#74 the texture loading error is due to the errant texture dimensions not being a power of 2, it is by default 64 x 34 pixels and needs to be resized to either 64 x 64 or my preference 64 x 32 pixels in any capable image manipulation tool. Do that in each club and problem solved. No idea if it is the programs 3D engine or a limitation imposed by certain chipset drivers. Either way the developers now knows to only use power of 2 texture dimensions for compatability and performance (3D engines and drivers will optimise their code paths for power of two textures anyway).

I downloaded this (twice) but have to search to find it on the computer.
And then it won't install or setup or whatever it needs to do.
I hate having it end up one of those dead files that sits somewhere in never never land, can't use it can't get rid of it.
Any suggestions?

How to uninstall this one? It didn't put any start menu items in -- no uninstall shortcut and nothing in add/remove either.

Is there a specific uninstall route for this program? Or just delete the directory? Did it dump anything in the registry?
Thanks.

Very lousy game - besides the wood error that had to be manually fixed, controls and documentation sucked and blew. Never did figure out what that second upper meter was (thinner line above the one that showed direction of ball). Never did figure out how to use anything but left and right arrow and space bar. directions crypticly spoke of different ways of using controls (arcade, arcade 2, sims, etc) but didn't say how to switch between these settings. Terrible game.

Re: 53 & 72

Certainly is a solution. Thanks! Your suggestions also gave birth to another alternative which seems to work as well. If you (use a graphics editor to) resize the original wood42.jpg from 64x34 to 64x64 (rather than using the 'dummy' alternative image)....then again this loading problem disappears (though I haven't yet tried playing the game).

Just to clarify something, the latest Elf Bowling is not freeware. Elf Bowling 7 1/7: The Final Insult, is available from Bigfish games. They are the people that gave us the gift of Peggle a couple of years ago!

You can get a free hours worth of demo from Bigfish and I recommend you do so! It is AWESOME! A perfect example of my idea of a simple, yet challenging controll system!

whiterabbit,
there are actually 7 elf games, elf bowling 7 1/7 at bigfish is a time-limited version and elf bowling 6 (air biscuits) and the other five are through nstorm.com. Don't know if you can directly link, went through about.com to get to them; they're available through the links that you gave, just try clicking on the other links on the pages.

Hi dns comment #42, try Googling Elf Bowling, it's quite a well known freeware package, so you should find plenty of links to download at least one of the five versions available. :)

http://search.msn.co.uk/results.aspx?q=Elf+Bowling&FORM=MSNH&mkt=en-gb

I would check any downloaded files with your antivirus program. If you have a decent one you should just be able to right click on a file and select check for virus's from the drop down menu.

Thanks for the info HOSS comment #68, that's one of those little jobs I've been wanting to do for quite some time now, but didn't know how too.

So no one has a fix for the wood42.jpg problem yet? It seems to be a tile for the bowling floor, and I tried to replace the jpg with a similar picture found on google images. Still give me the error... So, someone come up with a repair for this or I guess I'll uninstall like nearly everyone else that downloaded this.

Mattia Italy (#53) called the resolution to "Error loading texture" issue right, though the auto-translation somewhat fails to make it clear...

Go to where the game installed and within there is a "Scene" folder with 4 subfolders with names starting "club". In each of those subfolders you need to copy existing file "plitka" and rename it to "wood42", overwriting the existing file by that name.

For me once I'd done the above and kicked off the game, the error I'd been experiencing in Vista Home Premium (#16) went away. Thanks Mattia!

I agree with Whiterabbit, Vista is Vista and it is not GGOTD's problem. Microsoft put out a sub-par product (IMHO) and until they get all the problems fixed, no one wants to deal with it, including game developers although, I suspect that most of the games offered here were developed before Vista.

As mentioned earlier, with having to create our own desktop icons we can get the same icon over and over. If anyone is interested, I posted a comment in the Forums on how to change the game icons to the icons included in game download. Just go to:

I could not get this program to run on my computer - it didn't even work in XP Compatibility Mode. No review today.

>several people

I have Vista and am able to run 90% of the games on this site. The 10% remaining I take as a given, as it's a new operating system and the games are old, for the most part. It hasn't even had a service pack released yet! After Microsoft releases a few of its "updates"(read: things that should have been added during beta testing), I'm sure that it will have better compatibility. If not, I'm perfectly willing to accept that.

"Horrible! The graphics look like something from the late 80s."

I like bowling games so I was happy to see one offered here.
Unfortunately, it looks like this game is still in beta phase...or even alpha.

The controls are bad, the graphics are average, the physics are poor.
The animation stops between the first shot and the second shot in a frame. How ridiculous is that ? You have a pin falling down and it stops at 45 degrees. Also the fallen pins remain on the alley for the second shot.

The game has potential but it needs more work.

P.S.
The game also crashed on me.

LMFAO

Have you only recently purchased a computer, Jason? It sounds like you have zero experience using a version of Windows other than Vista. NO game is designed to run primarily on Vista, except those lame Microsoft games (new brand new ones). The computer world does not cater primarily to Vista users yet because Vista hasn't become stable enough for people to trust the switch. Give it a few more years and you'll see much more compatibility, but for now XP is actually a much much more stable and functional operating system. You don't hear about us XP users not being able to run the games..."even in compatibility mode" LMAO.

I see we are still with Fly Games. I downloaded and unzipped the game. The graphics are pretty lame. The gameplay is not so good. The music is.... there is no music. I'll keep this one because I have a lot of disk space available. For those that are limited for space I would suggest they skip this one.

Sorry to comment off topic but I wanted to thank Whiterabbit comment # 51 for the update on Magic Farm. I installed the last update you posted and will install this one too. I don't know much about using the forum page so I appreciate when you post updates on this comment page. I don't think I am alone on this.

Thank you GGAOTD team for another game. Thank you Fly Games

When you're done with this freebie you might check out an excellent 3D freeware gem called Bowling Blast at http://www.gamesbyscott.com - it's a realistic bowling sim, there's also a fine chess program there too. All are truly freeware, and made by an enthusiast rather than "Programmer C" fulfilling a by-the-numbers contract for yet another casual game to sucker people with. ;-)

UGH, easily the most disappointing game I have bothered to download!!!

1) Completely undecipherable control system. Unlabeled meters. The horrid combination of Mouse and Arrows. (Note to world; this is easily the least comfortable control setup ever!)

The metering system appears to be reliant on quick twitch accuracy. Bowling is a slower paced game that should be based on chaining several different decisions (Speed, aim, Curve, release) one right after another during the throwing motion.

2) Dead pins that make me think I am banging on Duckpins.

3) Does the Ball select do anything, or is it just a skin change? I want to see stats and abilities right on the same page as the ball, not guess or have to go look into help files.

I know I can be hard on programs about issues that can be solved with some exp or instruction reading. But some things need to be made intuitively or handled with tutorials. There is only one chance for a developer to make a first impression. And if you are willing to think that people will plop down money for something that feel weird at first grasp, they are dead wrong. Could you imagine walking up to a PS3 in-store display and just being fed a "Here, you figure it out" demo?

I really wanted to like this, but like "Masterpiece Fishing" before this, I was completely put off by having to constantly exit and dig through game instructions on what should be a simple, but thought provoking game. I expect that on games like "Deep Quest", not bowling and Fishing.

P.S. The shameless, cheesy act of making you change the game icon from the company logo is about a low brow as it gets.

The game downloaded and installed fine and the game ran well on my XP machine. I did not have any of the 'errors' previously mentioned.

Other than that, this game is pretty lame. The pins do not 're-set', the graphics leave a little to be desired and, the background audio is annoying. The controls are difficult to master. On one frame, I did not get credit for a 'spare' when there were no pins standing after my second throw. Also, what is with the player pictures? Who are these people and why do I have to look at them? A couple of them are a little creepy looking. (gee, I hope they are not members of the design team.)

Overall I guess I would give this game a 4 out of 10. It is playable so I will keep it for now just to see if I can improve my opinion of it. - Thanks GGAOTD!

Jason, I very much doubt that the game giveaway project would exist if we had to rely upon games that would play via Vista. I bought Vista in September and was appalled at how buggy the thing was. Not only that, most of my software for example my DVD burning software was incompatible, which would have forced me to replace several tried and tested softwares. My new motherboard, which was bought because it was supposed to be Vista ready, wasn't ready and I had problems with the OS recognising half the hardware on my computer. Suffice it to say that I uninstlled Vista and reinstalled XP.

I'm sure when Vista becomes the main OS platform, (which it will be; once all (or most) of the bugs have been removed) there will be a lot more games available that play via the Vista platform, so until then you're going to have to be happy with what does work.

So far I can't make it play either. *B*U*T* as far as the UGLY people (and most of them are not exactly pleasant photos) ..... it is easy in this games set up to just go into that folder and remove those pictures and replace them with ones of your own. IF you do tho ... make certain that yours are the same size both in inches by inches and in weight. Otherwise the program might stall depending on how the code is written. OF COURSE right now the program is stalling on me and I haven't changed a thing yet!!!

There has been a further update of Magic Farm: which was given away last Friday. The developer Oleg has been hard at work fixing the bugs that were reported from that day, plus there has been lots of extra content added. Today there has been another release, this one is version 1.006. You can find it on page five of the Magic Farm Review thread:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/2603/page/5?replies=137#post-18447

===============
Important Note:
===============

Before you install the update, delete the file you already have installed, but do not use the uninstaller to delete the older version as this will remove the registry key and you will no longer have the full version.

So a pretty basic programming problem here, Seems to work on some machines but not all judging from the comments.
