hi whyterabbit,

A squared is a trojan hunter primarily, and many people don't have dedicated software for that...most trust norton or macafee or whatever, but their focus is virii.

i downloaded and got the same results on both laptops and my desktop tower as well.

for what it's worth...

personally, i prefer to not keep software if there is any question of it's integrity...

and after watching a squared get legit threats missed by other scanners, i tend to trust it.

as for forums, thanks, but i barely have time to type this.

peace~!

Hi Pink,

Thanks for the information you've posted, though using my own purchased software the program comes up clean. no one else has reported this problem either, so could it be that something on your computer has infected the file??? (I'm only trying to rationalize it and am not saying your scan is at fault), it just seems unlikely if only yourself has reported the problem. There are thousands of community members downloading this software, so I'm very sure that there would have been a lot more reports of this trymedia worm if it was real.

I would suggest that you post the information in the forums as well, (in the appropriate thread), as although I think it unlikely, you can never be sure - better warned than left unsaid.

It's more likely to be seen in the forums than here, because once the giveaway has finished these comments are effectively buried.

I've had The Rise of Atlantis since it was first given away and have never had any problems with it. Maybe it's the latest version only as I didn't bother to download it because I already had the game.

further, the suspect files can NOT be quarantined or deleted.
i will try to uninstall the program, if it doesn't work i will report back.

it claims to be already uninstalled, and generated an error message asking if i wanted it removed from the list of programs.

this game is infested with spyware, according to a squared free.
sometimes this program will give false positives, but i generally trust it after using it since it's inception.

these are the results...i was very surprised.
it is always possible like i said this was a false positive, but i would feel like pond scum if i didn't say something.

Hi Ema,
Sorry for the delay in replying. I fell asleep at the keyboard early this morning.

You'll need to create a shortcut to the desktop once you've copied the folder to wherever you've copied it to. The default location is usually:

C:\program folders\The Rise of Atlantis

But you can place the folder anywhere you wish, though placing it directly into the root folder; (the root folder is where your windows installation is kept which is usually C:\) isn't recommended. (Don't ask me why though, lol)

The executable that you need to create a shortcut from is the icon that looks like a pentangle (5 sided) with 7 colored segments inside it. If you're placing the folder in exactly the same place as the original folder (i.e. the path I quoted above) you can actually use the original shortcut because it will point to the same place; (so long as you copied it from the first computer as well). Actually you can still use it even if you place the program folder elsewhere, but you'd have to go to into properties (by right clicking on the icon) and change the 'target' location and 'Start in' location. It's much simpler to just create a new shortcut by right clicking on the hexagonal icon by right clicking on the icon and selecting ‘Send To; then clicking on ‘Desktop (create shortcut)’. This will send a shortcut to the desktop. If you like shortcuts in the start menu you can also create one for there as well. I've written a short tutorial which can be found in the forums:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/2594

I hope this has helped.

Regards

Stephen

Thanks for this game. I had it before, on my old pc before it crashed, but now it's on my laptop. I love games that are playable with the touchpad so I can play them anywhere on the laptop without need of a mouse. And this game is also nice to look at.

Love the game. Downloaded on Vista Home on a bare bones Compaq laptop.

Thank you Whiterabbit for great reviews.

Spent the afternoon trying to get out of Carthage.

P.S.
I think the comment area should be for people to comment on the game itself. What they liked, or didn't and any problems they encountered while playing or installing. I do not think that it should be for badgering GGAOTD about how many times a game is offered or that the genre of the games is not to someones liking. IT IS FREE..be thankful or take a pass that day, GGAOTD does not owe us anything..it is a gift...
another beef with the comment area-- if you do not put in a correct email format, it bounces you to a screen informing you so and you have just lost whatever it is that you typed...so this is an abbreviated version of what i first wrote.

I'm running Windows XP and was able to download, install and successfully activate. Yet still when I click the desktop icon it begins with the 1st screen (the one with the dragon) and never advances beyond it. After a few seconds the screen turns to black then returns me to my desktop. Any ideas??

Hi Emma,

Just copy the whole folder that was installed to either a flash drive, r burn it to a CD. You can then copy it over to another computer.

Hi Bonnie,

Check your firewall settings. Also clean out your internet cache/temp folders. You can do this if running Internet Explorer b right clicking on the IE icon and selecting internet properties. From the window that opens you can delete the tep folders etc. This may help.

Hi Smiley, try cleaning out your cache as described above. Also check your firewall settings.

Thanks so much GGotD! This made my day. I'm very glad to have this game back, as I got a new computer last month and have only a few games set up on it. This is a great game of its type - I'm looking forward to playing it again.

@LonnH - Thanks for the tip! I've completed this game several times and never knew that you could specify which tiles you wanted the sun power up to take out. Even if it just takes out one specific tile in the later levels that's very good to know.

Hi Bob,

Games shouldn't flicker when you boot them up. Do you have any problems playing other graphically intensive programs? If so, it could be an early indication that your graphics card is on the blink. I’ll describe what you can do to test whether or not your card is faulty below. However, before you start messing with your computer, try updating your graphics drivers and DX9.0. If these don’t cure the problem and assuming your computer does have a separate graphics card as opposed to just an onboard graphics chip, you can test this by isolating the computer from the mains supply and opening up the side of the computer. Remove the graphics card by unscrewing the cross head screw that keeps it locked in place. Don't force the graphics card out. There's usually a clip near to the socket that locks the card into the socket (unless it's an older AGP socket). Once removed put the side panel back and reconnect to the mains. --- Oh yeah, unplug the monitor socket from the graphics card socket before you do anything as well. Once removed plug the monitor socket into the motherboards monitor socket.

Try some of the less graphically intensive games to see if the flickering is still occurring.

Some motherboards don't actually have a graphics chip installed. You can tell if the computer has a motherboard supported graphics chip by looking to the rear of your computer and seeing if there's a spare socket near to where all the USB sockets are. Please note that most graphics cards also have two sockets now as well.

One final thing, if your computer is relying on just the motherboards onboard graphics chip, it may not have enough memory to run the program effectively. There are animations which makes the game a little more graphic intensive than other games.

I hope the above has helped. Please post any other problems or queries over in the games discussion forums in the appropriate thread. Thanks.

Regards Whiterabbit

p.s.

I've just realized, Bob posted this in yesterdays comments. I'll leave it here just in case Bob is still around.

Further note to sun bonus - now that I am in higher levels I notice that clicking on a tile doesn't eliminate all of that type. It is random but it will take out the specific tile you clicked on, at least so far it will :) We'll see if it continues to do so. Only the lightning bolt takes out all of one type.

I was just thinking about finding another game similar to "Around the World in 80 Days." I have been addicted to that since last summer and after finishing 18 journeys, I needed a change of scenery!

This is made by the same company and is very similar to "80 Days." The playing field is a little small and somewhat difficult to distinquish between the squares but it may be that I'm just not used to it. I like the fact that the powerups carry over to the next level. I've only played a few levels but can't wait to continue on.

Yeah, I've been coming to GAOTD since the day after it started, and this is the first time I've ever had it where something won't activate for this length of time. I get the "Failed to Connect. Please try again later." I've already cleared the cache, halted my antivirus software, etc., etc., and I still get that error.

No big deal. Just a bit frustrating trying to figure out if the problem is on my end or GAOTD's end.

To those having problems running today's game giveaway, especilly those running Win2000, try Gametops or Freegamepicks versions. They are the same game. Though at Freegamepick they have changed the name of the game to Pillars of Hercules. You'll find links to both sites either via a link I posted in comment #1 or another post above where I list several places where you can get free games.

If the Gametop or Freegamespick versions work, then it would seem that there's something wrong with today's giveaway, however if they also won't work, it's going to be your system set up that's probably at fault.

I can only suggest you try one of the many other free match three games available from these sites. similar games such as Around the World in 80 days Pharaoh Puzzle, Eldorado and Atlantis Quest are as good as today's giveaway IMO

I can't get this to run under Windows 2000. Using the same Setup file copied across my network it runs fine on Win XP & Vista HP.

Symptom - Click the shortcut, disk access, then nothing happens. Have installed in two different locations. My DirextX.log file references DirectX 9.

Any thoughts?

Running 2000, too-won't open, when I click on the icon, nothing happens-even when the installer was finished and the "launch program" was checked, nothing initiated-It's like it’s not even on my computer-Never had problem before with any downloads of games from GOATD. Curiously, I had an icon of this on my desktop already, and clicked on it before downloading today, and same thing, nothing happens. So I uninstalled and downloaded today. I must have gotten it last time it was offered and it didn't work and forgot about it.
I use winzip to unpack GOATD offerings.
I have Around the World...., it's working, Jane's Hotel, Ghost in the Sheet, Cairo, +++++ etc...never a problem--

This game is definitely a keeper, I already have it so if you can get it now then grab it. You even get a pretty 3D screensaver when you finish the game! It's not as frustrating or nerve-wracking in the later levels as many other games of its type and will run on a netbook, plus you get to blow stuff up, so what more do you need?

I enjoyed it and played straight through to Egyptian level 8. At which point I clicked on help. When I closed help the game crashed and took my system with it. Vista Enterprise x64, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 512 MB Video card running dual 20 inch monitors in high res

To Willy – France,

Glad you’re happy :)

Marcie,

Have you checked out the free games thread over in the forums? There’s over 500 free games many of which are as good if not better than may of the commercial games we get via this project. There’s also sites like Gametop and Freegamespick, who give away commercial quality games for free, though you do have to keep an eye out when installing as sometimes they try to hijack your browser and install toolbars, then there’s Gamehouse who give ad’ supported games away every day, and finally Alawar give a decent game away approximately once a month and Big Fish also give games away intermittently.

Free games Synopsis (over 500 games):

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/4534

Gametop: (browser opens when you close game down, but it’s innocuous)

http://www.gametop.com

Freegamespick: (browser opens when you close game down, but it’s innocuous)

http://www.freegamespick.com

Gamehouse: (Today’s game is called Hot Dish 2: Country Cook-Off)

http://www.gamehouse.com/

Alawar (You need to install Alawar’s Gamebox to get the free games):

http://www.Alawar.com

Big Fish Games: (Free games only very occasionally)

http://bigfishgames.com/

Also Marcie, I’ve already posted a link to a thread over in the games forum called Match Three Heaven, where you’ll find around 30 match three games of the Rise of Atlantis, Bubble Shooter and Luxor type. (ee comment #1 for the link)

Hi Tx_Buckeye_Nut,

I get the download seed and progress bar when downloading anything from the giveaway project. Maybe you have such a fast speed, it’s downloaded immediately. :)

Llilly,

I think the problem is at your end. Check out the problems section in my first comment (#1). Try cleaning out your internet cache and temporarily turning off your firewall. All of the giveaways from this site are rigorously tested for malware, so it’s very unlikely that turning off your firewall will cause a problem. Though if you’re still worried about doing such a thing, create a restore point before you do it, so in the very unlikely event that something untoward does happen, you’ve only lost a little time.

Hi Lady Thunder,

The game should be compatible with Win 2000. Have you checked out the problems section I posted in my first comment (#1)

Hi Who Said That,

I would usually advise people to be wary of turning off their firwalls if they were going to an unfamiliar site, but the giveaway project test all thei software rigorously. I’d also usually suggest creating a restore point, but forgot to this time. As for being bad dvise, it really depends upon how much you want the game being offered.

As for games being only for kids (as your post implies), you’ll find the majority of community members are adult. Personally I play games mainly for distraction therapy to take my mind off the constant pain I’m in. While playing games, it’s usually much more effective than the morphine I have to take. As for your query about my age, let’s say I’m not a child. :)

Have had this game since the first time it was available, and still play it often! So if you are wondering if you should give this a shot. DO SO! I also use the screensaver that comes with it. (is it still there?) Beat the game once, and it's unlocked on the main menu.

This is a great game - I still play it from time to time since the last giveaway. While it would be nice to see something new, I'm sure there are plenty of others out there who don't have this or lost it.
Enjoy!

Just like the previous times this game was given away: It does NOT work with WindowsME (in contrary to the system requirements)! Thumbs down, sorry.

I am delighted to see this fine game offered again.
The last time I was out of town and missed out.
My husband is thrilled that this game will function on his computer (windows 98se). He has been happily playing and replaying Treasures of Montezuma(which he still loves) and deserves a new game!
My computer has xp with service pack 3.
Downloaded and installed without a hitch; and two happy campers resultant!
MANY thanks again, GGOTD and Playrix!!!

@ #29 Thanks, srmf!

I was getting the black screen problem whenever I tried to run any game. I spent hours trying to find a solution and was about to tear my hair out.

@ #44. You don't need to turn off the security programs. Changing the Comodo Defense setting from Safe Mode back to Clean PC Mode (default setting) did the trick for me.
