned in the bubble to free them.
They will walk to their freedom through a portal and you have to follow to reach the next level.
On the way you gather things that you encounter.

Pitty, like always, the games starts in fullscreen mode. You can change that later. It really is a rare treat when a game gives you the choice at startup.

Thanks Fubar. I've already been reading about the 680 and a friend mentioned the 690 while chatting last night. I will probably purchase a couple when I start my next build (unless they have started on the 7 series by then , lol). I probably won't be building another computer until I can afford to buy one of those motherboards with a dual cpu and 8 memory slots included. I already have part of the water cooling system for the new build, but moneys tight so it'll be another year before I can afford to build a new one outright from scratch. The main advantage I see is being able to take advantage of the new PCI-E 3.0 slots. I have them on my new computer, but the 6 series wasn't available 4 months ago, so I ended up with two of the 5 series which don't support PCI-E 3.0. Thankfully my newest build is fine for the latest games. I've got too much video RAM (6GB) as I purchased the Gainward phantom cards. I'll give the computer to my son when I do build a new one.

Thanks for the info mip, (already linked to MPC); however their is a difference between today's giveaway and the versions from MPC and other free sites. That is, you don't get any of the associated problems/hassles you get with games downloaded from those sites, for example toolbar installations and browsers being opened or even changed and home pages being changed.

The giveaway version is clean of such annoyances. When posting such links please make the community aware of the problems associated with such downloads. Thank you. :)

I wasn't informed as to what game was being given away last night. I discovered what this weekends games would be when I got up this morning about an hour before the giveaway, so I really haven't had time to play the game in depth; however I have purchased this and played it several years ago so can say it's well worth downloading. I've done my usual job below except I've used Gamezebo's review in the game section instead of my own impressions and have used Alawar's images, otherwise this wouldn't have been posted for a couple more hours because writing up one of these reviews takes a minimum of at least 4 or 5 hours.

Installationl>:

Today’s game giveaway is a platform arcade game; the second in the Turtix series of games called Turtix Rescue Adventures!.

The giveaway downloads to a 24.9MB zip file that unpacks to a read me and dual activation and set up module. To those new to the game giveaway that means just install the game and it should automatically register because the activation module is wrapped in with the set up file. The game installs to

C:\Games\Turtix Rescue Andventure\Turtix.exe

The installed game is 31.4Mb in size. There is no shortcut installed to the desktop nor to the Start/Programs list. So make a note as to where the program is listed (see above). You will need to create your own shortcuts from the Turtix exe file. Also there is no uninstaller, so to delete the game just dump the whole folder in your waste bin. According to the properties there are no previous versions This is the first time we've been given this version before. The game works on win XP, Vista and Win 7 platforms.

If you get any problems once the giveaway is over, or late in the day (there's no moderation usually for the last five or six hours until the last half hour or so of the giveaway) please post them over in the forums. I've started a thread HERE in the game discussion forums. Otherwise follow the link I've provided just below the conclusion and scoring section; that will take you to a thread I posted a few weeks ago that covers most FAQ's regarding problems running game giveaways. Thank you.

The Gamel>:

You needn't be familiar with the previous Turtix game or other platform-like puzzlers like Lemmings or Vikings to enjoy playing through Turtix - Rescue Adventures. Don't be fooled by its cutesy graphics: this game will provide hours of head-scratching fun for those who like a challenge. Oddly, though, it's missing some features we liked in the original game - but we'll get to that in due time. Turtix the bug-eyed turtle is back, and this time you’re asked to travel to three huge worlds – the Magic Forest, Underground Caves and Barren Desert – to rescue fellow students accidentally trapped in magical bubbles. But these hapless creatures will simply walk blindly to the exit of the multi-tiered level, so it’s up to you to preemptively protect them from harm before you set them free. Therefore, you must shutdown traps and bypass prickly enemies before the student turtles can hurt themselves. You’ll accomplish this by activating switches, pushing crates onto dangerous spikes or taking out baddies by jumping on them. If you get hurt falling onto spikes or dropping off a ledge you’ll lose a valuable health point but if you find chests hidden on the levels you can gain some of that back (or be rewarded with other bonuses, such as an extra life or more time added to your clock for higher points). You’ll also collect stars and find secret areas to collect gems. The player must also figure out how to reach hard-to-reach places, such as ledges that require a crate to jump on, buttons that open doors, underwater caverns, teleportation portals and a gorge you can only bypass by climbing on vines. The trick is to figure out which order is required or else you might have to restart the level and try a different path. Speaking of which, some of the tasks you had to complete in a certain order didn’t make much sense. Specifically, early on in the game I had to push two crates over a spiky area before my little turtle buddies walked towards it. But if you choose to push the, say, left box onto the spikes instead of the right one first, the second box won’t fit for some reason, even though they’re identical. Instead you need to push the left box on first, followed by the right. If you do it in the wrong order the puzzle cannot be completed. This was frustrating. Another minor beef: Gamers navigate around the various levels using a mouse, keyboard or mouse, but the it’s too bad the player can’t remap the keyboard commands; I found it awkward to press the Up arrow key to jump when I would’ve preferred the spacebar as required in the first game. Speaking of which, unlike Hollywood movies, casual game sequels are usually better than their predecessors because game designers add new features and fix issues. Oddly, Turtix: Rescue Adventures isn’t quite as good as the first game because of only one game mode (instead of two in the original), two levels of difficulty (opposed to three) and I preferred the closer “camera” in the first game to see all the great graphics with more detail. That said, Turtix: Rescue Adventures is still a very fun and challenging puzzle game with 60 levels, dozens of secret areas, bonus levels and tougher “boss” creatures you must defeat by studying its pattern and attacking at the right moments. The game is also a refreshingly unique option for casual players bored with Match-3, hidden object and time management games.

Conclusionl>:

This is an excellent and very colorful platform game that's ideal for the family. There are slight differences from the original Turtix, that in my opinion take away from the game, for example there's only one mode and the game world has been set further away with respect to perspective compared to the original. This gives a feeling of being detached from the game (though that may just be me) whereas with the first Turtix game I felt I was right there in the action. Still, it's nothing major. The game play remains with the endearing character of Turtix.

The whole family will love this game especially the younger ones, though I'm sure adults will to. I used to play this with my kids when I purchased it from Reflexive Arcade some years ago.

Game play is well worth a good 8 out of 10 IMO. Though the overall score comes to 7.25 out of 10 using the criteria below:

If you have any problems installing today's game please go HERE for help.

If you're looking for something other than today's game check the didimatic site via THIS link for some brilliant deals. Steam has an excellent deal on Sanctum

You can either buy the game itself for $2.49/£1.74 or the game and all dlc for $5/£3.75 (8dlc's). There's also 50% off Batman: Arkham City + DLC. You can get the game for $14.99/£9.99 and four DLC's for £7.71 and there's also a 66% deal on Batman Arkham Asylum game of the year edition ($6.80/£3.40) which you can find HERE.

Morrowind, the third in the Elder Scrolls series celebrates it's 10th anniversary this week, so you can get great deals on both Morrowind: Game of the Year Edition and Oblivion Game of the Year Deluxe Edition for $9.99/£6.49 and $12.49/£9.99 respectively (You can also get the non deluxe edition of Oblivion Game of the Year for $9.99/£7.49. The difference between the two is that you get some extra mods such as Fighter's Stronghold Expansion, Spell Tome Treasures, Vile Lair, Mehrune's Razor plus much more. All of these extra mods are available for free, but they have been incorporated into the commercial game in the correct order to ensure no conflicts arise. There are several other deals available from Steam as well as many more from Gamersgate and Gamestop; all of which you can find via the Didimatic site, which I've linked to above.

You can get Aqua Bubble 2
for free from Realore this weekend and a new game is available from Alawars game box called Discord Times. (You need to install the free gamebox from Alawar to access the free games, which for newcomers change over approximately every month). If that's not enough, check out the Game Discussion forums HERE for details of other games either free or on deals. For example, Epic Inventor, Mecha World, OGS Mahjong, Desolate Hope, Zombie Grinder, Insane Zombie Carnage, Oolite, as well as others i mentioned last week for example a superb 3D space game called Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn which is totally free. There's also updates to games I've posted over the last three years as well as several other new postings that include I shall Remain, Counterstrike 2D, a SAM Missile simulator, Arx Libertatis, SCP- Containment Breach (horror), Speed Dreams (motorsport sim), Battlemass (strategy game), Naev (space arena shmup) and a cartoon like shooter called bullet Train, plus many more (well over 2000 free games). There's also at least three or four indie game bundles still available; where you pay what you want. You'll find details over in the Game discussion forums HERE
as well. :)

The latest 24 hr deal from Steam is Titan Attacks! Which has the same easy-to-learn and addictive gameplay of the classic arcade shoot 'em up, but is packed full of extras - new features, new strategies, and stylish neo-retro visuals.

Indie Bundles still activel>

Oh yeah, nearly forgot, there's another Indie bundle just gone live called The Indie Royale May Hurrah Bundle, that contains more excellent Indie games, in this case, Dungeon Defenders (brilliant cartoony tower defense game), Containment: The Zombie Puzzler (a strategy game) , Data Jammers: Fast Forward (continuously moving three dimensional driving and destruction game set within a retro wireframe world of impossible race tracks). Weird Worlds: Return to infinite space (Sci Fi Adventure/Strategy game), and Brainpipe: A Plunge to In-humanity (A real time spatial navigation and quick reflexes game with psychedelic visuals). A minimum of approx $5 is asked for, though you can pay more. The price fluctuates according to what's already been given. The more someone gives, the higher the next person has to give.

Also the Indie Gala IV bundle is still live, and now has 9 games plus one more secret item to unlock this week. The games you get for a paltry $5 are A.R.E.S Extinction Agenda, Alien Shooter 1 & 2, Disciples II: Gallean's Return (superb Strategy RPG), altitude, Steel Storm: Burning Retribution (you can also get the first in the series for free, check it out in the Game Discussion forums), Really Big sky (I bought this several weeks ago for a lot more than what you pay for all of these games and have ended up with two more copies via two different bundles. all of the previous listed games are Steam key only, though there are also two DRM free games called Wake and Lunnye Devisty, with one more item to add. There's also music included with the package. You can find details of both bundles in the Game discussion forums via the following link:

Similar Gamesl>:

You will find turtix: Rescue Adventures available 24/7 from MyPlayCity (MPC) HERE, however MPC do try to install toolbars and hijack your browser,. You can avoid these by making sure you uncheck the check-boxes when installing the game; also every time you start the game those check-boxes will be presented to you again, so make sure you uncheck them each time, otherwise you'll be the proud owner of a MyPlayCity/Ask tool bar and you'll have to fiddle around to change your browsers home page back to whatever you have it set to. That said MyPlayCity do have a fantastic choice of arcade games from all genres of arcade games, so although those things are an annoyance, I think it's still worth the effort, especially if you can't afford to purchase many arcade games. There is another site where you can get a decent selection of arcade games, called Gametop (been around for several years now) as well as others such as FreeGamePick and Jenkat games, but they all have similar routines for trying to install toolbars and hijack your browser and search engine. Gametop has become particularly aggressive with respect to this. You can find those sites if you wih to check them out via Google.

A Request for helpl>:

Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average between 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of 'potential' cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away even more decent games.

Please leave some feedback once you’ve checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain what your reasons were for the feedback you post. You could also leave suggestions for improving the game, for example, this game could do with more block types for the levels editor, add more power-ups, describing the ones you think would be suitable, add some mini games (which seem all the rage in some arcade games now) or enable the user to be able to change the in game music easily.

Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to post a constructive comment.

Regards

Whiterabbit aka Stephen
