Hi Samantha,
If you have two computers you can set up a LAN (Local Area Network) and play Trackmania together. To my knowledge it's the best freeware racing game you can get. I'm not sure about the rest as I've not got them installed anymore. I'll check them out later if I have time and report back to these comment section, so do check back later in the day. (Nopromises though).

Check the wheeled games tread as there's some info about some of the games. You can find a link in one of my posts above.

Regards

Whiterabbit

Does anyone know if any of the alternatives racing games allow two real players to compete against each other? My kids enjoy that kind of game the most.

It sucks - I hate racers that are no-persepctive. This game you've got one view - straight DOWN, like you're over the cars in a chopper. You can only see a small part of the track. Really not much fun - not worth $9.99 for sure, glad I didn't have to buy it, would be asking for me euros back.

127 MB and cursor key controls? I doubt that there are very many auto race game players that favor using cursor key controls over any other way to steer a car and yet that seems to be the only way that new racing games come out of box.

People, get a clue. Just because a game doesn't have a proper installer doesn't mean it can't be removed. Remember: Most Game Giveaways don't have full installers. To delete them, just right-click on them and then click delete, or just simply press the Del key on your keyboard.

Note to GAOTD: Maybe it's a good idea to start adding proper installers to Game Giveaways. It'd save a lot of trouble for people who then have to create shortcuts and etc.

First off there is no install routine with this game. You just unzip it to a folder of your choice. That is good because if you decide you don't like it you can just delete the folder you installed it to. No need to run an uninstaller. No muss no fuss. I think most people will agree that this is just a GGAOTD throw away download. In other words this is a game they offer because they have nothing else at the moment. Filler material. The game side has been suffering for quite awhile. I can only recall 2 or 3 games worthy of a download in the last several months. I would suggest you follow the links from Whiterabbit to get better games that are free all of the time. Or at least a Gametop offering which causes your browser to open when you quit the game. It's a pain in the neck but I feel it is worth it for a game you can play any time.

As for the comments of Phil. Some of his comments may come across as harsh, but they are not without merit. Whiterabbit does this site a great service and we all thank him. But not all of the games he recommends are worthy of a download. It's up to you to decide if you want them. For me I will avoid any that uses the Dosbox. Don't get me wrong, I started with Dos on my computer but I see no need to revisit those days. I think programs now should be coded to at least run on XP. Forget Dos......... That is long ago done. I know none of the above games are Dos based... I'm just saying about previous games.

As always I want to thank the GGAOTD team for your efforts in giving us a free game each weekend. I would like to thank the publisher however neither of the links about leads to a web site. So how can I thank a publisher that seems to not exist? Who is the Publisher? Hand Made Game? I couldn't find anything about them. That is why I call this a throw away download. That is just my thoughts.

Hi Joketta, what exactly do you mean? You can't register the game without unzipping it first. Do you mean you've installed the game but can't find the shortcut? If so, check C:\games\ first; or if you installed last weeks games check inside one of their folders as sometimes these installations tend to follow the previous weeks path. Failing that use the search function and search for StreetRacer (no space between Steet and racer).

Thanks Bonnie & Karla. :)

Thanks Magiccrpet, ......for those that are interested you can find more details about Re-Volt (which is the game he's linked to) over in the forums; you'll find a download link, some image links and a short review over in the Wheeled games thread. I forgot to post the link in my first post above, so here it is:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/2574

There's loads of car related games. If you don't mind playing online I highly recommend (there you go I'm hightly recommending) the free version of Trackmania and Darkwind: War on Wheels. there's an active gamers community around both games so you'll find loads of support if you need it. War on Wheels is actually a great community game, with a futuristic post apocalyptic feel to it. It's been online for about three years following some years in development, and is constantly being updated and added to.

Thank you GAOTD for all the free games! And Whiterabbit, you are AWESOME! I recently found this site and appreciate all comments. I can see it isn't all "gamers" that come here, but people with various degrees of skill level and gaming desires. I've learned a lot in the last 2 months from the comments and the forums and am happy to know others have encountered my problems also. I am not adept at using the arrow keys at all. This game will give me the practice I need to help in other games.

It probably works better with a joy stick, using the arrow keys makes it difficult. I'm sure the kids will love it. I have trouble seeing the turns ahead, but then there is a map that requires you to multitask, so you see the map and the car on the road. Real racing is purely vision and feel, so seeing the road ahead in three d would be better, like a simulator. I suppose the main issue is how to use a keyboard easily to maneuver. Maybe if you could use your mouse pad to move or turn and 2 arrow keys to accelerate and decelerate.

Hi again Phil, you don’t seem to get what I’m doing here. This forum isn’t for die hard gamers. They will be trawling the forums of their favorite dedicated sites of whatever games they are into at the moment.

The majority of community members here are casual gamers who are looking to find a reasonable game for free. Most probably don’t have state of the art gaming rigs and have used their computers for house keeping and low power games as well as internet surfing and shopping. If you’re expecting state of the art graphics for free you must be living in a dream world.

Yeah, Hot Rod American Street Drag (not racing by the way), is a great game if you like the customisable cars, though I wouldn't say it's state of the art with requirements of only a 400MHz pentium 2 to run it and it will run on Win 98 as well. The graphics look very dated by today's standard, more so than a lot of the games I linked to above; I prefer the graphics to look a little more realistic- It would be brilliant if the game was brought up to date with respect to graphics, which we gamers expect of a decent racing game these days, though granted, the game play is excellent. I like some aspects of the game, but I prefer my rally games and Flatout Ultimate. Still if that’s your thing, fine, I won’t denigrate your choices. It puzzles me though why you grace us with your presence if you think the games offered here are rubbish, which from the 70 plus comments you've made since 2007 it seems you do.

I’m also curious to find any reviews I’ve written that build any game up into something spectacular? My reviews are 'usually' unbiased and to the point, with factual information such as game play videos and in game screen captures, plus links to other reviews of the games when I can find them. The links to free games are alternatives for those who fancy trying out other games. If the game I'm reviewing (though I don't actually consider the information I post here a true review) lacks game play or the graphics are rubbish I’ll tell it as it is. If the game works then I’ll say so. You may not agree with what I say, that’s your prerogative, but please do get off your high horse and float to earth a little. This is basically a free games site, so what are you expecting?????

I'm well aware that you are the same Phil whose many times in the past has felt the need to complain about my reviews and in virtually all of the 70 plus commentsy you've posted has had very little to say apart from how juvenile most of the games have been.

@15 Phil.

Phil,

Please don't slag off Whiterabbit like you seem to do with your comment (at least, that's how it seems to me...). He really gives every game a decent span of attention.
His game suggestions are all thorough.
Don't confuse your game likes and dislikes with the good intent of others to come up with alternatives.

Besides; "more modern game play" in my opinion means the hi-tec 3D no-holes-barred shooterfests, but also the "1 click games" aka "casual games"; both are "modern games" for a "modern market"; the market for each type of game is just very different....

So again, please give a little more consideration before entering a commenting which may seem a bit harsh.

Regards,
mterme

White Rabbit, I did try all but the onine games and found all were void of anything spectacular. Low budget, no effort and cheap without hardly any options such as "Different views", "Decent graphics" and last but not least "Ten years old in appearence". I like others appreciate your efforts but dude get into the 21st century and understand that the games you're suggesting are designed to run on systems at least as far back as 1999. Gamers who enjoy race games more often than not have better graphics cards so why install a game that doesn't reflect their capabilities? Try "Hot Rod American Street Racing" and you'll see the difference. Some people are happy with 2D games and kiddie games but real gamers aren't. Once again I do appreciate your efforts but too many times I try one and end up un-installing it after you build it up as something spectacular.

That's a good point JanW, I'd forgotten about XPadder; thanks for reminding us. It may improve the game play somewhat using a game pad.

Thanks Keith, it's community members such as you that makes it worth writing these reviews. :)

I didn't twig on to the fact that the Gametop version of Street Racer is the very same game as today’s giveaway despite having tested it for Malware not that long ago. Please do remember that games downloaded from Gametop are actually commercial games that are being sold elsewhere. The reason you're getting them free is because sponsors such as Forex pay a percentage to Gametop and the developers for each game that's downloaded.

I’ve just tested it on the computer I used for testing the giveaway version and got the same sort of errors. It crashed when I first booted up the game and I ended up having to turn the computer off at the off switch because it locked up my computer (this is a reasonably fast 3.2GHz dual core with 4Gb of Memory) and it also crashed when I took a screenshot, and took just as long to load when first booted up. The only advantage of using the Gametop version is that it comes with an uninstaller. It’s odd that the Gametop version is over 10Mb lighter yet when installed is virtually the same install size {bar a megabyte}

To Vilulf,
I don't see it as being weird. I try to write a review of a game whether it's appalling or brilliant - (not always successfully I grant you, as I'm just as biased as the next person), though I do try to give a non judgemental viewpoint of each game I review most of the time. You may not think this game is worth reviewing, but some community members will find the game okay or even excellent. Just because you and me find it a poor excuse for a race game shouldn't disqualify it from being treated like any other game I review. If I didn't have a shelf full of most racing or car orientated games from the last four or five years I'd probably find this game entertaining. Unfortunately I'm spoiled by the most recent releases such as Burnout Paradise City Ultimate Box, The Wheelman and Need For Speed: Underground, which are almost life like and have so much to offer (well - maybe not the Wheelman) that I'm bound to find today's game a disappointment. It all depends upon what you've played previously, and what's easily available to you as to what impression your going to get of such a game. I'm sure those recently joining the gaming fraternity will find this game much more entertaining than we do.

To Phil,

There isn’t much more with respect to free racing games available to the community, though you can’t have checked the list I posted thoroughly as games such as Trackmania are nearly as good as some of the recently released racing games, and the BMW game is pretty good as well. Some of the games may be old, but that doesn’t mean the game play is rubbish. As with the reviews I post, I try to find alternatives that equal or better the games that are being given away. I don’t get paid for dong this, and sometimes it takes me a long time to prepare such reviews. If you’re not satisfied with my suggestions I’d love to see some from you, or if you can’t be bothered to find any, why not trot over to Good Old Games and purchase a couple of their budget titles such as Flatout, a brilliant stock car racing/demolition derby game that retails at less than $6, or Colin Mcrae Rally 2005 and Toca Race Driver 3, both of which retail at less than $10 each.

http://www.gog.com/en/search/

The earlier Need for Speed games such as Carbon and Pro Street can be found in bargain bins for around $15 and I bought Race 07 with GTR2 for less than $15 last year {well an American friend did for me}.

Have a gamepad and don't want to use keys for steering?

Use Xpadder (it's freeware). Here's more info on Xpadder usage: Xpadder Guide

If you have problems with the version offered here, and still would like to play this game, try the gametop version.

I for one am not interested in this offer, don't like the top-down-view. But, that's just personal. Thanks for the offer, though.

Game loaded ok and ran fine. No problems with steering (You have to tap not hold arrows to turn). Due to the games limitations I un-installed right away because it sucks. Tried some of the other games White Rabbit suggested and they all were of low quality and game play. If you're going to make suggestions for games at least make them for more modern game play.

What a fun little game! I like the graphics, they're very eye-catching. The game play is pretty straightforward, but I will say it took me a little time getting used to the steering, I kept oversteering. Still, I imagine I'll have hours of fun playing this. It isn't for everyone, because some will just be annoyed with the music and sounds, and Im sure some of you will be upset about the size of the download, but as a whole, personally, I like it.

Really not a bad little racer, if you want something simple and not too demanding. The direction arrows throw you off a bit as they point sharp-left or sharp-right when it's really a merge, but the map is there also. Needless to say, I lost my first race on Easy (after running into every obstacle and car in sight, but it was pretty close, which gives a rookie like me hope. Thank gosh we don't have to drive with arrow keys in real life. I would never have gotten a license.
