Hurray! Finally a HOG that lets me keep the knife I find at the start of the game, rather than making me look for a new knife/scissors every time I need to cut something (a pet peeve of mine).
I like the not too gloomy artwork and the cartoony antics of the professor, they keep the game from becoming too sinister. The interactive HO scenes and the mini puzzles are interesting, and though the "save the world from the mad professor" theme is not new, it is refreshingly done.
I finished the game late last night, which definitely had *not* been my intention. My only annoyance is that I did not find all the secrets. I guess I'll have to play the game again ;)
For those of you looking for a walkthrough, I found a series of video's: http://www.gameanyone.com/game/PC/56207.html
I know I'm very late in posting this, I hope it will make it past moderation. Maybe Stephen can enlighten me on the procedure for such cases: should I post here, or in the comments for the next game?

Hello,
I thought I should go back here as I finally managed to see that the problem I have (the issue is reported above) is basically due to Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 installed on my system.
The weird thing is that I had no trouble using KIS 2013 before. Switching to version 2014 obviously made the difference regarding the wrapper 2.0 system used by GAOTD.
I am not the only one facing that problem as you would guess, and it seems that so far there is no fix that would have been released by Kaspersky.
The suggestion of simply pausing the KIS 2014 protection and then restarting the system to install the software, works. Once this has been achieved, protection can be resumed.
I don't like the procedure at all, but for now I'm afraid there is no better workaround.

I am enjoying this one quite a bit. The minigames are varied and not off-the-cuff simple. The hidden objects also have some complexity to them (having to find Part A to turn Part B into the Object C you need, for example).
Complaints:
I do have one quibble - when using something from Inventory, you have to have your cursor on EXACTLY the right spot, or it doesn't register. There are many times I've tried to use the Multi-Use Tool (for example), but unless I have it at The Right Spot (and sometimes it is very tiny), it won't work. That was driving me insane, especially if I went back through various rooms trying to find something else that would work... and it turned out that it WAS the right Tool after all.
When using an item from Inventory, (and it IS the right one and on the right spot), the item appears to go back into the inventory as if it was the right one and THEN the animation begins for ...whatever the tool was supposed to do. But because there is that moment of "Gee, I guess it wasn't right..." sometimes I've already started to look for something else and "Oh, it was right after all, and I have to start that again. Don't know how that would be changed, unless it is to do without that in-between animation completely.
Still not sure how I like the live-action mixed with the more game-like cartoon backgrounds. And definitely not crazy about the silliness of the Professor's animation. Everything else in the game is fairly serious, but the Professor is cartoon-silly.
And if I have to look for one more "handle" or "key", I'm gonna go insane. A little more variety would be nice.
Love the story-line, love the puzzles, love that there are so many difficulty settings, love the "collections" (plants to find, money, etc). Not finished with the game completely yet (I'm in the subway underneath the garage), but am really enjoying it.

I am having an issue in the second room, specifically, I can't pick up the record, The cursor changes to a magnifying glass when resting on the record but clicking does nothing. Anybody?

Brilliant: funny mystery story, inspiring graphic, suitable music, fresh video animation combination.
Sometimes game cursor was not working properly - when combining 2 objects together or using multitool on quest areas. (In the garage for instance).
But otherwise - really good one! thank you for doing this work

The link to download a walkthrough led to a prompt to download an exe file. When you open it, it asked for email address to try to get you to subscribe to a newsletter! When you give it email, it just opens up a window again in your browser asking you to download the same file again! Finally the page said "This game will coming soon, please come back later." Disappointing to say the least!
I wish there really was a walkthrough for this game. It's so unclear so often where you are to go or what you are to do that it gets frustrating instead of fun.

Hi Stephen, sorry for the late comment but this game is great so far, I really like it, 8.5 of 10 for me, only because some of the clues/items that must be retrieved or used form a "reasoning arc" that at times makes no sense to me - that is, I would never figure out that I need to go back to a certain someplace I thought I had finished with just to find yet another piece of a puzzle when the two (or three) places have no other connections I can see, without a hint of some kind. But that's just me. All in all, this is one of the best mystery/puzzle/HO games I've seen yet on GOTD - URSE games are really quite good overall and I'm playing all of the last five URSE giveaways in rotation now!
I know it says we should leave technical talk in the forums, but some people never look for answers in the forum, and I have yet another suggestion for people who are getting errors trying to open up and extract downloaded files or run the installer; from Vista on up, you can often right-click on a downloaded file and select "Properties", you will see "Security: This file came from another computer and might be blocked..." etc. If you then click on the "Unblock" button that may allow your extractor or installer to run properly.
It would also be nice to add the several suggestions that others made today about corrupted files being caused by A/V scans preventing 100% downloads, and various Windoze security obstacles, into your set of possible solutions in the forum as a "sticky". I have experienced some of those problems myself, though have only had a problem with GOTD offerings once in the last several years. I gave up AVG last year and switched to another A/V program for nearly the same problem someone mentioned above- it was TOO intrusive at times (and cpu cycle usage too high), and also found that doing a manual scan after a file had completed downloading was at times necessary or I would get a corrupted file. My current A/V allows better control for me, but again, that's just me. :-)
Also, that may be one reason library and some public computers give that error, their protection software settings may be kicking scans in before the file is complete, cutting off the last few bits and corrupting the download, or they may be set to also use a sandbox and the same thing happens before the file is reassembled in another folder, such as onto a memory stick. If you ever watch the folder a download is being saved to you will see a "part" file being built, the final file you were after only gets assembled from that partial file when the computer has the OEF (end of file) flag from the last packet in the chain AND has all of the indicated packets the server indicated were being sent or resent; anything that cuts even the last few bytes off or loses a packet at the end corrupts the entire file, as someone pointed out. A final file can't be built until all necessary packets are ready to assemble in the correct order, and that EOF flag is always in the last few bits of the last packet. It doesn't take much to ruin a lengthy download, a lesson I learned way back in the days of C64s, BBS's, and 300 baud modems!
Hope my suggestions help.
John
(Stephen, I'd post things in the forum myself but... I thought I had registered a couple years ago but can't sign in, GOTD wouldn't let me register to post in the forums the last few times I tried, or maybe it's because I use FF v.22 and it's got a glitch... so far I can only lurk no matter what I try. Any suggestions to fix that?)

I finished the last half our of the game this morning. I am one of the few that didn't like the "human" element of the game. The molotov in the bank was way off as were most of the professor's movements. The game was way out in the realm of not even somewhat believable.
I did have a couple of actual problems with the game, however. In the Antique Store on the right wall there's a puzzle. I completed the double puzzles and it stopped. There were no moves. I'd won but it wouldn't let me complete it. I'd exit the area, go back in and it wouldn't let me do it again, still frozen. My only option was to walk impatiently away from my computer and wait for the Skip option to appear.
Also there's a video at the bank with the professor and the pillar. It froze the game completely. I was able to 3 key the game, kill it, restart it and it picked back up in the video where I'd frozen up. In case anyone else has that problem, that's the fix.
All in all, if I had paid for the game I'd be very upset with myself. Being that it was free it was a nice waste of a Saturday. :p

Downloaded and installed in 35 minutes on my Win7/64 bit system (out here in the country our DSL isn't super fast, but it's still faster than dial-up). The graphics are excellent, though I was a bit taken aback at first by the 'live' images (they're different, but not in a bad way). With getting the kids ready for back to school I haven't had a lot of time to play but I'm enjoying what I've seen so far. The HOG scenes are well done, and there are some objects in each one that need some puzzling out and extra steps to find them. The few puzzles I've done so far are doable, and so far a bit different from what are in my other games. Whether or not I'd pay $9.99 for it would depend on how long the game actually takes to complete, but if it's more than one evening, I would buy it. Thanks URSE and GGOTD for a great game.

With life expectancies increasing, 74 is no longer old. Scientists project that we will live up to 130 by the middle of this cetury (due to improved health awareness, improved diet and improved living conditions, of course this was only a study of Western communities, so such precictions should be taken with a pinch of salt)

@32 Don Hill, glad you solved “Failed to connect…” I always get that after an “impolite” installer widget decides to open Internet Explorer for me after an installing or upgrading software. Perhaps since I never use Internet Explorer, Windozzze changes its internet settings to “work offline.” Because the GOTD activator widget relies on Windozzze, it will not connect until I manually untick that setting, which one could actually do by starting Internet Explorer and unticking “work offline” under the file menu. This has always been the problem since '06, never any cache problems which was a myth where restarting one's PC would sometimes reset the “work offline” status. Way back 6 or 7 years ago, the rumour was born.
It's also not uncommon to download a file like this, put the kettle on, then come back after a tea break to discover the old “Failed to connect…” What happened is your ISP connection went down while you were having tea. It's happened to me. One cannot connect (“Failed to connect…”) without your ISP connection.
One could also lose their conenction due to a modem or router fault, but that'd be quite rare indeed. If you cannot get onto any sites, and you are sure your ISP connection is online, try as Stephen suggested rebooting your modem/router.
As Stephen also suggested, your security software could be stopping the installation. In this event, you will have always had “Failed to connect…” on everything unless your security software is NEW or just been heavily modified on your system.
@46 Diana in Yankee Land, As I suggested yesterday, one could also find a friend with a high speed connection willing to download the GGOTD for you. Or, consider wifi hotspot other than a library. There are quite a few in Amerika.
@Stephen, thank you for checking out my thoughts about download speed. I was able to do today's download in just 3 minutes, which is in line with what others are reporting. Great stuff getting it in 50 seconds Stephen :) Well done. Thanks for all of your comments and moderation which I and others would be lost here without. I take very seriously your detailed evaluations and score (n out of 10). Cheers.

Does not work - same issue as the one I got last week: "The archive is either in unknown format or damaged".
It is a shame, as both games looked quite promising, really.
I use the same system for so long now, and never went into such a problem before, even with large files.
I've nevertheless tried the suggestions, even disabling the AV, plus disabling the whole Kaspersky (foolish thing!) protection while trying to run the Setup.exe file and install the game, but to no avail.
I understand that most people here don't have any problems installing and running it, but still, there must be something that has changed in the way the software has been packed/wrapped?
I guess such an offer should install on computers that common people like me have, without having to tweak this and that.
It's nearly 6h30 in the morning, I have to give up and go to bed.
If by chance I manage to figure out why this issue later, I will post it.
Cheers

Very nice game. Download was about 1 minute so it looks like my provider's speedy claims are true :) Lovely graphics and so glad to see a casual mode. My only tiny gripe is that there are odd sparkly graphics that made me think they were hints while they weren't - notably the power line in the opening scene but there were others that I can't remember. I was hoping to go through the walk through but it wanted to send me emails so I skipped it. Sure I can get through it on my own eventually. There have been some really excellent games the last couple of weeks for those of us who like Match 3 and HOGs.

Another great URSE game, even better than last week's 'The Gift' (different developers). The HOG scenes are interactive -- i.e. you have to rummage around, put a robot together, realize you need to find a magnet to get nails out of a pitcher; and the puzzles are really good, from sliding-tile to sudoku-type, but skippable.
We're getting spoilt.
Thanks to GGOTD, Big Fish, and you, Whiterabbit.

Very nice and challenging game but a little to much running around from one location to another to solve puzzles and collect items. If you do not collect all of the money, prizes and bonuses before you complete the game you have to start a new game and redo the whole thing. There is no option to replay a particular location once you complete the game. So I have to mark the game down to a 2 out of 5 because of this. The graphics were very nice, the story and the voice animation was wonderful. If I would have known about the non-ability to replay a location to collect all of the money, items, rewards I would have never have completed the last scene. So be fore warned.

@bolerios: Previously I had the same problem with large files. The reason was the AV-SW! Because seconds before the download finishes the AV stop it and begin to examine the file. By a large file this take some seconds but the server on the other side don´t wait - by an interrupt it close the connection! So you have an unfinished file and get the error by extracting. You can do nothing - when only 1 KB is missing the file is unusable! You can only download it once more (by this offer naturally no chance - time is over). For the future: Set your AV-Tool so that the files will be examine AFTER completing the whole download. Some AV have here settings. If you can not do this (I hate to say it): Turn for such large downloads your AV off. But make this only by serious sites - I think on this Giveawaysite you don´t need to be afraid that you can get any virus...and don´t forget to turn on the AV after that!
Sorry for my english!
Nice weekend!

There seems to be two versions of this, one starts with some man, possibly a mad professor, looking at a drawing, and then closing a door on some kind of steam chamber.
The other version goes at once to the first scene, which is in a police car, and with no made professor.
unrelated: why do people begin with "To be honest..." vs just saying what they want to say. Is dis-honesty otherwise to be assumed.

Win 7 Home Premium/64 bits. No problem with the download--took maybe 1 minute, I wasn't watching. Installation very quick and clean. I like the fact that it is independent of the registry and runs by itself.
The game itself is terrific. I've played a lot of these games (and paid a lot for them too), and this is about the best. It's not enough just to find a hidden object, you frequently have to do something with it in order to find another object. So far, a real winner!

I was trying to figure out how to get that hydrant fixed and it kept freezing on me. I would move a piece or two and then it would freeze. After 2 freezes, I switched back to full screen mode (not windowed mode) and it not only let me complete the puzzle (and get my achievement) but hasn't frozen on me since.
I don't know if I've got the problem solved or not but it's an indication that windowed (even a large window) may not be a good idea.

Following up on my previous comment re: "Failed to connect..."
Issue is resolved - Internet Explorer (which I NEVER use) had been set to use a proxy server instead of a direct connection to the internet thru my router. I suspect this setting was changed when I tried to load a game for my visiting grandson, which was aborted by my antivirus program (AVG) because of a PUP issue.
It's interesting that the installer apparently utilizes IE's base engine to perform the extraction process (presumably the code is embedded in the .gcd file). Why it would do that is beyond my comprehension, and since my supply of gray cells is dwindling I'm more than happy to keep it that way. Suffice it to say that the program is now installed and functional.
Thanks for your helpful response, Stephen! You're doing a bang-up job in securing some really good programs of late, even if the file size is huge. Hi-res graphics in today's games makes that an unavoidable necessity.
As an aside, I was able to download the file in just under 15 minutes via a DSL connection, which in my estimation "ain't half bad!" Doing the math in my head (there's those gray cells at work), that works out to roughly 6MBPS - the max rate advertised by my DSL provider.
Enough shop talk - time to go play!

Since we are comparing speeds I will share my findings. I have cable internet and the speeds are usually good. This download took 7 minutes and 30 seconds.
I will however say that I believe the slower time was due to the speed the site was sending the data. This is not knew, as many sites deliver content with blazing speed while others take far longer.
So it is unlikely you will get great speeds with this download but it won't be your ISP's fault. At least not entirely.

#11: "I also noted that, like last week, the game is listed by one company and the “homepage” is listed as BigFish. It appears that BigFish is ALWAYS listed as the home page. There may be a bug somwhere!"
Perhaps because there are reviews & such along with a store they won't/don't have to host themselves?
* * *
#17: "having a problem installing it on win8 – it wants to go to the C:\Windows\System32 instead of another folder and when I try to change it (or actually load it there which is dumb I know), I get the error that the archive is in an unknown format or is corrupted. Help!"
May be 2 problems?... The WinRAR software itself will use the last target folder that you used with WinRAR as the WinRAR default -- if the last time the target folder was C:\MyApps\ , that's what'll be there in the box the next time it runs. The suggestion of C:\Games\ that GOTD adds will not over-ride that, though you should be able to freely change the target folder if/when you want.
As for the error message, often that can happen if your security software decides it doesn't like the RAR file [containing the game] that the GOTD setup.exe stores in your system's memory. What happens is the WinRAR software starts & runs fine, but the file it would unpack [with the game] no longer exists because the security software already quarantined or deleted it. Normally you wouldn't ask WinRAR to unpack a file that wasn't there, so there's not a hard coded error message in WinRAR specifically stating that the file's missing.
If that's the case, often your security software will tell you that it stopped some alleged threat, &/or it'll show up in the software's logs. When security software does interfere you can sometimes turn off its real time monitoring, & that may help. Other times it may be part of a security software service that you can't stop -- there are a few threads in the forum where Chris suggests running in Safe Mode with networking just long enough to get the GOTD installed.
[Please Note: it is unusual for software to use the system folder as a WinRAR target folder, e.g. if some or all of the files needed for an install are compacted into an RAR file, they're usually expanded or extracted in a temp folder & then copied. If you didn't expand a RAR file into the system folder yourself, I'd humbly suggest running a few anti-virus scans -- many of the companies selling security software [e.g. Kaspersky] have free downloads or on-line services just for that sort of thing.]

This looks like another excellent HOPA! I've only played for about half-an-hour so far, but it's great to have a game that makes me think and puzzle things out - if the fire hydrant puzzle is typical of the rest of the mini-games, then it's going to be great. I like the use of real people in the videos and the story has already got me hooked. Music is good and I like that I'm collecting achievements and finding money to purchase items in the garden - it's an extra thing to try to do. I can foresee a great deal of fun playing this one.

#13, when that happened to me I would reboot in safe mode with networking and go do something else while downloading because that takes even longer, but somehow it got around whatever was preventing it from corrupting the executable. It has to do with some setting on your computer not playing well with the GOTD wrapper. I never found out what it was and it's possible it's one of several things. This was a tip I got from another GOTD user. Eventually mine corrected itself. Can't explain what it was but safe mode with networking solved it.
I'm generally over HOGs after playing them for years. But this one is high quality. The cut scenes are what makes it interesting but also what makes it such a huge dl. Took me 17 minutes on Comcast. But I've dl'd bigger files much faster so it must have had to do with traffic on GGOTD. I've only played the first puzzle but I'd say this is worth the time and electricity to play through at least once.
Thanks Stephen. As usual we appreciate you taking the time to do this.
