My grandson finally came over to try this game. Guess I should have tried it on his computer before he came. It just keeps looping to the stats screen over and over. He is playing it on mine, and loves it, but I have the same invisible mouse problem that Michael Burkley described on mine. But at least it plays.

Not really 'an adventure' but I enjoyed playing for a short time. I would like to have played longer but the graphics around the main game play area appear to be constantly moving, which gave me a headache and made me a dizzy.

Thanks for this very cool game! This is so much better then most of the free games offered on this site. I played it for almost 3 hours straight and had one hell of a good time. It does get pretty hard about half way in, but trying to get over a 96% score kept me playing levels over and over.
I haven't played any of the console "rock" games so I'm new to this type of game.
On person commented that this is like "audio surf" No it's nothing like that game. In that game you try to pick up blocks that move with the beat of your music, in this game you are making the music. And it sounds sweet with a good set of cans on my head! I like this type of guitar music so I'm really enjoying the music.

It looks like it would be a lot of fun, but unfortunately it doesn't work for me properly. The graphics were very slow on my 3 year old PC, so the cursor thingy seemed to jump around a lot.

Eh,it is okay, but Reflexive's Music Catch is much better. Mouse timing is off, even in the tutorial.

I am using an Acer 5700 laptop with a touchpad, and it seems that the touchpad works better as an input than the mouse I have.

This is an excellent game with great sound and graphics. Flawless installation.

I can't add anything to whiterabbituk's great (as always) detailed review, and thanks for that! I would give it a higher rating though, maybe as I am a musician and found this to be highly intuitive. 9.5/10, so far.

I'd just wish that the comments were still working on the other giveaway today. I'm distressed about the hidden service that one seems to add to Windows! Thankfully, no problem like that here. I wish you were running that one too whiterabbituk!!

I've liked the game so far. My problem was that it began in full-screen mode, which on my landscape 22 inch monitor resulted in the mouse cursor not being visible. I had to move it around until I could select "Options" (the mouse cursor was there but not visible) and deselect the full-screen mode. The game opened in a window (small) and the mouse cursor could be seen. It would have been nicer full-screen though.

Just for the technicality of it, game also opens on Win 2K. Can't play it however, as my emergency machine is just too slow. According to the memory monitor I'm running, it will play on significantly less than 256meg RAM. Probably only half that is necessary. My observation is the slowness is either caused by my ancient onboard video chip - only 8 meg memory with a 128 MHZ processor - or my CPU, a 400 MHZ Pentium II.

I mention these details because, even though the specs say it will play on ME or even 98, anyone still running one of those Operating Systems will probably need a machine with a little more power than these old OSs shipped with.

Of course, someone might say why even try, and, one of these days I hope to repair one of three newer machines so I can ask that question myself - :) - but, happily, there are exceptions. Last weeks 7 Wonders played fine on this machine, as did the recently given away Alien Stars and Star Defender 3. Go figure.

None of which is meant as a complaint. Thanks Fly Games and GGOTD for the giveaway.

Corrections:

NOT 100% fault free, because I just noticed that after the Fly Games splash screen, one sees splash2.jpg on a blue background. Checking in the fsdata folder, this file does indeed contain just placeholder text on a plain blue background (OOPS!).

If this bothers you (and you feel brave!), you can stop this screen displaying by editing the file res.xml to remove line 67 (which refers to splash2.jpg). BUT: take a backup copy of the file FIRST to avoid any potential problems!

The other weirdness is that the windowed version Title Bar reads Jungle: Your Melody v.1 which looks odd.

Final tip: if you create a shortcut for the game and want a decent icon for it, open the shortcut's Properties, click Change Icon, and select the tunes.ico file in the install folder. (Disclaimer: this is in XP; the precise instructions may differ for later OSs like Vista and Win7!)

REALLY final tip: click the RIGHT mouse button to pause the game and display a PAUSE menu. ;) Why no mention of this in the Help?

And a final question: do other games of this type have little extras like those little jewels that appear at the end of a track as bonus items? >shrug<

as for the exe, it didn't install anything for me it only started up the game

OK, I've now tried Tunes: Jungle Adventure and firstly, thanks to Fly Games and GGOTD for giving us all the chance to try it for free today.

I would still prefer an option to use keys rather than a mouse, as I find it tricky to steer accurately enough at the speed necessary to play the game.

The game graphics are pleasant enough, and I did particularly enjoy the 'talk through' tutorial, which was a nice touch. Beyond that, what else can one say? If you've seen Guitar Hero, then you know what to expect. The game is technically well enough done, and once you find the Full Screen tick box in Options, you can run it in a window if you wish.

I'm fairly sure that any hard core 'music' gamers, or those who want to spend a LOT of time playing a game of this type, will go straight to Frets On Fire and not look any further, as it is open source, free, and pretty extensible and customisable. Not to mention the LOADS of extra tunes (levels?) available from the ever-growing world-weiwide FoF fan base. It's a bit like anyone who is a fan of the original Elite will look no further than Oolite once they discover it.

But Tunes is obviously designed for the casual gamer who (like myself) wants to play this style of game on an occasional basis: and for that, Tunes certainly hits the spot, and is in my opinion worth the small asking price for a fault-free (in my testing so far!) game of this type. But as I said, casual gamers like myself might equally go straight for one of the online or freeware games out there, so its success will ultimately depend on how many people like its 'good looks' and its general style when compared to those online/freeware games of this type.

[Is that enough feedback for the developers, Stephen? ;)]

really good game, the .ico file will not connect with the main application, what is the second start up image supposed to imply, as it pretty much is a blank blue canvas with plain words. Should note the re-playability. Add a mini game when you reach a island. Should have starred notes from the first level instead of the longer notes.

@Cad Delworth The game Frets on Fire(the one the Wabbit/NoName is talking about) and Heroes in Guitarland are both played with keyboard. Week 3 - Free game for the weekdays - Frets on Fire (similar to Guitar Hero) « Giveaway of the Day Forums - http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/3967 Check it out!

Cool game. Nice to have a Live tut to go with it(I even won 4 awards).
The music is relaxing so far..wonder if it gets frenzied... :)And the graphics are pretty. Game play is easy but I am betting it gets challenging.Would be nice to add your own music to it....Some Jimi Hendrix or The Who etc. That would get your heat a pumping. I can see you can really get into this game..Quite addictive..

Thanks GGOTD and Fly Games for the keeper of a game. And as always a wonderful review Oh Great Wabbit!

My initial impressions are good on this game. The game runs pretty solid, takes very little CPU time, and I can actually play it on my old 64MB graphic card. That's not to say it doesn't have its faults. For example, I couldn't get the lines properly in the tutorial. You have to click earlier than when the line reaches your paddle to get the points. The mouse movements are a little sluggish, and I tend to over-correct and miss parts of the note. I also wish that there was keyboard input. It'd be easier to play Frets-on-Fire style than with the mouse along. Of course, chances are I could whip up an AutoIt program to translate key presses into cursor positions. The only thing that might not work are the melodies (chords?).

Now, to the modding section. This game was programmed in BlitzMax, which is a combination of Blitz BASIC and native code for great performance. The data.pak file under the media folder can be extracted with my UnTrio tool, and contains only game graphics. (If you decide to use the extracted files instead of the original data.pak, make sure to replace it with a blank data.pak instead of just deleting it because the game will throw an exception.) As for the songs, I'm guessing it uses the same format as Frets-on-Fire, though I can't verify because it's been years since I've played it and I can't be bothered to download it right now. You can add custom levels by editing media\levels.xml. It's pretty self-explanatory.

I'll be sure to play this game more.

This wasn't too bad, but you have to be darn sure your comfortable with the mouse before you start playing it. After a while, just made my wrist ache after playing two tracks. It's nicely presented, it's got a decent enough soundtrack, but the gameplay is ruined by the mouse. I wouldn't go so far to say that it was lame, though.
I reckon if keys could be used it'd be just another Frets on Fire only with a jungle theme and a couple of twists to it.
Essentially it's not a bad game.

@NoName, #21: What you say is true for non-Windows machines, but as far as I can tell, the Windows download for Frets On Fire is an EXE file which installs everything necessary to run the game.

So, to any Windows users reading this who have seen your comment above, Don't Panic! No fancy computing skills are required for the Windows FoF, just download and run the latest version. I think (but don't know as I don't own any Apple kit on principle) that the same may apply to the Mac version?

Hope that helps anyone who may have been confused and assumed what you said referred to Windows; and BTW that was a very nice summary for Linux users. :)

Finally, for those interested, the official FoF site is at http://fretsonfire.sourceforge.net/

additional info on the frets on fire download. If people want to make use of this game they should be aware of the following, you might ad it to the post on the forums

First, the following supporting Python libraries should be installed.

- Python 2.4 or later
- PyGame
- PyOpenGL and a video card with recent OpenGL drivers
- Python Imaging Library
- numpy
- Optional: psyco specializing compiler

After this, the game can be started by running the src/FretsOnFire.py file. For
example, in Linux and Mac OS X this can be done from the terminal with the
following commands:

$ cd src
$ python FretsOnFire.py

for python go to http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.7.2/python-2.7.2.msi
for pygame go to http://pygame.org/download.shtml
for pyopengl go to http://sourceforge.net/projects/pyopengl/
for Python Imaging Library go to http://www.pythonware.com/products/pil/
for numpy go to http://sourceforge.net/projects/numpy/files/NumPy/
and finally for the psyco specializing compiler go to http://psyco.sourceforge.net/download.html

I know it's not like me to comment on a game without trying it first ;), but is it possible to use KEYS in this game? The developer site is very low on information, unfortunately.
NOTE TO DEVELOPER: Please say on your site whether your game REQUIRES a mouse, or whether there is an option to use keys!!!

As you may recall, Stephen, I use a trackball, not a mouse; and I've found 'music' games almost impossible to play even with a 'normal' mouse in the past. In fact, I find them hard enough to play on the keyboard! :D

Finally, to TeeK (#9): I play bass and bass guitar myself (have done so for many years) and I haven't personally found 'music' games help my playing: almost the contrary! Neither does my 'expertise' on the bass help me play these games: they're simply tests of your reaction speed IMHO. That said, I understand what you mean about it helping you 'visualise' a tune on the strings and gain an understanding of rhythm. Just remember that in most of these games that where the notes appear on the screen don't necessarily relate to how you would play the melody on a real guitar! ;)

.....................Moderator Comment.................

Sorry for the late reply Cad, had to relinquish my computer over to my sons friends so that they could play one of their favorite online games, then I nodded off for almost four hours. Yes I remember that you use a trackball. I don't think it's possible to use the keyboard unfortunately. The nature of the game wouldn't allow you to play the game effectively. There was a good idea suggested above, that is usig a pen and tablet.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity of trying these games.
This one appealed to me as I am a professional musician (beit a keyboard synth player) I also play Guitar and found this game most interesting. It proved challenging to as I have an old slow computer and there is a time lag on some games.
Excellent graphics and I think the instructional introduction proved a winner especially for non-musical players. It is a pity more games does not include an instructional intro, probably other games manufactures should take note (pardon the pun!!)

I think you have a winner here, and I think we could do with a lot more musical inspired games.
Keep up the good work and many thanks.

The game has awesome 'driving music' and feels like you're racing down a deserted road at dusk. The guitar and drum solos are the trickiest to get right on the first try. I'm using a mouse right now but wonder if a pen tablet would have better control.

This is one of the best giveaway games given here. Very nice and relaxing melodies. Thank you.

My only problem is the response of the mouse. I don't feel very comfortable moving like this, I got tired very quickly.
Maybe an option for using the keyboard navigation keys could work, though I am not sure.

.....................Moderator Comment...............

I felt the same. You can get stick on teflon feet that may help with movement of the mouse. Also see the comment below yours. One of those pen and tablets may work better.

Thanks, fun little game, but have a couple small problems. At start a blue screen comes up and says "splash screen". then game starts. The second is the game icon is not associated with the exe, so I have a generic icon to launch game. Other than that, I like the game! It's like guitar hero for your mouse.

........................Moderator comment....................

I have the same. I was going to see if I could swap the demo exe for the giveaway version or change the path so that i could use the demo's shortcut. Beware though if you decide to try this as I ended up with Babylon installed even though i'd requested for it not to be installed. Thankfully the Babylon installer removed the product from my computer.

This game is clever as it teaches you the basics of playing a guitar!

Frets, sustained notes and the position of "notes" giving a good indication of how you would play a guitar.

It actually deserves considerable praise in helping a beginner like myself. Serious gamers, or those who can play an instrument, particularly a stringed instrument, might not find it a terrific challenge, but by round 6 I was having a bit of trouble keeping the accuracy above 90% - But I was trying to play it with a wireless mouse and sometimes there is some slight lag or latency with moving the mouse and the computer responding. That made this game a bit more of a challenge.

I would actually buy this game and I don't say that very often, but then with trying to learn to play a guitar, I think I am probably getting more out of this game than some might...

Nor could I get hold button down function to play a melody

Clean download and install on my Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

Have only had enough time to try 3 levels, but I already suspect that this is going to be highly addictive.

I can see it as being an excellent and fun tool to help improve mouse accuracy skills, for children and adults alike.

yes Audiosurf is much better, but it's never been free to my knowledge. :) I've not had time to see whether you can add MP3's to this game yet. It may be possible to add them indirectly by replacing the in game music, that would extend the life of the game.

The site I upload my mages to appears to be down at the moment. Click on the link I've provided in the Video and Images section to get an idea what the game looks like. I've posted about 20 images plus a you tube Video. I'm not going to be available for moderation for two or three hours as we are going to a Rememberance parade with my son who is in the scouts. I'll moderate your comments as soon as I return. My son asked why he should bother going to the parade, so i told him the reasons why we hold these parades; (to honor the dead of the two world wars who sacrificed their lives to give us freedom from oppression and tyranny). I think he got the message.

Developers rely on good feedback to improve their games. If you download this game please take some time once you’ve played it a while to leave some constructive feedback either positive or negative. The more constructive feedback we get, the more likely developers are going to give more games away. The giveaway site already has a very good standing with the search engines. Developers want their products out there on the WWW, this site has the potential to do that. The game giveaway project gives away on average between 9 to 17 thousand downloads for each game depending upon what genre and how obscure the game is. That’s a lot of homes these games are being downloaded into and a lot of 'potential' cash that’s being lost by the developers. If we get better games because of better feedback, the community are likely to continue to benefit from the generosity of the developers. Satisfied community members are then more likely to visit the home sites of those developers and purchase games that they may not have bothered with before they discovered the developer via the game giveaway site, thus giving the developers more incentives to give away even more decent games.

Please leave some feedback once you’ve checked the game out. It can be positive or negative, but please explain what your reasons were for the feedback you post. You could also leave suggestions for improving the game, for example, this game could do with more block types for the levels editor, add more power-ups, describing the ones you think would be suitable, add some mini games (which seem all the rage in some arcade games now) or enable the user to be able to change the in game music easily.

Thank you in advance to all those who take the time to post a constructive comment.

Regards

Whiterabbit aka Stephen

Problems installing, activating and running today’s game:

If you have difficulty downloading or activating the game you can try again later or do one of the following - for example once downloaded when you click on the dual activation and set up file you may get the message “Failed to connect. Please try again later” Check to see if your internet explorer isn't offline (thanks to MrSnoozles/Mike and GMMan for that fix). If the previous suggestion doesn't work go check out previous comments from the last several weeks and look for comments from GMMan and Mike. They have also posted their possible fixes for this problem.

Mike suggests that you check to see if Internet Explorer is offline (even if you use firefox). If it is make sure that it's online thn try again. I’ve always tried re-booting my modem and/or router with some success, though Mike has said that doing that does nothing. Still, it’s worth a try if all else fails.

If you are getting the black screen problem right click on the games executable and select properties then click on the compatibility mode and select the disable visual themes. This should fix the problem, if not try disabling the display scaling on higher dpi settings and disabling the desktop composition.

Other fixes include changing your screen resolution, installing the latest direct X (remember that XP uses DX 9 or earlier only, Vista uses DX 10 or before and Win 7 DX11 or before). Also try updating your graphics drivers. The main two chip manufacturers are NVIDIA and ATI both of which offer driver downloads for free. Just go to the respective manufactures home page and you'll find a link to the driver download page. To find out which graphic card or graphics chip your computer uses type in Dxdiag in the search field (Vista or Win 7) or the run command (XP); this opens up the DirectX diagnostics panel. click on the display tab and look to the left panel. You should easily see what graphics card or chip you are using. (This is required information when selecting the correct download from the developers site).

Installation:
Tunes Jungle Adventure downloads to a 56.5 MB zip file that unpacks to a read me with the terms and conditions as well as a dual activation and set up module. For newcomers to this project all you need to do is download and install the game before the 24 hour giveaway period ends (Monday 8am GMT), once the game has installed it automatically registers via the wrapped registration module. The game installs to the following path (if you have a 64 bit computer. (remove the x86 if your system is 32 bit):

C:\Program Files (x86)\TunesWin

or

C:\Games\TunesWin

The game works on my Win 7 64 bit system and y XP 32 bit system. Not tested it on Vista yet. No shortcut is installed so you'll need to make a note of the installation path so that you can create your own shortcut.

The Game:

Tunes Jungle Adventure is a music based game on the lines of that freeware game Frets on Fire. It has 27 levels divided into a tutorial and eight different Island themes with names like sunny Island, Winds Island, Green Island and Parrot Island. The options menu is very basic with controls for adjusting the sound and a window/full screen toggle. You start the game by playing a tutorial that takes you through the rules of the game. The rules are also accessible ia the main menu with q short set of four screens. As you progress through the game you can follow your progress via the levels map. As you play the game you can be awarded Trophies for attaining specific goals.

Game Play:
• You have to point your mouse pointer at the notes that appear to catch them. To do this you can move your mouse from right to left.
• Click the coloured lines that appear with the left mouse button. The more accurate you are at ‘catching’ the rhythm, the more points you will score.
• Long notes appear as coloured bands/ribbons that run parallel the lines. Hold your muse cursor over these bands of colour to collect all of the stars for extra points.
• Click the notes with the stars using the left mouse button. Listen to the music, the better you catch the rhythm, the better your sore will be.
• Melodies are highlighted with interconnected coloured bands/ribbons. If you can play the melodies without missing a note you will earn additional points.

Conclusion:
I wasn’t sure about this game initially, but found despite its simplicity I enjoyed playing the 30 minute demo that I used to write up this review. Considering I only got to play 30 minutes, there may be information missing from my brief discussion of the game above. It’s a simple game to play which you’ll probably find when you play the tutorial. I won several of the awards just by completing the tutorial level and went on to win more after completing the second level. I don’t think I be playing this for protracted periods, partly because there appears only to be 27 levels, which means you can play through this game relatively quickly.

Despite enjoying the short burst of game play I don’t think I would play this game very often and because the game is fairly shallow give it a score of 6.1
what really annoyed me was the demo provided by Fly games was loaded up with that Babylon translator. Even though I unchecked all the check boxes I still ended up with the trial being installed onto my computer. That said, the giveaway version has been stripped of the annoyance.

Game play – 6.5
Graphics - 6
Audio - 7
Re-playability - 5
Originality - 6
